Patience with Vardy wearing thin as Leicester attack continues to struggle

Leicester 0-0 Brighton

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Penalties saved: Kasper Schmeichel (£5.4m)
  • Penalties missed: Neal Maupay (£5.7m)
  • Bonus Points: Schmeichel x3, Ben Chilwell x2 (£5.5m), Çaglar Söyüncü x2 (£4.9m)

There was a missed penalty. The end.

That’s how the match report for this Tuesday evening encounter should have gone but, luckily for you, we are committed to at least trying to find a lesson for Fantasy managers to learn as they start preparing for Gameweek 32.

Owners of Jamie Vardy (£9.7m), still 29.7% of managers worldwide, will be the most frustrated as his troubles in front of goal dragged on.

The centre-forward’s latest blank is his eighth from a possible 10 since Gameweek 19, registering just three attacking returns in that time.

There was even some captaincy interest in Vardy for Gameweek 31+ but his virtually anonymous displays against Watford and Brighton will have his owners already worried about the next two matches.

Everton host Leicester in Gameweek 32+ having kept three clean sheets from six at Goodison Park under Carlo Ancelotti, only conceding more than once against Newcastle in Gameweek 24.

After that, Vardy will face a Crystal Palace defence that did not give up a single goal between Gameweeks 27 and 30+.

Particularly concerning for Vardy is the fact that he has not been all that unfortunate to blank in each of his Project Restart matches.

In the first 27 minutes of Tuesday’s meeting with Brighton, the forward touched the ball just once with his colleagues unable to get him on the ball up against the visitors’ defence.

With two matches of Project Restart chalked off already, it is easy to see the problem for Vardy is not just his own but with the entire Leicester team, which looked especially sluggish against Brighton. It will be particularly alarming for Brendan Rodgers that on both Saturday and Tuesday, his side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, did very little with it, and gave up the bigger and better chances to their opponents. Perhaps that should not come as a massive surprise given the Foxes pre-lockdown form. Between Gameweeks 24 and 29, only Sheffield United, Norwich and Aston Villa registered few big chances than Leicester.

Largely out of necessity, Rodgers shuffled his pack following the draw at Watford. He benched Harvey Barnes (£6.2m), much to the chagrin of his 3.9% ownership, replacing him on the left-flank of attacking midfield with Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m).

Demarai Gray (£5.0m) came in for Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) and, like Iheanacho on the other side, offered very little in the way of creativity. Even when Barnes and Pérez came on in the second half, they could not find a way to trouble Brighton’s defence.

“(The short turnaround) was one of the reasons (we rotated). It was Saturday/Tuesday for players just coming back. We wanted extra support in midfield with Papy Mendy, who has good legs. Dimi was very good at the weekend, and we wanted to put a striker in too. The two systems cancelled each other out, without scoring.” – Brendan Rodgers

James Maddison (£7.5m) also put in another disappointing performance, wasting his direct free-kicks and blazing over any efforts from open play too. He had one of Leicester’s best chances in the second half, receiving the ball on the edge of the box from a Vardy knock-down, only to fire it high and wide. It is particularly telling that, for all his set-piece duties, Maddison has not provided an assist since Gameweek 16.

In arguably one of the dullest games of the season so far, there was a silver lining for the neutrals in the display of Tariq Lamptey (£4.0m).

Coming in at right-back for Brighton, the budget defender should be handed credit for his role in ensuring Leicester struggled on Tuesday night, especially considering it was touch-and-go over whether he would need substituting in the first half because of a cut to the face.

A particular highlight for the youngster was when Vardy tried to burn him for pace out-wide, pushing the ball past the defender, only for Lamptey to match the forward and dispossess him easily.

“I think you could see (Lamptey’s) attributes. He has got great speed. I thought he competed well, showed great courage because he took a heavy smash to the face and needed stitches. He had a big hole on the side of his face. But he played against some good players out there and I thought he was magnificent.” – Graham Potter

This result did, admittedly, make for one or two happy souls in the FPL community, notably those invested in the Leicester defence. Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.4m) are still owned by 15.6% and 13.5% respectively, both keeping a clean sheet and the latter saving a Neal Maupay (£5.7m) penalty.

“(Schmeichel) is invaluable. He’s one of the best in the league. He studies the players’ penalties. He’s been very good in the two games back.” – Brendan Rodgers

“A clean sheet, fitness was good and subs tried to make an impact and we didn’t concede so we’ll take a point. We haven’t won the games, but we’ve showed a good mentality to not concede so much and hopefully, after more training, we can find the goals to get back to winning.” – Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Söyüncü, Evans, Justin; Mendy (Tielemans 69′), Ndidi; Iheanacho (H Barnes 69′), Maddison, D Gray (Pérez 73′); Vardy.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-4-2): Ryan; Burn, Webster (Duffy 24′), Dunk, Lamptey; Mac Allister (March 58′), D Stephens, Bissouma (Bissouma 58′), Mooy; Connolly (Murray 82′), Maupay (Trossard 57′).

    What’s Tammy’s chances of starting v city ?

    Giroud pretty much nailed now?

I think Tammy suits the City game more than Giroud, and rotation will have to happen at some point.

Wouldn't say Giroud is nailed but he was first choice before the break and appears to still be now, but for this game, I think Tammy gets the nod.

      Pure guesswork.

Frank apparently likes to rotate himself quite a bit too. Who knows, maybe he wants tammy's pace vs city. Giroud has done well since coming in for Tammy, so in 'normal' games you'd expect Giroud to keep his place

The opposite, Frank is a man of "the best players play". Problem is the best starting XI isn't yet settled

Thoughts on Jesus as a FPL pick if Kun is out for the season?

Nailed on no-brainer or protected for Europe?

Pep has played Sterling and KDB as false 9s before, right? He'll find a way to rotate.

The only player nailed on for City is Ederson.

I wouldnt buy him. Sterling could be deployed down the centre.

No one except Ederson, not even KdB turnes out, is nailed under Pep. He hasn't got going yet so i'd at least wait till after the pool match. Think sterling might play false 9 a bit. Kün might be back for CL. Without Aguero i rate Mahrez a bit more, since when KdB is substituted he might take penalties and he'll probably plays a bit more with 1 less attacker available and Sané on the way out.

Good pick. I'd take 5 starts out of 7 games to be honest.

Not exactly nailed but a massively more enticing prospect than before. He will be rested a bit here and there but he will start most games I think. The other options aren't ideal. Sterling has never convinced up front, he wastes so many big chances that I don't think a striker role suits him.

I'd wait until GW33 before considering him though.

I'm a Man City season ticket holder, if that gives any credence to my opinion I don't know!

I'd agree with this. Kun being out means Jesus will play more, I think - and with the extra subs he'll probably feature in a lot of the remaining games. That City attack is still the most potent out there and the fixtures from 33 onwards are really good. I think Jesus is a decent pick for that run.

    Thoughts on this WC team:

    Pope-Martinez
    TAA-Doherty-Lascelles-Taylor-Robinson
    Kdb-Martial-Fernandes-Mount-Saka
    Auba-Rashford-Jimenez

0.5 itb. Had to hit the WC button before price drops and rises. Auba is in their for the Norwich match only tbh.

I think tonight is tipping point time for utd

Lots of positive signs forward looking in the tea leaves for them, and similarly, lots of negative signs backward looking

If they read the script and do aPogba/Bruno-inspired thrashing of a Henderson/Egan/O'Connell-less SHU then 3 reps will very quickly veer towards mandatory rather than questionable in the opinion polls

I'm also on those three, I feel for the price Martial has more upside than Rashford. Plus I got bored of seeing every WC with DCL Jimi Rash so trying something different whilst retaining two Man Utd attacking assets.

Vardy I think is struggling because this slow, laboured build up in these non-atmospheric conditions are the last thing he needs for his 'on the shoulder' game. To be honest most teams bar City look more of a threat on the counter than trying to break through a tight defence.

Pereira definitely a huge miss - but Vardy is Vardy - he's always relied on what looks like massive overproduction from a relatively threadbare statistical cupboard

He is 33 now too though, eventually father time catches up with everyone, but the guy is hat lethal he'll just pop up with a brace he has no earthly right to score from seemingly nowhere in any game

This could be massively overthinking but isn't Vardy also someone that uses the hatred from opposition fans as a huge motivation tool?

Thoughts on Pulisic? Under 7mil and almost on the same points per match as Richarlison. To be fair to Pulisic, been injured and has not played week in and out.

Maybe the goal he scored will give him some much needed confidence, worth a shout?

Pretty much any of the Chelsea players could be benched. Pedro and Willian signed a contract extension yesterday. So out wide any of Pulisic, Willian, Pedro, CHO, RLC, Mount, Barkley are options. I'm a Chelsea supporter and haven't got a clue of the starting XI.

For example RLC started on the left wing against Villa. He hasn't played a game for something like 13 months. Having said that, he was completely off the pace and Pulisic came on and made an impact. Lampard tends to reward players who perform so I'd guess Pulisic starts against City. After that though who knows.

Mount and Azpi seem to be the safe bets but even then it's not certain.

Definitely worth a shout. Sub 8.5m it's a bit slim.

Richarlison, Pulisic, ASM, Bergwijn, Alli, that's about it. ASM looks a really nice option. cheap, big differential, nailed on with 3 plum fixtures.

    The case against Jesus:

    1. Terrible Fixtures: LIV, sou, and NEW over the next three game weeks.
    2. Rotation: Direct competition from Sterling and ???. Pep rotates and no other manager will rotate their squad with a compressed schedule.
    3. Stats: Only the fourth highest xGI on the MCI squad for the season. An appalling 98.6 mins/xGI and 41.7 mins/shot on target all season.
    4. Price point: Too much. Poor points per million.
    5. Nothing to play for. Bonuses for goals scored are not tied into contracts and Jesus is not eager to capitalize on the opportunity to be the number one striker at MCI.
    6. Pens: Big concern. Is he on them? Only the seventh highest xG on-target, non-penalty all season.

It is conclusive that you should steer clear of Jesus while Aguero is injured. What do you think?

Why you would opt for Jesus who can still be rotated and is quite expensive per return is beyond me. Mahrez is the go to guy now - I expect sterling to start false nine sometimes only benefiting Mahrez game time

I feel like your analysis is very biased... 7th highest xG on target with limited minutes isn't actually bad when you take into account limited minutes. In fact he is 1st in the whole league in terms of non penalty xG per 90 with 0.88 NPxG90. He has just been bit wasteful/unlucky this season.

Also the 4th highest xGI in Man City isn't bad at all given that he was probably behind Sterling, KDB and Aguero and all of them are significantly more expensive in FPL than Jesus.

Maybe. Question is will he get more than 60 minutes after all that time out on a hot night? Palace are no mugs and I think we will be in for the usual attack v defense drill of a game again, will be hard to inject pace. 2-0 would be my prediction with a late second.

So you'll settle for 2 points from Almiron? He is known for not having end-product in the PL. Besides that ASM is way more exciting to watch, flashes past defenders instead of to the ground. That said if you have the funds i think so far Sarr has looked best.

Any thoughts on the best replacement for Barnes? Sarr or Mount seem like the obvious ones, but any others?

Armstrong, Foden have produced so far. I'm on Sarr myself as a 5th midfielder (Bergwijn, Bruno, KdB and Salah)

Thinking Foden will replace Saka as my 5th mid. Barnes replacement will have to play most weeks so he's a bit risky for that. Armstrong is an interesting shout, thanks.

In my opinion Sarr is by far the best choice

Yeah, that's where I'm at currently but mulling it over.

Best captain for GW33? With yet again no stand out option, it looks like there is an oppourtunity for advantage with captain choices most likely spread out to many players. If Man United wins comfortably against Sheffield today I guess most of managers will go for either Fernandes or Rashford in their game v Brighton as captain. In my opinion Aubameyang vs Norwich would be the best choice, but I won't get him in for just one game... Does anyone plan to FH maybe?

You mean 32+? Cup quarters make it tricky, maybe Jim or Doc in the 1st one @avl, should get an idea of team news.

          Do you mean 32?

33 is easy. Pool play AVL. It's gotta be Mane or Salah.

Will they even start if they win the league against City?

Why not? There's nothing else to play for except the 100 point record.

Richarlison, DCL or a City player like KDB. From what I have seen so far, City could beat Liverpool in that game.

        Contemplating a GW33 WC.

        How does this look:

        Patricio Martinez
        TAA Saiss Lascelles Holgate Robinson
        Salah Mane KdB Mahrez Fernandes
        Jimenez DCL Connolly

strong midfield and gives you plenty of downgrade options.
I will likely wc in 33 too but have a stronger defence

Laying out so much funds on liverpool when they might be champions already is risky, but i could pay of. I rather spend more in defense, for example Ritchie and Doherty will get more points than Saiss and Lascelles. Like Connolly for the bench, and Patricio as keeper. 8.5/10

They have nothing else to play for. Don't see why they wouldn't just go hard and try to set a new record points tally. And who's better anyway? I have KdB and Fernandes who are pretty obvious. Son maybe?

There is always next season and they might want to avoid injuries tokey players and give game time and medals to as many players as possible. I am uncertain if records broken under these circumstances are worth the trouble. Klopp wasn't risking Robbo or Salah for example and Pep rotated the whole team.

          I like it!

With the Salah Mane double up you miss out on players like Doherty and Alonso but I think it's worth it given the great value alternatives like Saiss.

Is there 100% not another DGW then? I was gonna save the WC for then...

I don't know honestly. Although now that I look at it, I don't need to WC to get that. I can easily take a -4 next week to get most of that. Might be good to save WC for the end.

Plan might be to WC in 37. BB in 38.
