Vote for the best FPL defenders of 2019/20

The Fantasy Football Scout end of season awards continue this week with another poll for you to vote in.

We started the week looking at goalkeepers, but it is time to focus on defenders, overall points, price and value in Fantasy Premier League all factors to consider.

2019/20 was another season for flying wing-backs with an interesting overlap with last season’s best performers…

2018/19 Team of the Season Review – Defenders

  • Goalkeeper: Alisson
  • Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Matt Doherty
  • Midfielders: Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling, Ryan Fraser, Eden Hazard
  • Forwards: Raúl Jiménez, Sergio Aguero

It is not so often that we see this but each one of last season’s best defenders managed to follow up with another strong campaign in the following year.

Just over 12 months ago, Liverpool pair Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson tied the vote on a share of 25.1% each having scored 185 and 213 points respectively.

This time around, despite a drop in clean sheets, both full-backs secured more attacking returns than in 2018/19, Robertson total rising from 12 to 14 and Alexander-Arnold’s from 14 to 19.

Matt Doherty also went from strength-to-strength in 2019/20. The Wolves wing-back’s first full Premier League campaign yielded a total of four goals, seven assists, eight clean sheets and a final score of 144.

It was up to 167 points for Doherty this time, which we’ll cover in more detail below…

2019/20 CANDIDATES

Trent Alexander-Arnold

What Liverpool win at Leicester means for FPL assets involved
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Andrew Robertson in action for Liverpool

What a year it has been for Trent Alexander-Arnold, finishing the campaign with more points than any other FPL defender (210).

In the end, he was agonisingly close to breaking the record for highest season score in that position, set by Robertson’s 213 points in 2018/19, but a Gameweek 38+ benching robbed him of the opportunity.

However, the fact that Alexander-Arnold got so close to that tally is a telling reminder of what he has to offer. Remember that Robertson reached 213 points with 21 clean sheets to back it up; his right-sided counter-part got three points shy with seven fewer shut-outs.

It was, of course, attacking returns that set the tone for Alexander-Arnold in 2019/20, as he involved himself in 19 of Liverpool’s goals.

Direct free-kicks were mostly responsible for his four strikes, while a total of 15 assists was at least three more than any other defender this season, and seven more than Lucas Digne, who finished third for that particular statistic.

Accordingly, Alexander-Arnold secured seven double-figure Gameweek scores, including a record-breaking 24-point haul at Leicester during the winter.

Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty continues to fly the flag for something of a dying breed in FPL over recent years: the flying wing-back.

Wolves’ 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 systems have both featured the Republic of Ireland international in advanced positions once again in 2019/20.

As a result, despite a price-hike to £6.0m, Doherty still offered value, with four goals, eight assists, 12 clean sheets and 167 points overall. That made him the only non-Liverpool player in the top-four among defenders.

It was really the second half of the campaign that the right wing-back’s explosive potential became apparent, as his attacking capabilities were finally combined with reliable defensive returns.

Wolves had always been good at keeping things tight during Nuno Espirito Santo’s Premier League campaign but often struggled to convert this into clean sheets.

Willy Boly’s return to the side from injury in Gameweek 25 made all the difference. Between then and the end of the campaign, Wolves kept nine clean sheets from a possible 14, the joint-best in the division.

As a result, Doherty registered four double-figure hauls during this period, blanking on just two occasions. A price rise to £6.5m seems inevitable for 2019/20 but if Wolves keep up their clean sheet output, it may be a price well worth paying.

John Lundstram

FPL 2019/20 In Review Part One - Goalkeepers and Defenders

What can we say about this man that hasn’t already been said? A one-man cheat code for much of the 2019/20 season, John Lundstram will go down in Fantasy Premier League history like nobody ever has done before.

A £4.0m defender starting as a box-to-box midfielder in a team that can keep clean sheets meant ‘the Lord’ could offer various scoring avenues.

While he was well-known in the Fantasy Football Scout community during pre-season, the rest of the world first discovered Lundstram in Gameweek 2 when he scored the solitary goal in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and registered a 14-point haul.

It got even better in Gameweek 11 when he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Burnley and came away with a whopping 21 points from one match.

Admittedly, Lundstram was unable to spend the entire of the season in the Sheffield United side, losing his place to Sander Berge just before lockdown, but he still managed a fair number of starts afterwards, adding a goal on the final day of the season.

But it is hard to say 2019/20 was not a success for him as a Fantasy asset. Five goals, four assists, 10 clean sheets, 15 bonus, 144 points, an average of 4.3 per game, all for a man who started the season at £4.0m.

A shift to midfield and likely price-hike to above £5.5m awaits for Lundstram, but we can still cherish the memories.

Ricardo Pereira

It might be a long time since Ricardo Pereira was a much-discussed Fantasy asset considering his pre-lockdown injury, but in the first half of the campaign, he was up there with the best.

Between Gameweeks 1 and 15, Leicester’s right-back was joint-top for clean sheets among defenders with a total of seven as the Foxes made a lightning-fast start to 2019/20.

At that point, Pereira was level with Jonny Evans and Çaglar Söyüncü but had more attacking returns at the time and was playing in a more advanced role.

That had helped the Portuguese international score 82 points in the first 15 matches of the campaign, at an average of 5.5 per game.

Things tailed off for Pereira as Leicester’s form dipped and he picked up an injury between Gameweeks 29 and 30+, but there is still plenty of potential going forward if he can get fit for 2020/21.

Andrew Robertson

As previously mentioned, Robertson could not quite match his record-breaking 213-point season tally from 2018/19 this time around but a score of 181 is nothing to be sniffed at.

The clean sheets did drop off for Liverpool this year, the Scottish international able to capitalise on a total of 13, but he more than made up for that short-coming as he pushed forward.

Registering the same number of assists as the previous campaign (12), Robertson advanced his goal threat in the Premier League during 2019/20, netting twice.

That helped him average five points per game this season and, as the campaign wore on, he started to find himself matching Alexander-Arnold’s output once again.

Between Gameweeks 31+ and 38+, Liverpool’s Beckham-esque right-back got just three attacking returns. Increasing his role in corners, Robertson doubled that tally with one goal and five assists combining for involvement in six of Liverpool’s strikes.

Another price-hike seems likely for the left-back in 2020/21, and we could see yet another campaign of debate over which Liverpool full-back is the better option.

Caglar Söyüncü

As mentioned above, Söyüncü was one of those Leicester defenders who had produced more defensive returns than others in the same positon during the first 15 Gameweeks.

It was the Turkish international who achieved the highest levels of popularity as a result, considering his kind starting price of £4.5m.

Even when he hit £5.0m at the height of Leicester’s powers, that was still better value than those around him in the Foxes’ defensive unit and there was, of course, some attacking threat too.

During the period in question he assisted in a 2-1 win over Sheffield United before posting a 14-point haul for a goal, clean sheet and three bonus against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 11.

Like Pereira, things tailed off for Söyüncü after Leicester hit their rough patch, keeping just five clean sheets from Gameweek 16 onwards and not adding to his attacking returns.

Despite that poor second half of the campaign, price rises are probably incoming for Leicester defence, even if it’s just by £0.5m, which will make it harder to consider Söyüncü in 2020/21.

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is often seen as third-fiddle to Alexander-Arnold and Robertson but finishing as the third-highest-scoring FPL defender is nothing to be sniffed at.

Despite that aforementioned drop-off in clean sheets (from 20 to 15 for van Dijk), Liverpool’s centre-back still ended up with 178 points, just three shy of Robertson.

Playing every minute of the cmpaign certainly helped, which may come into play a lot more for Fantasy managers next season when the price gap between van Dijk and the full-backs expands and Neco Williams starts taking starts off their hands.

It is also worth pointing out that 2019/20 provided more double-figure hauls for van Dijk than it did Robertson. While the left-back recorded just one, the Dutch international managed two of them.

The first came when he scored both goals in a 2-1 win against Brighton, racking up 17 points, before 15 were posted in 2-0 win over Manchester United.

Very much agree. Makes it slightly harder for casuals and also dilutes some of the (alleged) global Man United fan bias where good United player performances can skew the weekly averages.

Agreed. I think that was more of a 'personal piece' i.e. there were no datasets, no real facts or figures, just what someone believes. If he had put data in there to prove his beliefs (as with endless Kepa articles) I think it would be taken more seriously.

As it Stands, Aguero and Jesus as strikers

Sterling Mahrez Foden Torres Bilva wide.

So Sterling and Foden left wide, Mahrez and Bilva right wide. Then Torres to get minutes whichever side he plays.

Foden and Bilva could also play centrally and both are more likely to do so regularly with no Dilva, especially Foden.

            Foden is left footed...

But Sterling is still key. I expect he'll play the most out of the wide forwards.

This. Sterling got most of the games when Sane was fit, and he'll get most of the games now that Ferran Torres has arrived. It's great if other people ignore him because of rotation fears, but I think there's (another) big season ahead for Sterling.

I don't know why Stones isn't deployed as a defensive mid more often, perhaps a deep-lying playmaker with defensive chops. It's clear he's always a stupid mistake away from costing his team a goal, but I do think he could play an important role in a top premier league team and in midfield he doesn't have to be the weak point/last line of defence.

That's a key role at a lot of clubs and especially City, so far he hasn't demonstrated anything like the dynamism and reading of the game needed to suit it.

Not sure if this is true but I am hearing that teams that progress further in CL/EL will get an extended break before PL starts for them. So this could result in a blank GW1 for teams like United, Wolves and City if they progress further say to the Semi Finals or Finals of CL/EL

              Anyone else heard about this?

Yes, according to Ben Crellin, a team that wins CL or EL would have to play the Super Cup in the midweek of GW2, so they could actually start with two BGW's. Imagine City and United both starting with two BGW's!

Even more reason to skip City and UTD assets for at least 4 GW's.

They also won't have had much rest. Poor Bruno who looks jaded. May have to get him a walking stick.

Me too, I'd probably be willing to take a -8 to get the necessary players in after the blanks, to preserve the WC. If there is a DGW3, that could also enable playing TC in a week when others are prevented from doing so because they are playing WC instead.

People suggesting all sorts of possible changes to the game. How's about allowing people to have blanks instead of players, i.e. distribute your funds across as many of the 15 available slots as you choose?

They won't do that, everyone will have no sub keeper and at least 1 outfield blank, just becomes the new template.

Jordan Sancho according to German sauces would prefer to join LFC instead of UTD.

Well he won't be rocking up at LFC so probably will stay at Dortmund unless UTD deciide to make him one of their top earners flashing the cash in his face.

Well we didn't need German sources to tell us what should be obvious to everyone. But Liverpool aren't in for him/won't spend that much so he will go to UTD if they stump up the cash

Liverpool are haggling over signing a top 5 CM for 30m so no point entertaining a 100m+ signing in a position where they have 2 of the best.

Seems like an easy suggestion to make to get clicks - why would Sancho prefer United over Liverpool? 😆

He'll probably end up at United eventually, they'll pay up probably.

Yeah, all these sauces are past their sell by date.

Klopp did say he wants to keep the squad lean. I do believe he will bring in a CB though, Matip has become sicknote which is a pity and perhaps a midfielder if Milner left. Hendo seems to be getting injured often as well so we will need cover.

Not expecting anything to be honest. They didn't spend when there wasn't a pandemic, I don't see them spending when there is one. Unless we make money etc. Already 10m from Lovren. Let's see if the likes of Grujic, Wilson and Shaqiri generate enough funds to bring in quality.

                      Liverpool's bench is horrific.

We won the Title with this squad. I do not think it is about money. LFC are floating in cash now with winning the EPL, CL earnings etc.

Need to move on a few players like you mentioned first to make some space.

They have money, just won't spend because it's a clear sell to buy policy. Which I agree with in essence, but I think it's a model Liverpool have outgrown.

Liverpool got knocked out of CL and FA because of Adrian for example. One injury to the front 3 and it's a serious problem.

No, I think LFC are much more prudent in the transfer market and Klopp knows what he wants.

We do not want to end in a situation like with Brendan where we had deadwood and just bought in players for the fun of it. That kind of transfer strategy lands as up with a squad being hindered by deadwood.

There is always 'what if' Salah or Mane get injured each season.

We cannot bring in players to replace them sitting on the bench.

We can also say what if Sterling and Jesus get injured when Aguero has a knee injury.

Liverpool are on the right track now strategy wise and no need to enter back into the past where tranfer windows ended in tears.

If sterling Jesus and Aguero got injured together..
City could still lineup their top5 players with Foden Dilva Bilva KDB Mahrez.
What would Liverpool do if 2 of their top 3 got injured?

LB would probably be least bothered place Ed would be. With Shaw & Williams there.

I'd like to see a squad quality FB signing too who can play on both flanks if needed ....

                Saw lateriser's HT too.

                I was thinking about something.
Man United & City can't have home fixtures in one GW due to logistics issues right ??

I being able to get wayward quickly with thoughts can fall for wrong © options easily.

So how about Bruno & KDB in team & perma © home guy ??

                Both heartthrobs of respective teams.

That with double pool defense. Hmmm

If i have learned anything this season, © isn't a thing to fu.. about. Punts are for 6th/7th attacker's not ©.

It's a viable route but Salah is an animal at Anfield. It makes up for his blue away form.

My preferable route would be (c) Salah in every home game, and then (c) KDB/Bruno when Salah is away.

                    Yeah ... You're right maybe.

My last season start was so horrible because of reliance upon Raz & Mo tbh. They failed me miserably too many times.

It will be impossible to get Taa Salah KDB Bruno & a good squad though 😀

                      Depends on prices etc.

I agree with your original post, keep it simple with captaincy. And that's coming from someone who captained a Digne blank when KDB got 19 points.

Thinking structure is going to be key to 20/21

Expecting players to be reassigned and the return of the premium forward

                  Premium forward are dead.
Not because of premium Midfield only. But because of rise of Taa Robbo Doherty.

Need cash to bulk up the defence.
With Ings Jimenez doing well & Taa Doherty Robbo outscoring most of big named players we're helpless actually tbh to avoid Big hitting striker's (I'm not too lucky with tge best one around Aguero so i might be biased)

They will absolutely be above 10m. As I've said in another thread: nailed-on starting forward for a Champions League team who's coming off a 17 goal season? That's an automatic 10m minimum.

As for Werner, you only have to look at similar examples. Morata when he came to Chelsea was 10.5 I believe. Werner will be similar - it's not like FPL towers will think he'll have competition from Abraham or Giroud, so they'll treat him as nailed-on in their pricing.

Maybe you're right. I don't expect Martial to be 10+ for sure. Maybe 0.5 more for being nailed as anything.

Werner will have 2 strikers to compete with. If Tammy is 9m I'd expect Timo to be within 1m range too.

Even that looks so expensive though isn't it 😮

Werner won't be competing with anyone - I don't think he signed on to be fighting wiht Abraham for game time! However even if he did, that's irrelevant - since I believe FPL will treat him as nailed-on in their pricing.

As for Martial, he was extremely underpriced at 8.0 given what he did this season. I will extremely surprised if he's less than 10 - let's bookmark this and see who's right about this 😉

(I'll be more than happy to be proved wrong as I'd love them to be viable options with a power mid, but I just don't see it)

Pulisic didn't sign to compete with Mount too though. Yet he needed half a season to get in the first 11.

When there are options available on bench & we get a young foreign player who will need time to get used to the beast PL is i think FPL must be considering these things.

I'd happily take Pulisc at 8.5 & Tony at 10 next season. If Tony is more expensive & United somehow miss out on Sancho, greenwood would be oue Man

Can't see Werner being that much. Max 9.5.

Above 10m and not many may consider him. If you do decide to go and he is at 10.5 then that is the only Chelsea asset you will be having. Towers might remember the Morata overpriced flop.

I reckon prices on all the new additions into FPL will be reasonable.

The top scoring players this season are the ones which will be hiked badly. Auba probably going to be minimum 12m next season. If you go Salah KDB then fitting Auba is a problem. Will even be a problem fitting Werner at 10.5 having KDB Salah TAA at 7.5 or 8.

See my reply above to save time.

Werner is in the same category as Auba and Morata when they came to the PL - they were both 10.5. He'll get the same star treatment by FPL towers.

As I said, I'll be more than happy to be proved wrong as I'd love to have him at under 10, but I think it's extremely unrealistic to expect that.

Yeah, expecting Pulisic to go demon next season. He just needs to stay fit!

Havertz is another player tempting me if Chelsea had to sign him. Have done some research on him and read some really good thing about him. Triple CHE attack could be on the cards...

The price on Jesus was surprising at the start of the season?

If anything Giroud if he stays will be upped in price as well as Tammy and Werner will come in at a reasonable fee.

Let's see how it pans out.

Why would the price on Jesus be surprising? He wasn't nailed on and was competing with an unknown Argentinian player called Sergio Aguero 😉

Martial is nailed on, and for all intents and purposes, so is Werner. (as I said, even if he doesn't turn out to be nailed on, FPL will treat him as a nailed on star in their pricing)

"... Premium forward are dead ...". Well, almost dead. In terms of value (i.e., points/GBP) they are. Not a single one in the "Over 20" benchmark group.

In the "10-20" group we have a few interesting names:

                    Name Team Points Price Points/GBP
                    Rashford Man Utd 177 8.9 19.9
                    Aubameyang Arsenal 205 10.9 18.8
                    Jesus Man City 146 9.9 14.7
                    Kane Spurs 158 11 14.4
                    Lacazette Arsenal 118 9.2 12.8
                    Agüero Man City 132 11.6 11.4

Some won't be forwards next year though.

Most annoying thing is midfielder getting 5 points for a goal.

CS point. That's almost like 2 bps per game 😀

Maybe game needs to change. If Salah & Kun are to score hattrick Kun gets 17 & Salad goes to 21.

I'm saying thay from experience of watching midfielders outscoring my striker's GW in GW out 😀

A nice approach is to target the midfielders from the big teams, and go with the talismanic forwards from the smaller teams.

Logic being that there is less likely to be a sharing of points and so 1 goal = 3 bonus almost all the time. The likes of Wood, Ings, Jimenez, Maupay, Pukki, King, Deeney etc.

I agree with this point of cheap forwards. If you play a 3-5-2/ 4-4-2 then you could have three £6m/ £7m strikers and sub the player that is away at a big club. Strikers are streaky too so better to switching due to form and fixtures whilst just sticking patiently with your premium mids.

Jimi, Ings, dcl, ayew (as a third), tammy, giroud, pukki all fit into this category at some point in the season.

Haller, joelington, wesley, wilson didn’t work out but easy to change.

Just checked. Someone like dcl is miles better at home than away so three cheap strikers and playing the one at home could work.

Wood similar uplift at home too

Figuring out Pep roulette will be challenging and take some time, so perhaps KdB and/or Sterling from the start. It is impossible to win fpl early, but much easier to lose it imo.

Lampard could very well play diamond formation with two up top. Someone on here posted a scouting article about Werner working better playing off a second striker.

So Tammy Werner combo could be what Frank goes for with Pulisic/Ziyech right behind them. Havertz Kovacic and Kante in midfield. Who knows.

Whichever way, Chelsea going to have a banging attack next season. Goals galore!

If Werner is 10+ I will stay well clear. Wood, Jimenez Ings will be better options as well compared to Martial at 10+.

Martial will be sniffed at if his price is at 10.5. He will need to be one level up in performance as an FPL forward compared to Jimenez.

Brentford have reached the Championship Play Off Final after beating Swansea 3-1 (3-2). They will play either Cardiff or Fulham (first leg: 0-2).

                - Brentford G: Watkins, Marcondes, Mbeumo
                - Brentford A: Jensen, Benrahma, Henry
                - Benrahma best player on the pitch. Plays off the left: fantastic dribbler, good crosser and seemingly shots a fair bit.
                - Watkins impressive. CF who looks like a very good finisher and keeps going.
                - Brewster scored a very good consolation for Swansea and has done well since his loan there. I'd expect him to get a PL loan next summer so another potential enabler.

I'd love to see Brentford win the final. They were brilliant tonight and have a few interesting FPL options imo.

Considering the likes of Doherty and Van Dijk outscore their mid and forward price point counterparts I am strongly considering going 541 next season

                4.5 4
                TAA(8) Van Dijk(6.5) Doherty(6.5) 4.5 4.5
                De Bruyne(12) Fernandes(10)Pulisic(9)Greenwood(7.5) 4.5
                9.5 4.5 4.5

Obviously guesswork on prices and Greenwood but that would leave about 9.5 for a striker like Ings or Jimenez

                Thoughts?

There will be many fwd option next season, especially with reclasification options so only picking one may leave you behind.

Price difference with TAA and VvD probably 1 million imo. Not enough flexibility imo.

I actually did this strategy this season. The issue is you have one premium forward who you have/ want to keep swapping so no flexibility at all as a 4.5 player won’t play - I had greenwood and wickham who were sitting on the bench meaning I had to play my other cheap players every week.
Took ages to unwind, although I made it worse by having five Mid/ premium defenders (Vvd, robertson, digne, AWB, ake)

Buddy I personally wouldn't risk playing with 5 defenders as typically, as we all know, midfielders and forwards have greater upside potential. Plus, you never know with CS. You wouldn't want to put all your eggs in defense, that sort of tactic can come later down the line once you've established who's doing bits in defense over the course of the season. Implementing that approach from the get-go may leave you behind in your ML pal, that's what I think anyway. Best to keep up with the rest and build from there pal.

“... as we all know, midfielders and forwards have greater upside potential ...”. The mathematics of the last three years say otherwise. Could change though.

The key thing is that cheapies always emerge.

There will be at least one 4.5-5.5 mid that will have a blinder.

There will likely also be a striker at 5.0-6.5 that does the same.

                  And a 4.0 or 4.5 defender too.

Once the season really gets going, everyone will get them and then we’re back to the same old ‘should I get Auba/Kane/Aguero’?

Looks good to me (as long as Man Utd don't sign Sancho)! Think Ings/Jimenez will be 8.5-9, but you might need the extra money for Bruno, who could easily be 11. I do like the structure, and am thinking of something similar-ish, in a 532:

                  4.5, 4
                  TAA (8), Robbo (7), Maguire (5.5), Digne (5.5), Ayling/Dallas (5)
                  Salah (12.5), KDB (12), Sterling/Bruno (11.5), 4.5, 4.5
                  Adams (5.5), McBurnie (5.5), 4.5

Pulisic looked unplayable at times when he finally got going at Chelsea.

Letting Hazard go and replacing him with the American looks like a great bit of business now.
