Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain candidates for Gameweek 17?

The Gameweek 17 captaincy is set to ask Fantasy Premier League managers to choose between form and fixture.

It’s an age-old debate for us but no-less easy to solve going into the latest round of matches.

Therefore, the Captain Sensible article is back once again to help Fantasy managers make the right decision.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up either on monthly or season-long packages will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Once again, it’s Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) at the top of the captain poll for another round of FPL action.

After a 13-point haul at Aston Villa, the Leicester City forward is now preparing to host Norwich City in Gameweek 17.

The Canaries have conceded 34 goals this season, only Southampton shipping more so far, while Vardy himself is in absolutely incredible form.

His last blank was the Gameweek 8 defeat at Liverpool and he has scored in every single match since then. That’s a run of eight Premier League outings which have seen Vardy find the back of the net, the former title-winner scoring 11 goals in that run, adding three assists.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see Vardy command 51.8% of the captain poll for Gameweek 17, displaying a commanding majority over the other candidates.

Coming up in second and third place respectively are Liverpool’s dangerous duo of Sadio Mané (£12.3m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.2m).

It is the Senegalese international with the superior backing (22.1%) which is perhaps no surprise considering how many teams he is in worldwide (42.7%).

A rest against Bournemouth should see Mané come into Gameweek 17 fully refreshed for a tasty meeting with Watford.

The Hornets have lost each of their last three visits to Anfield by a 5-0 scoreline or worse, which bodes well for both Mané and Salah.

Each of them has been involved in seven goals at home this season, Mané scoring five and assisting two while Salah has found the net six times and assisted once.

The Egyptian looks like he could be an interesting differential option across the board, both for owners and captainers. Sat in just 21.6% of teams worldwide, only 8.8% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 17 armband.

There is a smattering of interest in Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) as Chelsea host a Bournemouth with defensive problems of late.

The Cherries could be without both Nathan Aké (£5.0m) and Steve Cook (£5.0m) on Saturday afternoon, arguably their two best central defenders.

Chelsea have now lost each of their last two Premier League matches and Frank Lampard will be under pressure to get a positive result. 3.3% of the voters believe that this will make Abraham a viable candidate for the captaincy this weekend, as he comes into Gameweek 17 with six attacking returns in his last seven matches.

A small number of managers are planning a brave defender captaincy for Liverpool’s meeting with Watford, 2.3% voting for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m).

The right-back has three attacking returns in as many Premier League matches and faces a Hornets outfit that often struggles to defend set-pieces.

Furthermore, Nigel Pearson’s new side have not scored in any of their last three trips to Anfield and have blanked in three of their last four matches this season.

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) is the only other option backed by more than 1.4% as Manchester United host Everton.

I can either punt on Jesus for this week (Arsenal defence is shite, I have no City and Arsenal have just played the Europa League so may be a bit leggy) or use both FTs for Laca and Pulisic to Alli and Tammy. If I go with Jesus this GW, I will go for Alli and Tammy next week.

    Any thoughts?

I would do Laca&Puli out. Tammy&Alli could both haul this week. Jesus also, but here are better chances imo.

I watched a bit Arsenal v West Ham. Hammers goal was lucky, big deflection. Not saying Arsenal defence is good, just better than I thought.

Yeah but West Ham is a bit different to City. I know they are not having a great season overall but they still have an awesome attacking squad and Jesus will be at the sharp end of it. I really am torn here......

Hammers had no motivation after 60 minutes. City won't.
That Xhaka failed back pass could cost them a goal.
Ozil didn't look interested to play. Not sure how many times he was dispossessed.
That Hammers was lucky indeed if you don't count how bad Xhaka and AMN(basically turned his back).

I would give Pulisic one last chance since Bournemouth having issues with defence.
They had a few good chances tbf against Everton. Sidibe nullified Pulisic very well back then(you could see he was annoyed by him).
Meanwhile, Arsenal leaking goals against Brighton(even West Ham).
            City are on different level.

I would punt on Jesus and bin Pulisic next gw. Only Chelsea's slot worth is Tammy.

Yeah that seems to be the consensus for Pulisic. So Jesus or Tammy this week then?

      Laca out for Tammy.
Arsenal fielded a very weakened side in Europe so they will not be leggy.
I can see Tammy and Pulisic score vs Bournemouth

            Guaita
            TAA - Soy - Lundstram - Kelly
            Mane - Son - Maddison
            Vardy - Jesus - Rashford

Subs: Button - Jorginho - Dendoncker - Guilbert

I have 2FT and 0.2 ITB so want to go Jorginho > 4.4 mid. Then have 2FT and extra cash next week to make moves, rather than burning a FT.

Likely that one of the 4.4 mids get booted next week in a two transfer move.

    2FT

AWB, KDB and Connolly => Kelly, Martial and Abraham (-4)?

Both KDB and Wan-Bissaka could come good this weekend, but the same could be said about the ones I might bring in, and an 'extra' player would be sweet come next GW where I need to bench my Pool assets and generally during x-mas period. hmmmm...

    Current team:

    Pope
    Aurier, AWB, TAA, Lundstram
    Mount, Mane, Son, KDB
    Vardy(C), Rashford

    Button, Cantwell, Rico, Connolly

This has been a burden in my life for a few years now and finally I have got to the bottom of it......

For a few months now everyone who I trusted to captain on my personal FPL account has been consistently blanking screwing up my GWs and plans. There has been so many hours given to them by me, on my Excel sheets and charts – all without any assists or goals.

After a long time of trying to figure out who the best pick could be, for various reasons, I had a suspicion. To try and prove this I came up with an idea. I captained every different premium player every week except one guy. (Those following my rants must have been wondering why I haven’t been ranting for a while.)

Over the past five months I have captained every possible player from my squad to see if they choose to blank only when I captained them. And you know what, they did! The story about Sterling TC against Southampton, the story about the never ending Pukki Party and then the latest story about Sir Lundstram having a haul every 4 weeks.

It’s been tough keeping myself calm and not making any comment at all, especially when the blanks have been consistent, however I had to. Now I know from certain where it’s come from.

I have saved my OR from falling finally and haven't had my Captain blanking for the last 8 GWs. Which clearly shows just one person who has saved them. It’s … Jamie Vardy.

Personally I dont believe that captaincy plays that much part in green arrows as long as you own that player. Its more about overall score in the end.

Its probably a controversial statement and I dont have any numbers to prove this.

I guess captaincy matters in top zone like top 50k or something because every point counts but below that we can manage to improve rank even without captaincy success.

Very true but bigger clubs were in no rush to sign him so his inconsistent performances might suggest Palace are his level for now. What he needs is a coach to improve him like Guardiola did with Sterling. No doubting his ability or potential, just if he has the ambition and work ethic to show consistently that he's a quality footballer.

Tielemans could go to maybe Maddison? Bit side ways but think long term it could work. Richarlison another option or Grealish next gw

Captain Salah based on previous games against Watford and him coming back into form or Vardy for the obvious? also trying to think if its worth taking another hit for tomori to Kelly/cheaper defender to stop price drop

I find it extremely interesting that he signed a new deal on the same day Gerrard signed an extension.

Usually I’m not a fan of long term premier league management contracts in these times since players lose interest.
However Klopp seems to have a talent to keep things fresh and exciting whilst keeping players interested always. Very exciting times for pool fans.

Got a FT to burn, can anyone figure out wtf I can do? Doing TAA/Robbo + Perez > Kelly + Alli next week
      My current ideas are:
      Soyuncu > James
      Cantwell > Sissoko

      Guaita (BHA)
Soy (NOR) TAA (WAT) Robbo (WAT) Lord (AVL)
KDB (ars) Salah (WAT) Martial (EVE)
Vardy (C, NOR) Rash (EVE) Ings (WHU)

      Button Perez Cantwell Rico

He’s going for Alli next week so can’t even put him out of his misery yet!
Chelsea right back who has claimed the spot from Azpi last 3 games. Very attacking and cool.

I wish, only 0.3m itb. Strangely boring but comfortable position to be in. Might have to get James to make it exciting, will only be on the bench next week anyway like Soyuncu would be so I guess it makes most sense

Ooooo that’s actually a really cool shout you know. I do fancy United vs Everton but after that I’m not sure the double up is wise. But madd vs norwich is a tasty thought. This is why you’re a pro mate x

I'm prob playing my WC next week, so have been looking at one week moves.

Thought about Soyuncu > Chilwell myself, or Alli > Maddison, maybe Mane to Salah. Not sure yet but that Leicester game is appealing, fixtures not great after tho.

Need some advice: (2 FT, 1.4 ITB)

      I'm tired of Tielemans

      Ryan - Button
      Chillwell - Lundstrum - O'Connel - Rico - Reid
      Mane - KdB - Son - Alli - Tielemans
      Vardy - Jiminez - Mousset

      A) Tielemans -> Maddison
      B) Tielemans + Mousset --> Mctomminay + Abraham
      C) Tielemans + Jiminez --> Grealish + Rashford
      D) Something else to upgrade defence

      2FT

      A)
AWB, KDB and Connolly => Kelly, Martial and Abraham (-4)?

      B)
AWB, TAA and Connolly => Kelly, Dunkl and Abraham (-4)?

      C)
      AWB => Kelly
