What Premier League suspension means for FPL managers and FFScout

The Premier League have announced that all matches will be suspended until the weekend of April 4, 2020 in light of growing coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.

That means that there will be no fixtures in Gameweek 30 and Gameweek 31.

That round of action is scheduled to take place after the next international break, although Euro 2020 play-off matches and friendlies are at risk of postponement in light of CONMEBOL already cancelling World Cup qualifiers.

As things stand, no decision has been taken on what the rest of the 2019/20 campaign will look like, or if the season will be declared null and void.

It looks as if the situation will be reviewed again as we approach Gameweek 32 next month while postponed fixtures will be rearranged when possible.

“Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League’s aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so. In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.” – Premier League statement

We will endeavour to bring you a breakdown of the exact impact on FPL as and when we have it.

What does this mean for FFScout?

As a result of the Premier League’s unprecedented, but not unexpected, announcement, we will cease all coverage of the build-up to Gameweek 30 with immediate effect.

We will spend the next few days assessing the situation and working out what content we can produce for the foreseeable future.

In that time, the production of articles, videos and podcasts will temporarily experience a shift in focus until we know more about what the future holds for the Premier League and Fantasy Football.

Over the next few days, we will endeavour to bring you as much news as is relevant to the situation and our focus on FPL strategy will, in line with the gravity of the situation, be stripped back.

We will be temporarily suspending the FFS Cup and Head-to-Head leagues and making a decision further down the line on how best to proceed with the competitions.

What is the latest on coronavirus in football?

The news of the Premier League’s suspension comes in the wake of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta testing positive for COVID-19 in the late hours of Thursday evening.

The Premier League had originally planned to see all Gameweek 30 matches proceed as scheduled but the news coming out of the Emirates Stadium seems to have forced their hand.

Not only has Arteta gone into self-isolation, but the entire Arsenal squad has also done the same, following contact with their manager while he has had COVID-19.

Naturally, this put the Gunners’ trip to Brighton on Saturday at extreme risk, and later on Thursday evening, it was officially postponed by the Seagulls.

Meanwhile, over the last 14 days, Arsenal’s squad and manager have also been in contact with Portsmouth and West Ham in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively.

Since then, Chelsea midfielder Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) has tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into self-isolation, while his team-mates have also entered into the same protocol.

There have also been subsequent updates from Watford, Everton and Bournemouth on Friday morning revealing a number of Premier League players have gone into self-isolation.

The wider football world will now look ahead to Tuesday when UEFA will convene a video conference between the 55 governing bodies it presides over to discuss the future of European football and the fate of the upcoming 2020 European Championships.

Nonsense. Why wouldn't it be completed? Surely completing a season that is over 3/4 of the way through is more important than starting a new season? They will just push the start of next season back if need be.

Well I'd imagine they play more fixtures at the start of the next season in a smaller period of time. It can surely be achieved with some planning. I honestly can't see any scenario where the entire season this year will be abandoned and void, it would cause uproar.

When will the next season start though?
            When will pre season start?
            Will they be more delays?

These are uncharted waters and this season can easily stand null & void.

Impossible to figure anything out until the dust settles but I'm sure it's achievable if sacrifices are made elsewhere i.e. less international friendlies etc. Like I say, the ramifications of voiding an entire season that is nearly finished is surely more important than the beginning of a season that hasn't happened yet

Don't they also need to screw around with the fixtures to fit in the winter world cup

Players are rich enough to go on holiday whenever they want .... so they don't need the summer off
Should start the season in December with the usual mad crush of fixtures

          Eliminate Winter Break next year.

Euro2021 starts slightly later than it would have done.

International friendlies removed, to accomodate a tighter schedule.

I expect a number of strategies could be implemented to ease a late 2019/20 season finish.

If they can’t play it properly then give Pool the title and have a 8 team knockout tournament (2-10 minus city) in preseason for CL qualifying. Then have an 6 team relegation head to head 20 vs 15, 19 vs 16, etc to decide the three that go down. Seems fair on everyone involved based on what the table is now.

It would be hilarious if they nullify it and Liverpool dont win the league after a 30 years wait, as they obviously would've won if it weren't. I do understand Liverpool fans would be fuming, because they do deserve to win it.

am I the only one using my FT before tomorrow's deadline? I'm thinking the game might not be flexible enough for this situation, so it'll still be 1 FT / GW. Using mine this week, and then saving GW31 FT so i have 2FT ahead of when the games MIGHT be resumed. Or is it a downside to it that I might be missing?

I agree they deserve the title, because they're basically won it anyway!

But these kind of decisions can't be done lightly. Whatever they end up deciding will set precedent for future years.

What if the same thing happens sometime in the future but they're only 1 point ahead?

Fingers crossed we just get the season completed, as long as it's safe to do so.

Exactly it’s all about the precedent it sets. Liverpool absolutely deserve the title but a line has to be drawn

The line currently is very black and white - have you mathematically won it? Yes or no?

Awarding Liverpool the title greys the line

They haven't won it though. Obviously they will win it, but they haven't. It makes no difference if you are 3 points ahead or 20, the principle is the same. They can't make one rule for being 20 points ahead and another for, lets say, 10 points ahead. It's like the off side rule, you are either offside or you're not.

Not necessarily start in August. Companies have bought blocks of games. Not blocks of dates. That's why your hotel analogy doesn't work

completely unfair on those that saved. Not enough has essentially changed for it to be necessary. If anything those that saved may have lost the dgw they saved it for we don’t even know yet. I took -4 four times -16 over four weeks to save my wildcard I don’t want two now I kept one for the run in as I believe it was an advantage. Of course I didn’t expect this but that’s the way it goes. I TC’d Mane over Salah in a 50/50 (48 pts or 3 pts) i didn’t want fpl to give me a ‘good will gesture my because an unforeseeable event happens. Of course people who have used want a wildcard again it would be ridiculous if given though.
