FPL Gameweek 24 – A Single Gameweek Differential

With limited time between Gameweek 23 and 24 I wanted to offer my thoughts on my differential for this week.

I lined up at the weekend with Danny Ings (£6.9m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m), and was more than happy with the outcome.

I’m feeling quite relaxed about the double Gameweek, I’ve been triple Liverpool for quite some time now with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.4m).  My intention all along has been to give Salah the triple captaincy and that certainly won’t be changed or doubted now.

Jiménez was removed from 184,908 teams before the Gameweek 23 deadline.  Many I’m sure opting for the hot form of Ings.  I get it and it made sense at the time.

Whilst I was fortunate to still own him, I am going to take him out of my team in place of Troy Deeney (£6.2m) today.

It may seem harsh to remove the Wolverhampton wonder, but the next three fixtures are potentially pretty tough with Liverpool (h), Manchested United (a), and Leicester (h).  I quickly compare that to Deeney’s next three being Aston Villa (a), Everton (h) and Brighton (a).

It seems a no brainer, though it isn’t just the kinder fixtures that swayed me. Deeney is a beast and I think he’s thriving under Nigel Pearson.  In fact, I can imagine Deeney will continue to thrive under “tough-nut” Pearson at Watford.

I’m a believer that certain players look forward to playing against certain teams in their careers.  Villa fans don’t like Deeney, they have history.  He’s played against them three times in recent years scoring five goals. Two of those goals came in the three nil victory in Gameweek 20.

Against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, he could easily have easily scored well.  He had 15 penalty box touches which was seven more than Ismaïla Sarr (6.2m) who was next best. He had five attempts in the box, (two classed as big chances) hitting the target twice.  Watford are creating chances left, right and centre.  Whilst losing Sarr through injury for a week or two isn’t great news for the Hornets, they have Roberto Pereyra (£5.6m) and new Argentinian signing Ignacio Pussetto (£5.0m) who could step up in his absence.

Like Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), Deeney also missed a penalty at the weekend.  It wasn’t his best and Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.6m) said thank you very much. One thing I can tell you confidently is that Deeney will take Watford’s next penalty.  No man is brave enough to tell him any different!  (Rodgers also confirmed Vardy obviously remains no.1 in the pecking order).

I brought in Calvert-Lewin in Gameweek 23 because I expected him to score, even more so in Richarlison’s (£8.1m) absence.  I also brought in Heung-Min Son (£9.9m), and whilst he didn’t score, he looked lively at times and it makes great viewing seeing the Norwich at home fixture next to his name.

This week, the same applies to powerhouse Troy Deeney.  I expect him to score and I hope he obliges.

Good luck to all in double Gameweek 24.

Liking the thinking with Troy Deeney.

After going Maupay last week I'm already getting cold feet - both Deeney and Calvert-Lewin looking better in the short term potentially.

The Maupay selection is solid mate. He just needs that brace to get him going and the way Trossard is performing he could get it soon. Fixtures are looking very enticing on paper

An interesting take on it, I also bought Son in last week but left Jimenez on the bench (ouch). Jimenez could easily score against Man U or Leicester at the minute. Deeney, Maupay or Calvert- Lewin for a short term fix maybe, or I was looking at Firminho for this double game week instead , none of them impress me as long term investments though.

Yes I agree he's proven to be fixture proof. I just have a strong feeling Deeney will produce. I will certainly be bringing Jimenez back in before long

Agree on Deeney--nice insight. Deulofeu is the new Walcott in terms of "can't touch him" inconsistency but he does have the feel of running Villa ragged.
I'm focussed on L'pool though. Have the same trio as you, Pep, but Salah hasn't had my captain (KdB for past 4-5 weeks) nod for a long time now. Something lacking. Perhaps the ridiculous heights of that 17/18 season cause it. So to come in with a triple would be daring. Though I recall using it too late in the day in past seasons where form is lacklustre or positions set for easing off or rotation. Klopp has vowed it's not over until it's over so would expect him to start both games the same. And with 2 away games, despite, Pool's immense clean sheets, TAA would cert be a gamble. I think I'm in for Salah triple seeing as you also have--and kept--Jiminez for GW23. That's the sickest I've ever felt on a decision (Mooy h/ to Villa--I have favouritism for players I can't sway--I.e. my differential side normally wins) and changed it 2-3x on gameday which I read on hear is a real no-no. I would have felt better with my free transfer Gazzaniga in for Pope but BOTH saved pens and really enhanced the misery (if I didn't fiddle, Pope would have stayed, Jimmy would have started and I'd be a free transfer up).
I've gone FF-mad for 24. My 1st "hit" of the season from the pain of 23 (despite 52pts and climb into 25k overall) riding Leicester duo Maddison/Vardy for Aguero/Noble. I.e. looking to pay for the transfer via West Ham double & go back to my old faithful policy of Aguero indispensible (policy with KdB has worked this season).
Lastly--I'm sticking with Jimmy because I really rate the guy highly. His next best GW was 11 vs Man City. I.e. he performs against all types of sides in my book so I'm leaving him be......
    Cheers

Hi mate thanks for posting. I would never have got rid of Jimenez this week for a hit, I'd have definitely kept. Just can't shake the Deeney feeling but I will be bringing him back in soon no doubts.
Good luck this week and keep going with your great rank so far

    Bench one for GW24:
    A) Dominic Calvert-Lewin
    B) D. Ings
    Tough call...

If you had to I'd say Ings....just because he's more possible to be rested than DCL. Ideally neither mind

Thank you, I was swaying that way too, mainly because Ings could be rested and DCL is at home

I'm be inclined to give Tosun another game. Huge differential mind and he could do well. Right now I prefer Maupay

Tough decision, Southampton have a stronger defence, Bournemouth's is leaky. I'd go with Tosun though, confidence will be high!

    Also one more question:

    A) Double Liverpool defenders: Soyouncu -> Robertson = TAA + Robertson?
    B) Double Liverpool midfielders: KDB -> Salah = Mané + Salah?

I'd be loathe to take out KDB but option B likely has a higher points ceiling.

No right or wrong answer. I've been TAA, Robbo and Salah all season and had no need to change. I like just the one option in midfield from Liverpool when making the captaincy choice so my preference in double defence.
