The FPL players who could change position in 2020/21

The relaunch of Fantasy Premier League for 2020/21 will see the usual price swings for various players based on last season’s performances but will also feature positional reclassifications for a handful of them.

In this article, we’ll outline the case for a change of position for a number of Fantasy assets.

Ten players were reclassified at the beginning of last season, including Diogo Jota, Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie.

It’s fair to say that the alterations could be more seismic this summer, with a few premium assets potentially moving from midfielder to forward or vice-versa.

Before we begin, we should stress that this is purely guesswork on our part and is based on how FPL have gone about classifying players previously.

It could be, for example, that they have other ideas on how they will group ‘wide-midfielders’ next season – although, given the short turnaround, a complete overhaul of the game perhaps looks unlikely.

As a very rough guide, FPL have previously classified players using the following criteria:

DefendersCentre-backs, full-backs, wing-backs (eg in a 3-4-3/3-5-2)
MidfieldersCentral/defensive midfielders, number tens, wingers/wide-midfielders, players on either flank of a front three
ForwardsLone strikers, strikers who play in a two-man attack, the central striker in a three-man frontline

The classifications are typically based on what each player in question has done in the previous season.

Marcus Rashford and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, for example, had spent most of their time centrally in 2018/19, hence their listings as forwards at the start of the campaign just gone.

There is the occasional high-profile error (more of which below), of course, but these tend to be either academy products or fringe players from promoted clubs who were perhaps not given as much attention at the launch stage.

Only if Luiz played for wolves. Just seeing him on the team sheet helps your confidence.

Imagine a defence of Jones and Luiz with karius behind them

What captain would you pick with these or would you perma cap KDB

Captain KdB was a solid enough move last season. Played it quite a few times - not sure anyone is permacap material tbh really

His downside as a captain is the 5-0 against Brighton. Had him there. Called the result and ended up with a 3 pointer. That can happen with anyone of course but it feels more likely with him in some way - he doesn't do the tap ins in big results.

The upside is the Liverpool match. Also had him there - which turned out really well.

Not convinced I'll start with him given likely price tag but if I do I'll captain him when there's no one else with a really prime fixture. Not permacap - standby cap.

Yeah. All ifs and buts I suppose. If I capped him last year as I intended I would be 3k and not 30k. FFS made my mind up too often

Actively contemplating TAA as a captain next time

Just played it the once on FH last time. He is the 4th highest scorer in the game and has a decent haul record - not far behind the power mids at Liverpool. His blanking record is a touch better.

I've been looking at cs over the last 2 seasons and both City and Liverpool had a propensity to go a consistent run of cs. Once they got 2 in a row there was a decent likelihood of more following.

If you look past the fact that he's a defender there's nothing really to stop captain TAA in a favourable fixture and the team on a good run - just like any other pick really. There's a lower ceiling but that's it really.

      1. BNMC
        • 4 Years

Trent lower ceiling? If anything he's more consistent than Salah and Mane.

I will end up doing something unnecessary like:

      4.5, 4.0
      TAA, VVD, Robbo, 4.5, 4.5
      KDB, Bruno, Pulisic, 5.5, 4.5
      Ings, 5.5, 4.5

Have something similar in mind but more likely from WC than from week 1

Haven't analysed in any great detail but my theory is that Liverpool is a form defence. You triple up when they start to get cs rather than just rely on season value.

City too look as if they're a form defence from this season and last. Laporte isn't getting much of a mention but the City cs record with him last time was terrific. Very interested to see where he comes in at versus VVD. He'll miss more of course but that's what a 4.5 is there for.

        Sort of

Not sure on captaincy though. Easy to get over theoretical at this point and then when fixtures come out. Last season there was all sorts of runs people were planning - none of them panned out because Mo and Raz flopped early and Vardy happened,

Lucked out last season on captaincy - despite very poor start. Vardy turned it around, I just left it on him for 6/7 weeks when he couldn't miss. I didn't get hauls elsewhere but I always got tidy returns.

Not saying that we'll get another Vardy next time just that it makes sense to go flexible and not overplay around a rotation.

i can see 10+, new big name players always command a high price

10 would be too high for first season

we'll see, but big reputation normally means high price, he is a goal machine

      Sounds about right

Unproven in premier league and rotation risk

Interesting how they'll price him. Hope he'll be no more than 9.0, not sure how many would own straight away if the price is higher. People don't trust new arrivals. Pulisic and Bruno were kindly priced this season for example.

also FPL will be acutely aware that with so many players from this season whose prices will shoot up, creating a team will be toughest to date in FPL.

Also, I don't know why so many here are skeptical, mentioning Morata and Higuain as examples of failed Chelsea strikers. I'm no football/tactics expert, but Werner seems to me like Vardiesque kind of striker, with pace, also look at Salah's debut prem season. I'm very interested, but need to see how other factors will fall into place.

And pulisic and Bruno were both underpriced. Hope FPL learn...

10.5m minimum. I would argue 11.0m given his record in Germany.

He's only hit 20+ goals in a season twice in 7 seasons. Not amazing.

Should be 10.0. better be on the safe side and make sure he's not underpriced

i don't like to see any player injured (well, a few exceptions maybe) but this could help Arsenal, Azpi probably Chelsea's most consistent defender (apart from the penalty he just conceded lol)

So the only two fantasy relevant assets are the only two players to, so far, get returns in this game.
