Gerard Houllier returns to Anfield and watches on while his Villa side are swept aside by a ruthlessly efficient Liverpool display. Here’s the notes on the final encounter of the Gameweek…

Roy Hodgson put out a predictable Liverpool lineup, with one major exception, Fernando Torres was given compassionate leave after his wife went into labour, so Ryan Babel was handed the opportunity to partner David Ngog in attack. At the beginning of the evening then, Liverpool fans would have questioned whether they would have the cutting edge to see off Villa; as it turned out Babel and Ngog were to combine to great effect.

While Babel’s smartly taken goal is unlikely to see him retain a starting role, Ngog looks a better prospect. His opener, coupled with the assist for Maxi’s third, was rewarded with the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points and, at just 4.8, in that game, it might well be enough for him to start earning some attention. Ngog has started the last 3 matches under Hodgson and could well be alongside the returning Torres against at Newcastle this weekend.

The return of Steven Gerrard is of course the major caveat to Ngog’s potential as a budget signing. The Liverpool skipper may well be in the frame for the trip to St James’ Park and with Joe Cole also a factor, Ngog’s starting role is far from secure.

Liverpool kept a second clean sheet in 3 league games and have now kept 4 in their last 7, conceding just 5 goals in that run. Clearly there are shoots of progress in this area then, and with fixtures continuing to smile on Hodgson’s men, a move for either Sotirios Kyrgiakos or Paul Konchesky, looks a wise investment. Kyrgiakos was subbed late on but there no apparent injury sustained. We will of course monitor that situation going into the weekend in case there was a complication for the Greek.

The form of Maxi Rodriquez is also worth noting. At 6.7 in the FPL, Rodriguez has returned 3 goals in his last 7 league starts, throwing in 3 Bonus Points along the way. He and Raul Meireles, who was again impressive, have prospered in the Liverpool midfield in the absence of Gerrard, offering mid-price prospects for those looking to buy into Liverpool’s attacking potential lower down the price bracket.

Villa were bitterly disappointing and the Gerard Houllier dissenters are now swelling in numbers. The Villa bos was able to call on Marc Alrighton in the absence of the suspended Ashley Young, after he made a speedy return from an appendicitis, but his trickery had little bearing on a match that passed by the visitors within 16 minutes following the two goal salvo from Ngog and Babel.

Villa’s Fantasy prospects look pretty grim. They’ve now shipped 14 goals in their last 6 league matches without a clean sheet, and while they’ve found the next 8 times in that run, they are clearly struggling for stability and fluidity in their lineup. Albrighton, as a 4.6 option in midfield, looks the only prospect worthy of consideration. While Ashley Young will return from his ban to face West Brom at the weekend, Houllier will be without Ciaran Clark who picked up his fifth booking in last night’s game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on these options would be very appreciated:

    Cole A replaced by Hangeland
    Elmohamady replaced by Bardsley

    or

    Elmohamady replaced by Bardsley
    Parker replaced by Lee

    or

    Parker replaced by Malouda
    Torres replaced by Elmander

    or
    Parker replaced by Etherington
    Torres replaced by Elmander

    or

    Cole A replaced by Konchesky

Won't Torres have to take 'paternity leave'?
          I was gutted last night.
Elmo's got to come out, any ideas who for?
Bardsley would be good, but Sunderland away this week?

Hey Richard, fancy seeing you here!

I don't think footballers stick to normal paternity leave rules. Most of them just want to play football, whereas most of us would jump at the chance of two weeks off work. I'd leave Torres in, Liverpool have good fixtures coming up.

Should I get rid of Mummy or Alex first with my free transfer this week? Also potential replacements for both? Double up on Reds defenders maybe in Alex's case, so Konchesky and Skrtel?

Probably Alex, frees up more cash and at least Mummy will get one point if for some reason you have to play him.

I never like the idea of doubling up on a defence. There's some decent defensive options; Samba or Baines perhaps?

Piq started on the bench, so I'm worried he's out of favour. I know a West Ham fan who seems to think he's sh*te.

Torres is, as always a risk, but with Liverpool's fixtures I think he's worth it.

With VDV also back in, I could downgrade Drogba later to bring Lampard in, that would be an option.

    My team is:
    1: Foster
    2: Cole A
    3: Samba
    4: Jagielka
    5: Nani
    6: Nasri
    7: Cahill
    8: Bale
    9: Torres
    10: Carroll
    11: Berbatov

    Subs
    12: Carson
    13: Parker
    14: Dann
    15: Elmohamady

I would go Cahill if I had him. Nani/berb worth looking at.

I'm looking at Cahill, Nani and Elmander as possible captains for this week if that helps

Not Nasri? He tore up Fulham's defence and could do the same to United's.
I'm wary of Cahill. He's not scored above 10 in a gameweek at all this season. Nani or Berbs could offer better returns... oh god I hate the indecision this game encourages.

cahill, bale or nani for deffo. cahill is prob been in the best form last two weeks so be tough to continue, bale has chelsea and nani has had a rest but will prob play midweek against valencia. all things considered id go for nani

First of all i was gutted about the Toress incident, but yeah atleast i got the points for berb on the bench.... Ohh yeah.

Secondly I know this sounds nuts but for this week should i play Jara over Vidic as united are unlikely to keep a cleanie? And brom looked strong as did villa weak this week?

    Thoughts please

Nuts. WBA only had 1 cleanie or season I think. Vidic an attacking threat

We haven't beat Villa in like 30 years.. Although I might just play Jara this week and hope, if I decide not to make a transfer.

We never beat them though, and I'm not exaggerating. You could hope for a 0-0, as we sometimes get a draw..

I seriously reckon you have a chance. WBA look like they have goals in them with Brunt and odem. Villa look terrible, A Young will make a difference though. Will be a good game.

Yeah should be goals hence why it would be a bad idea to play Jara, but I might have to anyway.. I'm 18 and my best memory of us against Villa was when Paul Robinson scored in the last minute at Villa Park to get a 1-1, was in the Great Escape season.

I have Vidic I doubt I'll ever drop him. He's 'fixture proof' and reckon he may score a header vs Arsenal.

I am going to bring in the big Serb but feel Baines is due for a higher score not worth a 4 point hit for Vida is it?

If England bowler James Anderson can fly to England for the birth of his child and be back in time for the next test, I would hope Torres can tear himself away from bottle (or breast) feeding duties to make it to Newcastle for the weekend.

    Thinking

    Carrol > Balotelli
    Lee > DeJong

    or

    Torres > Balotelli
    Lee > Silva

    or

    Lee > Dejong
just for Citeh cover as Kolarov is suspended... De Jong is too defensive but might also get a clean sheet I guess.

Help would be appreciated. I have compulsive-transferitis Disorder.

I hate all those options with a passion.

Why would you ship Torres ahead of a favourable run of games or Lee before he plays Blackburn at home.

You make way way way too many transfers! 42 is double what most people on here will have done and it's affecting your ranking. Your team is in good condition, don't make any transfers!!!

Haha yeah blummin fiddling at the edges - I'll sit tight though the anxiety of not bringing in cover for City is troubling me.

had a horrific GW 16 auto captain went to Carrol over Nasri so have complained. Compulsive Tranferitis and Torres' wife shafted me.

these are truly shocking. picking de jong because he might get a clean sheet? that's 1 point, the same 1 point he regularly loses for a yellow cards. has he ever got an assist or a goal? the one without de jong looks crazy too, torres is just coming up to his good run of games and silva and balotelli will find it hard to wrestle points off target man, bonus babe and penalty taking tevez

Who are you brining in SD? I can actually do Drogba & Carroll > Rooney & Torres although it will leave me nothing in the bank and 4 points lighter. Probably not worth it given their form

          Drogba > Torres.

Don't think it is worth having all Drogba, Torres & Tevez personally, I would rather save the money for when Fabregas gets back or something.
