Euro 2020 postponed until next year after UEFA talks

This summer’s European Championship has been postponed until 2021, which could help the current Premier League season be eventually completed.

The month-long tournament had been due to get underway on June 12 but has now been put back a year following a meeting involving UEFA, its 55 member associations, the European Club Association, the European Leagues and FIFPro on Tuesday.

The news had been widely expected, with football on the continent having been brought to a halt following the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The announcement first came not from UEFA themselves but the Norwegian FA, who posted the following tweet on Tuesday lunchtime:

UEFA confirmed the news later, issuing the following statement:

CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, swiftly followed suit by announcing that this summer’s Copa America, which was scheduled to run at the same time as Euro 2020, would also be put back until next year.

The postponement of the European Championship and the Copa America raises hopes that domestic club competitions can now be seen through to a delayed conclusion, with the summer now freed up to accommodate the backlog of fixtures.

Indeed, UEFA said in the above statement:

The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, to be completed.

A working group has been set up with the participation of leagues and club representatives to examine calendar solutions that would allow for the completion of the current season.

The spread of COVID-19 and the uncertainty over when the pandemic will peak means that doubts still exist over when any kind of sport will be able to recommence but the lack of international football in June and July does give the Premier League (and its counterparts on the continent) some leeway in order to complete the 2019/20 campaign.

The Premier League are set to hold their next emergency meeting on Thursday, to firm up their own short-term plan of action.

Fantasy Premier League will likely follow suit thereafter.

Currently, top-flight football in England is due to restart on April 4 – though that appears increasingly unlikely given the escalating COVID-19 crisis.

The Gameweek 31 deadline looks set to stay as is, with no fixtures taking place (as happened with Gameweek 30), although it remains to be seen how FPL deal with the Gameweeks to come after the decimated international break, especially if a resumption of play is not possible until the summer.

When and if the Champions League and Europa League will be able to restart is another question, with movement between a number of countries now restricted and the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, announcing today:

UK travellers abroad now face widespread international border restrictions and lockdowns in various countries.

The FCO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] will always consider the safety and the security of British nationals.

So, with immediate effect, I’ve taken the decision to advise British nationals against non-essential travel globally for an initial period of 30 days and of course subject to ongoing review.

We’ve heard nothing official from UEFA yet as to how they plan to proceed with the Champions League and Europa League, although Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the finals of the two competitions have been put back by four weeks.

How many games do you predict to be played between now and the end of the PL season?

I hope they get it all done, even behind closed doors. Why can't they just cancel next season if we're going months ahead? The only fair thing to do is complete the season.

All other options I've seen have some form of unfair element to them. It would be unfair to void the season as so many would be stripped of success and it would be unfair to end it as it is now as mathematically so much is still possible. Finishing the season is the ONLY fair option.

I should say FPL is completely separate though. Although my views are the same I have no faith the FPL website can adapt to the changes. There's a chance they will just cancel this seasons game 🙁 , even if the league got completed later in the season.

There is no fair answer. Even finishing it is unfair in many ways.

Well there's the contract thing. Different teams will be in different situations regarding the contracts of their players.

Even the injury situation. A team like Spurs will benefit because they will all of a sudden have the likes of Kane and Son back. Or the opposite, other teams may lose players to injury or even the coronavirus when otherwise they would have had a fit squad.

I'm not saying it's not the 'fairest' way, just that no way is completely fair.

No point what you are saying, nobody expect Coronavirus, therefore if the PL decide to resume the season later on, injuries and contracts is not excuse to be an unfair situation.
In this case i can also say that is unfair for Spurs paying millions for players like Kane/Son and they not been playing most of the games this season because they got injury.

Every team need to play with their guns.

Cancelling something that’s 3/4 finished is obviously more unfair than delaying the start of something that hasn’t even started yet? Sounds more like you want it cancelled

On a more serious note why risk even playing one as there is little or no chance of playing out the season anyway TM?

If you mean between now and the scheduled end of the season then none, but I expect all outstanding PL fixtures to be played eventually. From August onwards maybe.

If all games get played somehow & FPL sticks with its stubborn approach re deadlines, GW 38 with 9-11 fixtures for teams looks possible right ?

Picking team based on ticker then 😀

It'd be massive OR swinging GW.

It's easiest thing to do i guess. They have kept 2 gw's deadline Same so don't see any real problems why they won't do same with another 7 gw's

I think they should add gameweeks or call off the game. No point having one gameweek with so many games.

I don't know how tough it is for FPL to change the deadlines or add gameweeks but it makes no sense to have all the game stuffed in one gameweek.

Yeah there's a good chance it's something that can't be done easily done. But tbf they only had a few hours to come up the with a solution and this seemed an easy one. If the season was to start on 4th April then their solution could work.

They are not anticipating any changes IMO.
Keeping it tight all the time. Pausing the FPL as soon as decision came out should have been the case.

Maybe. I'm in a lot of cash leagues and I'm not sure that sits well. It completely wipes away the team management aspect from the game which is what the game is about.

Don't think it's fair to keep calling FPL "lazy" - nobody knows when or if the EPL will resume, so there's no point in recoding the website until we all know more. This is an unprecedented and unpredictable situation.

If and when a new schedule is announced, I'd imagine they might well pull out all the stops to add more GW's, or create a series of DGWs.

FPL aren't known for deviating from the rules. They might be crap at being consistent with points scoring etc, but when it comes to how the site works they never deviate no matter what reason.

It's easy for them to do, I could programme it blindfolded. They need to do it that way and I am surprised they didnt pause the game rather then suspend the 2 gameweeks currently.

Wildcard in '37' and BB in '38' then. Though given everyone would have 8 or more transfers before then, pretty much nullifies the wildcard

To be fair I would also presume it's relatively simple to change. But at the same time that would also require there being competent staff over at FPL Towers. That's something I'm less confident about.

I think the fairest thing to do is finish this season even if it means a shortened season next year. If every club knows what they are signing up to at the start of a shortened season it's fair. I know there are problems with the season being finished when contracts are expiring on 30th June but there are going to be problems unless games can be played before then.

As above, I agree. Complete this season. I don’t care if we lose an entire season from the calendar. Just complete this one before starting the next. Players may move clubs in between but I think it’s still the fairer option.

It might be the fairest thing to do, but it won’t happen, Premier league teams, along with every other team, needs seasons worth of fixtures to survive financially. “Fair” won’t even come into it.

That's an option but also cancelling cup competitions to fit in the premier league games is also an option. If we are talking about money the premier league is where it's at.

Same problem. The lower league won’t wear that. The chance of a big draw against a top flight club every now and again in the cup competitions is a major boost to them.

The least damage done and the least complicated way out of this is just to void the season....it is also probably the most agreeable way to the vast majority of clubs. They then hopefully get a full programme of games next season...which they need.

Depends how long this goes on. They say a peak of june or July but you have to think that there would be a process of getting from the peak to a manageable level and this country is taking the longer route to most. Season has to finish for the Euros in 2021 as i can't see them moving it again.

Me personally i think they should play it in June ( unlikely) or cancel the season. I am a bitter spurs fan though, it probably sways me 🙂

I hope they can play it in June too but it would probably be behind closed doors so is not ideal.

There could be a scenario that football can't be played until next November or December anyway so they might have to have a everyone plays each other once season anyway.

The game is driven by money now unfortunately rather than equity/fairness/reason & I think money might end up driving a null & void 19/20 season to ensure a full 20/21 season, with this season’s teams & euro qualifiers etc

I don’t think having both this season & next season (which would be the best outcome) will be physically possible , and when the money men have to choose between the two - the 38 games of 20/21 TV revenue will unfortunately outweigh the 9 games of 19/20 Revenue for the powers that control the PL

Whilst it will be harsh to the likes of Wolves, Sheffield, West Brom, Leeds etc after the seasons they’d been putting together - it ultimately will be less controversial than relegating teams using behind closed doors games, forcing teams to play 19/20 games after players contracts have expired, or even deciding relegations, promotions, Euro qualifiers etc by subjective, non-mathematical means

Everyone over 70 has to self isolate here. Kids are at home also. People will soon need entertainment, since life is going to be dull. Somewhere in Europe government has bought tv-rights for the public. "Bread and circuses" could be needed.

There are only bad ideas, but if players can self isolate themselves and are healthy, they perhaps could play behind closed doors. Ticket income would suffer, but perhaps there could be some kind of agreement made with tv rights owners, since they should get extra income?

Other solutions are probably even worse? Or is there some kind of cultural mentality issue that I as a foreigner can't easily understand?

I know Leo lost the election and the people wanted a change but i am kind of glad he is still at the helm as this crisis unfolds.

His background as a physician is invaluable right now and he also done ok when he was minister of health.
Better leave him there for a while instead of someone that is only learning the job.

Fine Gael have had to deal with implementing austerity after the financial crash, running a minority government and now this. I didn't vote for them this time but in fairness they are a safe pair of hands while others will throw rocks from the sideline and don't want to form a government.

      Evening colonel.

Had a day off today and my boss rang me mid morning to advise that I will be working from home until further notice. Most of my office will now be home working.

Daughter has day off school tomorrow, but my son has to still go.

They need to close the schools here in UK.

won't all the people on lockdown now that don't get the virus just get it at the end of summer when Covid-19 2.0 occurs?

guess you play the end of this season in June-August and then just don't have a 20/21 season once the second wave hits

presumably, the theory in the uk at least is to have enough people to get it and then recover now so future outbreaks aren't to big of a deal

yeah, thought the same - although once borders/tourism open again it could be carnage - European and Asian countries aren't doing the same thing

that why they are working on the vaccine even though they know it's not going to help in the short term.

as far as I'm aware; people need to get it now, over the next few months or during the impending shitstorm later in the year - hopefully they have a better way to isolate vulnerable people come September onwards cause this shite isn't going to fly in peak flu-season

What has the Covid-19 to do with the flu-season? Let me help you here > 0 like nothing. Get yourself updated on official websites from your local government, and please do not refer to the UK prime minister, he's such a waste.

The worst thing that can happen is the coronavirus hitting peak time at the same time as peak flu. Hospitals are already filled with flu patients then as it is.

Well, the peak time should be well over by then, if the government is doing the right decisions now, like in the rest of world, but local hero Johnson doesn't show that urge yet. Don't want to call him a donkey, in respect of the donkey.

To anyone here who like me, runs a small business and is suffering from this, the government has signed off on £330Billion of emergency loans to assist small businesses with staff costs etc during this period.

The emergency cash should be ready for applications next week.

    My thoughts.

I’ll answer Tinkermania’s question re my comment about “agreeable” as it’s own post, because it matters.

This business about when this season is, or is not, finished off....or when the next season does, or does not start again is not a decision that the PL can now make...it is not their gift alone to make....that moment passed a while ago.

The government will have the decision on this even if the PL is the mouth piece. Re-starting any football, by whatever method, will have to be agreeable to them. It will have to be within their time scale and by their rules...which will in turn be informed by how agreeable they judge it to be to the general public....not all of who share our love of football.

Any resumption of the prem will also have to be agreeable to the lower league clubs from the championship down. It’s inconceivable that the prem is allowed to restart whilst the lower leagues are thrown to the wolves....it either all re starts or none do.

It is also inconceivable that the Prem (and lower leagues) re starts whilst other sports don’t...so it has to be agreeable to those other sports...once again they either all restart or none do.

This thing has moved beyond just the PL making a decision of it’s own accord.
