Rashford and Martial reward patience in big win over Newcastle

Manchester United players rewarded the patience shown by owners in Gameweek 19.

Despite losing at Watford and going behind against Newcastle, they went on to win 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, owners of Sheffield United defenders were left disappointed by Watford getting a breakaway goal at Bramall Lane.

We’ve got all the latest Fantasy Premier League talking points from those two matches in this Scout Notes article.

Man United 4-1 Newcastle

Goals: Anthony Martial x2 (£7.7m), Mason Greenwood (£4.3m), Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) | Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m)

Assists: Andreas Pereira (£4.9m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) | Joelinton (£5.6m)

Bonus Points: Martial x3, Greenwood x2, Wan-Bissaka x1

Manchester United attacking assets went some way to disproving the theory that they can only deliver against bigger clubs as they thrashed Newcastle 4-1 on Boxing Day.

Following a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Watford, Fantasy managers were perhaps a little less trusting of Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) and Anthony Martial (£7.7m) but, despite a disappointing start to their Gameweek 19 match, the Red Devils responded ruthlessly.

Martial bagged himself a brace for a 15-point haul and arguably could have netted a hat-trick while Rashford nodded home his 11th league goal of the campaign and scored six points.

While Newcastle did gift two goals to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, seeing them take apart a side that had, to some extent, set themselves up to defend should encourage owners of Manchester United attackers.

They had been accused of not being able to break down compact sides recently but did it perfectly at Old Trafford.

Crucially, the fact that Manchester United were 4-1 up around the hour-mark provided Solskjaer with the opportunity to rest Rashford and Martial in the final 30 minutes – all but securing both starts and relatively fresh bodies for the two players ahead of their Gameweek 20 trip to Burnley.

Owners may feel considerably more positive about that match after Manchester United’s Boxing Day exploits. Not only did they punish Newcastle, Burnley have also conceded at least three times in each of their last four against last season’s top-six.

Solskjaer’s men could be further boosted at Turf Moor by a first start since returning from injury for Paul Pogba (£8.4m).

For the second league match in a row, the Frenchman featured as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford on Boxing Day but an injury to Scott McTominay (£5.1m), as well as 45 minutes against Newcastle, may see him come into the team on Saturday.

“Paul (Pogba) it’s too early to demand too much of him. He’s worked really hard but then it’s been a long lay off. We’ll have to drip feed him in and gradually play him more and more.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Having said that, Solskjaer did hand starts on Boxing Day to Andreas Pereira (£4.9m) and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) in more attacking roles than was afforded to Pogba.

“Andreas (Pereira) and Mason (Greenwood) have done well and they’ll give us fresh legs.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Therefore, with McTominay potentially out for a prolonged period, as is possible, Pogba may well find himself deployed in a deeper role than Fantasy managers would like.

“(McTominay) has done his ligament in the knee. Don’t know how bad. Biggest heart of the lot. Played until half-time. Not sure if he will be fit for Saturday. Probably not.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, McTominay (Pogba 46′); Rashford (Lingard 63′), A Pereira, Greenwood; Martial (Mata 67′).

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dúbravka; Lejeune, Fernández, Schär (Krafth 88′); Willems, Almirón (Yedlin 63′), S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Maquillo; Gayle (Atsu 59′), Joelinton.

Sheffield United 1-1 Watford

Goals: Oliver Norwood (£4.9m) | Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m)

Assists: George Baldock (£5.0m) | Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m)

Bonus Points: Norwood x3, Chalobah x2, Baldock x1

Amid heavy backing for Gameweek 19, the Sheffield United defence was let down by a rare lapse of concentration against Watford.

As per usual, the Blades gave little quarter in their latest Premier League match, restricting the Hornets, typically goal-shy anyway, to just five shots, three in the box and two on target.

Despite that, and registering 12 penalty area shots of their own, Chris Wilder’s men were unable to find a way to win.

The roughly 80,000 Fantasy managers who captained John Lundstram (£5.2m) can certainly feel somewhat unfortunate not to get returns at either end of the pitch.

As already mentioned, Watford managed to make the most of their only big chance of the game, Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m), deployed on the flanks of attacking midfield, converting at Dean Henderson‘s (£4.8m) near-post after going through on goal from a Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m) pass.

By comparison, John Egan (£4.5m) had four chances inside the Watford box but could not get any of them on target, while Ben Foster (£4.8m) did well to stop Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) twice.

“My players were really not at it today as well as they have been. These are precious points in the Premier League and we will take one and move on. We have a positive result even if it was not one of our best and most positive performances. We never played with our drive and energy that got us into this position. If you’re not at full tilt, you will not get the result you want.” – Chris Wilder

While Sheffield United were disappointed not to win at Bramall Lane, Nigel Pearson continues to be pleased with the progress being made at Watford since he took over.

During his short tenure, the Hornets have claimed four points from a possible nine against Liverpool, Manchester United and this season’s surprise package in the Blades.

With Gameweek 20 pitting Watford against Aston Villa who, despite a Boxing Day clean sheet at home to Norwich, have been poor at the back this year, we should keep an eye on their assets as they continue to improve.

“We were far from at our best today. But what should give us encouragement is even when we have not been playing as fluently as we can do, we get something out of it. We still have enough time and games to affect our own season, and it is as simple as that in my view.” – Nigel Pearson

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, McBurnie (Mousset 63′).

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenía, Cathcart, Kabasele, Mariappa; Hughes, Capoue; Deulofeu, Chalobah (Dawson 89′), Sarr (Pereyra 46′); Deeney (A Gray 80′).

Just reflecting on that ridiculous score by TAA for me further emphasises that luck plays a bigger part in this game than I think people realise. With Liverpool having no game, it wasn't the worse decision made by those who sold him. To punish them with such a ridiculously excessive score is unfair really.

Luck plays a part of course, but you can make your own luck as well.
For me selling TAA has never been an option, hes been in since gw1,and even without the expected cleansheets he has been ticking over with attacking returns.
The cleansheets will come, and then he will be getting more hauls like yesterday.

Cruel, yes. But we've all known one of these scores has been coming for a long time. It just unfortunate it had to come after a blank and away against Leicester. The kid has a phenomenal right foot.

I transferred him out this week as part of a plan to upgrade Pulisic > Salah.

With selling TAA, you are always playing with fire. I just didn't expect to get so burnt last night.

Think I'm going to correct my mistake and bring him back in immediately. And, instead of Pulisic > Salah, I'll go for Martial instead.

It was rotten luck those who shipped TAA out. But it is like playing with fire.

It wasn't a terrible decision to lose him, and by the same token there are some people who would never have considered transferring him out because he's always looked capable of a 20+ pointer in a way that no other defender does.

The only reason you should have sold him was if he had an injury. They didn't play for one week, you knew he would be back the following week. He's been getting so many attacking returns this season I find it bizarre that anyone would want to sell him

You can argue the point both ways as to wether to sell him or not with 1 blank. Many people had 3 Liverpool players going into that blank and if such teams had unreliable bench players who perhaps aren't even guaranteed to play, you can understand transfering out one of the Liverpool players. Really the point is that 24pts is a ridiculously excessive score regardless of how good TAA or what he is capable of so it's an unfair punishment for those who sold him for good reasons. I had 3 Liverpool players going into that blank, Robertson, TAA and Mane. Fortunately for me, it was Robertson who got the boot mainly because of team value.

Mainly all luck IMO if you know about football. I started TAA this week but when Lundstram hauled he was first on my bench, two of my players didn't start but both came on including Otamendi in the 93rd minute to block his points

Robbo outscoring him and VVD matching him for much less also they hadn't kept many clean sheets so he wasn't providing value and they were playing Leicester who everyone thought would score

Yeah, the decision was quite rational two weeks ago. Son(c) + Alli were supposed to make up TAA points, weren't they? Just feeling gutted, as plan was always to get him back on wc in GW19, which then slipped to GW20...

It depends on how you define “fair”

I still think selling him was never a good decision, let alone not owning him at all - and I’ve been criticised, sometimes harshly for promoting him all through this season

The traditional counter arguments were always “I can just get him in when Liverpool start keeping cleansheets” or “He’s not worth it this year with so many cheap defenders, and with Liverpool not keeping cleansheets”

Anyone will still get criticised for banging the very same drum about Robbo - but he will go BOOM soon too, possibly straight after Robbo > TAA transfers to rub further salt in the wounds - and the cries of “it’s not fair” will ring out once again

But anyone who watches their games, on the eye test, non owners have been playing with fire all season - and if you with fire for long enough, you eventually get burned

They are both absolute perfect FPL players, I couldn’t imagine not owning them both - but that is just my own (sometimes divisive) opinion ultimately 🙂

I can indeed and will be left with 0.6 itb, however Maddison has some great games coming up

Has anybody ever tried a formation with a lone striker and a heavy midfield. Looking to go with the following after this GW:

    Ederson
    Soyuncu Digne Rico Kelly
    Mane Salah KDB Alli Grealish
    Vardy

    Button Greenwood Lundstram Connolly

For now it looks good. But the only criticism i have with this formation is the lack of flexibility. What if strikers like Tammy, Rashford, jimenez go on a spree or u wanted the likes of even ings or maupay. U need to either take a hit or save transfers and that potentiall delays any switch you want to make

Wildcard coming down to a few positions. Had Ings a while but fixtures turning. GK i'm struggling, I would like Maddison but Grealish saves alot of money. Rashford and Utd got gifted a few goals yesterday but he is still 2nd highest scoring forward. Chelsea seem to be wildly inconsistent at the moment putting me off there assets. Coming down to this

    X, 4.0
    TAA, Lundstram, Soyuncu, Rico, X
    Salah, KDB, Alli, Grealish, Stephens
    Vardy, Rashford, X

    A) Guiata, Sidibe, Maupay
    B) Ryan, Aurier, Ings

Feel I trust Palce more then Brighton, would like Sidibe OOP but not sure getting rid of Ings is a good thing.

On wc, andthe Salah/Mané is doing my head in. Currently have both, but as taking a big chunk of budget it requires sacrifices elsewhere, so it probably isn't optimal in terms of overall squad points per million. If going forward with only one, I'm finding it hard to part with Mané who I've got value tied up in and I regard hi as a season keeper. He's surely to be rested in one next two upcoming matches, so looking at points over next two GWs , Salah is the obvious choice. Bu then I will lose TV doing the hokey cokey. Have KDB also btw, and will not downgrade him.
So, on wc, what's the best choice:

    A) Salah , possible swap back to Mané later
    B) Stick with Mané
    C) Both, means two budget strikers in addition to Vardy

    Cheers!

I can't see past having both. It means I'm going to have to lose Grealish (not particularly fussed on that one), bring in Greenwood, and drop Cantwell down to Dendoncker. Also means I won't have a Leicester mid, or any real Man Utd coverage. But, at those kind of prices, if it goes disastrously, or there's an injury, it's a very easy two transfers to really mix up your team again.

I would also have to lose Grealsih and go with Greenwood or lose Alli and go with Ings/Maupay. And can't have Rashford or Martial if going with both.

Folks - I would appreciate your views on this wildcard team. Chosen with some differentials, intending to play 5 in midfield most weeks.

    Ryan / MacCarthy
    Mendy / Rico / TAA / Kelly / Soy
    KDB / Salah (c) / H Wilson / Martial / Alli
    Vardy / DCL / Greenwood

    Thanks to all that advise!

      Avoid Mendy.

Stick to one keeper and 4.0.

      Otherwise looks good.

The dreaded middle gameweek of this festive period. This gameweek has seen the most rotation over the last few seasons..
Players with high ownership that may not start:
Mane (played full 90), Vardy (most likely starts from the bench, Rodgers hinted he will rest him at some point), all man city midfield (48 hours in bw games), Tammy (bats/giroud starts the next or comes in after 60).

if you got taa's haul then it doesn't really matter coz everyone's in the same boat, if you didn't then the prob is knee jerking to make up ground and end up buying someone who's benched. as long a you've got a playing bench just sit back and enjoy the ride...

I started the season with both and have been trying to do some rotation. I haven't been too actively playing this season so haven't really given a thought for a non-playing keeper. Will do now.
