Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 17?

The Gameweek 17 captaincy is set to ask Fantasy Premier League managers to choose between form and fixture.

It’s an age-old debate for us but no-less easy to solve going into the latest round of matches.

Therefore, the Captain Sensible article is back once again to help Fantasy managers make the right decision.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up either on monthly or season-long packages will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Once again, it’s Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) at the top of the captain poll for another round of FPL action.

After a 13-point haul at Aston Villa, the Leicester City forward is now preparing to host Norwich City in Gameweek 17.

The Canaries have conceded 34 goals this season, only Southampton shipping more so far, while Vardy himself is in absolutely incredible form.

His last blank was the Gameweek 8 defeat at Liverpool and he has scored in every single match since then. That’s a run of eight Premier League outings which have seen Vardy find the back of the net, the former title-winner scoring 11 goals in that run, adding three assists.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see Vardy command 51.8% of the captain poll for Gameweek 17, displaying a commanding majority over the other candidates.

Coming up in second and third place respectively are Liverpool’s dangerous duo of Sadio Mané (£12.3m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.2m).

It is the Senegalese international with the superior backing (22.1%) which is perhaps no surprise considering how many teams he is in worldwide (42.7%).

A rest against Bournemouth should see Mané come into Gameweek 17 fully refreshed for a tasty meeting with Watford.

The Hornets have lost each of their last three visits to Anfield by a 5-0 scoreline or worse, which bodes well for both Mané and Salah.

Each of them has been involved in seven goals at home this season, Mané scoring five and assisting two while Salah has found the net six times and assisted once.

The Egyptian looks like he could be an interesting differential option across the board, both for owners and captainers. Sat in just 21.6% of teams worldwide, only 8.8% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 17 armband.

There is a smattering of interest in Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) as Chelsea host a Bournemouth with defensive problems of late.

The Cherries could be without both Nathan Aké (£5.0m) and Steve Cook (£5.0m) on Saturday afternoon, arguably their two best central defenders.

Chelsea have now lost each of their last two Premier League matches and Frank Lampard will be under pressure to get a positive result. 3.3% of the voters believe that this will make Abraham a viable candidate for the captaincy this weekend, as he comes into Gameweek 17 with six attacking returns in his last seven matches.

A small number of managers are planning a brave defender captaincy for Liverpool’s meeting with Watford, 2.3% voting for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m).

The right-back has three attacking returns in as many Premier League matches and faces a Hornets outfit that often struggles to defend set-pieces.

Furthermore, Nigel Pearson’s new side have not scored in any of their last three trips to Anfield and have blanked in three of their last four matches this season.

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) is the only other option backed by more than 1.4% as Manchester United host Everton.

On a wildcard. Which do you pick:

    Pope, Button
    Kelly, Soy, TAA, Baldock, Lundy
    Zaha, Maddison, Mane, Alli, Dendo
    Vardy, Rashford, Abraham

    Debating
TAA, Baldock, Rashford >> Aurier, Tomkins, Kane

    What do you think?

Wouldn't bother with zaha on wildcard would prefer grealish , Taa,baldock, rashford better imo although not sure about wildcarding week before blank Liverpool

Well since you're on WC, I rather drop TAA and one of Sheffield's defenders to upgrade Zaha>Son. Maybe the remaining Sheffield's to Aurier while at it. Basically go cheap at the back and splash fund in front.

From gw18/19 could a Bournemouth attacker become an option ? Fixtures look good but obviously their form is quite shocking

If I am currently ranked 790K and have both Vardy and Mane, which one makes more sense:

    A. Stick with the herd mentality and do what the majority of the top 10K managers do and give the captaincy to Vardy in fear of missing out.
    B. Try my luck with Mane as the less popular option (differential captain) and hope that he outscores Vardy and boosts me up the rankings a bit

Which makes more sense given my current ranking?

t's GW17. Vardy is on fire. Herd says you need to decide yourself. Good rank, you got there yourself. If you pick one and the other does better don't worry about ut. Live and learn. I think there's better advice here from posters rather than articles.

Cheers mate. Tried an interesting experiment a few gameweeks ago where I stopped visiting this website for a bit and got 5 green arrows in a row 😀 Sometimes I do tend to overthink stuff when I see what articles/people here say and allow myself to be influenced by that. Should just go with gut feeling and give it to Mane this weekend. Cheers!

Simpson from Bournemouth might get a run out now they are so badly depleted.
Maybe Reid if he ever gets back to the player he was.
Gibson would take injuries to Mee and Tarko I guess.
              So none.
Kiko at 4.2 is cheapest starter now

            Start Kelly or Lundstram?

I am starting both with Soy on the bench, if that helps. If you look Madds form then yes, but I almost never like doubling up, spreading the risk is my tactic with all major teams covered. But if you keep him that is also not bad decision.

The chat on Palace forums is that one of the undisclosed injuries is Townsend.

That doesn’t bode well for Palace attack - ie Zaha - especially as Schlupp is also out. Best guess is that it’ll be a stodgy team put out with few attacking outlets with little pace or width.

Townsend out could also weaken the right side defence - he typically puts in a good shift there.

Could be good for Kelly though. F€ck it, had Zaha just 2 GWs, his inconsistency has become consistent again. Might just sell him for Madisson or Richarlison but prob bench him and start Kelly.

            Yeah

If Palace set up defensively then there are few better teams at that so could work well for Kelly. The real concern is Riedewald on the left who 2 years later is still a complete unknown.

Also there may be someone else out. It was plural injuries.

Yeah. Hodgson saya there coukd be more injuries. Zaha surely has to pull out some big games if Chelsea are actually interested in paying 80m for him next month. He's not be consistent enough to deserve that price.

To me the problem for Zaha is he needs another focal point in attack to play off to excel. It’s a big ask to get him to do it all by himself. Good as he is he can be shut down if he’s the only real outlet

He’s not exactly unique in this of course but there’s a popular perception Palace are a one man outfit in attack. Certainly last season he only really flourished when Bats arrived and he also had a golden spell with Bolassie.
