Fantasy Premier League managers are set for perhaps the trickiest captaincy debate of the 2019/20 season so far.

Gameweek 18 features a blank for Liverpool while Manchester City and Leicester go head-to-head at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

That has all but ruled out most of the usual candidates for the captaincy, forcing Fantasy managers to look elsewhere for the armband.

With a whole host of options mentioned this week, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you work out who you should be backing.

We’ll be assessing the statistical form of Premier League players over their last four matches and will compare them against the defensive numbers posted by their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who are signed up either through a monthly or season-long package will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

After weeks of domination by Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), the captain poll is topped by Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) for Gameweek 18, although it’s not a particularly large lead for him.

The Manchester United forward has earned backing from 18.1% of the voters ahead of a trip to Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Despite a blank against Everton last time out, Rashford has attacking returns in five of his last six Premier League outings, amassing a total of five goals and two assists in that time, helped, of course, by his role in Manchester United penalties.

Watford may have shown some defensive improvement against Liverpool, in their first match with Nigel Pearson at the helm, but they have still struggled against the so-called top-six this season.

In six matches against such opposition in 2019/20, the Hornets have conceded at least twice on five occasions, including most recently at Anfield in Gameweek 17.

Not far behind Rashford is Son Heung-min (£10.1m) ahead of Spurs’ meeting with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Despite blanking at Manchester United and Wolves in his last two away trips, the South Korean has attacking returns in every home match under Jose Mourinho so far.

He registered two assists when Bournemouth came to north London in Gameweek 14 and got himself a goal and assist in the Gameweek 16 crushing of Burnley.

Chelsea make the short journey north in Gameweek 18 still without a clean sheet on the road this season. In fact, they have conceded 17 times on the road, only Everton (18), Watford (19) and Aston Villa (19) have let in more goals on their travels so far.

Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.3m) incredible 19-point haul against Arsenal means he is the only asset from Saturday evening’s hard to call clash between Manchester City and Leicester receiving much consideration for the Gameweek 18 captaincy.

13.6% of our voters have declared the Belgian the best candidate for the armband this week in spite of the Foxes’ defensive record.

Brendan Rodgers’ men will come to Manchester having still conceded the fewest goals this season (11) and the highest number of clean sheets (seven), three of which were secured in their last four away trips.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) heads up the chasing pack as Wolves travel to Norwich. The Canaries have the second-worst defensive record this season, having conceded 35 goals in the first 17 matches of the campaign.

That said, Daniel Farke’s men did manage to restrict Leicester to a 1-1 draw last time out. Either way, Jiménez, backed by 7.9% of the voters, has attacking returns in eight of his last 10 Premier League outings, a fairly impressive level of consistency.

Richarlison (£7.9m) is not far off the Wolves man, with the support of 7.6% ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Goodison Park. The Gunners remain defensively poor while the Everton man has goals in four of his last six.

Jack Grealish (£6.2m) has certainly not alienated Fantasy managers after missing a penalty at Sheffield United last week. 5.4% of our voters have backed him for the Gameweek 18 captaincy as Southampton, without a clean sheet since Gameweek 5, come to Villa Park. The midfielder has four attacking returns in his last three home starts.

4.5% is where we find Vardy ahead of the clash with Manchester City. It is possible that the forward has been somewhat unfairly overlooked by voters this time around.

Vardy has attacking returns in each of his last nine outings while Manchester City have kept just one clean sheet at home since Gameweek 8, Wolves, Southampton, Chelsea and Manchester United all finding the net at the Etihad Stadium between then and now.

Dele Alli (£8.7m) and Harry Kane (£10.9m) are both backed by 3.8% ahead of facing Chelsea. The midfielder has proved more reliable under Mourinho, returning in all but one match, while Kane has blanked three times.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) has four attacking returns across his last two away matches (Norwich and West Ham), which has encouraged 2.9% of our voters to back him for the captaincy when Arsenal travel to Everton.

Danny Ings (£6.4m) was arguably unfortunate not to get a hat-trick against West Ham so has been handed the backing of 2.9% in the poll for a meeting with Aston Villa, who have conceded more penalty box shots than any other side this season.

Raheem Sterling (£11.8m), John Lundstram (£5.2m), James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m) and Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support in the poll.

A common strategy employed by many FPL managers, is to double up on attacking assets from one club when they have a good run of form / fixtures.

I’ve done it this season with Sterling + David Silva from Gameweeks 1-8. In Gameweek 9 I took it further, adding Hudson-Odoi + Abraham, and in recent weeks it’s been Pulisic + Abraham.

A quick look at the current overall top ten managers, reveals this strategy has been widely used by them this season.

Current no1 Nick Tanner has three attacking double ups in play - Maddison + Vardy, Son + Kane plus Martial + Rashford.

No3 Magnus Carlsen has Mane + Salah and Son + Alli, and like Nick, had three on the go back in Gameweek 10 with Sterling + De Bruyne, Maddison + Vardy and Felipe Anderson + Haller.

Is this a strategy you’ve used successfully this season, and if so, who with?

For managers looking to employ an attacking double up over the next few weeks, which teams should we be looking at?

… and could we take it as far as Nick and Magnus, with three attacking double ups from different clubs in our squads?

This. It can pay off big for those managers who it works out for, as seen above. However, I'm sure there's plenty of managers who have been less fortunate with their picks and have not been successful. I had KDB and Sterling myself up until a couple of weeks ago. Mount and Abraham also worked out well for me for a while.

That's thinking too short term. The aim of this game is to maximise your points over 38 gameweeks, that's it. It doesn't matter if you have a horrible week if your net total is increased over several weeks. This is why the concept of "coverage" is garbage. Spiderm4t, a former FPL winner, tripled on Stoke defenders during his winning year. It just makes logical sense. Less consistent scores, but higher points long term.

Tielemans + Vardy did not go so well for me. I should have probably gone for Maddison though and not act too clever.

Mount + Abraham was a great attacking double for me few weeks back.

Kane + Alli served me will in GW16 but now I have switched Kane for Son.

Salah + Mane is something what im considering for GW20 onwards

Since I went Alli+Son and Salah+Mane my rank has risen nicely, probably just a coincidence though - as Man City players haven't been performing as well (up until last week) - I'm thinking of going Sterling+KDB or Martial+Rashford for a couple of weeks..another option for this week is Richarlison+Baines(kinda attacking)

    6. Don Kloppeone

I currently have Vardy / Maddison, Son / Alli as my double ups.

I have also had in prior weeks Kun / KDB and Tammy / Mount.

I have found that they have all had their moments but you have to be ready to chop and change as form and/ or fixtures wax and wane.

From GW19 or 20 I am considering moving to a single Spurs attack (Son or Alli undecided) with a LIV double up (Salah/ Mané) and KDB (and Vardy of course).

Personally think 6 attackers from 3 teams could be a bit much.

Attacking double ups are good but I feel that triple ups require a lot of patience that I personally dont have. Unless the team they play for absolutely smashes opponents week in week out its very likely that at least one of the players in the triple up gets poor returns over a few game weeks and ends up being shipped quickly.

And its pretty bad to have a triple up when fixtures turn too.

It’s a hit or miss strategy. Outcome distribution should be higher, why you find this strategy in the top (and some in the bottom).

Not sure about attacking triple ups but defensive triple ups have been very effective in the past. Strong defences, with a nice run of fixtures, at good prices, is the sign it's time to triple up. Pulis' Stoke was a good example.

Leicester and Spurs are the obvious ones.

But Liverpool double while expensive is possibly the most lucrative and then there's also MUN with Martial + Rashford.

The one I'm eyeing is City. Aguero or Sterling to accompany KdB once fixtures turn for City. GW 20-24 for City reads: SHU EVE avl CRY shu

i think you also have to consider the price point too.

      Vardy & Maddison
      Son & Alli
      Salah & Mane
      Sterling & KdB
      Auba & Laca

Salah and Mane, for example, is a big chunk of your TV, and if Liverpool blank then the rest of your team may be a bit spread thin.

Personally, if my double ups do not kill the rest of my team I will go for it.

This week and up to GW23 it’s Vardy & Maddison and Son & Alli for me

Have had a few different attacking double ups. Maddison and Vardy has been my best one. Mane and salah did well for last 2 weeks but mane has made way so KDB and Son can come in. Pulisic/Mount and Abraham has been less good for me and now I'm left with just Tammy.

The Chelsea double up hasn't really worked out so far, unless you got on Mount and Abraham early.

Hopefully this argument can help stop people referencing 'coverage' as if it means anything.

Personally I look for the best option in each position/price range in my team based on current form and upcoming fixtures. This often means having more than one attacker from a team who have good fixtures.

With players £6m+ I never consider whether I have one or three players from the same team, I just look for the best option I can find.

The only time that the team the player plays for becomes a factor is when it is someone that will be benched sometimes. In an ideal world I will have 4 or 5 players rotating for the final two starting spots in my team so I'd rather they played for different teams.

The concept of coverage does exist and is quite reasonable. If you consider a strong team like Man City with a good run, the risk of having no attackers from that team is when they score 5.6 or even 8 goals, there is a high likelihood that most of their attackers will get decent scores. Combined with the high ownership of these players, having no coverage can cost you a huge red arrow.

Afternoon Tom, in terms of defensive double ups, I've had Henderson & Lundstrum all season. Am currently on WC and considering Ryan & Montoya + Lundstram & O Connell, they work quite nicely together fixture wise. I've looked at the popular Guiata Kelly double up too but not sure about Palace with so many defensive problems.

Yeah I think Palace's ship, at least defensively, may have sailed. Not to say they won't keep one or two clean sheets, but I think there are better options out there.

Slightly off topic but who would you be targeting GK wise if on WC this week ? I've been looking at Ryan/Henderson combo, a fair bit of money on a rotation pair but Ryan covers Henderson's up coming tough fixtures well.

I’m considering doing the defensive double up on Leicester after the city game. Could be Soyuncu and Kasper/ Ben. Already have SHU defensive double which I may break over Christmas. Currently don’t like any team for attacking double/ triple up as fixtures are meddling for the good attacking teams and CPL, BOU and MUN are a bit meh form wise. Also with blanks on the horizon it’s better to move onto double up’s once eliminated from FA Cup

I actually rarely use double ups and can't remember if I've ever used triple up. Just like spreading the risk, more then putting all the eggs in one basket. For example now I have main players from City (KdB), Pool (Mo), Spurs (Sonny), Utd (Rash) and Lei (Vardy). This are all players playing well and returning in almost every game. Also for backup I have Mousse&Grealish - two good players and very important for their teams. Had Puli before also but think Tammy is the best option from Che. Earlier in the season I had Auba cause he is also a class no matter poor Ars.

This strategy has been good so far cause teams change every week with form&results. City isn't that machine like last seasons and Pool is wininnig by minimum margine most of the time. So one team(player) covers for another each week. If I have a gut or see that someone will start smashing I will double up again. For now I am happy with only one Ace from each team.

      I've got 4 double-ups and 1 triple-up:

      TAA+Mane
      Maddison+Vardy
      Alli+Son
      Martial+Rashford
      Henderson+Lord+Mousset

Of these the TOT and MNU assets are recent acquisitions, but the LEI ones have been the most fruitful - and both tend to combine quite nicely.

      Run through the process

Step 1: Identify the teams who have the ability to score lots of goals over a sustained period:
Man City, Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester, Liverpool

Step 2: Which of these teams have fixtures to score lots of goals:
      Spurs - GW 18-24
      Man City - GW 18-24
      Chelsea - GW 19-24
      Leicester - GW2 20-24

Step 3: Which two players from each team should you get?
      Spurs - Son and Alli
Man City - KDB and Sterling
      Chelsea - Abraham and ?????
      Leicester - Vardy and Maddison

Step 4: Who to prioritise getting in?
Focus on Spurs and Man City for GW18. Chelsea from GW19 and Leicester from GW20.

Not even in the top 10. Stats and form vs CHE should make him a decent shout, right?
