Captain Sensible

Who are the best Captain options for FPL Blank Gameweek 1?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the new campaign’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Quite an unprecedented 2020/2021 pre-season is drawing to a close, as we are eagerly waiting for the new FPL campaign to start. Hundreds of drafts, multiple formations, Wildcard strategies and planning early transfers; we have all been there and, in fact, we are all living in this world right now.

There is one common denominator in our efforts; trying to find the best captain. Getting the right skipper is usually a crucial component to having a successful season and Fantasy managers are looking to start the campaign strongly with the right choice. Let’s evaluate the options available for us in Gameweek 1.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)  tops the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll with 53.3% of votes, as he faces a newly-promoted Fulham side in Gameweek 1.

The Arsenal striker, who has been reclassified as a midfielder for this season’s edition of FPL, is currently owned by 44.1% of Fantasy managers – which is more than the combined ownership of Sadio Mané (£12.0m, 13.3% ownership) and Mohammed Salah (£12.0m, 29.8% ownership).

The Gabonese international starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory two weeks ago (scoring a long-distance goal in a 1-1 draw that the Gunners won on penalties) and then netted twice in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Aston Villa behind-closed-doors.

Aubameyang’s great form is accompanied by a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture too, as Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities are still fresh in people’s minds from the 2018/19 campaign. The Cottagers conceded a league-high of 81 goals the last time they were in the top flight, which included nine goals over two games against Arsenal (5-1 and 4-1 defeats).

Metrics

The second most popular pick for the armband among the Fantasy Football Scout users this week is Salah (25.6%). Considering that the runaway 2019/20 champions are hosting newly-promoted Leeds United, and Manchester City and Manchester United are without a fixture, it seems to some extent surprising that the Fantasy-proven Egyptian midfielder is struggling to attract more interest for the armband.

Even more of a surprise, Mané sits at third in the poll with only 3.9% of votes. The Senegalese winger, who scored 18 goals and provided 10 Fantasy assists last season, showed glimpses of class in pre-season and will be looking to improve on his impressive home record against newly-promoted opposition on Saturday.

Behind the podium we can find Chelsea’s new striker Timo Werner (£9.5m, 3.5% of votes), Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m, 2.1%), as well as Tottenham Hotspur assets – Son Heung-min (£9.5, 2.1%) and Harry Kane (£10.5m, 1.8%).

Based on the poll, the main decision managers will have to make regarding captaincy will involve comparing Aubameyang with Salah. We will therefore mostly focus on the Liverpool and Arsenal options.

I've currently got Son in my team. Considering dropping him due Kanes effect on him.

Who would you recommend putting in instead?

I'm thinking Havertz, Rodriguez, Pulisic but want to see how they adapt to the PL/See if he's fully fit first.

I have Doherty and TAA so it's tough to say, I like both the pool and spurs backline. I think Robbo is safer, you can wait and see on Doh if he is playing as attacking for Spurs as he was Wolves.

Now I see he’s back in training and handed the number 10 shirt I’m seriously considering going Salah-less and having Puli-KDB-Bruno-Foden and using the extra funds to upgrade Mitrovic and bring in Robbo alongside TAA.

He is an unproven entity, there is risk but if he pops off, it will be tough to get him in if you don't start with him. If he fails, easy downgrade to Ings, Jimmy, DCL, Wilson, etc...

Leaning towards starting without yeah, but not 100%

He seemed to be very streaky last season - was always either on a streak of blanks, or a streak of destruction

      E.g. GW4-9 last season 1 goal & 5 blanks in 6 fixtures

Then 20 returns in his next 9 games (14G 6A)

Then 7 blanks in the next 8 games etc etc

I just don’t know how fast he’ll adapt - and even if he does - he showed last season he thinks nothing of going very quiet for 5,6,7 games - then exploding to catch it all back up again - a blank vs Brighton would put the cat amongst the pigeons

He also got 9 attacking returns in 2 games vs Mainz last season (6G 3A) so if you can find a premier league team that play like Mainz you probably want to be thinking about capping him...

United u21s smashed League 2 side Salford, 0-6.

    That's actually quite impressive.

Some real talent coming through soon. Ethan Laird and Teden Mengi probably the next two to make it in the first team. But Hannibal Mejbri is the one I'm excited about. Not as good as Greenwood, I don't think I've ever seen an academy player as good as he was, or ever will again, but Hannibal's very good.

Agree with Mark on Blackbox. This season's GW1 draft is the most difficult I think I've ever done. Last year I don't remember it being nearly as hard. Decide on a few guys (get them wrong) but the core structure was set early and I never wavered.

Template is still very much there. In some ways I think it's made it easier as you know you're going to have Auba, Salah/Mane, TAA, Werner (in most cases).

GW2/GW3 will be the true start to the season, it will be interesting to see who jumps early on the City/United boys and if it pays off.

Auba’s record post-restart was pretty vintage Auba when you look at it:

    10 games
    7 blanks
    5 goals
    2 assist

4G 2A in two games (Norwich & Watford home)... plus 1G vs Leciester... then 7 blanks in the other 7 games

(Those 7 games did include Man City, Wolves, Spurs, Liverpool to be fair... but also included brighton, Southampton & Villa)

He really did love playing Norwich & Watford though - 8 goals & 2 assists vs them in 4 games last year - compared to 14 goals & 3 assists in his other 32 appearances last year

Part of the reason why I switched captaincy to Salah.

Ironic how both have flaws though.

The last time he played Fulham away, I stopped playing FPL for the season because I took him out. I’m not making that mistake this week and he’s locked in as my captain.

I remember that weirdly - he’d had a very difficult start to the season & had blanked at home to Watford the previous game so emery benched him for Fulham

Then came on in 62nd minute to score a brace & assist lol... then was benched the next game vs Leciester & came on late to score a brace again

        Mad

And I took him out for Kane. It made me question why I play FPL as an Arsenal fan doing that. Then he hauled again the week after, so I just stopped for the season. Was my worst FPL moment lol

He was apparently injured for Fulham and then came on and did that. I was saving him as my differential to captain him.

Auba, burned me so bad last year. Owned him instead of Mane (my ml rival has Mane), TC the week of covid so I got one match 2 points, and captained him loads of times at the end of the season... that being said, I'm going C Auba and praying he rewards me otherwise this may be my quickest exit from fpl ever lol.

    McCarthy 4.0m
    TAA Saiss Justin Ayling Mitchell
    Aubameyang Son Havertz Saint-Maximin Reed
    Werner Ings Wilson
    2.0 itb for flexibility.
    Good luck all.

Similar to my team except your Wilson/Havertz becomes Vardy/Saka for me. I've also got £2M ITB for loads of week 2 transfer options.

Nice to have that flexibility, thinking of Wilson to Jiminez gw3 or might just go with him from the off. Best of luck with your season.

Funny I have also been toying with him a lot in my drafts recently. My only doubt is the introduction of Willian. Laca still isn’t sold so I just wonder how much Eddie will feature. £6m could be a bargain though!

We can’t bench him tbh when he cost us that much. He had glimpses of brilliance last season and was so good in the cup final. I have a feeling he’s going to start well.

Does his price tag really matter? He’s just not good enough compared to other options.

Saka Nketiah Auba Laca Willian are surely all ahead of him.

I’m no Arsenal fan, nor am I up to date on latest team news. Just my eye test.

He is our best winger bud. He didn't have a proper proper run in the team last season. Was getting benched a lot under Emery and Arteta when he first came. Hazard and Mahrez struggled in their first seasons remember in the PL. Pepe will come good

    McCarthy
    Tierny Dier WP
Auba (c) Salah St Maximan Son
    Werner Antonio Ings

    Steer Hojberg Ayling Ferguson

Too much Southampton. Don’t really like McCarthy but he’s the best of the 4.5m
