Scoutcast Episode 324 – The impact of coronavirus on FPL

The impact of coronavirus is being felt globally, with a number of countries taking measures to stop its spread via changes to the sporting calendar and other events.

Already this is affecting the Premier League, with Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City on Wednesday evening postponed as a precautionary measure. This is due to a number of Arsenal players coming into contact with Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has contracted the virus.

In this latest episode, our Scoutcast trio of Joe, FPL Family’s Lee and Az discuss the impact of coronavirus on Fantasy Premier League and the possible scenarios managers face, such as behind-closed-doors games. Empty stadiums are now commonplace across Europe, including in UEFA Europa League and Champions League ties.

Meanwhile, the crew consider how best to handle the depleted Gameweek 31 schedule and the best players to target.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£10.6m) central role in FPL managers’ squads is also called into question as Chelsea’s form and favourable fixtures makes them ripe for investment.

There’s some very unfortunate teams featured in our ‘Rough with the Smooth’ round-up of your Gameweek 29.

Clean sheets and differentials are also considered and this weekend’s fixtures are a central focus as our trio reveal their transfer and captaincy plans.

This episode was streamed live on Youtube on Tuesday 10 March. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified of future live episodes.

Looks like Martial not part of the Utd squad for their EL match.

Hopefully just a precaution and that he's fit for Sunday. Suffered a very nasty gash to his leg on Sunday.

    @sistoney67

After discussions with Premier League @WestHam say they expect Sunday's game v @Wolves to go ahead. West Ham played Arsenal last weekend.

    1. InvertedWinger
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 18 days ago

So, as I understand this, Wolves are playing Olympiakos in midweek who's owner tested positive and confirmed status on players and all ground staff not known yet, as well as West Ham on the weekend who had contact with Arsenal who also have direct contact with said owner and also have test results pending?

Atleast thats a relief. I still think theres some unnecessary risks involved - should any Arsenal player test positive they should halt the season entirely for a duration of 2-3 weeks

Autosubs are just all luck, I have chosen players as subs who may get me good points if one of my eleven is a no-show. Hence I had Barnes waiting on the bench.

You scored more points because someone you thought would be better than Barnes didn’t play.

Not just that, you scored a lot more points because the person you thought was the 11th best outfielder, did better than most/all (of your) other players.

To pick up 4-8 points off the bench because you have a strong squad, fine, that’s not luck, that’s common sense having a squad.

To pick up 12+ off the bench, is luck.

You made a bad decision benching Barnes, but you were rewarded because someone didn’t play.

If Barnes didn’t come on for you, you’d be cursing your bad luck/decisions especially if it was because of a two minute cameo from someone you started.

No one should say they’re “all” luck, but this week, you were lucky.

I agree with this - out of interest who was your starting 11 that you could afford to bench Barnes home to Villa?

Depending on how strong your 11 was, would determine the "luck" involved in getting Barnes from the bench.

The biggest pandemic in human history? That statement is more fearmongering than anything else. While it may be large in absolute numbers (as we are more people on earth than ever before), it will certainly not be the deadliest one - not even close by the looks of it. Of course, precautions are necessary to avoid a massive number of infections simultaneously, but no need for dooming statements.

Telling people to use their chips soon because the season might end doesn't sound like good advice to me. We don't know what will happen. Euro 2020 could be postponed and the leagues could finish later.

Hopefully not. UEFA saying it will go ahead. They should cancel the league. Not the EURO'S, no way

The difference is that long distance travel is a pre-requisite for the Euros, much like the European competitions. That makes everything much more difficult. I dont think the UCL or Europa will be completed.

But I expect things will go mad over the next two months and then ease slightly, so we will see. I'm not confident in anything finishing at present though - I also believe that leagues being extended because of cancelled Euros is most likely.

Apparently they have a contingency plan of moving it to less effected areas . Not sure we can belive all we read but i would be suprised if they cancel the Euros unless flying to that country is effected

Thats what i meant. Same applies. They saying it will happen this year and denied all false reports of countries asking for it to be dealyed. Of course clubs will want that. If nothing else their players won't get injured or tired by playing in the Euro's. Can't see Uefa bowing down unless completely necessary and we a while off now.

As it stands it is happening this year, but seems inevitable now that it will get pulled as and when the situation gets worse. If it was a FIFA competition it would probably be different though!

I'm not sure I believe that to be honest. Firstly, countries will simply close their borders. The Roma game isnt going ahead because the Spanish government have not given permission for the flight landing - that will become commonplace. There is the question of planning, scheduling etc, which would require so much transport - all in doubt in the midst of a pandemic. All areas will be affected at some point - it's simply too infectious.

Slowly but surely more and more places will become like Italy and everything will grind to a halt for a period.

The Arsenal midfielder's guide to self-isolation
HEY. I’m an Arsenal midfielder who must remain anonymous currently self-isolating due to the risk of having contracted coronavirus. Here’s how I’m getting through it.
    Clear the house
Think you’re alone? Think again. When you live in a 16-bedroom mansion you might think you’re self-isolating only to discover that you’ve forgotten about your spare girlfriend, the staff of a charity foundation you set up and forgot about, and six cousins who’ve been playing cards with your money since 2013. Kick them all to the curb.
    Stay off social media
Everyone wants to know every detail of my life because I’m amazing. That’s just a fact. But what’s not amazing is the coronavirus, my agent tells me. So posing in a Versace suit on a bed covered in 500€ notes is apparently ‘tasteless’.
    Stay out of your cars
That’s a Lamborghini Aventador LP770-4 SVJ with only 600 on the clock, bro. It doesn’t need your COVID-19 reducing its value. However strong the temptation, don’t take it out for a little run. Wait until the nation’s in quarantine and the roads are empty.
    Stockpile ripped jeans
The distressed denim industry is mainly based in Italy, and those dudes are in trouble. Within a few weeks there might be no more jeans ripped from crotch to ankle available and you’d need to recycle a previously worn pair. Stock up now.
    Don’t move to China
If you’re like me, the majority of calls, texts and emails you receive every day are offering you tens of millions to move to China. Now, more than ever, you have to be careful not to accidentally say yes to one.
Ignore all of the above advice
I’m a Premier League footballer which means no laws apply to me and I can do whatever you want all the time. I don’t have to follow any rules, even if I just made them. So yeah. Hope all that was relatable.

I'm confused by tonight's cancellation, well the reasoning at least.

Arsenal players (not in squad) had contact with the olympiakos owner 13 days ago. At that point, no one knew he had coronavirus.

Said players self isolation ends on friday. How did they start their isolation immediately after contact even though no one knew he was infected?

As I understand it, the point is that symptoms can emerge 14 days after first contact. No Arsenal players currently have symptoms but they could yet emerge. If everyone is fine after the 14 days then things will resume as normal.

It's fourteen days after last, not first potential contact. Hence why people coming back off cruise ship had to do another fourteen days. As this incident was a one-off handshake, then first and last contact are the same. That's why people can't get their heads round it, I'm afraid.

Has anyone run the numbers on using a freehit in 31 vs a double Gameweek?

Figure I’ll have 7 players (4 blanks) in 31. Surely there is going to be a week where we will have more than 4 players with doubles. (Assume template team)

And the nature of the player is important too and the aspect of choice. 31 involves, generally, lower scoring players and less predictable ties beyond Wolves and Liverpool (and every active player will have 3 from both of those, surely)

You also have to factor in that many people not freehitting are using transfers to get players in that they don't want to keep in their teams after GW31. People frehitting in GW31 can focus on getting players with form and fixtures without worrying about them blanking in 31.

Example from reality: I'm planning to use FH in GW31 and I got Auba in this GW...wait...bad example...

What other FPL Acts Of God/freak occurances can folks remember (not really disallowed onside goals, or allowed offside goals) that go alongside Covid19 taking out a DGW less than a week after the DGW itself had been announced

I'm thinking the likes of :

    - Storm Ciara last month rearranging games
    - Kun breaking ribs in a taxi close to a deadline
    - Darren Bent Beachball goal

There must be other similarly bizarro events

Gw38 is the constant , that cannot be messed with.
Everyone must play each other on the same day , same time as scheduled, then it ends. No extra games
So , in an extraordinary situation like this , where teams could be asked to cram in exeptional numbers of postponed games they may well have no other choice than to accommodate them over a reasonable extended period during gw37

It’s a slippery slope argument, you can’t change the rules of a game mid-season. The GW deadlines have been set in stone and have never ever been moved before.

It’s within the rules, they can change the deadlines. Just because they haven’t done it before doesn’t mean they can’t do it in the future or that it’s against the rules especially as it’s specifically stated in the rules that they can.

Having said that I don’t see any reason why they would move rearranged fixtures to GW37 instead of GW38.

If the last games of the season are moved back it would only make sense for 38 to become a double/triple GW. There would be no reason to move the actual GW deadlines

If right is right maybe they should be red flagged and price protected.

Owners have been through enough without having to deal with price drops tbf.
