The Fantasy Football Scout World Cup of FPL knockout stages continue this week with two more second-round matches.

After the group stages concluded last week, we saw Frank Lampard take on Gareth Bale and Harry Kane face off against Trent Alexander-Arnold in the opening clashes of the last-sixteen.

Before we jump into the next phase of matches, let’s take a look at the results so far.

Last Sixteen – Match 1

  • Frank Lampard – 75.8%
  • Gareth Bale – 24.2%

Such is the weight behind pre-tournament favourite Frank Lampard, he was able to completely crush Gareth Bale in their last sixteen tie.

That’s despite the former Spurs man offering plenty of joy with his mega hauls in the years leading up to his joining Real Madrid in 2013.

In the end, Lampard’s longevity proved to be the deciding factor, as no Fantasy asset has as many Dream Team appearances as him (seven).

Last Sixteen – Match 2

Harry Kane – 55.1%

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 44.9%

This tie pitted two current FPL players against each other but with out completely backgrounds.

In the end, Kane’s longer presence on the Fantasy scene has won him this tie. Emerging as an incredible £5.0m option in 2014/15 he has been an established part of the premium forward scene for several years, when fit.

Trent Alexander-Arnold ran him relatively close though, even if he is a relative upstart compared to the Spurs man. It’s been an incredible rise for Liverpool’s right-back but perhaps too recent for him to dislodge Kane.

Maybe this tie might go a different way in two or three years…

Current standings

Rooney vs Terry

The third knockout match throws us back several years as Wayne Rooney and John Terry go head-to-head.

This is sure to be a hard-to-call tie with each player offering something very different in their heydays.

Since records began in 2006/07, nobody has scored more FPL points than Rooney (1,835) who has two 200+ seasons and made the Dream Team four times.

He also holds the record for the highest-ever Double Gameweek score, registering 32 points in January 2010.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that Rooney emerged as the winner of Group E securing 40.2% of the vote ahead of Marcos Alonso, Raheem Sterling and Nemanja Vidic.

Meanwhile, John Terry has been in an end-of-season Dream Team on six different occasions, more than any other defender while Lampard is the only player in FPL history to have achieved that feat more times.

It was clean sheets rather than goals that propped up Terry’s appeal, as he kept 25 en route to Chelsea’s first title in 50 years back in 2004/05.

But the centre-back also had an eye for goal, scoring in every Premier League season from 2000/01 to 2016/17.

All of that was why he progressed from Group F with 26% of the vote, behind Luis Suarez and ahead of Clint Dempsey and Gareth McAuley.

De Bruyne vs Salah

Another present-day clash pits Kevin De Bruyne against Mohamed Salah in another hard-to-call tie.

De Bruyne comes into the knockout stages as the winner of Group G, securing 36% of the vote ahead of Leighton Baines, Jamie Vardy and Cesc Fabregas.

The Belgian’s phenomenal assist count, 52 between 2015/16 and 2018/19, means he has two 190+ seasons to his name in the last five years and he could be on course for another one.

Having already equalled his scoring record for a campaign 29 Gameweeks into 2019/20, De Bruyne should break 200 points again, currently standing at 178.

The only man ahead of him in the 2019/20 standings thus far is his second-round opponent Salah.

The Egyptian leads the scores at this suspended stage with a total of 186 and will surely be eyeing up the accolade of top-scorer once again.

Even though Salah has been on the Fantasy radar for a shorter time than De Bruyne, the Liverpool man has top-scored in FPL every year since arriving at Anfield.

In 2017/18 he broke the all-time record with 303, following it up with 259 in 2018/19.

Despite those achievements, he had to bow the knee to Sergio Aguero in Group H, coming through as the runner-up on 41.3% of the vote.

So it will be interesting to see if Salah can get the better of the Argentinian’s team-mate in the knockout rounds…

Taa has outscored Kane for this and last season too !! 😮

(Injuries to Kane yeah, but that's what makes him unfiT o get picked ahead of Taa or earn a transfer to United 😛 )

          Longevity wins it for me.

TAA is on his way to FPL legend status, but for me, one full season isn’t enough to merit him beating out the current England captain who has been consistent for half a decade now.

            Fair enough.

I'm playing this for long too. But only taking effort since last season. So it's fair to say that i have not experienced Kane magic. He's on his way down from last season, Taa is on up.

Recency bias then ... But Taa is a different monster all together. Especially under Klopp who's main creative outlet is Full Backs since Continho left

Yes, the article summed it up for me. In a few years time TAA should rightly romp it.

I had Kane in the good old days when he was dirt cheap, so he did me good.

How does one go about finding an apartment in London? I might be moving there after the whole COVID-19 situation is dealt with and would love some guidance.

Also, is it worth getting an apartment in a cheaper neighbourhood and increase the commute time or not? My office's going to be in Westminster and from what I know it is very expensive to live there

Zone 3 and 4 areas are fine and much cheaper to live in. Underground gets you to Westminster fairly quickly.

You're probably best off checking Purple Bricks to begin with, and take it from there.

Depends on your budget, but probably best to get somewhere further out than central London. Underground is pretty easy and quick, so just check where you are has a good link.

It could actually turn out to be quicker if you don't live in London at all. Especially with HS2.

London inner city travel is a bitch.

I don't think HS2 will be ready for ages unless I've misunderstood. Might be best to check out the cross rail route although that is delayed

You're right. It's not due to open until at least 2028 apprently. I thought it was imminent for some reason.

It's still worth checking long distance routes and times though. I can get to Central London from Birmingham quicker than someone travelling from outer to inner London at peak times.

Is that actually true? How much time would it take you to get to Central London from Birmingham? An estimated figure would be helpful

Probably just under an hour from Birmingham to London Euston.

There is a direct train from Milton Keynes to Euston which is about 35 minutes I think.

That will be pricey. What you save on rent you'll spend on trains, then add the time.

Swings and roundabouts, I’d guess renting a 1 bed flat in MK, or Birmingham would be £500 or so, going to be more like £1,200 in London (if you want your own place).

Aye of course. But it's just another scenario to research along with the others. I'm not saying live in Birmingham. That was just an example. There are plenty of outside London towns much closer.

Ignore this guy, he doesn't know what he is on about. Obviously never lived/worked in London. Giving bad advice just to be involved, should zip it.

A good idea would be to base yourself on the jubilee line (good quality tube line and ideal for Westminster) and take yourself out to zone three kind of way. Somewhere like west ham or canning town is still affordable for rent (north Greenwich maybe, but getting trendified).

Also you should strongly consider a flatshare, will spread costs a lot and also you will meet mates.

                    Good luck, fantastic city. Mind-expanding.

You seriously suggested HS2. Come on, that is just idiocy.

I clearly said I made a mistake on that part...

Obviously the ideal scenario would be to find a cheap property, located on one of the direct or connecting tube lines. And that can be done.

We don't live in an ideal world though. Sometimes you can't find the ideal property, hence looking at all options.

Depending on where in London someone is, it can be much easier to travel in from outside of London. Are you saying that's not true?

And on 'depending on where someone is' in London, we know he's going to be working in Westminster. Right in the middle, though I guess you don't know that as you know nothing about London and have previously banged on about how you 'hate' it.

It's possible he could get somewhere outside London in the south, as they come in to Waterloo and that is on the Jubilee line, but every satellite town south of London is very expensive, as much as London pretty much.

How can someone who is a regular commuter to London from the north think that HS2 is active, or about to be active? You'd have to have your head up your backside. Don't believe you. Or you never read/understand the news.

Working in Westminster would suggest civil servant, and HS2 would be high on the news agenda in that profession, whether or not you were involved in travel infrastructure.

                        Something doesn't add up.

                        Doesn't matter what you believe.

The point is that it's possible for 'some' people outside of London to reach Westminster faster than 'some' people who live in London.

Either it's true or it isn't.

At the end of the day it comes down to lifestyle (Assuming money isn't an issue). I love driving my car, going for bike rides, drinking in country pubs and I'm too old to be arsed to go to a pub where there is a massive queue at the bar. I also have a family. Therefore I live about 25 miles out of London with the countryside on my door step and fast train to Paddington in under 20 minutes. If I was single, working hard and not interested in the outdoors I'd live more centrally for sure

The reason people such as I (many, many of us) rarely post on here (a recent topic of debate) and prefer to observe from a distance is:

                        a) the amount of drivel that is spoken

                        b) the entitled attitude of many 'regulars' who regard themselves as very important and wise, and are above being gainsaid in any way

That's great and I envy you out there in Berkshire somewhere, but assuming money isn't an issue is one hell of an assumption! Especially for a guy moving to London for the first time.

Agreed on living centrally, that would be a hell of a wheeze while young and having fun. Heavily relies on money, though, who can afford a nice little flat in Soho?

You are right it is a massive assumption but then I think it's fair to assume the OP has some idea of London prices so wouldn't even be considering a 1 bed flat in central London unless he can afford at least 1.5k a month (caveat - not checked for years so could be a lot more nowadays?). If money is a problem then living in your own flat in London is very unrealistic.

It sounds like he doesn't know much about it yet, is just doing the first sounding out. If so, will sadly soon find out that anywhere central is for people who either lived there historically or earn a ton of cash. Assuming he's not in that minority he will of course have to cut his cloth accordingly. Even the aspiration of a one-bed flat (not much to ask in most cities) could be something that has to be compromised on.
Not sure what 1.5k would get you centrally, now. Probably not much I guess, given that I'm in zone 2/3 and I pay nearly that (with partner) for a one-bed, albeit a nice one that you wouldn't start out with (unless in a very well-paid job).
                        Great adventure, though.

You're right and I think your suggestions in the east on the jubilee line is probably where the best compromise for money vs commute will be found. I'm just biased because I'm from West London!

Money would obviously be an issue as I am at the beginning of my career and working for a private firm, so looks like central London is out of the question.

But the tickets won't be cheap. Also when there is a problem you have less routes to get home

I'd probably go for somewhere on the same tube line. Maybe Hammersmith?

Parents moved to Bristol, but I just fell in love with the R’s.

I’d be more in danger of following Chelsea from that neck of the woods.

There's only one team to follow in that area. COYW!

Reason I mentioned Hammersmith is I've been parking there for the last 20 years whenever I'm going to the cottage. A river walk with a few pubs along the way. Can't beat it 🙂

I am single and suspect that I'd be spending most of my time at work, so don't really need a fancy apartment. Just a decent but cheap 1bd apartment would do. Would like to save as much as I can on the rent but not compromise on necessities. Couldn't be arsed about modern furniture etc.

For what it's worth, my general advice (as someone in your shoes 20 years ago who has since learned the ropes) I posted further up, but would look on the Jubilee line somewhere a bit further out like West Ham or Canning Town, that sort of way. That will get you in to Westminster no problem and is still fairly inexpensive (comparatively, still London prices).
Also a flat share is well worth considering as costs will come down considerably and you will meet new people who could well become mates.
Make the most of the opportunity if you can, it's a great city if you embrace it and take it as it comes. Good luck.

I appreciate the advice and the wishes Bennerman! Relatively fresh into the career and hope to make the most of this opportunity. Know a couple of people there too, so flat share could well be a possibility and I think the best thing to do to save money.

The Magnificent-7 template looks rock solid so no need to change any of those guys imo

Of the other four (Pope, Egan, Sarr, Auba) it's hard to really find anything fundamental wrong with them - they're pretty much all serious FPL players, even Sarr who I'm not bowled over by

But personally I've gone (Ederson, AWB, Martial, Vardy) for those four slots & in a world that isn't in the middle of a pandemic apocalypse would back them to outscore the other four quite heavily - even with Auba's extra fixture, he really doesn't offer much that the sub 10.0 strikers have been offering all season while he's POO & sharing returns with Lacazette

We possibly need Auba to get his cut-price contract-rundown Man Utd move & become their loan striker/Greenwood's mentor for 2 seasons to really unlock his 30-goals/20-assists a season mode

    Some VAR stats:

    88 overturns
    22 leading to goals
    46 leading to disallowed goals
16 penalties awarded (half is which were missed)
    4 penalties overturned
    4 penalties retaken
    6 red cards
    3 overturned red cards

    28 goals disallowed for offsides
8 goals awarded for incorrect offsides
    10 goals disallowed for handballs
2 goals awarded after incorrect handballs

If you’re wondering why some of the numbers don’t add up it’s because multiple things can happen in one VAR check. For instance, a penalty can be awarded and a red card given

    McCarthy
    TAA Saiss Lascelles (Taylor Ngakia)
    KDB Salah B.Fernandes Martial Alli
    Auba Jimenez (Greenwood)

    2FTs

    B. Alli => Barnes and upgrade keepers
    C. Keep Alli (was in good form before the pause) who was bought for 8.6 and dropped to 8.3

So I made one transfer after the postponement and the announcement that GW deadlines would remain in place, have been burning them ever since.

With WC in hand and the massive unknowns there really is no point making more is there?

Could turn Button into a playing keeper with BB in mind but again, that can be sorted out with WC.

So, look to make moves or just concentrate on vFPL?
