Burnley 1-0 Newcastle

Goals: Chris Wood (£6.2m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: Wood x3, Westwood x2, Erik Pieters x1 (£4.5m)

Burnley got back to much-needed winning ways with a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

While Sean Dyche celebrated the first three-points since Gameweek 13, the crucial development for Fantasy Premier League managers was a return to normal service: clean sheets at Turf Moor.

“We wanted a reaction to the defeat at Tottenham last week, when we weren’t ourselves. The first thing was the performance, but you also want the win and we’ve just about edged that, I feel. We’ve had a one v one and knocked on the door a few times. I was pleased with the performance actually because they are a tough side. Steve (Bruce) has got them organised and they are solid, so to get the win was very pleasing.” – Sean Dyche

“A clean sheet and three points are what you dream of. It was a difficult game in difficult conditions but one we came through. We knew they are a good outfit who’ve had some positive results in recent weeks. But we fancy ourselves at home against anybody.” – Phil Bardsley

Pope kept a much-needed clean sheet against Newcastle on Saturday

The latest home shut-out means that Nick Pope (£4.7m) and his colleagues at the back continue to offer reliable defensive returns against the so-called lesser sides when playing in front of their own fans.

So far this season, six clubs have to Turf Moor who finished outside the top-six in 2018/19. Newcastle’s blank means that Crystal Palace are the only such side to have actually scored in Lancashire; the Magpies, West Ham, Everton, Norwich and Southampton all failing to find the net there.

Whether such a statistic will benefit Pope, James Tarkowski (£5.1m) and Ben Mee (£5.0m) over Christmas and into the New Year remains to be seen though.

Between now and Gameweek 25, the Clarets face Bournemouth, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United away from home, while Aston Villa, Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester United are the next four to come to Turf Moor.

Burnley have just one clean sheet on the road this season, while last season’s top-six sides have scored a combined 16 goals in four matches at Turf Moor in 2019/20.

Due to a slew of injuries, Bruce had to play Joelinton on the flanks at Burnley

It is also fair to point out that Burnley’s latest clean sheet was helped out by an increasing number of injuries at Newcastle.

The Magpies came to the Lancashire without Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), whose pace has caused problems recent, Miguel Almirón (£5.8m) and Jonjo Shelvey (£5.1m), who has three goals to his name since Gameweek 14.

“Almiron more than Shelvey. Muscle injuries. We’ve just got to be careful. We run the risk, if they’ve got a slight strain or whatever. We can’t have them pulling up and missing six to eight weeks. Let’s see where they are in the week and we’ll go from there.” – Steve Bruce

Without the pace and creativity of those players in midfield, it was hard for Newcastle to create many chances.

Furthermore, with Christian Atsu (£5.4m) the only fit recognised wide-player, Steve Bruce was forced to shift centre-forward Joelinton (£5.6m) onto the right-flank of midfield in his 5-4-1 formation with Andy Carroll (£5.4m) leading the line.

If Newcastle have the same limitations over Christmas, which looks likely given the current status of Saint-Maximin, Almirón and Shelvey, it bodes well for defensive assets of Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Everton and Leicester, who all face Newcastle between now and Gameweek 21.

“Almiron and Shelvey and Saint-Maximin affected it, of course. I never really want to make excuses but of course, that’s why I want a bigger squad. I’ve used the full squad today and they weren’t quite good enough but I thought we didn’t do much wrong.” – Steve Bruce

Bardsley made a quick return from injury for Gameweek 17

By contrast, Burnley were helped by an influx of players returning from injury.

Phil Bardsley (£4.3m) overcame his yellow flag to start at right-back in the place of Matt Lowton (£4.4m).

After three matches out, Ashley Westwood (£5.4m) was back in central midfield alongside Jack Cork (£4.9m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.2m) started next to Chris Wood (£6.2m) up-front in the 4-4-2 system.

“The players coming back did make a difference. I’m not doing the other players down because we have a good and competitive squad this year. We don’t carry big numbers so when you carry a few injuries it does look a bit thin, all of a sudden, but there was a reaction to them coming back and it’s a great three points.” – Sean Dyche

Wood got back on the scoresheet for Burnley, having gone three matches without a goal. However, with those tough fixtures approaching, he may prove less appealing than a number of alternative similarly-priced forwards.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Bardsley; McNeil, Cork, Westwood, Hendrick; Wood (Rodriguez 85′), A Barnes.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems (Gayle 71′), Dummett, Fernández, Schär, Manquillo; Joelinton, Hayden, S Longstaff, Atsu (Muto 80′); Carroll.

Best week for a punt, but Alli is a good one. 5 goals in 5 games against Chelsea (+ 2 assists) and stats under Mourinho are beginning to mirror his best goal scoring season of 16/17.

Yup. But grealish could be out soon for 1 game and it's Christmas... Nice to have that backup, and I'd rather have 7 points sat on my bench just incase then being forced to play the same player because I'm too scared of benching a haul if that makes sense

Yh same feeling.. Salah was at his mercurial best against watford and looks to have put his ankle issues to the past Was playing more advanced as well while i felt mane was playing a little wider.

Saying that both should do well but Salah being on pens and playing more advanced sways it towards getting him in

TAA is safer from rotation and Liverpool's fixtures look better for clean sheets than goal fests. Also you can replace Mane with a star player but the same can't be said for TAA.

Yh TAA is a season keeper.

He's oncourse for 10+ assists once again and probably 10+ cs if liverpool tighten up in second half of season

Yea, but on Mane i will lose 0.4 and on TAA i lost 0.2 in price...so i can buy back TAA anytime, and probably TAA will drop at least 0.1

              • 6 Years
              6 years, 7 days ago

You would loose 0.3 on Mane if you got rid of him yesterday. 0.2 if you got Son as a replacement as he is likely to rise again before you want Mane back. You won't loose anything (you can even gain money via Son) if you go for Salah

I was this close to take a switch before Bournemouth because i knew that Mané was going to be benched, would have been 17points swing and 10 this week, so sometimes being patient could be an obstacle.

I would rather have Salah than Mané now and it´obvious, ball is yellow and grass is wintery cold. It´s cold in the egyptian mountain, while the lowest night temperature is high above ten in senegal. ha ha

Sakho is back so Tomkins and Sakho probably first choice pair of cb but both are a bit injury prone, Joel Ward is out over christmas but no specific other than that. Safe until new year, and then they have 2 not so good ones and then Ward prob is back. By the time you´ll get price rises from Kelly to match Wards purchase price and palace have greens to easter, could be an easy switch.

Leicester more sound defense wise than Arsenal, Chelsea is weak down the flanks, Son plays like a winger who drifts inside. City are difficult to read at the time being, but Burnley, United and Arsenal game they looked better and KDB is involved in pretty much everything they do offensively.

Spurs have been good since Mourinho but struggled vs United and a bit lucky vs Wolves and while i don´t consider United a top team at the moment they are a top team in those games vs top sides. Chelsea is in that bracket, so my worry is how will Spurs do vs Chelsea?
Also think City game is difficult to pre-read, if it´s anything i think Leicester were a bit naive vs Chelsea and Liverpool away, gave a way a lot of chances and last game they looked somewhat fatigued, Pukki on another day would have had a hattrick.

Silva out will make me wonder if taking a chance on KDB OOP again, but not sure. Bilva was benched also and i can´t really see that happening twice.

      • 8 Years

Two non playing defenders is a worry, and Grealish looks a shoe-in but since you have some struggles in defence i would prolly sort that out? Soy also a not so good option this week and next, i would prolly play Cantwell this week even if Grealish looks tempting.
TAA and one of Tomori/Lowton for something like Maguire and Aurier? That way you have a price point of maguire that is not that long way to get TAA back in 2 moves when you want.

Attacking wise it looks good, so a hit for the last non playing def could also be a way to keep you on front foot, it could make things easier if you get new injury or suspension and/or it gives you a position where you can save a transfer next week. Something like Kelly /Rico could then be an option in that case. Normally a hit like this is not what most would do,but in this case i think it has it´s merit

1st 2 more likely starters if fit.
I'm looking at Connolly as Brighton playing well and have fixtures.
Greenwood should be the best option but OGS just not brave enough to give him a proper run

Impressed by Brighton. Got good fixtures.
GW20 it'll either be a like for like swap Ings for Maupay or maybe Connolly to allow a 7.5m 5th mid.

    3. bench boost for every gamew…

arsenal now intensifying manager hunt so makes picture unclear about Martinelli i would suggest. Connoly seems to brake down every game he plays. Greenwood imo, but none are very tempting. With the schedule though, he could be a starter in the gameweek sandwiched between boxing day and new year, but that´s just speculation.

They Will both play against Leicester.
If they win that game I Think is very likely that one of them Will be rested against Wolves and the other for the Sheffield game.

Can see something similar. Am considering swapping Mane out for Kane (BHA, nor, sot) and then picking between Salah and Mané in the new year.

I'm thinking of ridding TAA until gw25? He can easy come back into the team if needs be and not keen on pools fixtures for a while. Only worry is high ownership and he's on corners/Fks but honestly can't see many cleansheets. Watford should've scored 2 atleast

Wouldn't be a straight swap, I'd be downgrading to allow Connolly to become Jimi or Rashford and then possibly mousset to Jota or Mount to Martial/Grealish. Upgrades worthy imo

    Case for Grealish.

He ticks all the boxes and is absolutely worth a punt at just 6.2m.

    - Great Christmas Fixtures gw18-21 (SOT NOR wat bur) followed by (MCI bha WAT bou)

    - Form. Grealish involved in 6 goals in last 8
    (4g 2a)

    - Great Differential. Both in overall and top 10k owner ship

    - Talismann and safe from rotation which is crucial in Christmas

    - He's on set peices and possibly pens

    - Villa are good attacking team as well. In fact currently only top 6 + wolves have scored more goals than villa

    Thoughts. Are you Sold?

Not sure anyone threatens his place but just thinking it’s the time of year where key assets might be protected with a view to the long term.

Same principle as Origi starting ahead of Mane Salah

Planning on having M&S double up (Mane and Salah) going forward.
    Currently on:

    Ryan, Martin
    Aurier, Soyuncu, Lundstram, Kelly, Rico
    Son, Mane, KDB, Maddison, Alli,
    Vardy, Tammy, Connolly

2.6M in bank for Son ➡ Salah (next week or two).

    Will Salah will outscore Son?

I don’t think historical results such as individual player stats against a certain team are more than a coincidence. The way Chelsea plays this season is completely different to the way they played under Conte or Sarri.

Any love for Lucas Moura ? Cracking diff

I was all set for Zaha > Alli but Lucas has the better stats of late, and I'd quite possibly move Son on in a week's time to finance the return of Salah

Yep, leaning toward Pulisic-Elneny to Moura-Traore.

He will probably get rotated every now and then but thats fine at that price. Can always change him to Silva or Richarlison if required.

    4. Conners

Rotation put me off getting him, plus the risk of 1 or 2 pointers when he's subbed on in 80th minute.

He’s a very decent call but has been competing against Ings who has talisman status and has been on fire.

Definitely room for a sub 7.0 striker with Pukki (!) and Jota both looking interesting.
