Gerard Houllier returns to Anfield and watches on while his Villa side are swept aside by a ruthlessly efficient Liverpool display. Here’s the notes on the final encounter of the Gameweek…

Roy Hodgson put out a predictable Liverpool lineup, with one major exception, Fernando Torres was given compassionate leave after his wife went into labour, so Ryan Babel was handed the opportunity to partner David Ngog in attack. At the beginning of the evening then, Liverpool fans would have questioned whether they would have the cutting edge to see off Villa; as it turned out Babel and Ngog were to combine to great effect.

While Babel’s smartly taken goal is unlikely to see him retain a starting role, Ngog looks a better prospect. His opener, coupled with the assist for Maxi’s third, was rewarded with the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points and, at just 4.8, in that game, it might well be enough for him to start earning some attention. Ngog has started the last 3 matches under Hodgson and could well be alongside the returning Torres against at Newcastle this weekend.

The return of Steven Gerrard is of course the major caveat to Ngog’s potential as a budget signing. The Liverpool skipper may well be in the frame for the trip to St James’ Park and with Joe Cole also a factor, Ngog’s starting role is far from secure.

Liverpool kept a second clean sheet in 3 league games and have now kept 4 in their last 7, conceding just 5 goals in that run. Clearly there are shoots of progress in this area then, and with fixtures continuing to smile on Hodgson’s men, a move for either Sotirios Kyrgiakos or Paul Konchesky, looks a wise investment. Kyrgiakos was subbed late on but there no apparent injury sustained. We will of course monitor that situation going into the weekend in case there was a complication for the Greek.

The form of Maxi Rodriquez is also worth noting. At 6.7 in the FPL, Rodriguez has returned 3 goals in his last 7 league starts, throwing in 3 Bonus Points along the way. He and Raul Meireles, who was again impressive, have prospered in the Liverpool midfield in the absence of Gerrard, offering mid-price prospects for those looking to buy into Liverpool’s attacking potential lower down the price bracket.

Villa were bitterly disappointing and the Gerard Houllier dissenters are now swelling in numbers. The Villa bos was able to call on Marc Alrighton in the absence of the suspended Ashley Young, after he made a speedy return from an appendicitis, but his trickery had little bearing on a match that passed by the visitors within 16 minutes following the two goal salvo from Ngog and Babel.

Villa’s Fantasy prospects look pretty grim. They’ve now shipped 14 goals in their last 6 league matches without a clean sheet, and while they’ve found the next 8 times in that run, they are clearly struggling for stability and fluidity in their lineup. Albrighton, as a 4.6 option in midfield, looks the only prospect worthy of consideration. While Ashley Young will return from his ban to face West Brom at the weekend, Houllier will be without Ciaran Clark who picked up his fifth booking in last night’s game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Guys, this is my team....

    Foster Jaaskelinen
    Dann Kolorov Vidic Jones Simpson
    Etherington MGP N’Zogbia Nani Nasri
    Elmander Drogba Carroll

I'm thinking of bringing in the likes of Torres and Tevez/Balotelli in the next two gameweeks seem a good idea?

But does anyone think i should invest in the Liverpool's defence (Konchesky or Kyriakos) for gameweek 18 and maybe take out dann to avoid doubling up on birmingham's defence?

So thinking of Elmander to Balotelli this week as Tevez is crying about something or other.

    Good Move?

If so would he be a viable (C) ?

    Morning all
Egypt have a great conspiracy theory on the go at the moment
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/1343/Egypt/Politics-/Experts-shoot-down-theory-that-Israel-is-behind-sh.aspx
They believe Israel are controlling sharks via GPS to attack tourists in Egyptian waters.
To be fair though Mossad are possibly behind Mike Ashley's decision yesterday, and the birth of baby Torres. There is nothing they wont stoop to. 🙂

I noticed your little battle with Yas yesterday.

He's totally wrong about the players not liking Hughton. I remember once reading about Hughton having a 'suggestion box' that players could add their views on how they'd like things to be done and this helped his management style and made everyone feel that they were contributing towards the common goal of getting Newcastle promoted last season and staying up this season.

I think i'd rather have Gerrard for the Newcastle game but after that i think Torres looks the man to have for their Anfield fixtures.

Neither look THAT attractive for this GW even if Newcastle are in a bit of disarray

I have Piq instead of Tevez but think I'll be keeping Drogba this week. If anybody is leaving it'll be Piq > Torres.

The thing that worries me - Torres is much better at home than he is away, so waiting until GW18 where Liverpool have 3 home games in 4, seems a better choice, unless I'm convinced otherwise.

I think Copenhagen is a good shout. They are really good in the league (leading by 19 points and won 16 draw 3 lost 0). Panatinaikos have lost/drawn all their CL matches, and nothing to play for. Copenhagen also have massive support from the crowd at home. Don't know the odds though..

For all of you who own Foster, are you playing him most GWs or still wanting someone who rotates well with him?

I currently have Krul and Begovic/Foster rotate well together. Krul's positon will be in doubt when Harper comes back, but maybe Begovic's is too with Sorensen?

I think the question you have to ask is this? If you had Cech, would you rotate him? If the answer is no, then why rotate Foster? He scores about the same as Cech.

When I had Foster (he went in my wildcard), I didn't play him in a number of away matches in which he got clean sheets. I think he's like Sorensen last season. If you've got him, you have to play him.

I disagree. There are affordable keepers out there who will pick up points, so it's worth having two as it gives you options. For instance, in the weekend just gone, if I had to play Foster he would only have got me 3 points, whereas Robbo got me 9.

Haha, well spotted! On the whole though, I've got more points from rotating the two rather than playing Foster every week.

You have to have 2 keepers anyway, and I think it's more worthwhile to spend an extra 0.5mil or so to have two decent ones than rely on just one and have a £3.9m keeper making up the numbers. Each to their own though, it would be boring if we all thought the same!

        totally agree,

      zizou about messi:
"We have no goal tomorrow because we've already completed our task," Guardiola said on Monday, according to Uefa.com.

"We've done the job and qualified and nobody can take that away from us. Out of respect for the public we'll try to play a good, dynamic football and create as many chances as possible."

However, Guardiola did suggest that Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta could make an appearance, saying : "We were also going to rest Iniesta and Messi as well as Xavi but as the B team also have an important match this week, we couldn't take any more players from them so Messi and Iniesta won't rest."

Arsenal team looks spot on enought, they will want to get a few goals in that game, that looks like the exact same Chelsea side that played in the last UCL game, but with Essien/Anelka back, I am not sure that is how they will line up again to be honest, despite not having to field a full side, unfortunate that both games are tomorrow night, we get to see alot of teams before the deadline tonight

Decent-ish gameweek for me, but i'm a bit lost as to where to go from here with my defence. Especially since Andy Carroll and Kyrgiakos could end up cancelling each other out at the weekend.

I cant see my Man Utd and Chelsea defenders getting me much either

I want to hold on to Kyrgiakos as they've got a great run of fixtures, i could just live with it for this week and swap Simpson for Huth (1.3m in the bank) - i could also ship out one of the Chelski defs, but who for?

Yep, my faith in Chelsea has now officially expired. Took me 10 gameweeks to get rid of Drogba. He served me well last year so i was always thinking "i'll give him another week"

Tripling up on Man U defs/keeper last year got me mega points through that clean sheet run, just a shame everyone is so inconsistent this time around. Makes the game more interesting though

I'd be inclined to stick with Cole out of the Chelski three due to the possibility of goals, assists and BP

So the possibilities are (rough ideas)

        Terry > Baines
Cech > Harte (decent clean sheet record, plus defence can be dodgy at times, so chance of saves)
Terry > Skrtel (nice fixtures but might be a risk doubling up on 'pool)

Yeah it's tricky that there are no consistent defences this season, but does make it more interesting. I think City is the only defence I'd consider doubling up on at the moment.

Yep, Terry - Baines and Cech - Hart were the ones I was thinking of. Think one of those at least is a priority for you this week.

True. You could switch Terry to Kolarov - play Kyrgi, Cole, Vidic this week. That would also free up some money from your defence which I think you have overspent on a bit.

Just a shame that Kompany is classed as a Mid as i'd definitely give him a go. If my maths is right, he'd have another 24 points on his total for CS's if he was a Def

I know its been said but ever a better a time to get Torres?

Good fixtures and up against an out of form team that have lost their manager and without Nolan/Barton/Coloc. Torres will surely want to put a couple in the onion bag for his newly born.

Just a shame it's an away fixture.

Bollocks, need a bit of help here. If you check my team, you'll see I have Kolorov, Tevez, Coleman and Cahill as potential doubts.

Now, I'd quite like to swap coleman for Kyageros(sp) but I'm .1m short.

And my Transfer next week was to be Cahill to VdV.

So that leaves me with needing a 4pt hit to get rid of either Tevez or Kolorov, whom I actually want to keep.

Can anybody think of any thing clever I can do? I can't have 4 non-players.

Is that supposed to be English?
Do you hope he is back? Or do you hope his back is ok? Because there is nothing wrong with his back, it was a shoulder injury.

as you may have gathered I am a Sunderland fan but I am a bit of a fan of all the North East clubs.....this banter is all a bit tongue in cheek!! I have even got Williamson in my team (albeit begrudgingly!!)

AH! You're a Sunderland fan! That's honestly completely different then, I thought you were just a random tw@t like Jas, but you are well entitled to banter and slagging with no hard feelings.
Do continue - I promise I wont pull out the 5under1and gags for a while 😉

Krul is a decent backup but we really have missed Harper. Krul is Newcastle's 3rd best keeper.

Harper is 2nd best, 1st would be the guy that Mike Ashley didn't buy because he is such a terrible owner.
