Gerard Houllier returns to Anfield and watches on while his Villa side are swept aside by a ruthlessly efficient Liverpool display. Here’s the notes on the final encounter of the Gameweek…

Roy Hodgson put out a predictable Liverpool lineup, with one major exception, Fernando Torres was given compassionate leave after his wife went into labour, so Ryan Babel was handed the opportunity to partner David Ngog in attack. At the beginning of the evening then, Liverpool fans would have questioned whether they would have the cutting edge to see off Villa; as it turned out Babel and Ngog were to combine to great effect.

While Babel’s smartly taken goal is unlikely to see him retain a starting role, Ngog looks a better prospect. His opener, coupled with the assist for Maxi’s third, was rewarded with the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points and, at just 4.8, in that game, it might well be enough for him to start earning some attention. Ngog has started the last 3 matches under Hodgson and could well be alongside the returning Torres against at Newcastle this weekend.

The return of Steven Gerrard is of course the major caveat to Ngog’s potential as a budget signing. The Liverpool skipper may well be in the frame for the trip to St James’ Park and with Joe Cole also a factor, Ngog’s starting role is far from secure.

Liverpool kept a second clean sheet in 3 league games and have now kept 4 in their last 7, conceding just 5 goals in that run. Clearly there are shoots of progress in this area then, and with fixtures continuing to smile on Hodgson’s men, a move for either Sotirios Kyrgiakos or Paul Konchesky, looks a wise investment. Kyrgiakos was subbed late on but there no apparent injury sustained. We will of course monitor that situation going into the weekend in case there was a complication for the Greek.

The form of Maxi Rodriquez is also worth noting. At 6.7 in the FPL, Rodriguez has returned 3 goals in his last 7 league starts, throwing in 3 Bonus Points along the way. He and Raul Meireles, who was again impressive, have prospered in the Liverpool midfield in the absence of Gerrard, offering mid-price prospects for those looking to buy into Liverpool’s attacking potential lower down the price bracket.

Villa were bitterly disappointing and the Gerard Houllier dissenters are now swelling in numbers. The Villa bos was able to call on Marc Alrighton in the absence of the suspended Ashley Young, after he made a speedy return from an appendicitis, but his trickery had little bearing on a match that passed by the visitors within 16 minutes following the two goal salvo from Ngog and Babel.

Villa’s Fantasy prospects look pretty grim. They’ve now shipped 14 goals in their last 6 league matches without a clean sheet, and while they’ve found the next 8 times in that run, they are clearly struggling for stability and fluidity in their lineup. Albrighton, as a 4.6 option in midfield, looks the only prospect worthy of consideration. While Ashley Young will return from his ban to face West Brom at the weekend, Houllier will be without Ciaran Clark who picked up his fifth booking in last night’s game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Nice that liverpool are climbing steadily, might have to look into the team for potential bargains.

Suggestions for improvements / changes for GW17 please?

    Hart (Carson)
    CAshley Distin Dann (Carr Simpson)
    Nasri Nani Fabs Jarvis Bale
    Carroll Elmander (Tevez)

I have benched Tevez as he is suspended and put Fabs back in as he is a maybe to play against Utd..

Can anyone suggest any transfers which would improve my lineup?

    Ta!

I'm seriously considering the following for 4 points:

    A Cole and Tevez OUT
    Skrtel and Torres IN

Gambling on Liverpool making the most of their kind fixtures. Leaves me plenty of money to get Tevez back in for Davies next week.

Good point.. I may go with Kyrgiakos in that case, he's arguably more of a goal threat anyway although I don't expect him to keep his place when Agger returns.

One of the defendants has accused the husband of paying for the killing! And the husband's hired Max Clifford as a publicist.... it does seem off that nothing was stolen, the husband was let go and there was no sign of s£xual assault...

I noticed your little battle with Yas yesterday.

He’s totally wrong about the players not liking Hughton. I remember once reading about Hughton having a ‘suggestion box’ that players could add their views on how they’d like things to be done and this helped his management style and made everyone feel that they were contributing towards the common goal of getting Newcastle promoted last season and staying up this season.

Cahill scored the winning goal at Eastlands between Everton and City last season so to say our next decent game is the 26th is short sighted of you.

      about messi:
"We have no goal tomorrow because we've already completed our task," Guardiola said on Monday, according to Uefa.com.

"We've done the job and qualified and nobody can take that away from us. Out of respect for the public we'll try to play a good, dynamic football and create as many chances as possible."

However, Guardiola did suggest that Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta could make an appearance, saying : "We were also going to rest Iniesta and Messi as well as Xavi but as the B team also have an important match this week, we couldn't take any more players from them so Messi and Iniesta won't rest."

as eto'o will play since he is suspended in seria a atm...
nani n ivanovic should play as well since saf said he will play his best team ag valencia n chelsea are short of cb's...

Does anyone think theres any truth in my theory that matthew upson feigns injury. If his team start looking like getting a hammering (bad pun intended) he goes off so he cant take the blame. Or likewise if they take an early lead that inevitably wont last against tough opposition he does the same so he can say 'well lads when i was on the pitch we were winning' this is kind of tongue in cheek but not entirely

Is Malouda likely to be suspended? What was his 'slap' like?

although it was a bit of a leg lunge and slap combo so they might see it as a double attack 🙂

Etherington is worth the hit in my opinion. As for taking a hit for a defender away from home in a derby, I'm not sure that is wise. Jones is on my bench this weekend for a reason: Bolton WILL score.

I still think it's worth the hit. Why did you completely ignore the guys second transfer by the way? Is it because you happen to be a Blackburn supporter who knows it would be ridiculous to play a Blackburn defender against Bolton away who like to score lots of goals this season?

When they were managed by your anti-football manager, yeah. These days they have a manager in Owen Coyle who actually tries to play the game on the floor, Bolton don't hit the ball into the box and hope anymore.

How long have you been watching football? A year or two? Allardyce wasn't the noblots manager for ANY of those Bolton - Blackburn games. Anyway this conversation is so boring it's actually depressing me so let's leave it here shall we...

Allardyce has been that way since he's been in football management. Newcastle fans couldn't stand his style, I bet Bolton fans are glad to see the back of him too. Also, if you are referring to Gary Megson, he is also very anti-football. Bolton and West Brom fans know this all too well. I honestly don't give two hoots if it's depressing you knowing Coyle has Bolton playing a more attractive game now. Did you see the build up play for Elmander's recent goal? Enough said.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has promised to field a full strength side against Valencia"

    So, the defensive line is going to be something like this;
    Evra - Vidic - Ferdinand - Rafael ??
