Has Arsenal’s defence improved enough for FPL investment?

Recent performances and a favourable schedule could put Arsenal’s defensive assets on the Fantasy Premier League radar.

While even considering these sorts of players might be considered high-treason by many, it is undeniable that the Gunners have made progress since Mikel Arteta took over last month.

With matches against Sheffield United, Burnley and Newcastle between now and Gameweek 26, there could be a window of opportunity for Fantasy managers looking for differential options.

In this article, we are going to provide an update on Arsenal’s defence to see if Gameweek 22 provided enough evidence of improvement ahead of those appealing fixtures.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the full 2019/20 season, a monthly pass or a discounted package can access it in full.

What progress did Arteta make in Gameweek 22?

It seems fair to say that Arsenal were a little unfortunate not to come out of their Gameweek 22 trip to Crystal Palace with a clean sheet and all three points.

For the first time in roughly a year, the Gunners came into the match with an unchanged starting XI, which appeared to help them established control over proceedings in the first half.

After dominating possession for large spells, the loss of Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) at interval saw them pegged back by a heavily deflected Jordan Ayew (£5.0m) shot and it’s worth remembering they had to play the final 24 minutes with only ten men.

Despite conceding, Arsenal are still showing improvement against the first 18 matches of the campaign, when Unai Emery and Freddie Ljungberg were at the helm.

During that period they conceded 1.5 goals per game but this has reduced to just 1.0 per game between Gameweeks 19 and 22 – Arteta’s first four matches.

However, the question on Fantasy managers’ lips is whether the Gunners are showing enough of an improvement to warrant investment.

In order to do that, we will have to dig deep than the goals conceded during Arteta’s brief time in charge and look instead at the underlying statistics.

What does the underlying data say?

Start Rashford (liv) or Cantwell (BOU)?

Will be starting both Robbo and TAA.

Both players have the hardest and easiest fixtures on paper respectively. I'm edging towards starting Cantwell

I have same debate with Martial and Cantwell!

I don’t expect Utd to get much from the game tbh.

Cantwell on the other hand has on paper an excellent fixture. Just depends if he personally does anything!

Rashford. The bus and break seems to be less effective with Gomez alongside VVD, but United have enough divers that there’s reasonable odds for a penalty at least.

Well guys, on wildcard so looking to improve this draft although I'm content enough with it.
I don't have BB chip so the weak bench isn't a huge concern especially considering both Williams and Greenwood are getting game time.
    Appreciate constructive feedback, cheers:

    Henderson
    Trent Dunk Holgate
    Mane Salah Maddison Son Richarlison
    Rashford Ings
    (Button, Greenwood, Williams, Gibson)

Hi guys, was just messing about with some plans, not entirely sure what to do, trying to practice patience from here on in and not go for stupid big moves etc, so how do these sound below?

    Fabianski
    TAA - Evans - Robertson
    Maddison - KDB - Martial - Mane
    DCL - Vardy - Rashford
    ___________________________
    Button: Lundstram: Kiko Dendoncker

    2FT's, 0.0 ITB

This GW: Fabs + Kiko > Hendo + Williams
    GW24: Evans + DCL > 4.4/4.3 DEF + Ings

Can work around United assets for now as they have Burnley GW24.

    Thanks in advance guys

Love that. I'd be playing Lund, TAA, Robo from 25 to 30 atleast. I'm thinking v similar...

      Alli to Sarr this gw
      Aurier to Robo next gw
Perreira to cheap defender gw 25 and upgrade Martial, Maupay or Cantwell 🙂

Cheers man, same here, i'm actually more than happy just to play dounle pool + double Sheff Utd defence for the forseeable, they top the defences and takes less guesswork out the equation, they're reliable.

Your moves sound good. I think i'm gonna do Fabs + Kiko to Hendo and Williams now before their potential rises, happy with the rest.

I could also do Maddsion + DCL > Sarr + Ings next GW for a hit but not entirely sure yet.

really tough to bench him, but Evans damn loves some headers lately, could easily notch one off a set piece or something. grabbed one last week only for it to be ruled offside.

Bit of a toughie there as all have good fixtures. Probably just use it on a bench player that you plan to get rid of, notably Aurier as i imagine you'd want shot of him? A simple downgrade and saved cash for next GW i'd say.

I'd actually prefer that route to be honest, makes the upgrade to Robbo so much easier, and Williams has to be given that Burnley fixture imo.
Oooo Salah, could certainly be an option if ya wanna go for it, i'm totally bias with double defence though 😉

Been double D all throughout. Tbh, I can't even do Salah without a - 4 and losing Martial or something which I don't fancy at all. May well do Aurier to Williams this gw and then Perreira to Robo. Cheers mate. Means I can keep Alli for the Norwich fixture

Good stuff, best route for sure in my opinion. yeah losing Martial has the potential for a mega fail i reckon, especially at a -4. I like the Aurier > Williams + Perriera > Robbo move much more. If there's any time Spurs are gonan turn it around, it'll be these next 2 games, Alli could shock a lot of people, me included.

Exactly. Nice differential also. Perreira could do well in Gw24 as its also a nice fixture but hopefully Alli, Williams would out score him and someone like Sarra. Especially considering fixtures

What to do here? 1 FT, 0.2 ITB

    Ryan
    TAA - Soy - Lund
    Mane - Salah - KDB - Grealish
    Vardy - Rash - Ings
    (Button; Rico, Dendocker, Kelly)

    A) Save FT
    B) Rico > either Holgate or Williams
    C) Kelly > either Holgate or Williams
    D) other?

Both Maupay and DCL pretty poor choices imo. I feel people are bigging them up as makes them feel better about getting rid of Rashford or in some cases even Vardy

Still pondering how to handle replacing Auba and the double GW.

    A. Auba+Dilva out; Maupay + Mane in (-4)
    B. Auba to Maupay this week, Dilva to Mane next week
    B. Auba out; Firmino in (I think this leaves me enough to buy Grealish and Sarr in the coming weeks if I want to)
    C.Auba+Dilva out; Martinelli + Mane in (-4)

Thought process is Firm easy out for Rash, Rich easy out for most mids and Fleck is the 5 mid with good fixtures after GW 25. Money in the bank to upgrade also.

Personally not keen as would want Rash or martial for gw24. Fleck is better after gw24. And Grealish could easily match Richarlison. I'd focus my transfers on Gaz and a defender but can't see your defence

if you include brighton i would say his fixtures are ok ish, and now the price is almost identical i would at least considered him and then Ings after Liverpool in 25, i own Ings and i´m happy but in a 3 game period and Haller one extra game let´s for the sake of argument say that is Liverpool, it is 2 points extra, almost an assist more, but it also add up to being a forced transfer, so effectively it is -2, both plays Liverpool, so Wolves/Palace vs Everton/Leicester and Brighton in essence, well now i did your thinking job-) Not sure where i would land
