Aleksandar Antonov wins 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League crown

A fantastic Gameweek 38+ for Aleksandar Antonov was enough for the Bulgarian to leap from third to first in the overall Fantasy Premier League standings and clinch the 2019/20 crown.

Aleksandar scored a whopping 93 points without the aid of a chip, with his successful captaincy of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) proving key.

Double-digit hauls for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) also boosted his score, with almost 70% of his Gameweek 38+ total coming from those three aforementioned players.

The two managers who had been immediately above our new champion, Joshua Bull and erstwhile leader Chris McGowan, both used chips in Gameweek 38+ but were edged out on the final day.

Joshua used his second Wildcard and racked up 68 points, overtaking Chris but finishing 18 points short of Aleksandar.

Our runner-up captained Harry Kane (£11.0m) on the concluding afternoon of football but even if he had handed the armband to De Bruyne, would still have finished in second spot.

Above: Aleksandar’s winning team

Chris used his Triple Captain chip on Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), meanwhile, with the Egyptian only registering a ‘one-pointer’ after coming off the bench in the second half on Tyneside.

Again, though, handing the armband to his vice-captain, Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), wouldn’t have stopped Aleksandar from winning.

Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen had a Gameweek 38+ to forget after a memorable season, captaining Salah after taking a hit to bring the Liverpool winger in.

Magnus’s Gameweek score of 40 saw him drop from fourth to 11th in the overall standings.

Fantasy Football Scout Leagues

Aleksandar and Chris finished as first and second in our Fantasy Football Scout league, with Bill Wilkins claiming the bronze medal after a successful Free Hit on the final day.

Our Members League was won by Nathan Woollaston, who finished three points clear of regular contributor Lateriser.

Tom Russell claimed the third podium spot in that league.

Ismail Hossan Rasel was the victor in our post-restart mini-league, with TopMarx coming out on top amongst the Mods and Cons.

Congratulations to all of the above managers on their hugely successful seasons.

We’ll have more reaction to come on these success stories in the next few days and weeks.

I was flying up to around DGW and BB. Think I cracked the 10k around that point, but spunked my FH on what wrongly looked like a tempting set of fixtures & followed up with a disastrous WC that included dross like Nketiah, 2 defenders who got perma-crocked the very next week and DDG blocking me from Fernandes. All in all the restart has been a disaster, ended up 60k overall but managed to finish in the top 2 in all of my cash MLs at least so could have been worse.

Ended up 33k with good and bad luck mixed in. The one thing I enjoyed is making ground after lockdown with no chips left and using WC in gw29. I have been moaning about it for weeks. But in reality I needed to catch a wake up and enjoy my ranking through adversity

Anyone fancy the "Guess the 2020-21 price" game for some of the high scoring and hig potential players in each category? Assume that they'll stay at the same club and remian in the same category - a very dodgy assumption with some! I will have missed a load of good players - please forgive. Please include the names (otherwise my goldfish memory will forget after I've scrolled down)

Probably the best fit for my own "first thought" assessments. I don't think Vardy will be that expensive with a Europe campaign - he's also getting progressively slower. Bruno at an eye watering 12 would frighten a few off. We might get away with 8.0 for TAA but we probably shouldn't.

Yeah maybe Sterling down to 12 and Mané at 11/11.5. Points total isn’t the be all and end all of pricing though.

And I remember prices are usually lower than we predict them to be when they come out. Would be good to bookmark people’s guesses.

Sterling was a rubbish pick for the majority of the season. Hattrick in GW1, then a rubbish pick all the way until the break, then fire since the restart. Mane has been consistent throughout the season (even higher ownership than Salah until he got injured in the DGW and the same points/minute as Salah). Sterling has had an off-season by his usual standards, so there is no way he costs more than Mane. There is also no reason for him to cost more than KDB who scored 251. My thoughts are Mane 12 and Sterling 11.5.

I won mine by twelve points but there’s so many things that could gave swung it the other way. I did Salah to Sterling (c) just before deadline. My other options were Bruno to Silva or Aubameyang to Kane. Also, my rival took a hit to get Antonio in for KDB! I definitely count this my luckiest ever win.

And yeah I had Ings for the penalty miss too. Twenty point swing that because my rival had Ramsdale playing. God knows how he finished on as many points as he did now that I think about it. He makes some strange decisions.

Yeah I lost my cash league on total transfers made (we ended up level on points) and I had Ings as (C) for his missed peno.

Trying not to think about it!!

My favourite part of the season, flipping the lid down on the noxious mess of my fpl team, giving the handle a good flush and dreaming of next seasons 4m Lundy, a run to Christmas without the stress of rotations and hoping for an early dgw to leap the rankings.

If you want to save some of your FPL data for this season, I made a tool on LiveFPL that loads your GW history and weekly squads and points into an excel file.

http://www.livefpl.net/save, enter your FPL id and wait 10 seconds or so to load your data, then a link with your excel report will show up.

Hope you have a nice break 🙂

Thank you all! I would have replied to each of you individually but there's extended family duty going on..

I decided against running Virtual FPL during the break as there is not enough time for a proper experience before the new season.

All previous years data was ditched unfortunately and I would love to find them somewhere!

And I am not sure why FPL doesn't update quicker, I am sure if they wanted to do it, they will do it and it won't be that costly.

Cheers again and stay safe 🙂

Ragabolly, Your tool is amazing, and it massively adds to the enjoyment of the game.

Question for you: do you keep time series data over the course of the season? Specifically, I’m interested in the average score per week of the top 10k by chip used (FH, EC, no chip, etc.). I’d like to run some numbers and publish the results here in a community article.

And on more serious note...follow risers/dropers on fplstats, chase bandwagons, drop players before they drop, and dont be afraid of making hits in that process
And at the end of first half of season you will have good TV for sure, but no sure about your rank
So good TV and maybe 1 more bighitter in second half of season maybe wont be enough to make up on those lost points while gaininh that TV

And of course lot of your transfers will be during the week, before all team news are available.. so possibility of injuries after you transfers are made is much bigger

Monitor it when you can and hop on those players rising that you want in your team. Likewise, ditch the deadwood players that are falling. Find out early when price changes happen wherever you are and work to that schedule.

Get on (and off) the early risers. Lundstram/Pukki case in point. You might need to take hits. TV over £1.05m can be a real asset come the end of the season.

No, there's a balance - but you might need to take a hit to get on (and off) the early talent. Price rises tend to happen early in the season when more folk are focussed on the game.

This has largely been said, but you can make a good start by making early transfers in the first few GW's when everyone is still in the game and not being afraid of a few hits to keep up with the market.

If you can catch the coat tails of the first few bandwagons, you can put yourself in a good position (team value wise).

You also need to be aware of net transfers out to make sure you ditch players before they drop by .1 without you noticing.

It sounds like your overall strategy is to build TV to facilitate a higher points total, so don't lose sight of your overall aim. i.e. don't go crazy on hits at the expense of your overall points total and if you think a bandwagon pick is a bad one, don't just get them in to boost your TV.

        Honestly.
You need to move quickly at the beginning of the season.
I don’t like taking hits. But if there is two players really on a bandwagon. You should just take the hit, and get them in. As more than likely. You will want them in your team at some point.
Sometime bandwagon fails. But that’s ok, you can sell on for profit.
Keep your eye on the price drop/rises website. And make your moves accordingly.

If a player is injured, and you have a lot of value tied up. Really think about if it’s worth selling or can you manage with your bench players. Unless the player is out for more than two weeks. It is perhaps worth keeping him in your team. The price drops for the most popular players, doesn’t drop quickly anymore.

Good luck. My Squad value for this season was 106.7

Get on cheap bandwagons. Must be prepared to take a hit every now and then to stop losing value or to gain a riser. Some say value is unimportant. It is until you want all the form players especially around WC. I got up to 109 this season. Helped greatly when I played my FH and WC.

I typically just made my transfers early in the week before price changes took place, TV was up to £107M at one point. Finished on TV £104.9M with £0.2M ITB.

This approach was a gamble (i.e. risk of player injuries etc.) but it worked for me. FYI, I finished with 2321 points (OR 29k).

Comparison tool is great, for example before gw38 I compared fernandes and martial's away form, and it showed fernandes was far more effective. Similarly sterling was much more likely to haul away from home, compared to de bruyne. Stats were right. I ignored both!

Rate my team is useful as an indicator for who might do well over a period too.

          1) The extra articles are helpful.

          2) RMT tool is great spotting a gwk or gwks ahead where your team might be weak in defence for example. The predicted numbers aren't accurate of course but it's a great tool for highlighting faults and also comparing different assets before purchasing.

          C) Fixture ticket is essential stuff. In combination with RMT it's really powerful.

          D) I'd say I use the comparison tool maybe 4 or 5 times a season. It's good.

For me that's it. I'm not a stats guy at all. Never have been and never will be. I dont even watch football anymore but enjoy FF and these tools help to keep me competitive as i lose out a lot with the eye test stuff. Without members area I would struggle for top 100k finishes as I'd be playing blindly.

          I like:
          - shots/ chances stats
          - comparison/ heatmap tool (particularly if you don’t watch loads of football)
          - season ticker
          - RMT as a check. If it moves below 55 points predictions I spend more time thinking through moves
          - value - predicted points per £ throws up a few new ideas

Going double wolves from mid-20s was a great choice that originated from seeing boly’s value when returning from injury

It happens. Covid year put pay to a lot of plans and many folk took advantage of the restart leaving those who weren't ready in their wake. I dropped 50k in a GW because I didn't change my team going back in with the extra WC - totally didn't have my head in the game.

A tale of 2 seasons for me. Was ticking along nicely up to the DGW (after which I was 12K). Then ballsed up my FH & WC, and everything thereafter was a disaster. Ended up 60k.

Not a particularly good season for me, took a -45pt hit when the game resumed, absolutely convinced I had a WC (actually used it GW29). I still hit confirm anyway then went very pale, then saw the funny side (I have prior form doing this).

Yes worst season and first time outside top 100k since I started taking the game more seriously. 175k OR at the end feels very bad. Was out of the running in most MLs before the break.. felt hard done by at so many points during the season, dice just not falling my way

please ask FPL towers to move deadline by 2 hours.. you got enough time to tinker with the team and the leaks is not helping!

Yes, I'm not that guy either tbh, but my point was more that it's a way of getting an edge if you want it (assuming you trust the source). If it helps anyone it's the people like us rather than the casuals.

I wasn't around yesterday, but I assume everyone found out about Salah being benched ahead of KO?

Actually it's just the managers who aren't available and waiting for team leaks.

In some cases they might be the "casual" managers (who FPL should be trying to keep engaged anyway) but in other cases it's people who are playing this international game in a different timezone. Or people who do thorough research throughout a week only to have their good management come to naught because they happen to have commitments in that 10 minute spell. Again, people should be trying to make it easier for people with such commitments to compete, not more difficult.

Plus even among many managers who are tuned in to it, it adds stress and takes away fun. We've seen the online FPL community discuss issues around mental health in the past and this is a needless stressor for those who are trying to balance investing in the game with real life.

The deadline is presumably designed so that we all make decisions not knowing the team news. Clearly that idea is outdated. It leaves some with a clear advantage, so clear that official FPL twitter actually referenced waiting for potential leaks when giving out advice. As a general rule it's a sign of a design flaw when the game itself is pointing to ways to circumvent the mechanics of the game.

And it could have had a say in the final results of the entire season. The guy who was OR #1 in gameweek 37 missed out on the team news and might have lost the game as a result. He certainly isn't a "casual" and shouldn't have been put at that disadvantage.

And it's a problem that's only going to get worse. As I say, it's an outdated game mechanic that makes the game less fair rather than giving an advantage to "better" managers. There's no skill in being able to find out who starts just because you happen to be available at the time.

              So just change it.

It makes more sense to move the deadline to 30 minutes prior. At least then everyone is on the same playing field, with regards to the first game in the GW.
Moving it back 2 hours, there will still likely be ITK accounts who tweet out the info, it will just be 2 hours before, and not 1 hour before.

Hard to tweet out substantive info when the managers have not given their team sheets in to the refs and the PL. They have to do it 90 mins before kick-off. Hence why leaks come out 15 mins before kick-off as it is uploaded on the PL media site by then.

Two hours before kick-off makes sense for the deadline as the PL managers won't have submitted their team sheets by then and hence you can't be sure that any line up news is correct.

Rough: Salah and TAA benched and failing to return. Willian not even in the squad. Dilva transfer in for a hit not returning.

Smooth: KDB TC solves all problems. Jesus transfer provides a return. Win three money leagues leagues and in one, I haul in a 28 point deficit to win by three points. I TCed KDB and he captained Sterling.

Please discuss the impact of leaked team news.

          My 2 cents on it:
          1) For unfavorable time zones, this is a big nuisance. We don't need people to be awake late at night to be called 'dedicated' team managers.

          2) Even for favorable time zones, you don't want to get so 'dedicated' to FPL that you are forced to remain glued to twitter looking at leaked news while your missus shouts and your children cry! (P.S: My missus is extremely supportive and she completely understood why I was jumping up and down on Salah benching around the deadline yesterday. And I don't have children yet)

FPL gains should come from focus and consistency, not from sitting infront of your computer screen ignoring everything else that needs your attention at that time. FPL, after all, is just a game meant to have fun.

Thoughts on the fairness of the unlimited transfers restart? For those with a second wildcard it was a massive advantage. All those that bench boosted GW30+ and then wildcarded a fresh team had a big edge IMO. I dropped from 602nd down to 1,600ish as I had to use my Freehit to compete and only gained 5 points over my normal team in the end. This was then compounded by the same people Freehitting GW38+ and with no chips left it was hard to compete and hold rank. 58 points saw me tumble and 4.0m GW rank my worst of the restart!

Inspired by Hail Cheaters MFFA (Make Fantasy Fun Again):

@hailcheaters a few ideas for MFFA:

            1) Try to always pick a team that has fixtures on every day of a GW (especially Monday night) to have something to psychologically look forward to.

            2) If your captain blanks, treat yourself to a take-away meal that evening or day after

            3) Create a 'Coop FPL' type league on an Excel document where you combine the points of you and one other person in your ML

            4) watch the game with your captain and go onto an exercise bike. You are only allowed off it when your captain returns. Worst case scenario you get fit

I think it probably helped folks with a second WC more than hindered them. Personally I ignored the unlimited transfersI and played my FH in GW30+, bench boosted in 31+ and WC’d in 33+ and fortunately managed to climb from 44k from the restart to 4k at the end. Having the right City and United players seems to have been key.

That killed my season completely. Agree i used chips before restart (BB in ffs cup final) to gain ground.

But that WC + BB in GW 30 was too much to tackle. After getting a beating you try harder & fail even badly 😀

I got lucky and managed to go from 82k at the restart to 8.7k even though I didn't have a WC left. I think those who chose to BB on GW 30+ and use the FH later on fared better than those who FH on GW 30+ and filled their teams with DGW players.

Not sure about this. I was 33,000 on restart with no second wildcard. Bench boosted in GW30, FH in 31, then took a couple of hits to get my team free of Villa/SheffUtd players. After a couple of GWs, my team was as strong as Wildcarders. I finished 3,500 overall. Key part of that was having Sterling for the DGW30 and keeping him.

Not so much a question, as a tribute. To my dad, Tom.

My dad passed on just as we went into the restart, on 13th of June, after several months of bad health, following a decade of fighting cancer. As well as my dad, he was my business partner as well. To say life has been turned upside down would be an understatement.

My Freehit GW30+ team was a last minute cobbling together affair after a difficult few weeks. He always took an interest in my FPL and football in general, being a Saints fan and regular attender until recent years.. In the end I didn't quite nail the top 1k for him, but I'm sure he'd be pleased with my finish of 2,620, and for Saints being safe with games to spare. Thanks for everything dad.

This. My captaincy this year was awful. only 37% of the potential points i could get if i was captaining my highest scorer. Of course u can always choose the higher scorer but surely 50% is an optimal threshold? just for context the winner of fpl had 56% of the potential points he could get.
What is your advice regarding captaincy?

              1. Which players are in your GW1 thoughts
              2. Which if any locked into your GW1 team at this stage
              3. Are you expecting/hoping for any positional reclasses
              4. Which new arrivals are you looking forward to

              1. For me - The "Long List"
GK: Pope & Whoever Bielsa is starting for Leeds
Defs: TAA + four 4.5's who have decent rotatable fixtures (Leeds again & hopefully Brentford if they make it)
Mids: KDB, Bruno, Pulisic, Antonio, Sterling, Son, Grealish
Forwards: Greenwood, Ings, Jimmy, Rashford, Martial, Kane is back, maybe even that old troll Mr Bamayang

              2. The short-list
              TAA, KDB, Bruno, Ings

              3. Reclasses
Martial to forward - will definitely happen
Lundtsram to midfielder - will definitely happen
Rashford to Midfielder - may not happen
Greenwood to Midfielder - may not happen
Antonio to forward - may not happen
Auba to midfielder - probably won't happen, but he starts out on the wing ALL THE TIME

              4. Interesting newbies
Werner (brilliant season, preceeded by several average/reasonable seasons)
Ziyech (good in champions league for Ajax - good age too, at 27 might help him adapt quicker than being younger)

Thoughts for potential new chip next season? You think they'll be keeping the free hit? My thought would be a one-off change of captain post GW before the next deadline. Absolute game changer! (I would change to KDB for yesterday to win my ML that I led since September)

It would seem only fair to bring the deadline forward this season, both to accommodate players working awkward shifts and stamp out the last minute plague of self-absorbed ITKs. It's one thing monitoring a player's fitness until the last minute, but spilling on team sheets is illegal and the FPL rules ought to reflect that.

How important are captaincy points and what points total should we be targeting from our captains over the season?
How can we improve our captaincy choices? Should we do more upside chasing like Lateriser and try to get the best possible captain every week even if it means going against the most popular captain?

My Captaincy Points: 480 (12.63 PPG)
Total Captain Points as % of Overall Score : 21.36%
              Rank : 141831

If I had 52 points more from my captain I would be in the Top 50k and if I had 112 points more from my captain I would be in the Top 10k.

For me, FPL has morphed into a game where you:

              1) Trust in your big hitters even if they blank a couple of times - they're premiums for a reason and will bounce back
              2) Plan your captaincy pick weeks in advance. I've found playing in 4-week blocks to be effective and to identify who my captain will be for the next 4-5 GWs. If I see a GW coming up where I'm massively exposed (e.g. Salah at home to fodder and I don't own him) I will start planning well in advance to bring him in
              3) Don't focus on rotating premiums, but rather look at the 'floating positions' in your team such as your third defender or fourth midfielder. For example, moving from midfielders like McGinn, Grealish, Maddison, Antonio, Saint-Maximin throughout the season when they hit a streaky spell with good fixtures.
              4) Don't make sideways transfers - look for moves with high upside. I took 11 hits this season and finished 3,500 overall and most of my hits were for players I was bringing in to captain.

yeah, agree with 3 bigly - the 'lesser' players seem to score better with nice fixtures, seems obvious but a KDB can and does score well against anyone, Antonio not so much.

People will call it gamblers fallacy or whatever but if a player like KDB goes 3/4 weeks without anything at all you can pretty much guarantee it's coming - instead of removing them completely maybe it's just time to not captain them for a couple of weeks until they get their groove back. You've already held through the blanks so you may as well reap the coming rewards - I'll be enforcing my 'spine' idea more strongly this season

Choosing the right premiums at the right time seems to be the difference between great and poor seasons for us FPL managers..

Should we stick with a few select premiums through thick and thin or chop and change as we go? If we decide to chop and change- what are the main factors to consider?

My question is quite a simple one. I know ye have been playing FPL for many seasons now, but is there anything new you learned specifically this season?

What changes would you like to see to FPL next year?

For me: 1) change the deadline time (in certain parts of the world, the deadline is in the middle of the night, and we aren’t awake for team leaks); 2) change the cup qualification process, or eliminate the cup entirely (I finished 8K, but didn’t qualify for the cup).

The deadline time change seems the most fair. If there are ITKs who get the team line up the day before then so be it - but those who get advanced knowledge due to media contacts 10 minutes or so before deadline would have an advantage that can easily be prevented.

                - Iron our the bugs in the app
                - Improve the auto pick function so it actually makes interesting suggestions instead of just chucking the same useless player in your team 10 times straight
                - Consider changing the deadlines to prevent early team news leaks
                - Give decent prize money for the top finishers (They make so much from ad revenue, even if the game is free they can be less stingy with the prizes)

            I didn't take a single -4 hit this season. Finished 70kish

On one had I pat myself on the back but on the other, I think its probably overly-conservative and I need to take a few more risks.

I look at the top guys overall hits this year and its such a mixed bag. Hard to draw any conclusions.
            1st - 28pts, hits on 6 occasions
            2nd - 0pt hits
            3rd - 24pt hits, hits on 6 occasions
            4th - 12 pt hits, hits on 3 occasions
            5th - 24pt hits, hits on 6 occasions

Really depends your moves tho, I remember one guy a couple of seasons back on here. He took a -4 or -8 every single week for something like 8 weeks and went from something like 2mil to 25k.
He was probably just exceptionally lucky, but in his instance hits heavily paid for themselves.

I don't think hits taken correlate with OR at all. Imho you have to evaluate every possible -4 individually and not through a season long strategy

I think you're probably right. In some cases it's a no brainer to take a hit, for e.g. if you can't field 11 players. It's the 50/50s where it makes all the difference. This season I've clearly erred on the side of caution. I think next season I might take a few more punts.

It's laudable that you didn't take a hit but you are depriving yourself of an essential tool. By all means be frugal with hits but don't have "No hits" as an breakable vow. Good luck with just a few hits next year! 😀

Yeah. Hits are part of the game. -4 for a player out of form to bring in a player bang in form is not only worth the risk for that gameweek but can pay out for weeks to come. I think if it as an investment more than 'hit'. Yes there's both risk and short term loss, but the payout can be greater than sticking to low risk market moves.

The only player I kept was Sterling.

The others I dropped combined for 23 points from 10 players (11 from Bruno F - all others blanked).

On the FH team, the 10 players without Sterling combined for 66 - FH success!

That's correct. it goes on least transfers made first.

I know Team ID can play a part too, if everything is level then it can go to who has the lowest ID (whoever created their team first).

But for mini leagues, i know i am in one where it was tied on points and the money will be split, which i think is fairest. I had made less transfers too but not really the fairest solution that!

I've had 9 finishes inside the top 30k now, a 49k, an 80k, and three outside the top 100k the worst being 280k. I have a background in stats. Undoubtedly it would reduce variance.
Also, probably shift importance of team value taking greater precedence, as statistically higher priced players get more points.
It wouldn't be much fun, you may as well get an algorithm to make your transfers.

Thanks for sharing your domain knowledge.

Incidentally, given your background, do you rely heavily on player stats to inform your selections?

Actually I don't as not that fanatical. I'd rather just play for fun in work mini leagues.
I defer to bookies odds as a short cut, if i need to make a 50/50 call between players.
Besides, everyone is looking at stats, so why are some high ranking and low ranking.
For a shortcut. I go with just heat map, eye test, press news, and bookies odds.
I work with stats all day, my eyes roll, when I hear people go on about XG and XA.

I’ll post an exceptionally long post at some point confirming all the details but now gw38 is out the way and I have included KDBs haul.
Salah being cap whenever at home with KDB being cap in all other instances (bar pools double where salah got triple cap despite being away).
The grand total would have been 658 points

I think a lot of managers are unaware of how punty they are over a season with their captains. Been observing this for many years. Theres only a handful of legit weekly options and a few now-and-thens.

First half of the season I did very week with captain picks, had a massive captain score. Could only find one player on this forum beating what I had. Second half was an absolute mess, idk what changed, but I clearly got way more punty for some reason.

Yep. Going against literally all the powerful players in any given gwk is really dangerous. I had 3 huge punts this season. Highest return from them was 2pts. Cost myself 1000's in OR but I'm okay with it. Just need to pick better when taking those few risks. Captain picks usually my strong point though as I dont feck around too much. 616pts over the season from (c).

I think we are aware, I simply don't have the self control to just captain one or two options. It would take away so much of what makes fpl fun for me, even though it isn't good for my rank. There'll always be times in the season where you think to yourself "hmm the most popular option could blank here" and start thinking about alternate caps

Perhaps you are aware, fair enough. But so many aren't. A quick look at the forum here right as FT's are coming in and you'll see so many managers moaning their ludicrous picks blanked or got a single return whereas Salah or whoever has hauled. It's actually quite funny 😀

True true, I don't think i captained a shocker this season but I definitely went against the most popular option just over a third of the time

I’m thinking that Bruno has to have entered the perma cap debate too.

Theres a pattern emerging for sure. Perma cap is a bit too extreme imo but Fernandes, De Bruyne, Salah / Mane triple threat is going to be the way forward I think. Maybe Rashford too if he's reclassified but I dont think he will be.

Double digit returns in the season:

                              KDB 10
                              Salah, Sterling 9
                              Vardy, Mane 8
                              Willian, TAA 7
Martial, Son, Mahrez, Auba, Fernandez, Doherty, DSilva 6
                              Rashford, Lundstrum, Abraham 5
Kane, Pope, Henderson, Aguero, Jesus 4
                              Ings, Jimenez 3
                              Robertson, Pulisic 1

Surprised to see Willian up there

Definitely giving serious consideration to perma cap next season

Ended up with around 480 cap points this year, and about 60 of those were from Sterling's hattrick last week & triple captain yesterday

Perfect candidates in Bruno & KDB too - I don't really want a 12.5 asset who can't perform away from home when another 12.5 asset starts alongside him!

If you perma capped the highest scoring player this season you'd only top your actual captain total by 20pts. Fpl doesn't have a perna cap option unless Fernandes can actually sustain that output or Aguero plays 35+ games. Both unlikely i think.

I know, that's fair - but "only" and "20 points" shouldn't appear in the same sentence - that is gigantic

If i can get 20 EXTRA points, for making 37 LESS decisions - that's fine in my book

And it would have been much more if it wasn't for Sterling smashing in 60+ captaincy points in 2 of the last 3 weeks

Maybe we're kidding ourselves that we'll have the discipline to captain KDB away to Spurs when Salah is home to Villa, but that's the type of discipline perma captain will require

Try remembering overall rank, is meaningless. You don’t get anything different from finishing 1.5K overall to 1.5M overall, except from some congratulations from randoms on the internet.

Try get a cash mini league with your friends and play for some money. Keeps things entertaining and your not playing for OR then. You could win your ML finishing 100K and win money. OR is so overblown here it’s bizzare. People take pride in it, but at the end of the day, you gain nothing. Thats my advice.

I decided this season to make "promotion to the FFS H2H league, division 1" my priority, as I enjoy the H2H format as a change to focussing on OR. Happily, I won division 2 league 1 and that means I'm in the top league next season. Great when an objective comes off.
This did reflect on my OR and I was reasonably happy with an OR of 3081, even though it was a bit lower than last seasons 868 finish.
I had said that this would be my last season as I'm 67 next, but I now will do 1 more season in the top H2H league with a hope of some success.
This season a lot of lucky punts have worked out and i totally concur with FPL Grahams comment below that "if you look at your team the night before and are happy with it, then stick with it". It is a great feeling when your score is good and you havnt chased any points by following the bandwagon.
I hope players achieved their goals this season and stick with it if you didn't.

I think most of us are guilty of tinkering too much. We spend too much time on here and maybe that encourages us to make changes.
The game is so long and you want to find a bit of excitement in it, that normal manifests itself in the form of hits or pointless moves.
I think we would all be better having more patience, and playing in a more boring manner. So I’m leaning towards having a fairly settled team with some staples in my team I jsut won’t change at all during the season unless hit by injury. Like next season these guys are just staying in my team all season:
Pope, TAA, Robbo, Salah, KDB and Jimi.
My captain will be a Salah and LDB rotation. Salah at home priority cap, KDB all others.

It’s boring but it will be effective

My friend made a set and forget team, and that team outscored both our teams with 66 and 62 transfers respectively .

                                Sterling?

I was thinking about players in my team next season and i feel like KDB, Sterling, Salah, Trent and probably still Bruno will certainly be mainstays.

Then a def/gk from Burnley, Wolves and Sheff. Along with Jimi.

KDB, Sterling, Salah, Trent and Bruno will probably leave you with about 45M for 10 players. There'll be no Jimi with that sort of restriction.

I adopted this approach this year, only making one hit, and it's paid of with a finish inside the Top 4k.

Some managers are better playing more aggressive, but evidently it doesn't suit my game at all.

Quite the year to do my first FPL season...I’m frazzled. Started off basically picking players I like with no regards for fixtures, showing far too much loyalty to dross, tying up too much team value to limit transfer options. All the rookie errors!

However, managed to win my mini league (pretty poor one since my OR is 300k but winning is winning) and beat the person who has won it for the last 7 years, after going in to the last GW on even points. Next year top 50k target!

FPL affects mental health. As strange as it sounds, i can guarantee there are people on this forum who become disheartened when they have a bad week and fall thousands of places down the ranks because they don’t own a highly owned player. Its common, it’s an addictive game. I myself can become moody if i have a bad week. I find myself constantly checking scores on a weekend, hoping my rival’s captain doesn’t haul. The emphasis on overall rank is a huge part the problem i feel. I know the aim of the game is to finish as high as possible, but it’s supposed to be enjoyable, people become stressed falling from the top 10K, and for what?

I think if players were able to forget overall rank, and just focus on ML’s it makes things much easier, as you’re not playing against 7M players, you’re playing against 5-15 or so of your friends, and the day i stopped worrying about FPL Overall rank, was the day i actually started enjoying myself again, not making transfers to ‘keep up’ with the pack.

What do you do that helps you not get too engulfed in the game?

Yeah I used to get like that after a bad week. Still do to an extent but nowhere near as bad. Not sure what changed for me to be honest.

I’ve never really worried about overall rank, only my main minileague. I won it the first five or six years in a row and I think that instilled this thing in me that I HAD to win. Haven’t won it for three or four years until this year again so maybe that made me chill out a bit. Who knows?

Try not to worry about you rank mate. I don't really focus on my rank or even look at my leagues at all (up until the last week or 2)

Just focus on your own team and making the best transfers each week. The points and rank will follow that!

Actually I have already decided to take your same approach, Rock. I'm tired of checking out what my closest rivals players are and if I should bring them in too, or use differentials to them, and hope that their players don't haul, etc, etc.

I think not knowing anything and playing just your game and what you believe in is the healthiest approach. As long as you have enough experience in this game, all you need is your knowledge and a little info from sites like Fantasy Football Scout and trusted football news.

I would just look at your closest rivals teams just for the last two gameweeks if you are chasing.

Yeah agreed, my best ever finish came when I didn't actually really know about or pay attention to "Overall Rank" until midway through the season, and even then I just transferred the players I thought would get most points regardless of ownership or "top10k ownership" etc.

I've always found the best thing with this game is to look at the side before deadline and if you're reasonably happy with it, remember that feeling when the points roll in (either for you or against you). It's only pre-deadline that you can do anything about it anyway.

Doesn't mean you have to be utterly zen in the moment when your Triple-captain gets taken off with an injury after 25 mins of the first game of a DGW(!) but once that happens, try to get past it reasonably quickly & just accept the likely 'red arrow'... and if you're watching the match, just enjoy it as a sport spectacle.

It's each individual's mindset. I've seen some people post here about this, but they need to remember that it's just a game at the end of the day (with at least 30% luck).

I care about overall rank and not MLs (because 7m players over 5-15 is more exciting), but it doesn't affect my mental health. Sure I can get a bit moody after some 50-50 decisions go wrong, but it lasts only about an hour for me. At the end of the day, ORs don't get you anything, so once the season is over and the next one begins, I only care about that season and not my past ORs.

                                I absolutely agree with you.

I believe there a few things FPL can do to reduce the need for managers to become so glued to the game, and thus perhaps affected by it:

#1 Deadline 2 hours before kick off. Nobody benefits from early team news.

#2 Fixed price changes day. No need to check every single day when there's no games.

#3 Time limit when logged in. Maximum 1 hour at a time, then locked out for 1 hour.

I distanced myself from posting comments 2 seasons ago.

Reasons were I found myself following peoples advice 90% of the time and most of the time it went wrong so then got angry about it and having this forum was the obvious scapegoat.

So I reduced my time on the boards and only started looking at my team on Thursday/Friday on normal weeks. I actually felt more in control and it’s helped me to my two best finishes back to back. Also knowing it was my decision if things went bad actually helped because I could learn from the mistakes.

I spend a lot of time here, but I typically do this. I make my transfers, I then ask people what they think pretending I haven’t done them yet 😀

This website does not help. I love this forum as it’s a superb place for advice and info from some knowledgeable players. But the trolling that occurs, can make it a pretty toxic environment on match days. People get bitter.

But the obsession surrounding OR is not needed. Yes finishing top 1000K overall is an achievement, but its an achievement that reaps 0 rewards. Finishing 1000k gains nothing on someone finishing 1.0M, except some writing on the website. Maybe more rewards somehow would help change this

The one thing I have always done is not give a continental about overall rank. 33k this year could have been 10k if i did not cover my ML. It is too easy to get yourself down worrying about rubbish.

Nothing more satisfying than winning your minileague without winning one manager of the month prize. Slow and steady wins the race.

Annoyingly that would have also been me but I won July

Satisfying? I'd still like to be winning it the odd month 🙂

                                Congrats though!

Think it’s more satisfying because I haven’t won it for a few years. Used to win it every year.

The guy who came 2nd in our M/L didn’t put one Liv asset in all season....

Proves that this season there were no ‘essential’ players but a pool of strong FPL options to chose from

That’s nothing to do with FPL, that’s just age!

Exactly. I know I’m getting old because I remember Ryan Giggs making his United debut. 😀

Ah memory lane, I remember that. Along with Milan wanting to buy him for £10m a season or two later

Watched the Gazza documentary on Sky yesterday and that brought back some memories too

Also I remember Baines being one of my first target transfers from Wigan in FM back then. Feels like a lifetime ago now!

I only have a 6 after my user name but been playing since the year dot. I was oblivious of such sites. I think I dabbled with FF Cheat or fix; I can't even remember.

Well played Aleksandar. I feel stupid saying on Scout twitter account after his Scoutcast appearance he was bound to drop in rank due to lack of chips available for GW+38. On other hand he replied he was muting all such noise away. Maybe seeing comments like that fired him up to go more aggressively to show me how wrong I was thinking chips had such importance

                                What was his chip strategy?

He had none left for the last GW.
You can check out all chips in his GW history:

                                  WC2: GW23
