The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

Experts, what we thinking here? Safe play is to save and have two FTs for the IB. But both moves really tempt me too. Any insight? Cheers 🙂

    A. Werner >> Jimenez / DCL
    B. Davies >> James / Lamptey
    C. Save FT

    McCarthy
    TAA, Saiss, Justin, Davies
    Salah, KDB, Rodríguez, Zaha
    Werner, Ings
    (Nyland, Bissouma, Mitchell, Davis)

      C. There will be plenty of uncertainty over the IB with Covid and injuries and it will be great to have 2FTs

I don't rate James as a long term option. He will soon start sharing a lot more minutes with Azpi. Lamptey is a gem, but there is transfer talk to Bayern (not sure how definite that is). Prefer Lamptey out of those 2. Semedo is a good alternative as well if you could stretch that far.

Could be wrong but I don't see Davies starting, so I'd be tempted to make that switch.

I also think he might miss out. Or move into a back 3 possibly? Don’t really want another defensive move, is James or Lamptey worth it?

Yeah, hard to know what Jose has lined up. Long term I see them playing a 4-3-3, but at United, could well be a three. Maybe save then mate and reassess over the break.

Yes. Too many possibilities during the IB - injuries, COVID scares, probable cancellations due to COVID, etc. 2 FTs + a hit (if required) can easily help you put out a great team in GW5; almost a mini WC. Play Davies this week with Bissouma first bench.

For me, C. Werner->Jimi could pay off, but there's no reason Werner can't score this week either - unless he's ruled out ofc. Jimi's best 2 fixtures are after this GW.

If Davies doesn't play, having Bissouma off the bench isn't the worst outcome; B would improve the team, but it's not necessary this week IMO.

Actually, realise I mis-read the fixtures. It's Wolves v Fulham this week, then Leeds v Wolves, then Wolves v Newcastle. Over the same 3 Werner has CRY/SOU/mun. Werner->Jimi for those 3 is more tempting. The problem is that neither side has much consistent form to go on, really...

Are you a Werner owner? Interesting to see if there’s any subconscious bias.

For me, Crystal Palace are probably the most organised defensive block in the league. There certainly won’t be any space in behind which immediately negates Werner’s greatest strength.

Conversely, Jimenez is up against the worst team in the Prem so far. The only risk there is that Wolves have had changes to both wingback positions and may take time to click.

Yes, I am, so there will be bias (as there always is)! Your points are good ones, but I think Chelsea have potential to be very attacking if they can click and Wolves haven't shown great form yet.

There is definitely some doubt over whether he starts. Wolves fans seem to want Samedo on that side with Hoever coming in on the right, or praying that Marcal recovers.

My guess would be 80/20 he plays.

      1. FPLShaqiri
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Yeah this is the annoying part - even if Nuno says Marcal is out then I can still see a situation where Vinagre is dropped after the shocker vs WHU - 80/20 seems about right.

Ayling and Ferguson my only back up and probably won't want to play either in GW5 either so might be worth sorting Vinagre out now. Will see what Nuno says...

Looks fine, but don’t like Salah (c).

-Villa were narrow games last season and started well this time.
      - Salah played last night (maybe early sub, especially if winning)
      - debatable about away / home but Salah historically is poorer away

City won 8-0 after first loss last season, KDB did get 60 mins too, Leeds are suicidal gung-ho.

      KDB over Salah

If you had son / richarlison and had made early transfers this week you’d be in a bit of trouble.

Thoughts on what to do with Werner:

    A) Nothing. Hold, hope he can finally return against Palace and bank 2FT for after the International break
    B) Werner -> Ings to target WBA fixture
    C) Werner -> Maupay - BHA looking good going forward, on Pens, fixtures not too bad
    D) Werner + Podence/Pereira -> Maupay + Mahrez for -4 (RMT rates these moves highly!)

Villa is a tough game historically and form wise let alone with a hit for Salah on top

Have a feeling Wilder is rather desperate and is putting in a lot of faith in Brewster after his side's defensive performances and lack of goals. Rhian's got the credentials, U17 WC Golden Boot and scored the 2nd most goals in the Championship after joining Swansea if I remember correctly.

    1. Sun Jihai

Yeah, we're desperate - Mousset is injured and Sharp/McGoldrick 34 and 32 now.
But hopefully a decent signing - the alternative was Watkins who went to Villa for 28m+

Wouldn't be surprised if Wilder's nervous about relegation, at least West Brom and Fulham look like early certainties. I assume Watkins would have been preferred by most but Brewster has the quality to make it work.
