With another Gameweek down, we rule over the fixture list once again, seeking out those sides who appear to have a smooth passage through the festive period and those who may well suffer a rough route into 2011…

The Highs

Man City
Roberto Mancini’s side unleashed the shackles somewhat against Bolton at the weekend, peppering their opponents’ goal with efforts. This new emphasis on attack, coupled with a defence that has kept the most clean sheets in the league, is taken into a run of games that has them face kind opponents both at home and away over the coming weeks. Discount the potentially tricky Eastlands clash with Everton in Gameweek 18 and the next real test doesn’t arrive until Gameweek 22 with a trip to the Emirates. Once back from bans, both Carlos Tevez and Aleksandar Kolarov look irresistible targets for this spell, while David Silva must creep into the reckoning in midfield.

Liverpool
Even before last night’s Anfield clash with Villa, Roy Hodgson’s side look to have a set of fixtures that allow them to progress up the table over the Christmas period. With Steven Gerrard set to return, possibly by Gameweek 19 if not before, Liverpool should gain extra impetus and could fetch reasonable returns at both ends. A punt on Sotirios Kyrgiakos as a goal-getting Bonus magnet at the back for just 5.1 looks a particularly good option with Newcastle, Fulham and Wolves in the next four.

Everton
The hugely encouraging display at Stamford Bridge will provide plenty of confidence for an Everton side that has struggled for consistency. They will take that boost into a home clash with Wigan this weekend and follow that with a run that, a trip to Eastlands aside, appears to give them potential to climb up the table. Clean sheets continue to look a big ask for Moyes’ men but owners of Tim Cahill will likely be holding firm right up to his expected departure for the Asian Cup over Christmas.

Also Consider…
Tottenham – The home clash with Chelsea won’t intimidate an in-form Spurs and following that, trips to Blackpool and Villa offer plenty of goal potential. They are followed by home clashes with Newcastle and Fulham.

West Brom
– a strong performance against Newcastle will provide a timely boost ahead of derby matches at Birmingham and at home to Wolves. Such matches are hard to call but meetings with Blackburn and Fulham follow to extend a decent run for Di Matteo’s side.

Fulham – Mark Hughes’ outfit have little form to cling to but can at least take comfort in a fixture list that hands them three Craven Cottage clashes that could help them dig their way out of the mire.

The Lows…

Arsenal
While Samir Nasri’s form has sparkled brightly enough to mask the flaws in Arsene Wenger’s defence, the fixture list hands them a series of tough tests that may yet reveal them further. The trip to Old Trafford this coming Gameweek starts proceedings, while clashes with Stoke, Chelsea and City in the next six appear to afford little by way of home comforts – they will all severe tests for very different reasons. Trips to Wigan and Birmingham meanwhile, provide unpredictable opponents who could stretch Wenger’s men. The message appears to be keep Nasri, think twice about further investment.

Man United
Aside from City, these are testing times for the top four. United’s clash with Arsenal this weekend is hard to call but, if Alex Ferguson’s men falter, they will face severe tests against Chelsea at the Bridge, followed by uncomfortable tussles with Sunderland (who have already seen off Chelsea) and Birmingham at St Andrews. Attacking returns should keep flowing but clean sheets look endangered over that run of four.

Newcastle
The new manager won’t get any favours from the fixture list. This weekend’s home meeting with Liverpool will provide a stern enough test but that’s followed by a decidedly tricky trip to Birmingham with consecutive clashes with top four candidates in City and Spurs to come next. Wigan and West Ham wait for them on the other side but by then the Magpies could be in deeper trouble.

Be wary of…
Stoke – home encounters with Blackpool, Fulham and Everton look crucial over the coming weeks but their run of away games that appear to offer little by way of potential returns.

West Ham – Two more trips to Blackburn and Fulham seem likely to extend the Hammers run of miserable away days and they are sandwiched between tough home matches with City and Everton.

Birmingham – fail in the local derby with Wolves this coming Gameweek and they will face a pressure home game with Newcastle before embarking on a nightmare run consisting of a trip to Goodison and home matches with United and Arsenal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Foster (Robinson)

    Konchesky Rafael Foley (Williamson Kolarov)

    N'Zogbia Bale Etuhu Nasri Nani

    Elmander Torres (Tevez)

I know Utd vs Arsenal doesn't help my team and playing Foley isn't great but I'm thinking of this transfer. Tevez to Odem this week and then Elmander to Tevez next week. Would save me having to play Etuhu and give me a front 3 of Tevez Torres Odem from next week.

Or do we think I should do some other transfer first?

Williamson and Etuhu have to be priorities.

It NEVER pays off to get someone out for one week and then get him back. You're wasting 2 transfers that could be used to strengthen the rest of your team.

Keep fixing problems, getting out players who aren't playing/injured/out of form, and you'll be fine.

I just never understood why people find everything he says so very good.

Let's be honest, the French - like several other countries - have lived the good life and only worked until they're 60 years old and now when reality catches up on them they come up with these brilliant ideas.

I dont think you can generalize like that about the french,

For me I like him because he comes across as an articulate former footballer (one in a million) who actually cares about social reform.

Interesting side note ATM's in Ireland have stopped working for no reason today for Bank of Ireland it is being reported so people cant access their money.
            Conspiracy?

It's a generalization all right but it's some truth in it. Now the rest of Europe have had to step in while those countries have protested against the economic reforms placed on them, and they cry and riot and refuse to work and whatever because they have to work longer for their economy to work.

I do agree that the banks are very fishy though, and the idea is, as I said, interesting. But of course completely impossible to execute.

Regarding that Irish situation I have no idea what so ever. You better stick your hard worked cash under your pillow!

There is no work in Ireland!.. Thankfully im still doing some uni stuff and will be leaving to do more so enough next year.

Ireland paid too much on public sector pay.
                Didnt regulate the banks
People got money who couldnt got it bank
Government encouraged it as it brought in false tax
Basically a higher society of the rich was created when they should have been regulated

We should have let Anglo bank go under instead we are putting billons into a bank that nobody will ever use again.

Its crazy stuff designed to protect the very people who caused the problems. If this was America or Uk they would be in Jail.

You really paid too much in public sector?

People who work there get rubbish pay outs compared to the private sector in Sweden.

Most countries in Europe seem to have a problem with the banks really, as this financial crises we endure or have endured testifies.

I'm really no economics expert though so I should not say much more on this.

                  I like Piquionne.

Im not a finance expert either (ugh boring)

I just hate the irish administration.
Btw Irish government keeps name dropping Sweden all the time about the mid 90's bust in your economy. As if it somehow makes our crisis any better.

Ireland pays their public sector workers higher than any others across europe

The top paid public sector worker in ireland gets 750 000 for running an electricity company which is semi state body.

Brian cowen earns nearly 100, 000 more than David Cameron . Crazy stuff.

                    I like Jarivs.

i think cantona is the freddy flintoff of football in that he was criminally over-rated. good player obviously but his aura seems to be more based on personality than achievement on the pitch as his stats, like flintoff's, are good, not at all great. it helped cantona being a technical and intelligent footballer in an era when english football was 100% industry, he was a big strong guy too which helped.

Medals prove nothing. Shearer gets a plus in my book for integrity in not joining the dark side of the force. He is like Luke Skywalker, if Skywalker wasn't such a ponce and was a daemon in the air.

If we're looking at French players and medals, Guivarch > Cantona

Ps. And half of Djimi Traore > Cantona also

if you asked in France i would say Cantona would be way down the list if you include players in all positions.
most of the recent World cup and Euro winnindg squads for starters, chuck in Platini,Tigana,Girresse etc and Cantona would be way down.

          Overrated?!! Arrrrrrrghhhhhhhh

"There will be no other player demanding more of my respect, my admiration, my observation of his skills, the shedding of tears and to miss the days where he blessed us with his presense on a pitch than Eric Cantona. People can come on here and talk as much bull**** as they want about him but he bled for man utd, he reduced many to tears when he left us including alex fergusson who was holding back tears at the press conference. He is and will always be the king."

Well said me random dude on Youtube. Overrated, indeed, PAH

these clips prove he was a top player and did turn it on in the big games too. i think he's over-rated in that he has a godly status after just 5 seasons. imo the fascination in him was more his personality we saw in press conferences and on the pitch (obviously we don't really know him as a person).

That's a bit of truth in that, but his godlike status comes from the fact he was the catalyst that changed Man Utd from a mediocre team into the best in the land. Not only in his play but the legacy he left with the team that followed him. Beckham, Scholes etc.

he was the leader/catalyst in those sides i guess, but those teams were littered with top players like giggs, keane, kanchelskis, hughes, ince etc. i remember vital single goals against the likes of newcastle a couple of times and a header against blackburn. i have the same problem with zola being voted chelsea's greatest ever player btw, not in that he wasn't good enough to warrant it, more he wasn't there long enough to warrant it.

I unfortunately only got to see Cantona play live once at portman road. It was in his pomp and there was just no one else like him on the pitch. With his collar up and his chest stuck out like a pompous french cockerel, he was just mesmerising. I got the same awe from Zidane watching him, but that was due to skillz and balance rather than ridiculous arrogance. Cantona owned the pitched, class.

The idea isn't interesting at all, anyone with a brain will realise it will just f*ck over the people, not the banks. High street banks would just have to ration cash withdrawals and people who actually need cash would be in the shit

The banks require the peoples deposits to function as its capital. If the banks are without this capital it wud require a bailout as it wud not have sufficient funds to sustain business. As it is the banks reluctantly release money.

With this idea, the bailout cud not happen as the IMF etc cud not afford it therfore a new banking structure wud need to be developed but only if this idea is taken on board throughout europe. It offers sum sort of power to people you cud say.

Over 30 billion euro in deposits have been taken out of the two main irish banks within the last couple of months. Internationally there is no confidence in the irish banks hence the bailout which was over and down with within 2 weeks.

Hello people. Currently on my WC, the team is taking shape but got a few areas of uncertainty, and comments would be greatly appreciated!

    Foster Begovic

    Givet Kolarov Kyrgiakos Bardsley Simpson

    Nani Bale Cahill Nasri Brunt

    Tevez Torres Balotelli

Would rather have Samba than Givet, would also like an Everton defender, but not sure how to fund either. Perhaps downgrading Balotelli but somehow fancy him to push on and score well.

    What would you change?

Hmmm, I am not over keen on the two Man City strikers, and Kolarov as well. Perhaps downgrade Balotelli, I also fancy him to do well but 2 City strikers, I'm not keen. Up to you but I just wouldn't. Perhaps Odemwingie?

agree re drop balotelli and go for Odem. West Brom love to attack and score plenty. Also wouldn't buy simpson esp with newcastle's current problems, but they rarely get a clean sheet. Wouldn't lose any sleep over an everton defender either unless it's baines.

Like the sound of the Balotelli punt but I think I am either going for Simpson OUT Kyriakos IN or Piquionne OUT Torres IN, two very different options, one will clean up my defence of Bardsley/Vidic/Jagielka/Boateng, what are peoples thoughts? Team would be:

    Foster
    Boateng/Vidic/Jagielka OR Kyriakos
    Nani(C)/Nasri/Dunn/N'Zogbia (VDV)
    Rooney/Elmander OR Torres

Fookin sweet, another 4 for Handsome Tom, reading on NFL.com the other day how Vic Carriuci reckons it's Belicheck's crowning achievment in all his years, to take a young side, a busted up make shift defence and make them 10-2, loving it!

With Tevez and Kolorov suspended my team looks as weak as a kitten for the coming gwk.

But strangely by replacing Enrique with Kyrgiakos it starts to look a little more robust. Am I being taken in by fake Lucas's Soto greek warrior tweets or does he really have the power to revitalise my team?

Pointless observation, but anyone else think the Villa - WBA game is an odd one to have at 3.00 on a Saturday. Usually those derbies are the earlier K.O on a Sunday. Especially seeing as Wolves - Brum is on the sunday.

They wouldn't want both of those games on the same day - could turn into a real West Midlands riot, only about 10 miles between the Villa ground and the Wolves ground, and none of those 4 teams' fans like each other much...

It's a tough one. As an out-and-out player, he wouldn't make my XI either. But what he did at United was amazing - how many 1-0's did they manage with Cantona getting the goal? One-man, they were - one-man team.

        *ducks*

        P.S. He's no Clive Mendonca.

Not only that, but the goals he scored all seemed to be crucial. He was the definition of a big game player (apart from in europe). He was the catalyst for Man Utds success in the 90s. Quite simply, he changed everything.

            That was easy.

P.S. On the team of the nineties, I'll start:

            Schmeichel

I don't even know who Mendonca is, but he literally sounds like a donkey. That 90s Midfield picks itself. Giggs Scholes Keane Beckham.

me too....other transfers just keep getting in the way. Also already have Elmander and Tevez. When Rooney recaptures his mojo, he's a shoo in. Until then I fear Drog stays.

I know its a good idea short term, but is Cashley to Baines worth it in the long term?

    Thoughts please

Everton always seem to start slow. They've always had a good defense until last yr - only 11 clean sheets. Not convinced they're gonna get it together this year. Think it's general lack of confidence in the team - if they were scoring goals, the defence would probably perform better too. Maybe they're trying to get involved in goal scoring instead of defending !

Afternoon all. Is malouda to bale a good move at the mo considering how poor chelsea have been. Lookin to use the extra cash to bring in torres or berbatov. Team linked I think . Cheers

    Hmmmm. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/apr/17/tottenham-hotspur-chelsea-premier-league

Had the armband on Nani, but maybe, just maybe Bale could be the man of the moment.

Arguably Bale and spurs are better at the moment and Chelsea are worse. It's worth considering though.

If you are looking for a cheapish defender around the £ 5m mark, look no further than these 2....Huth and Konchesky.

Huth plays for defensively-minded Stoke who are very hard to break down, and I note he has 3 goals and 2 assists already. Expect at least a clean sheet home to BLK this weekend.

I think Liverpool are at LONG last coming good (who needs Gerrard or Torres ? 🙂 ) and their next 5 or 6 fixtures are pretty favourable. Look then at Konchesky...esp as he does have a more attacking-minded aspect to his game than the other Liverpool defenders.

    I have both....

I flipped a coin on Huth and Shawcross. Like the rest of my 50-50s this season, the coin landed the wrong way.

Johnson is more attackminded than Konchesky.
