Rashford and Martial reward patience in big win over Newcastle

Manchester United players rewarded the patience shown by owners in Gameweek 19.

Despite losing at Watford and going behind against Newcastle, they went on to win 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, owners of Sheffield United defenders were left disappointed by Watford getting a breakaway goal at Bramall Lane.

We’ve got all the latest Fantasy Premier League talking points from those two matches in this Scout Notes article.

Man United 4-1 Newcastle

Goals: Anthony Martial x2 (£7.7m), Mason Greenwood (£4.3m), Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) | Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m)

Assists: Andreas Pereira (£4.9m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) | Joelinton (£5.6m)

Bonus Points: Martial x3, Greenwood x2, Wan-Bissaka x1

Manchester United attacking assets went some way to disproving the theory that they can only deliver against bigger clubs as they thrashed Newcastle 4-1 on Boxing Day.

Following a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Watford, Fantasy managers were perhaps a little less trusting of Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) and Anthony Martial (£7.7m) but, despite a disappointing start to their Gameweek 19 match, the Red Devils responded ruthlessly.

Martial bagged himself a brace for a 15-point haul and arguably could have netted a hat-trick while Rashford nodded home his 11th league goal of the campaign and scored six points.

While Newcastle did gift two goals to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, seeing them take apart a side that had, to some extent, set themselves up to defend should encourage owners of Manchester United attackers.

They had been accused of not being able to break down compact sides recently but did it perfectly at Old Trafford.

Crucially, the fact that Manchester United were 4-1 up around the hour-mark provided Solskjaer with the opportunity to rest Rashford and Martial in the final 30 minutes – all but securing both starts and relatively fresh bodies for the two players ahead of their Gameweek 20 trip to Burnley.

Owners may feel considerably more positive about that match after Manchester United’s Boxing Day exploits. Not only did they punish Newcastle, Burnley have also conceded at least three times in each of their last four against last season’s top-six.

Solskjaer’s men could be further boosted at Turf Moor by a first start since returning from injury for Paul Pogba (£8.4m).

For the second league match in a row, the Frenchman featured as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford on Boxing Day but an injury to Scott McTominay (£5.1m), as well as 45 minutes against Newcastle, may see him come into the team on Saturday.

“Paul (Pogba) it’s too early to demand too much of him. He’s worked really hard but then it’s been a long lay off. We’ll have to drip feed him in and gradually play him more and more.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Having said that, Solskjaer did hand starts on Boxing Day to Andreas Pereira (£4.9m) and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) in more attacking roles than was afforded to Pogba.

“Andreas (Pereira) and Mason (Greenwood) have done well and they’ll give us fresh legs.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Therefore, with McTominay potentially out for a prolonged period, as is possible, Pogba may well find himself deployed in a deeper role than Fantasy managers would like.

“(McTominay) has done his ligament in the knee. Don’t know how bad. Biggest heart of the lot. Played until half-time. Not sure if he will be fit for Saturday. Probably not.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, McTominay (Pogba 46′); Rashford (Lingard 63′), A Pereira, Greenwood; Martial (Mata 67′).

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dúbravka; Lejeune, Fernández, Schär (Krafth 88′); Willems, Almirón (Yedlin 63′), S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Maquillo; Gayle (Atsu 59′), Joelinton.

Sheffield United 1-1 Watford

Goals: Oliver Norwood (£4.9m) | Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m)

Assists: George Baldock (£5.0m) | Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m)

Bonus Points: Norwood x3, Chalobah x2, Baldock x1

Amid heavy backing for Gameweek 19, the Sheffield United defence was let down by a rare lapse of concentration against Watford.

As per usual, the Blades gave little quarter in their latest Premier League match, restricting the Hornets, typically goal-shy anyway, to just five shots, three in the box and two on target.

Despite that, and registering 12 penalty area shots of their own, Chris Wilder’s men were unable to find a way to win.

The roughly 80,000 Fantasy managers who captained John Lundstram (£5.2m) can certainly feel somewhat unfortunate not to get returns at either end of the pitch.

As already mentioned, Watford managed to make the most of their only big chance of the game, Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m), deployed on the flanks of attacking midfield, converting at Dean Henderson‘s (£4.8m) near-post after going through on goal from a Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m) pass.

By comparison, John Egan (£4.5m) had four chances inside the Watford box but could not get any of them on target, while Ben Foster (£4.8m) did well to stop Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) twice.

“My players were really not at it today as well as they have been. These are precious points in the Premier League and we will take one and move on. We have a positive result even if it was not one of our best and most positive performances. We never played with our drive and energy that got us into this position. If you’re not at full tilt, you will not get the result you want.” – Chris Wilder

While Sheffield United were disappointed not to win at Bramall Lane, Nigel Pearson continues to be pleased with the progress being made at Watford since he took over.

During his short tenure, the Hornets have claimed four points from a possible nine against Liverpool, Manchester United and this season’s surprise package in the Blades.

With Gameweek 20 pitting Watford against Aston Villa who, despite a Boxing Day clean sheet at home to Norwich, have been poor at the back this year, we should keep an eye on their assets as they continue to improve.

“We were far from at our best today. But what should give us encouragement is even when we have not been playing as fluently as we can do, we get something out of it. We still have enough time and games to affect our own season, and it is as simple as that in my view.” – Nigel Pearson

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, McBurnie (Mousset 63′).

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenía, Cathcart, Kabasele, Mariappa; Hughes, Capoue; Deulofeu, Chalobah (Dawson 89′), Sarr (Pereyra 46′); Deeney (A Gray 80′).

Morning. So tired of not owning TAA

    Pope (Button)
    Rico, Soy, Kelly, Lund, Dunk
    Mane, Salah, KDB, Cantwell, Alli
    Vardy, Ings, Tammy

    What to do?

    A) Kelly and Tammy to TAA and Mousset/Greenwood
    B) Go without
    C) Sell one of the expensive ones? And who?

You could do salah or mane and get Taa and Robbo or VVD. A triple Liverpool looks strong and having 2 defenders+1 mid looks better than 2 Mids

your team looks solid. TAA will not return 23 every GW. I'd suggest trying to catch the streak of a player who might on a run. See if you can consider from everton (Sidibe, DLC for Kelly and Ings but only after new year) or brighton (maupay) or utd (martial/pogba).

    Quick vote please on:
    A: Digne & Ayew
    B: Sidibé & DCL
Whereas most weeks the two forwards would be the 1st/ 2nd sub, and Sidibé would be a regular starter?

bourne needs to get their mojo back. Even with fixtures turning not so sure they will be scoring more. but now that king is back to partner wilson up front, things might turn. Maupay a better bet

Thanks mate. I could see any of the 3 of them being rested that’s the issue.

I’d expect WHU to be easier to break down than Wolves though so maybe Vardy is the way.

Does Trent Alexander-Arnold need to come straight back into our teams?

GW19 was brutal for lots of people without Trent, especially those of us who have sold for hits in recent weeks.

We knew he had this kind of haul in him, just wasn't necessarily expected v Leicester (a)

Does he need to come straight back in? What about if it's for a hit?

Wolves is the final game where he could get himself suspended through yellow cards. Will Klopp use this as an opportunity to rest him over this heavy period? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Milner is the only real option right now to fill in so highly doubt he is rested
He probably should straight in but many finding it difficult to fund this in 1 move (more like 3 moves for me)
Still think it’s not worth doing for hits and by waiting a week you’ll know for sure re any suspension
That being said if you can afford to bring him in either on wildcard or free now then do it

    6. Pompel
      • 10 Years

You present good arguemtns that he can wait. Problem might be price increase, and if you think yoou'll bring him in later you'll want a placeholder, for which there is only Robbo at similar price. Unless you plan a double swap to make room later, which is ties you hands. I'm on wild card, so will bring him in anyway, though wary about resting/yc's. So my conclusion if wanting him long term, just get him now.

Unless you're wildcarding soon, it isn't just about whether it's worth a hit. Getting him in for a hit saves the free transfer that you'd otherwise use to get him in later. So if you're guaranteed to get him at some point, doing it for a hit effectively gives you an extra free transfer to spend on another move. It's worthwhile in the long run.

The yellow card totting up rule has changed I think, must be 5 yellows in first 19 games I think, so it's already skipped to 10 yellows as the next target. Tonight's match apart.

Genuinely don't remember a non-captained player having such a destructive week on my rankings in 10 years of playing. Just got to keep remembering it's about point gaps still.
He was coming in this GW as thought Leicester would score at least 1. Chilwell against City made me nervous but never saw this coming.
Yesterday was a perfect storm. You'd struggle to argue he was worth his price for the 1st 18 GWs. Bringing him back in is going to mean taking 2-2.5m from elsewhere for most teams.

I brought him back in for free last night. Fixtures are largely irrelevant to Liverpool this season and they seem to finally be coming into some CS form

Gomez definitely seems to be back in form. But Liverpool were unlucky not to have more CS earlier in the season, conceding a single goal on 12 occasions.

Liverpool got the majority of their clean sheets last season in the first half of the season- when Gomez was playing. Matip offers more going forward with his runs out of defence and his forward passing. It will be interesting to see who starts when Matip is fit again.

But how quickly should that be? At all costs - i.e hits! Or when you have a free transfer.

        Do the fixtures matter?

after last night fixtures can't matter. (even though next 4 look testing).
Go to a top 3 side (that hasn't blanked for 14 GWs) win 4-0.
          BUT
He's probably not scoring those 24 points again.
1st 18 GWs were nothing special for the price.

If you take the previous 18 GWs into account is it just chasing points based on 1 GW?
In the history of the game defender 16+ pt hauls are so rare.

I wanted to get Sidibe in. Looks great option if he stays in midfield but....

Need to clear my head and not kneejerk. This is where Xmas schedule is a killer with games so close together

I've missed his haul, in which he got a quarter of his seasons points in one match. He is unlikely to immediately repeat this, so it doesn't seem worth compounding matters by losing another 4 points to bring him in when there is a chance he is either going to be rested or suspended for one of the next two. (I'm going to look like a right prat when he does it again on Sunday!)

I think before you bring him straight back in you should assess what made you move him out in the first place. Was that thinking flawed or did you have justifiable reasons that you can still back up?

For me, Trent always has this kind of haul in him regardless of the fixtures. With Gomez coming back in lately and seemingly shoring up the defence, he's a season keeper for me.

Depends on your team structure + manager style. I got burnt on transferring out KDB the week of his big haul. Took the medicine straight away and bought him back for a hit.

Held TAA so will look for a 4th mid/3rd def punt instead

If I had sold him I’d definitely get him back in instantly, and for a hit if necessary, without a second thought

He is too dangerous not to own if you value your OR (and your sanity!)

Note - this is not he same as saying he is guaranteed to haul vs Wolves, as he blatantly isn’t, no one is guaranteed to haul in any game, no matter how easy on paper and likewise with blanks, no matter how difficult on paper

It’s why making such short term orientated decisions in FPL is oh so risky

On Sunday - Wolves will kickoff at anfield less than 45 hours after the final whistle vs city tonight. It’s their 33rd game of the season. They have no Wily Boly. Liverpool have an extra days rest. Wolves *MAY* even play a ghost team to freshen their first teamers, and all they’re losing by doing so is the slight chance of a point that might exist were they to put out the first team.

TAA has a very realistic chance (not a guarantee, they don’t exist 🙂 ) of another 20 points - he’ll be taking every DFK, he’ll be on corners, he’ll be putting in crosses like a madman, he’ll be shooting from play... provided Klopp doesn’t decide to rest him that is

But he’s been doing this in every game all season, it’s nothing new - this has been coming, and unfortunately FPL has zero respect for how difficult a fixture is on paper

So if he goes BOOM again vs Wolves, it’s not as if the warning signs weren’t there 🙂

I'm totally on board with this idea, and I did take a hit to get Trent in especially with the DGW announcement. Only watched one game all season without owning Trent, and it was awful. Not going through that again
