As FPL managers around the world debate what to do with City assets a key factor in their performances, or often lack thereof, that has been overlooked is Aymeric Laporte. For much of last season and the start of this one, the Frenchman stood head and shoulders above every defender in the league and was, arguably, the only defender even close to Virgil van Dijk. But this season he was struck by a serious knee injury just six gameweeks into the season. The impact of this has, in my opinion, been severely overlooked.

The first issue arises with City’s style of play and the personnel required to implement it. It has become obvious that even if both were fit Pep doesn’t trust a pairing of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi either defensively or to be his playmaker from defence. The result is that he has drafted in Fernandino as an auxiliary centre-half to fill that playmaker role.

This has had a two-fold effect due to pulling the Brazilian from his natural role at the base of the midfield (Rodri is a fine player but he isn’t in the same mould). Firstly let’s look at the defence.

With Laporte City were averaging six shots conceded per game, without him this goes up to 8.5. If we exclude set pieces we see City conceding just three shots per game with Laporte compared to six without him. If we look at the rate of chances we see City conceding a chance roughly every 16 minutes with Laporte compared to just over every 11 minutes without.

Immediately we can see that difference Laporte makes to the City defence. He is the leader, the organiser and their best defender (especially now there’s no Vincent Kompany). City’s defence is significantly weaker without him. But that’s not really that much of a surprise really, you would expect any team to be poorer defensively if you take their best defender out.

What’s more telling is the change in City’s attack. With Laporte City were averaging 17 chances per game, without him this drops to 15. In terms of actual goal attempts, we see a change from 21 shots with, compared to 20 without. Although these differences are small it’s unusual for the absence of a centre-back to have such an effect. If we look at Big Chances we see City averaging 4.5 per game with Laporte compared to 2.5 without, at a rate of 1 every 18 minutes with against compared to 28 minutes without.

Whilst it’s worth considering that the sample size is much smaller with Laporte, the sample size without includes the Watford 8-0. For me, this changes how we need to assess City. They haven’t suddenly become a bad team – Sterling, KDB etc haven’t suddenly become bad picks. We need to consider the changes in team structure and style of play that Pep has been forced to implement in Laporte’s absence. His return when it comes could be the ticket we need.

Really interesting topic there JK and I think you're right.

When Pep is forced to play Fernandinho at the back, I think it shows how he's really not that confident in his defences abilities (though arguably you could say the Fernan move was coming anyways, given the similarities between and what Pep did with Mascherano) and I think that's echoed throughout the team.

Rodri seems to offer a bit of security, but it frequently seems that the midfielders and primarily KDB will often find themselves far more wary of their defensive duties than before. Perhaps it's just a lack of the uncrushable confidence from previous season, perhaps it's just because teams have figured out how to beat a Pep Guardiola City team, but it certainly feels like the loss of Laporte has taken the wind out of their sails and no Sane might have removed their plan B.

Great to see the stats behind this.

You know though that City will now inevitably run riot vs Arsenal 😉

I know I’m like a broken record on this - but I still can’t believe we have the full story on how Man City went into this season with only 3 centre halves on their books, two of which Pep has a pathological aversion to even playing alongside each other

The Rodri money should have went on a centrehalf, not on another central midfielder to add to the approximately 147 they already had on the books

Very very strange - we might hear the full story someday if Pep or Arteta ever bring out a book

For my money there was a falling out that we haven’t yet heard about

TLDR: Man City lost the league during the summer transfer window

Rodri was needed, the Cancelo money should have gone on a centre half

Maguire was due a medical but Leicester increased the asking price 10mil on the same day, City said no

Should have had a plan B and C

I honestly don’t think Rodri was needed more than a centre half - they could have gotten by without Rodri & been so much closer to Liverpool than they could have without a centre half

Such a Bizarre decision for a club with city’s resources not to sign one

I think it came down to not finding one in the end. Pep was willing to settle for Maguire and they went a long way down that route . . .only for Leicester to ask silly money that only United would pay for not much more than an above average player. It was a risk and one that has cost them greatly, but while City have spent a lot they rarely spend stupid money on a player and what United were willing to pay was stupid money.

Would be you be saying the same thing about Klopp and Liverpool if VVD does his ACL on January 1st?
If that happened the title race would be wide open.
Matip, Loveren and Gomez are no better than Stones, Otamendi and Fernandinho.

Matip is miles above the others.

well Fernandinho does a good job, but the effect is having to remove him from the midfield where they really need him

Liverpool’s entire defence rests upon VVD. Not saying Matip is no good, however a Liverpool defence of Matip/Lovren or Matip/Gomez is frail in comparison as is a City defence without Laporte.

I'm not sure I agree with that ; it's not just Laporte missing its Fernandinho missing from midfield ; Rodri as others have pointed out isn't a like for like swap. It's like Liverpool playing Henderson or Fabinho at the back ; they can do the job but both would be massively missed protecting the back line.

How about spending that ridiculous amount on Cancelo when they were so obviously short at CB, it's not like they couldn't have spent a few more quid.

I don't think his importance has been overlooked. It gets mentioned on the radio frequently.

Almost a complete squad though for a 4-3-3 system.

    GK: Ederson, Bravo
    LB: Mendy, Zinchenko
    RB: Walker, Cancelo
    CB: Laporte, Otamendi
    CB: ?????, Stones
    DM: Fernandinho, Rodri
    CM: KDB, Foden
    CM: Silva, Gundogan
    LM: Sterling, Sane
    RM: Bernardo, Mahrez
    FW: Aguero, Jesus

Not sure what your point is. Otamendi is vastly inferior to Laporte and ????? is probably superior to Stones. That is what the article was about.
