Premier League confirm June 17 as return date following suspension

The Premier League have confirmed that the competition will “provisionally” return on Wednesday, June 17.

The first two fixtures to take place will be the outstanding games in hand as of the coronavirus suspension back in March.

To be played on the evening of June 17 are:

  • Aston Villa v Sheffield United
  • Manchester City v Arsenal

The news was reported by the Telegraph and BBC following a key Premier League meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

However, this information now carries the full ratification of the top-flight as well.

“Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday 17 June. But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority. Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches. The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home. We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019/20 season.” – Premier League statement

The weekend of June 19/20/21 is set to be the first full programme of football, with matches on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

As things stand, we do not know which matches will be played on that weekend, or indeed when the next FPL deadline will be.

Crucially, we do not know if the midweek fixtures on June 17 will comprise a very small Blank Gameweek or form part of a Double with the following weekend’s matches.

However, we now have more confirmation about the time slots used for matches.

Weekend matches will be scheduled as follows (all times BST):

Friday 20:00
Saturday 12:30, 15:00, 17:30 and 20:00
Sunday 12:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00
Monday 20:00

Midweek matches will be scheduled as follows (all times BST):
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 18:00 and 20:00

Wow virtual FPL remarkably realistic. In real FPL, Pulisic was on fire banging in so many goals. I then got him and he proceeded to get blank after blank after blank. Exactly the same has happened in virtual FPL! Lol

Vardy scores on the losing side, 5 attacks, 3 bonus.
Auba scores on the winning side, 8 attacks, no bonus.
    You love to see it.

If he had the CS points (and potential bonus) that would have worked out about evens.

Wasn't a -bad- transfer but still worse off for it 😆

Game was suspended, pending on what the PL were doing. Obviously now the PL is starting up, will take the FPL awhile to restart and rewrite the game.

My last significant move either way was GW16. There’s a fairly broad template but with everyone returning so consistently it’s really hard to make any move.

Loving the game and huge HT to Ragabolly but I sense the lack of DGWs BGWs and static prices are telling

I’m thinking of WC when Salah is back on Sunday, but GW29 looks ideal to WC.

Auba can become Kane, Mane to Salah and I can get Doherty for the rest of the season.

Right, so we get the games in hand out of the way first, either as a blank GW or as a DGW... But then assuming there'll be no DGWs henceforth? Or will the FA Cup / Champions League cause additional DGWs? If there aren't gonna be DGWs using Free Hit in the first week back seems a no-brainer...

There will be midweeks available for FA Cup so I'd say a no on that front probably.

Champions League is August, so a no for that as well.

Guessing, therefore, that there will be no more blanks or doubles after the first gameweek back so FH might be smart. Could also be a drab and low scoring return to football with teams still lacking some fitness, which might make a FH (or BB) in the last gameweek of the season smarter.

    2. Fred54
      • 9 Years

No one knows regarding opening GW, but from a gaming POV a DGW would be a tidier start to proceedings, than a strange BGW. But yes, after that no more DGWs, expect midweek fixtures though as self contained GWs.

FA Cup seems to been mentioned very little, maybe get finished at a later date. UEFA have already said thinking of August to finish UCL/Europa.

Yeah, thinking more about it, FPL will want to incentivize everyone to get back in the game after the time off, and a "sucks to be you without any players" mini-gameweek isn't going to do that. So I suspect it'll almost certainly be a DGW.

There won't be another DGW opportunity and it'd be a waste of a wildcard if you have to take a load of hits for the next GW. Could be sound to go with your team as is and take a hit or two, save FH for later.

I don't agree with this. FH is perfect for the first week, load up on double players, no need for transfers to get them out after.

Depends on whether FPL give everyone a Covid19 Wildcard or not

*If* they give out Wildcards, then it complicates FH for a DGW39 - in that you cant really wildcard AND Free Hit for the same GW

I understand you feel there is no reason that they should

But none of us can definitively speak for FPL unfortunately - they may feel Covid19 & the unprecedented disruption warrants a wildcard, they may feel free wildcards would dramatically bump up traffic on the site (£), or they may not

They may not even restart the game - so no guarantees at this stage unfortunately

Agree with you now. Especially the last point. As for wildcard, sounds like clutching at straws.

The only previous occasion where FPL gave out a free Wildcard was for the site crashing the morning of a deadline

So it'll just depend on how they feel about the current circumstances - the site crash was their "fault" whereas Covid19 could be considered more towards the "Act Of God" end of the scale

But the disruption certainly has been unprecedented, and unprecedented events may lead to unprecedented measures - or they may not - all speculation 🙂

To the OP's point though *If* they give out Wildcards, then it complicates FH for a DGW39 - in that you cant really wildcard AND Free Hit for the same GW

I am aware of that wild card and it was early in the season. If they give another, I won't use it. Saying that because I am confident there is no good reason for them this time and the season is probably over too, fplwise.

Yep, your guess could be correct, on both counts - my personal guess (maybe its more of a hope) is that they will restart the game, less sure on the wildcard aspect but i could definitely see reasons for them going the wildcard route & vice-versa

Whether they will or not is anyone's guess though - oh to be a fly on the wall of FPL Towers at the minute! 😉

Been nice chatting. Got work now. Just don't plan on extra wildcard or you will deservedly be disappointed. Later.

                        Always a pleasure 🙂

Still impossible for us to speak definitively on behalf of FPL at this stage unfortunately...

So just don't fall into the trap of thinking there are any guarantees (yet) on restart/cancellation/wildcards & other interesting areas 😉

Agreed. Less hassle coming towards deadline with lineups not known or potential price changes when you freehit. But an Aguero or Aubameyang TC could also be lucrative. More than one way to skin a cat as they say 😉

I'd be looking at something like:

      Ederson
      TAA, Doherty, AWB
      KDB, Son, Bruno, Richarlison
      Rashford, Vardy, Jimmy
      (McCarthy, Lundy, Taylor, Hayden)

Not a million miles away from it at the minute - have (Salah, Martial, DCL, Saiss) instead of (Son, Richarlison, Rashford, Doherty)

You gotta ask, is this the real life or is this just fantasy? Me personally? I'm caught in a land slide no escaping from reality.

The most attacking team in the league plays the team that has conceded the most attacks in the league. At home.

    Triple captain .... ACTIVATED.

Have they conceded the most goals?

Does home advantage even apply in empty stadiums?

It's still there but greatly diminished, imo.

I'd bet on none. Bundesliga has had only 5 home wins so far out of 27 matches played.

What would your FH team look like if the first gameweek is a double?
Surprised not to see any RMFHT’s. Here is mine.

    Reina/Heaton(3.9)
    Laporte Luiz Baldock Stevens (Targett)
    Salah KDB Pepe Grealish (4.3)
    Auba Aguero (Mousset)

Looks pretty good to me. Except I'd avoid Villa defence and try to get Hendo in goal for triple SHU defence. Maybe downgrade Luiz if you need additional cash to do that.

        Thank you for your answer.
I could downgrade Luiz but it would be for another Arsenal defender, preferably. Which one?

Could downgrade bench to get Hendo instead but that would leave me with a 4.3m mid and two fodders.

Not sure, I'm not an expert on Arsenal. I can't tell that anyone else is really nailed.

Or maybe the best option is Leno in goal to have Arsenal defence, and then Lundstram in place of Luiz.

Whats the story with contracts now? Will some players be leaving and more coming in a few weeks after the restart?

Probably extended until end of season for most. Plenty of time to get more info.

Players and clubs have to mutually agree to extend until season ends, otherwise player becomes free agent

That would have a big bearing on who we sign then. The likes of pogba or others who are looking to move might be worth staying clear of. Those out of contract won't want to be risking injury either. A lot of factors based on contract situation will cover into

Pogba is different, hes still under contract, be may leave after the season is over, but I'd say zero chance of him leaving before its ended.

Pogba is just an example of someone who might be high on another teams wanted list and someone who looked like he was agitating for a move, input any other player who could be a potential mover, aubameyang, Salah, kane, kdb, sane etc etc

As a side note I think Pogba will def stay next season, one big reason is that teams won't be able to afford him now for a while at least.

Wohoo the return of football...won't be the same with no fans but I've missed it so much!
Back from my hiatus and checked in on my team...double Arsenal & double City attack as well as Fleck & Egan from SHU. Surprisingly well set up for the first GW of the return 🙂

p.s. I hope that all of you, and your families, are keeping well...it has been a tough 2020!
