634x258 Scouting The Doubles

We continue our analysis of the upcoming double Gameweek 36 by turning our attentions to David Moyes’ Everton. The Toffees performance in Sunday’s 4-4 thriller at Old Trafford extended their unbeaten run to five and, with many Fantasy managers eying up their Fantasy assets ahead of the weekend’s deadline, we run the rule over their potential.

The Prospects

First up for Everton is a home clash with Fulham next Saturday. A look at their recent displays at Goodison Park highlights just how resilient the Toffees have been in front of their own fans. Moyes’ side have five clean sheets in the last six home games, with just a single goal conceded to Arsenal in a run that has seen them keep out the likes of City, Chelsea and Tottenham. The fact that Fulham have netted a mere 11 times away all season – joint-bottom for away goals alongside Stoke – merely adds to the argument that a home clean sheet looks a strong possibility.

From an attacking perspective, the omens look good, too. With the likes of Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar now firmly settled in the Everton first XI, they have clicked as an attacking unit, scoring 14 goals in their last five fixtures – they had previously notched 28 times in their first 29 Gameweeks.

After that, Moyes takes his team to the Britannia the following Tuesday. Given that they’ve just put four past United, Everton will hold no fear for the showdown with Tony Pulis’ Stoke and a look at the stats offers further encouragement. The Potters have scored a mere five goals and failed to keep a clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks, suggesting there’s potential for profit at both ends of the pitch for Moyes’ side.

The Likely Lads

Normally, Leighton Baines would be the first name we’d turn to but it seems highly unlikely he will feature, according to his manager. Moyes admitted in last Friday’s press conference that the left-back will be out for two weeks and, with that in mind, we have to omit him from our thoughts.

Instead, it’s Nikica Jelavic who is the hot property at Goodison right now. The Croatian’s goalscoring exploits have clearly caught the eye – he’s the most transferred in player so far this Gameweek, with over 37,000 Fantasy managers snapping up his services. With six goals in just six starts, his acquisition has added another dimension to Moyes’ side and, with a price of 5.9 and ownership of 3%, his potential as a cut-price differential looks strong. Jelavic is likely to be handed spot-kick duties in Baines’ absence and has also been afforded his share of free-kicks, furthering his outstanding appeal.

Steven Pienaar’s creativity has also played a significant part in Everton’s surge up the table. The on-loan midfielder has slipped seamlessly back into the Toffees first-team and approaches the double Gameweek in eye-catching form; two goals, three assists and three bonus points in his last four appearances has helped him average over eight points per game. Priced at 7.0, though, Pienaar offers strong mid-price potential and – aside from the match against parent club Tottenham – has started every game since returning to Merseyside. Fantasy managers will be worried over last night’s news that a warrant has been issued for his arrest due to a driving offence, though the South African is still expected to be immediately available to Moyes.

Leon Osman is another of Moyes’ midfield certainties. While the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool are likely to rest and rotate, Everton seem more inclined to field a settled XI and Osman seems to have crept under the radar so far. Only 2,000 Fantasy managers have transferred him in, though he’s another man in form, with a goal, a couple of assists and two bonus points in his last three. At 6.6, he’s slightly less on the budget than Pienaar and has already returned three double figure Goodison hauls this term.

At the back, Phil Jagielka has produced the most impressive attacking returns of the defenders available to Moyes. The centre-half has grabbed two goals and two assists this term – Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga have returned a single assist between them in comparison. Priced at 5.3, Jagielka looks the best value of the trio, while 4.6 Tony Hibbert served a reminder of his budget potential with a pair of assists at Old Trafford.

Cheeky Punt

The performance of Marouane Fellaini in Sunday’s draw at United highlighted the Belgian’s flourishing form. With Phil Neville and Darron Gibson sitting deep in central midfield, Fellaini seems to be afforded the freedom that made Tim Cahill such a dangerous Fantasy asset in seasons gone by, as he drifts forward to support Jelavic in the lone striker role. While he’s perhaps unlikely to replicate his 10 point return at Old Trafford, Fellaini’s guaranteed game time and price of 6.1 could prove dividend for those willing to have a flutter.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Chaps, Sorry for repost - lost in the abyss of last post

Some advice needed if you’d be so kind.

So at the moment my gw36 team looks like this.

    Krul
    Williamson – Verm – Caulker
    VDV(c) – Mata – Dempsey – Petrov – Siggy
    Cisse – Tevez
    (Migs – RVP – Kelly – Collins)

and soemthing doesn’t seem right to me. Not happy with benching RVP but seems the right thing to do here.

Thinkign of cutting my losses and doing a 4 point hit Tevez > Jelavic?

    What say ye!?

All about watching the actual games isn't it. I don't have the time (nor the cable) to watch enough games to be *really* good at this. But I do find the more football I'm watching - the better I do! Simple as that really... That's what tells you who's going to score some goals before long

And with that... I'm off to watch MOTD2

Yes of course watching the actual games is preferable but if you want to directly compare 2 players' performance, stats can help, especially if you don't fancy watching all of Bolton's games in order to find out who to target for the DGWs.

I still think the data on shots in helpful!

Yeah, shots (on target) can help you pick a creator as well as a potential scorer. Goals and assists we obviously helpful! It's purely this key passes one that is a bit misleading

Very interesting and I've often wondered about the key passes stat.

I guess what we can take from this is that the key passes stat. isn't 100% reliable. I guess I would argue that in most cases when there's a good chance, a key pass is given to the player who passed it. It can be used to get an idea of who the creative players are but I guess it isn't adequate in directly comparing 2 players' chances of getting assists.

Valencia is a good example I suppose and I learnt to dismiss his statistics for key passes as he fires so many crosses into good positions that don't qualify as key passes.

In addition to this, the player making a 'key pass' is relying on another player to score. Therefore I tend to focus on shots and shots on target now (excluding penalties obviously) and try to only use analysis of key passes sparingly.

The Valencia example is a good one of someone getting under valued by this metric. The Mata one is a good one of someone being over-valued I guess. I think the problem for us FPL players is that - if you didn't watch the games in question - the word 'key pass' conjures an image of a deliciously weighted through ball bisecting centreback and fullback and leaving a striker one-on-one... where in reality it might just as easily be a header in the centre circle from Mikel which Fat Frank goes on to leather over the bar...

Still worth looking at but again - it's pale imitation of watching games.

I guess you could extend this argument to the award of assists. The amount of times I've seen players (in lots of space) roll a ball to another player standing right next to them (also in lots of space) for the second player to then score and get an assist.

...but that's a whole different matter!

I do think Valencia's multitude of crosses arent all useful. Only those crosses where someone is in the box to receive them should count as key passes. But in this case it is irrelevant whether the recipient chooses to shoot or not, it is still a key pass as they had the opportunity.

      I agree completely.

You know, Scholes only ever once got more than 3 assists in a season.

Modric doubters also criticize him due to a lack of assist. Bale only got 1 assist in the league last season.

Excellent stuff. This might go some way to explaining why the Opta-based ICT index doesn't always map all that well to fantasy returns (e.g. Gareth Bale's recent ICT index is still relatively high)

Bale hasn't really been off form so much as the whole team has. He's still getting chances, at Norwich he could've easily had 2 or 3 had the ball been an inch lower or the keeper didn't produce good saves.

You know, I don't agree with you here. Bale goes through these phases when he takes his shots too early, when he is too far out, or too much at an angle. To my eyes, he's in one of those right now.

              Aka his judgement is off.

Sounds like any skilled worker, going through phases of being on the game, making every decision right, and phases of being off their game making many wrong decisions. But at any time this could reverse, and all it takes is a little confidence to boost back into the scoring zone.

              hmmm Bale in?

This is something that statistics can't account for. I guess you have to accept that statistic can only go so far in helping you work out who will score well in the future.

That's not to say that Bale won't start scoring again if Spurs pick up some form. At least he's getting chances to score goals.

It's not a phase, that's how he's played since he's believed his own hype and Redknapps insisted on giving him this free-role instead of keeping him on the left to beat players and cross the ball in which is what he's best at.

Would you suggest playing Riise (2 away games - low chances of keeping clean sheets) or Vermaelen (away to Stoke - but only 1 game), or even take a hit to bring in another one of the defenders mentioned above to play instead?

It's pretty bad. He shot a man in Reno just to see him die and now he's holed up in a shotgun shack in the Ozarks with two 16 year-old girls, a gallon of moonshine and a bazooka.

By my humble calculations the most valuable factor in this insane system is the shots on target. Let us take 1 shot on target (SOT) as the main unit. There are positive and negative influences, so basically you count them both and see the result at the end.

      positive:
      goal = 4-5 SOT
      assist = 2-3 SOT
      cleanie = 2 SOT
      win = 2 SOT
      10 accurate passes = 0.2 SOT
      5 tackles/interceptions = 1-2 SOT
      playing 90 minutes = 1 SOT

      negative:
      shot off target = - 1 SOT
      10 wrong passes = - 0.2 SOT
      5 times dispossessed = - 1-2 SOT
      loss = - 2SOT
      concede goal = - 0.5 SOT
      * fouls, yellow and red cards are also substracting PPI

      Example:
      Aguero vs wolves > goal (4) + win (2) + 90mins (1) - shots off target (5) = 2 SOT
      Clichy vs wolves > cleanie (2) + win (2) + 90 min (1) + assist (3) - shots off target (1) = 7 SOT
(there are other factors ofc, this calculation is very rough but I seem to be very successfull with my BAP predictions)

There are also bonus points for doing things out of position. For example left and right backs flourish this year because of the big amount of PPI given for forward runs for defenders. This is also true for SOT for example. If a defender hits the target twice, without scoring even, you can count him in the bonus pool.

Why is this system so frustrating. Basically if you do nothing and your teammates have done 3 wrong passes, you get the spoils. A crazy example is the 2 bonus points for Walcott who was subbed in the 67th minute and was only running the whole game, contributing with nothing! It was his teammates that fouled, got yellow carded or mislplaced passes...so they got punished for the effort. Another fresh and crazy example is Barfa and Cisse 0 and 3 bonus points against Bolton. The frenchman scored one of the goals of the season and tried relentlessly the whole game with 5 shots (none on target), and then cisse with one touch the whole game which was a goal ofc. The same shit with aguero against wolves, 5 shots off target negate his goal.

I see a lot of questions this morning about people unsure whether or not to take point hits. I don't understand the reluctance to take hits if it's going to gain you points. I've taken over 50 hits this season and it will be closer to 60 before GW38. As long as you get it right more often than not you are laughing. On a DGW it's a no brainer, take the hits.

yea but if ur taking a hit to sell rooney this week and then taking a hit to get him back next week thats an 8 point swing! if you look at the long run and do the maths youll find that more often than not hits dont work out! from my experience anyway

I don’t understand the reluctance to take hits if it’s going to gain you points.

It's the IF in this sentence. Obviously if you get it right more often than not then you are going to do better but it's the ability to predict that.

That said DGWs are significantly easier to justify hits for.

I was a part-timer last season, I didn't change my team some weeks and didn't like to take any hits. This season I just went for it and bought who I thought would do well regardless of the hits. This game is 90% luck really. It's a fluke.

    Good morning all,
I have been stuck on a DGW transfer dilema, Spurs or Everton?

Not choosing individual players, but looking at recent team form and display.

I thought some of you more experienced bods could cast an eye, and give your considered thoughts.

And perhaps someone might find it helpful.

I have looked at it initially on the basis of Form over fixtures, but have also pointed to previous
fixtures to add wait or detract from the purely numbers based approach.

    Looking at Last 8 Games

    Tottenham.
Frequency of scoring : scored in 4 games.
    Clean sheets : 2
Number of Goals : 6 scored, 9 conceded.
Chance of scoring 0.5, chance of clean sheet 0.25
Games included 1 of the top 5 teams, as well as Chelsea.

Now the question is with so few goals, how thinly are the goals & assists spread? How confident are you of picking the right one?

    Everton
Frequency of scoring : scored in 6 games.
    Clean sheets : 4
Number of Goals : 15 scored, 10 conceded.
Chance of scoring 0.75, chance of clean sheet 0.5
Games included 3 of the top 5 teams, as well as Liverpool.

On the fixtures over form argument, Everton have had the more "Difficult" games in that period.

Looking at the team performance, and of course the goal threat, gives a suprising insight.

    Conversion of Shots to Goals

    MU 16.9%
    MCI 18.6%
    LIV 9.3%

    EVE 19.7%
    TOT 5.3%

    Everton playing Fulham and Stoke
Ful 16.7% 78 shots in last 8 games returning 13 goals
STO 9.7%, 62 shots in last 8 games returning 6 goals

Tottenham playing Bolton & Stoke, 2 teams in the relegation scrap, with plenty to fight for, both with a better scoring record over the period.
    BLA : Scored 9, conceded 13, 3 clean sheets
BOL : Scored 8 conceded 15, 0 clean sheets games included Chelsea, Manchester City, Fulham & Newcastle

I have for comparison listed the manchester clubs, as well as Liverpool, the perenial experts at not putting away their chances.

This clearly shows the poor form, or others may call it luck, that TOT is in. TOT is in the top 5 for attempts at goal, and top 10 for attempts on Target.
But shockingly, is in bottom 2 for goals in the 8 week period. Only wolves has scored less goals

The research is limited to these 2 as it was initially for my benefit, as I narrowed down my selection, and are adding 1 more DGW player from
    one of these 2 teams.

We have Evertons form and league topping clinical finishing.
And Tottenhams potential. Is their luck going to change this week. What effect the current Ade / Harry news.

    Good luck with your selection.

Good effort! I'd have stuck with Roo over RVP if I were you.

Having said that, I would also start Valencia over RVP. He tends to shine in away games. I'm sorry to say this...but I don't know where the creativity in Arsenal is going to come from with Walc/Arteta out.

I did think about doing that, but ditching Roo means I can afford to get him back for free next week, and have both him and RVP for their juicy last 2 games. The same wasn't the case if I ditched RVP.

I'm a tad concerned with the lack of service without Walcott/Artetea, but RVP is still getting chances and shots on goal without them. He'll want the golden boot too, so I expect him to score this week against an unmotivated, fading Stoke.

    Back to the stats discussion.

    Walcott vs Lennon

    Pass completion
    70.39% - 80.13%

    Mins per loss of possession
    26 - 79

    Crossing accuracy
    13% - 25%

    Mins per chance created
    63 - 33

Mins per clear cut chance created
    255.2 - 118.8

As you can see, Lennon beats Walcott by miles in every statistic listed. You may say Walcott has 8 goals, but Lennon has 3 and played not far off half the minutes as Walcott so it's still fairly level - Mins per goal is actually 319 minutes to 396 minutes in Walcotts favour. Some of you might be very suprised at that.

So yeah, surely Lennon has to be first choice at the Euros? Statistically him and Johnson are miles and away Englands best wingers. Young and Milner on the left with Lennon and Johnson on the right is who should go.

Assists aren't a relevant stat at all - they weren't even recorded before the PL-era.

As for goals, Lennon has half as much as him in half as many minutes so that's bollocks aswell. Deluded Arsenal fan mate?

He doesn't get talked about because obviously Bale and vDV are more explosive. For anyone that can't afford one of them two though, i'd say he's always worth a punt - especially against teams with slower full-backs and we're playing at home.

Doesn't a lot of this come down to Lennon playing half the minutes though? The more you play the more crosses/passes you attempt and it's a downward curve by nature of where they're playing - i.e. they are attempting a lot of difficult final balls

      Purely from a FPL perspective...

Re: Mins per chance created - Walcott is passing to RVP so I'd rather have Walcott

I don't think you can use statistical analysis like this to decide who is a better player by the way. You have to consider temperament, how they fit into the team, their experience, their hunger etc.

I prefer Walcott to be honest since he can play up front as well.

From a FPL perspective, i'd rather Walcott aswell. Like you say, he gets to pass to RvP and he doesn't have to compete for end product with the likes of Bale and vDV. In actual footballing terms, Lennon is miles better though.

Not taking into account wider team contribution here. Walcott offers more far more to his fullback than Lennon. Also - Lennon, at 25, is supposed to be in his prime. Walcott - has already overtaken him at 23.

Football isn't just quantitative though. You can't simplify everything down to numbers. Apparently statistically Lampard is better than Iniesta - but nobody would rather have Frank in their team.

      Johnson is awful also.

It's wrong to compare Lampard and Iniesta though because they are completely different midfielders. Walcott and Lennon can be compared because they are there to do the exact same job.

Can we with some degree of certainty say that Suarez isnt really a DGW player based on the fact the Kenny will undoubtedly rest him for the FA Cup Final and therefore not play him in the 2nd league match? I suppose this could relate to a lot of Liverpool players but I feel Suarez is the highest risk of being rested.

I'd be amazed if he played the second game of the DGW.

Go and poor yourself a stiff drink. A bloody mary in a tall glass is nice this time of day (GMT)
