634x258 Scouting The Doubles

With games against Blackburn at home and Bolton away, Tottenham have two of the best fixtures of the eight double Gameweek sides. A few weeks back, Fantasy managers would have been desperate to shoehorn three Spurs players into their squads but form has proved a cruel mistress in recent weeks. Surely, you’d think, this double Gameweek affords Harry Redknapp’s side a chance to turn around their dwindling fortunes?

The Prospects

Two wins in the last ten games tells a terrible story for the North London outfit. During this appalling run they have been beaten five times, including defeats at QPR and at home to Norwich, as well as conceding 14 goals. Similar to QPR, both Blackburn and Bolton are also fighting relegation, indicating Spurs may be in for a scrap, but a look at both sides’ defensive displays offers plenty optimism for Redknapp’s troops as they look to get their Champions League bid back on track.

Blackburn have kept just three clean sheets this campaign and shipped 73 goals – 41 of those have come on the road, the worst away record of any side in the league. Steve Kean’s side have recorded a single clean sheet away all season and have shipped two or more goals in four of the last five on their travels, strongly suggesting that goals could be on the agenda for the home side next Sunday at the Lane. In terms of goals scored, Rovers have failed to notch in three of their last five on the road, scoring just three times – two of those came at Molineux against relegated Wolves. Fantasy owners have every reason to be hopeful of a home clean sheet here.

Bolton have been similarly poor for defensive returns – Owen Coyle’s have also kept just three clean sheets this season, with a total of 66 goals conceded. The Trotters have returned a single clean sheet since Gameweek 11 and have shipped two or more goals in seven of the last ten Gameweeks. Having found the net in three of their last four at the Reebok, however, defensive returns for the visitors may not be quite so straightforward next Wednesday.

The Likely Lads

Reports earlier this week of a dressing room bust up between on-loan striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Spurs manager Harry Redknapp have yet to be confirmed by either camp, given the gossip little foundation at present. More concrete was today’s news that the Togo international is expected to overcome the hamstring problem that forced him out of last weekend’s trip to QPR. Should Adebayor – who is the fourth best striker in terms of total points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – take to the pitch, he has the potential for a huge haul. Already he has 13 goals, 12 assists, 24 bonus points and five double digit weekly points totals to his name. If, however, Adebayor fails to make it for this Gameweek, given that Louis Saha is also a doubt with a groin problem, Jermaine Defoe may find himself as the only forward available to Redknapp.

The stock of Spurs’ forward thinking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart would also rise considerably if Adebayor is out of the picture, as he is certain to be handed spot kick duties. Among the Spurs midfield, Van Der Vaart has also shown the most promise in recent weeks, giving the 9.5m priced Dutchman strong potential to add to his nine goals, five assists, 23 bonus points and six double digit points hauls.

With 36.9% ownership, there are plenty of managers hoping Gareth Bale can replicate his form of earlier in the season – only Wayne Rooney has more owners than the 9.2 priced Welshman. With 176 points, he has the second best points tally for a midfielder in the FPL game, having returned 10 goals, 11 assists and 21 bonus points. Despite some eye catching runs from midfield into opponents’ penalty boxes in recent matches, his form is nothing short of terrible, averaging just three points a game in the last 10 Gameweeks. Aaron Lennon also has the potential to produce in the midfield but, with game time far from guaranteed, it’d be more than just a punt to consider snapping him up.

Patched up is a fair description of the Spurs defence. Ledley King is unlikely to play twice during Gameweek 36 due to his ongoing knee problem, Michael Dawson is out for the season, though Younes Kaboul could be set to return from a knee problem, despite being ruled out by Redknapp earlier in the week. It leaves William Gallas as the only centre-half likely to feature twice – the former Arsenal man has started three of the last four and, at just 4.6, offers a cut-price route into the back-four. His prospects would certainly be boosted if Kaboul does, indeed, overcome his knee injury.

With Benoit Assou-Ekotto a major doubt due to a shoulder problem, we’re overlooking the left-back’s obvious potential. Instead, we’re looking at Kyle Walker. The 6.1 priced right-back has returned 121 points so far, providing with one goal, one assist and five bonus points to date. Brad Friedel also offers potential – the 5.7 priced veteran has returned 134 points and accrued 110 saves this term and has played every minute of his side’s campaign.

Cheeky Punts

So often the man who assists the assist, Luka Modric tends to miss out on the points hauls his team mates have enjoyed during the season. Nevertheless his three goals, six assists and 11 bonus points cannot be dismissed. Priced at 7.9, he has started all but two games and has achieved double digit gameweeks on two occasions.

      Yes IMO. We might be in poor form but 2 great chances to bash in a few goals. Larsson to Bale for instance would be a great move.

      None of Bale/VDV/Ade is risky, I'd be considering Aguero -> Adebayor.

        And depending on how much cash in the bank that would leave you with, Valencia/Larsson -> Bale/VDV could pay off handsomely.

    take -8 to:

    A) valencia + sessegnon ----> dempsey + pienaar
    (next GW would be cisse + BAE ----> rooney + any defender(-4))

    B) sessegnon + BAE ----> pienaar + possibly terry?
    (next GW would be cisse for rooney(no hit))

    C) only -4 hit for sess ---> pienaar

      I'm debating doubling up on Bale & VDV at the mo myself.. I don't think Mata will get the game time but they're on better form than Spurs (as are most teams). I'm leaning towards VDV due to the fixtures.

        Other then him possibly taking pens, how does Ade playing affect VDV? If anything it increases his chance for points, the two of them link up well.

          Penalties is they key point for me. Hasn't VDV been playing wider of late as well? Perhaps he will become more of a CF if Ade is out. I think it was referred to in the article.

            Na if Ade play VdV will play off of him, if Defoe plays VdV drops to the mid.

              So because Lennon hasn't been playing, do they play anyone in the right of midfield? or are they not bothering with wingers at the moment.

                Assuming the mid is the same (Bale, Parker, Modric, Lennon) but if Ade plays VdV plays off the target man, if Defoe plays VdV drops much deeper and plays the playmaker role alongside Modric.

                Plus you never know with Ade apparently having a bust-up and VdV brownosing Spurs he may even be back on pens.

    60 pt lead in mini league.

    Team: Mignolet - Simpson Caulker Vermelen - Dempsey Siggy Valencia Ben Arfa - RVP Rooney Cisse
    Bench: Vorm Richards Evans Moses

    Tfers Im thinking: Richards to Walker, Valencia to VDV and Rooney to Ade (if positive news tomorrow) Jelavic if not

    Gives me Mignolet - Simpson Walker Caulker - Demspsey Siggy VDV Ben Arfa - Ade RVP Cisse
    Vorm Vermelen Evans Moses on bench

    Sounds good? Leave out Ade and keep Rooney? Play Vorm and double on swans def or perhaps play Vorm and start Vermelen? Rival wild carding and I'm a bit nervous.

    Appreciate any advice guys.

      60 pt lead at this stage means you need not be so worried. Really good transfers apart from Richards to Walker, I don't fancy taking a hit for a Spurs defender.

            Hes gave some game time to De Silva, Pedroza, Parsons & Sekajja also glad Williams is back for next season, i wanna see Innis but think our defence is strong when Gardner is fit.

            really wanted that wembley appearence 😀

              Gardner is solid and Williams sounds the most promising of the youngsters. Yeah you deserved more for your lot's superhuman effort throughout the competition than to bow out on penalties. Your record in the league for the last few months has been so poor though!

                Losing Gardner didnt help, including Jedinak, he really came good after playing alot for us in the centre mid...but then got injured along with Gardner and since then its gone downhill, before then we had the 3rd best defence in the league and even went on 10 games unbeaten

                I hope we keep Gardner and sign a few more players (striker please) and i'd settle for mid-table again with possible play-offs, will be a tough season though, we've been linked with Norris from Pompey so far

    rephrased this time...
    so take -8 to:

    A) valencia + sessegnon —-> dempsey + pienaar
    (next GW would be cisse + BAE —-> rooney + 5.3 defender(-4))

    B) sessegnon + BAE —-> pienaar + defender for 6.8
    (next GW would be cisse for rooney(no hit))

    C) only -4 hit for sess —> pienaar

    Who do we think will score more VDV or RVP?

    Considering Valencia -> VDV and dropping RVP to bench - madness?

    Rest of team:
    Krul (Mig)
    Simpson, Hibbert, Caulker (Evans) (Lescott)
    Bale, Demps, Siggy, Pienaar (Valencia)
    Cisse, Jelavic, RVP

            I know its always a risk but united don't have to win the game so logic suggests they won't be on the all-out attack. It's up to city to attack and in these big games I can just see rooney coming deeper and deeper as united try to grind out results

      That could very well happen. I worry that Cisse may have a stint on the left giving Ba a turn to lead the line. This happened for 60mins of the last game. Ade may have a point to prove as well.

        Looks lovely though!

        Cech, Bogdan nailed on for gks
        but I guess Everton's last two fixtures aren't quite good enough to justify sticking Hibbert on the bench. So probably settle for just 12

    Seeing as we nicely into the deadzone I wondered what people think the best tactics for chasing a lead in a mini-league are? I'm going to give a hypothetical generic team with a 30pt lead at this point and see what you would advise doing to beat it.
    Vorm Krul
    BAE Caulker Turner Evans Vermaelen
    Bale Dempsey Valencia McClean Sigurdsson
    RVP Rooney Cisse

      Well i'm chasing a 30 point lead & i'm going VDV (c), Jelavic & Jagielka who aren't there..

        So a slightly risky DGWER plus two less risky.
        I think that is a good tactic.

      To beat it I would do something a little crazy with the captaincy shout. Putting the armband on Dempsey or Bale could prove valuable as I imagine in your case the safe bet would be to captain Cisse. I would also stock up on attacking DGWers because you only have 3. This is a huge window of opportunity. I am chasing and I will look to have 5 or 6 attacking DGWers.

      I did Ben Arfa for Valencia last week and can no longer get Cisse so I have Adebayor. Jelavic is another to consider. The only problem is that I would like Cisse, I just can't seem to get him in.

      Other areas for improvement are that Swansea and Newcastle don't have great GWs 37 and 38 so one of those keepers will have to play (I'm in this situation too). A couple of DGW defenders would improve that team too, going for a goalscoring defender as a risk might pay off.

      1) Back the teams not covered by that. City and Everton players for example (though City not this week). Chelsea coverage could also be an option

      2) Go for the flair alternatives such as VDV, Nani, HBA

    Is it just me or have not many teams included Newcastle defenders? I have played Krul and Simpson a lot recently given how good defensively they've been, and I'm doubling up again this week due to their DGW. Surely others are playing at least one?

      Yep I can see one against Wigan, 0-1/0-2 Newcastle with it finishing 1-1 at the bridge..

      I don't own mind. I have missed all of the Newcastle haul 🙁

        I've had Simpson virtually since the start and Krul rotated well with Vorm. Doubled up a few weeks and paid off. They've been great defensively in parts this season, rotation and injury has made all but Simpson and Krul risky picks though.

      Fixtures not great. if you have then keep but i dont think any newcastle player is a buy at the moment, given the alternatives

        Not a buy, no. But my opinion is that if you have a defendder/Krul in your squad this week, you'd 100% play them. Plus I thought practically every FPL player would have at least one. Just not seen them in teams this week!

          Not me although have had 1 or 2 most of the season. Sold them a few weeks ago and regretted it, not realising how well they would continue to do.

        Yeah, last week I had to decide on Rooney -> Cisse or Valencia -> Ben Arfa. Did the latter which was slightly better last week. Had two Newcastle defenders for ages and it's easier to bench one of them than it is an attacking player.

        Didn't want to lose Adebayor, RVP or Rooney. Not having Cisse may backfire but Ben Arfa in a midfield of 5 is better than Cisse with only 3 spots available.

        I agree. Not worth buying now but most people have a Newcastle back five player, so expected to see more of them in teams this week. Not doubling up isn't even an option for me.
