Potential replacements for Vardy and Mané after Double Gameweek injuries

Once upon a time, Double Gameweeks lived up to expectation with something for everyone. Not anymore.

I know we’re only at the half-way stage but, up until now, this latest one has been one of the worst in living memory.

My joint-highest scorer, Diego Rico (£4.2m) was lost on the bench and on the pitch I had six players that mustered a solitary point each. It’s been a spectacular fail to date.

To rub insult to injury, I was going to sell Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) for Mark Noble (£5.0m), but Marcus Rashford’s (£9.0m) injury only encouraged me to start Mason Greenwood (£4.4m) which was a risk too far.

Weeks of planning went out the window and it just became all the more farcical and unfortunate after seeing Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.5m) get injured in the space of 24 hours.

In many ways millions of FPL managers have had a dire Double Gameweek and my Liverpool players still have another game to play. But realistically, only a captain Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) hat-trick assisted solely by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) can bring about a U-turn. I can live in hope for now.

Vardy Replacement

 1

Vardy’s injury in some ways is just the excuse I needed to sell him. With that said, early reports indicate that he could be back as early as next week. He may have scored 17 goals this season, but should I really persevere with a player that has only scored one goal since Gameweek 16 and has registered eight points in his last four starts? Probably not.

I think it may finally be time board the Danny Ings (£7.0m) bandwagon. The Southampton man has only scored 24 fewer points than Vardy this season, despite playing almost 300 fewer minutes.

Of course, I’m probably two months late to the party and would have to pay a premium price for him but he seems to be one of a small number of fit strikers that has been scoring regularly throughout the campaign.

Ings’ fixtures aren’t bad either. After a visit to his former club, Liverpool, he has a generous run of games until Gameweek 30. With him now in the race to get a trip to Euro 2020 with England, there’s enough incentive for him to carry on scoring goals.

Mané Replacement?

Mane injury latest as Firmino claims Double Gameweek advantage

It may be too premature to speculate, but if the Mané does have a serious injury then I may have to sell him. Of course, for many other FPL managers he is a season-keeper with a lot of tied in value and they may have the patience to keep him for a game or two if he doesn’t play. But I don’t have that sort of will power at hand, especially when I’m also dealing with an injured Vardy and a range of out of form or rotation risk players.

A replacement for Mane will require more thought and consideration when we remember the impact he has had this season.

Put simply, there isn’t really anyone else I could sell him for in a straight-swap.

At a push, I could say Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) but he is lacking in form, with no Fantasy returns since Gameweek 19. However, he has received the fourth-most number of passes (96) in the final third in the last four Gameweeks so seems to be getting the right areas, just without the reward.

But then you have a player like Willian (£7.2m) that has more touches (163) and passes received (122) in the final period than any other player over the same duration but it’s only amounted to 12 aggregate points.

Had it not been for his difficult upcoming fixtures, I may have also considered Son Heung-min (£9.9m). Since the turn of the year, among midfielders, he’s had the second-highest number of goal attempts (14). With Harry Kane (£10.8m) injured for the long-term Tottenham will rely on him even more. I genuinely hope that I don’t have to sell Mané, but if I do, the options look bleak.

Future Planning

I’m probably in a small group of FPL managers that will have two free transfers at hand after Double Gameweek 24 comes to an end. I’m in this position as I spent one free transfer on Brandon Williams (£4.1m) and opted not to buy any West Ham players.

I’ve not seen a green arrow in a long time and whilst knee jerk decisions are tempting during this time of Fantasy Football turbulence, I need to keep a level head, just as Lateriser stressed on Saturday, although I’d still like to carry out some calculated risks.

Doubling up on Sheffield United’s defence could be a viable option when considering Dean Henderson’s (£5.0m) form and their upcoming run of games. I also need to stop ignoring players like Jack Grealish (£6.6m) and Adama Traoré (£5.7m) who have been bargain midfield gems.

Apart from that, I hope Premier League clubs partake in some inspired real-life January transfers that can broaden FPL options and ultimately smash up the template team.

Good move? And with price rises/falls is it safe to wait until Friday?

No such thing as tough fixtures for City even if there is it should work in Kun's favour.
Mahrez when he plays usually scores.

People getting Son becasue they got money to burn and feel like they have to spend it. He is a good player but last few games north London team looked very average and for me none of their players looks interesting at the moment.

Tbh i dont back son because it's spurs. I just don't trust pep and already have KDB so getting Aguero is enough. I agree that mahrez us on form but the risk of him being benched is too much when I'm chasing in my ml

A couple of points to make..
Neither player has actually been confirmed as being out next gameweek.
You can't call a double gameweek dire when no teams have actually played two games yet.
Referencing players who only have a single game and scored one point doesn't really make sense, they are not, strictly speaking, anything to do with the dgw. It's just variance as normal.
No one who has a decent squad would have started Rico this week so it really doesn't matter that he is benched, it was the correct decision at the time so why moan now?
The big questions I have from this article are why hasn't the author owned good value picks like Ings, Grealish or Traore and what does he mean by 'smash the template team', from what I can see the pool of players is big enough thst there isn't a template this season.

I feel there is a template which has evolved. The question as always is jumping on the band wagon while it is a differential and before it becomes template.

But you are right, leaving Rico on the bench was the right call, having mane as TC was the right call but this is FF and while alot of regions are based on stats there is alot of luck involved and inevitably things can go wrong.

I guess it's a case of looking at fixtures, firm and stats and making a calculated decision.

        TAA, Lundstram
        Mane,
        Vardy, Ings

These are honestly the only five players that I would call template on here, much better than previous seasons.

I am always willing to change players. Never on set for the season mentality as I want to be open to look for the next player on form. For example I got ings in when Tammy hot injured by purely looking at stats and fixtures. Many people stuck with Tammy. Arguably now ings has gone up and I will monitor him and possibly move on. The increase in his value will help me strengthen my squad else where

I was, but still felt he was he best option, mainly for assist potential. My defence could do with strengthening (I was going to use at least one of my 2 FT for next GW to do so but wait and see now with Vardy/Mane situation), but it's not too bad and I certainly would say i have a decent squad. Sitting at 760k at the moment, very tempting to hit the WC button.....

I usually WC the gameweek before a double gameweek but do you think I could gain more by using it earlier and then using transfers/hits to get a decent BB team in a double?

Still have FH if that makes a difference.

    Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Does Sheff Utd have a potential blank in the near future? And if yes, which game exactly and under what circumstances?

In any case, we would know for sure before the next GW commences right?

    Thanks in advance.

Is it correct that If Aston Villa beat Leicester in Carabao cup semi final then Aston Villa v Sheff utd will be a blank in GW28

Either NOR vs LEI or AVL vs SHU will be a blank for GW28.

Depends on winner of Tuesday’s AVL vs LEI cup match.

I’ve been playing this game for 10 years and this is the first time I’ve ever made rage transfers. That action is a reflection of my frustration with how my season is going. My OR has plummeted by 1m places thanks to TEN consecutive red arrows and it’s completely my own fault.

Watching my TC Salah miss all those chances against Wolves, having already seen Mane go off injured (choosing double attack over double defence) and backing United (a dumb move) was all too much. Even though the rational part of my brain said “Salah will stuff West Ham” I still made the following moves for a 12 point hit in an attempt to climb back up the OR and my MLs:

    OUT: Mane Martial Ings Greenwood

    IN: Aguero Auba Hayden McCarthy

This leaves me playing a 433 formation with a strike force of Aguero, Auba and Vardy. Nobody in my MLs has Auba or Aguero and hitting captaincies on them might just save my season.

Anybody else in the same position? What are you doing to rescue a poor season?

Usually yes. As I said, rage transfers. At least I have two big hitting differential captaincy candidates as a result during the coming weeks. I’ve still got Trent, Salah and Vardy which I hope covers the other popular captaincies over this run of games.

Unfortunatelyyou mean nobody has auba kun and vardy in you ml YET. There is still a week for this to happen!

I have vardy and mane, gutted yes but no rage. I will look at it by next Friday and decide. I like auba and kun but think Bobby could be a nice pick with that fixture list

I wouldn’t ordinarily make these transfers but, given my OR and position in ML (100 points behind the leader including my 12 point hit) I feel I need to go full on differential to make up the ground.

When I look at my team and I don't like it I am happy to take hits to rectify the situation.
I think I would have just done Mane and Greenwood to Aguero and Hayden this week but it's not my team.
You already have Salah and I would expect him to be your captain for the next 5 weeks.

When I'm not doing well I just carry on trying to put out the highest scoring team that I can without worrying about things like rivals teams and player ownership.

The problem is that all of my ML rival teams look the same and generally they all captain the same player so making up ground without doing something a bit different is almost impossible.

I have no problem with you going heavy up top, but a -12 is a lot though. The issue is also that Ings and Jiminez are considerably cheaper and have a great run of fixtures. However, Aguero and Auba have 25+ goals a season potential in them, so could be a success. Good luck with them!

Abraham is more of a worry than Vardy. I've got two FTs and might actually do nothing with Noble first sub having a decent fixture. I'm tempted to revert to my original team and just bring Alli back for Martial but not this week.

    Ryan
    Trent(vc) Robbo Lundstram
    Salah(c) KdB Grealish Martial
    Vardy Jimenez Abraham

    Noble Williams Kelly

Re: In many ways millions of FPL managers have had a dire Double Gameweek and my Liverpool players still have another game to play. But realistically, only a captain Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) hat-trick assisted solely by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m) can bring about a U-turn. I can live in hope for now.

    Indeed!

That was the point of my comment above. In a low scoring week when everyone scores badly a low score doesn't matter.
You can't really get a dire week for millions of Fpl players. High scoring weeks with high variance in scores are when people can have dire weeks.

Bringing in WHU is not a punt just pure stupidity.

Hammers in full on meltdown mode, Championship site in the making.

Leicester go through in the cup and they blank against Norwich:

    CHE wol MCI blank

Dropping vardy regardless of injury is certainly something I am considering
