Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 17?

The Gameweek 17 captaincy is set to ask Fantasy Premier League managers to choose between form and fixture.

It’s an age-old debate for us but no-less easy to solve going into the latest round of matches.

Therefore, the Captain Sensible article is back once again to help Fantasy managers make the right decision.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up either on monthly or season-long packages will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Once again, it’s Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) at the top of the captain poll for another round of FPL action.

After a 13-point haul at Aston Villa, the Leicester City forward is now preparing to host Norwich City in Gameweek 17.

The Canaries have conceded 34 goals this season, only Southampton shipping more so far, while Vardy himself is in absolutely incredible form.

His last blank was the Gameweek 8 defeat at Liverpool and he has scored in every single match since then. That’s a run of eight Premier League outings which have seen Vardy find the back of the net, the former title-winner scoring 11 goals in that run, adding three assists.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see Vardy command 51.8% of the captain poll for Gameweek 17, displaying a commanding majority over the other candidates.

Coming up in second and third place respectively are Liverpool’s dangerous duo of Sadio Mané (£12.3m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.2m).

It is the Senegalese international with the superior backing (22.1%) which is perhaps no surprise considering how many teams he is in worldwide (42.7%).

A rest against Bournemouth should see Mané come into Gameweek 17 fully refreshed for a tasty meeting with Watford.

The Hornets have lost each of their last three visits to Anfield by a 5-0 scoreline or worse, which bodes well for both Mané and Salah.

Each of them has been involved in seven goals at home this season, Mané scoring five and assisting two while Salah has found the net six times and assisted once.

The Egyptian looks like he could be an interesting differential option across the board, both for owners and captainers. Sat in just 21.6% of teams worldwide, only 8.8% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 17 armband.

There is a smattering of interest in Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) as Chelsea host a Bournemouth with defensive problems of late.

The Cherries could be without both Nathan Aké (£5.0m) and Steve Cook (£5.0m) on Saturday afternoon, arguably their two best central defenders.

Chelsea have now lost each of their last two Premier League matches and Frank Lampard will be under pressure to get a positive result. 3.3% of the voters believe that this will make Abraham a viable candidate for the captaincy this weekend, as he comes into Gameweek 17 with six attacking returns in his last seven matches.

A small number of managers are planning a brave defender captaincy for Liverpool’s meeting with Watford, 2.3% voting for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m).

The right-back has three attacking returns in as many Premier League matches and faces a Hornets outfit that often struggles to defend set-pieces.

Furthermore, Nigel Pearson’s new side have not scored in any of their last three trips to Anfield and have blanked in three of their last four matches this season.

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) is the only other option backed by more than 1.4% as Manchester United host Everton.

I'd play Jimenez over Kelly and roll the FT this week, then do all three next week.

Good moves, but they're a week early.

Feel like I've gone against the grain this week and taken advantage of Pulisic's price drop by doing MOUNT > PULISIC.

Mount doesn't seem to be nailed in Chelsea bigger games away from home, with Lampard's favoured midfield 3 being Kovacic, Jorginho and Kane. Chelsea play Spurs and Arsenal away soon.

Mount was gone from my team soon or later, and I really feel that Pulisic is an 8.5/9.0 asset at a 7.4 price. Underlying stats are still brilliant (one of the best for midfielders) and fixtures are strong over the 6 next GWs or so.

Yeah, this was part of my thinking with removing Mount this GW too. Pulisic seems to be Lamprd's golden boy atm.

I think Mount will start this weekend, but not against Tottenham. And he's edging closer to a price drop which would price me out of getting Rashford in soon. So I decided to make the switch now.

Mount could still score well this weekend but I figured Pulisic is a longer term option, and I wanted to take advantage of his price drop.

Much as Tammy and Rashers tempt me I think Jimmy is just as viable an option this week and selling could hurt, certainly for next week. Having 2 or maybe a miniwildcard 3 transfers next week is important with the blank.

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

I think the highest potential for gw17 is Salah. Really looks to be finding fitness and form again and has been dropped by so many managers. Closely followed by Mane / Vardy who I'd put neck and neck as bankers for one or two returns each. I'm going with Salah as captain in the hope he goes on a mad one for 90 minutes and scores a hat trick. Interesting gw ahead. glgl.

In a ML of 4. Top 3 all quite tight. The guy who was top had Salah all season the rest of us had Mane for most of it. He finally caved and swapped Salah for Mane last week while I had benched him. He’s dropped to third and I’m in second. Is it too perverse to use my FT this week on Mane>Salah?!

Personally I wouldn't mate. Let him do the chasing now. Either one of Salah or Mane could haul so it's possibly a sideways transfer especially with the blank. Though if I'm honest, if I owned both, I'd go Salah so I'm not saying it wouldn't pay this week

Cheers. It certainly wouldn’t be a ‘sensible’ move but it would feel good if it pays off!

                              Pulisic.

                              - Underlying stats are brilliant.
                              - He's been quoted as saying that he and Chelsea need "to start being more clinical."
                              - Was brought off early against Lille with the game seemingly tied up (Chelsea then proceeded not to score once Pulisic was off the pitch).
                              - Chelsea have over a week's rest until Spurs away, so no reason for Lampard not to play him.

Taken advantage of Pulisic's price drop (already) and Mount's impending price drop by doing MOUNT > PULISIC.

Feel that Mount is now a rotation risk and not favoured by Lampard in their big games away from home.

Yeah, not a bad shout. Wolves' fixtures are starting to turn though and, as you say, hard to fit him in with Rashford/Vardy/Jimenez/Abraham/Ings etc.

If fit, Pepe. Now that he's off the mark he will hopefully build some momentum. And he has the pace to punish a leaky City defense.

I'm not bold enough to put a number on it, but those three have the perfect stats and fixtures (injuries, defensive stats, formations, etc) for a free hit midfield in this gameweek

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards Pulisic & Connolly > Tammy & Dendoncker

I've 2 FT's & 0.9 ITB, so at serious risk of burning a FT, and also understand the risks of Pulisic out before BOU.... but he's been trolling hard for 4 games now & Tammy is the better longer term pick of the two anyways...

                            Salah(c), KDB, Maddison, Alli, Pulisic
                            Vardy
                            (Button, Mousset, Rico, Connolly)

After his early bath midweek, and zero returns in last 4 league games plus Chelsea's poor league form in that spell - is Lamps even guaranteed to start him or will he give CHO/Mount a go in that role to try freshen things up a bit?

                            #PulisicOut may start trending...

                              I wouldn't recommend #PulisicOut.

He played very well in the week, and was only brought off to give CHO gametime who was apparently shocking.

He's still producing great underlying stats, and seems to be favoured by Lampard (wasn't brought off away at City or Everton with Chelsea chasing the game).

CHO has been pretty poor recently and Lampard has made comments alluding to the fact he isn't ready to start games at the moment due to fitness issues.

Mount should start against Bournemouth but is then at risk of being dropped for Kovacic/Jorginho in the away trips to Arsenal and Spurs.

I would give Pulisic this GW against Bournemouth who are short on defenders and played well for 60 mins in midweek.

could be good, could be bad - whatever you feel like

not bad changes to be fair

consider Mooy or Shelvey over Cantwell

What's the best time to use each chip? This is what I'm thinking:

TC when Liverpool get their GW18 fixture rescheduled
FH for the first blank GW (31 I think)
WC for the first double GW (32)
BB for the second double GW (35)
