Sunday morning’s deadline creeps ever closer and it’s time for a final roll of the dice. There’s only one chance left to overhaul that mini league lead and if you’re anything like me, then nothing short of a miracle will suffice. What’s needed is something truly special – a player that no one else has returning a monster score as captain, while the big names have an off day…

Very unlikely, of course, but while that chance remains there is always hope. With this in mind, we’ve picked out a trio of differential captain options, in the hope that one can help you pull off an epic last day turnaround to rival that glorious sunny day in 1994.

Leighton Baines

David Moyes is notoriously difficult to predict at times, but reports suggest that the ex-Wigan man has been back in training this week and looks set to return against Newcastle, providing an interesting option as a last day punt.

Everton’s impressive form over the last eight games has seen then turn in five clean sheets and score four or more goals on three separate occasions. What’s more, they’ve shipped just one goal at home in the last seven, a run that has seen City, Chelsea and Spurs come away from Goodison without a goal between them. Form is definitely on their side, then, and although Newcastle will be desperately pushing for the win to give them a chance of Champions League qualification, Everton will be confident they can keep the likes of Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa at bay.

Defensive returns alone aren’t enough to pull in a monster score but, as arguably the most attacking defender in the league, Baines offers huge potential at both ends of the pitch and could easily top double figures. It’s a big risk of course; to maximise returns as captain, you’re relying on him playing 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet, and will probably need a penalty or a couple of assists to boot. If there is anyone capable of pulling it off at Goodison though, Baines is your man and with just 5.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would be a huge differential captain.

Carlos Tevez

If there is one player in the league capable of racking up a cricket score this week, it’s Carlos Tevez. With just 2.3% ownership compared to Sergio Aguero’s 29%, the Argentine maverick has the power to completely overhaul a mini league gap in one fell swoop.

After a huge 19 point haul against Norwich, he has not done much of late but we all know what Tevez capable of. Hugely influential in City’s late surge towards the title, he will be looking to further redeem himself in the only way he knows how; scoring a shed load of goals. With the extra incentive of beating his old club to the Premier League title, Tevez will be bouncing off the walls; chances are he’s either going to get sent off or score a hat-trick.

Priced at 11.6, squeezing Tevez into your team won’t be easy, and you may need to consider *gulp* dropping the imperial Robin Van Persie. We’re talking desperate measures here, though, and if you’re going to pull off a miracle, then you’ll probably need Van Persie to have a shocker at the Hawthorns anyway.

Andy Carroll

Second only to team mate Luis Suarez in terms of Fantasy frustrations this term, and with just one double figure return all season, Andy Carroll is perhaps the biggest gamble of our trio. With so much potential on offer, and so many chances handed to him on a plate, the former Newcastle man has hit the post or been edged off the ball at the vital moment time and again. It might be a slight cliché to say that Carroll is due a bumper haul, however, but he really is. One look at our members stats show he has been a real handful over the past four Gameweeks, creating umpteen goalscoring opportunities and firing several efforts at goal. Despite the fact that Carroll has returned just a single assist since Gameweek 34 onwards, only Van Persie has offered more in terms of key passes and goal attempts.

Don’t be fooled into thinking Liverpool have nothing left to play for. If they better Everton’s result against Newcastle, they will leapfrog their city rivals into seventh – this may seem like small consolation but means a huge amount to anyone associated with either Merseyside club. Coming off the back of a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea and up against a Swansea side that are have shipped four goals in their last home game, Liverpool will be looking for a big win here and, with a bit of luck, Carroll could be just the man to take advantage.

Please help. This is my first year ever playing fantasy epl and the first year ever exposed to 'soccer'. I am an American living in Hawaii and have a chance to finish 3rd in my league. I am up by 9 points. I have been playing fantasy games for almost 20 years and have to say that the epl league is amazingly fun! I used to be a 'soccer' hater but now i have total love for the sport. My sisters Polish boyfriend in Seattle talked me into playing even though i knew nothing about soccer. Here are my standings:

    Classic leagues
    Rank League
    3 Liga de Coco Sante
    Global leagues
    Rank League
    42,448 Gameweek 1
    42,979 Overall
    1,256 USA
    3,431 Liverpool

I can't decide who to bench between valencia or moses! Here is my current team:

    Krul
    EVE (A)

    Kompany
    QPR (H)

    Huth

Should i consider benching Bale? I hear talk about him playing leftback, but i still don't understand the sport enough to know how that impacts anything. My guess is the right side would be more of an attacking position. Thanks again.

    VDV / Bale / Siggy / Barfa / Dempsey
    Aguero / RVP / Jelavic

    Rival's Team:

    Enrique / Hibbert / 2 Swans defenders / Jevans
    Moses / Bale / Siggy / Barfa / Dempsey
    Rooney / RVP / Cisse

I'm 15 points behind my rival who was already done 2 free transfers this week which I know are Jevans and Dempsey out.

I've taken one transfer this week to get in Aguero, should I make another for a four point hit or stick to what I've got in hope that it's enough to over-turn a 15 point deficit?

My team is linked and I've not made a change yet - I've not made a points hit all season so I'm not looking to make a hit this week. I made a bit of a mess of my free transfer last week, so I'm asking for some guidance for this. The obvious player out is Dempsey, but who should I consider? I'm leaning more towards Silva as it seems sensible to back at least one City player.

Hey, thanks for the reply considering the time and that I believe you're a rival in a minileague I'm in, even though I've built a nice lead in the final few weeks of the season. :p

I'm quite happy with my forwards despite not having Aguero so I'll probably go with Dempsey>Anyone. Looking at my team again, it'd mean benching Petrov or Nani (surely not?) though. Bringing a defender in so I don't have to choose between playing Bardsley or Taiwo is an option too. :S

Are we actually going to get something from that league?

Looks like a midfield change or a hit.

I'm not expecting anything to be honest, think I joined it at the start of the season as a randomer on here advertised it, and not heard anything from him since in the league forum or otherwise.

Would be nice though as it's the only league I'm close to winning. I'd be happier with a top 1k finish though.

If you are adamant about not taking a hit (and its hard to argue with you given that ranking!) I'd actually use your free trade to strengthen your defence - Evans to Kompany perhaps? Your attack and midfield look fine.

Thanks. 🙂 The thing is though if Nani doesn't play then I'd have Taiwo coming off the bench (or Bardsley if I get another defender in).

Personally, I think that Nani will play - but I see your point. If you do decide to offload Dempsey then I agree that Silva is the logical option. Good luck!

Cisse > Aguero and Dempsey to VDV. Then (c) Aguero so that it is worth the hit!

Perhaps as a chance to see how he does before presumably going out on loan next season? I expect things to be shaken up a little, Piazon tweeted that he expects to make the bench but haven't read much more than that.

Lukaku should surely start today. I was guessing he would be upfront along with Torres. Though I don't expect Torres to play 90 minutes.

If I had to back anyone I'd choose Germany. Not really sure why, other than I don't really fancy Spain to win it.

Even on points at the top of my league. He has Cisse/Rooney/Jelavic. I've got RVP/Rooney/Jela. Considering Rooney out for either Aguero/Torres. Thoughts? Would also mean a 4 point hit for me. Throwing the (c) on RVP. Cheers!

Could you do RVP to Aguero for no points hit?

Nah, i was a bit premature in doing the dempsey=>moses trade. Am actually leaning towards leaving it as it is, as i dont think it's going to be a City landslide. QPR will no doubt play a 8-1-1!

Yeah, leaving it is probably a good idea - as things stand RVP gives you a clear advantage. Weirdly, I am also equal top of my league - I DID actually take a hit to bring in Aguero, but only because I could see that my rival had already taken a hit. Good luck!

    Evening Deadzoners. Last Horrah!!!!

I am protecting a 50 point lead! Yet want to make up gound on the Top 5K overall.

    My Team:

    Friedel /Mingolet
    Verm/Naylor/Macauley/Jevans/Simpson
    Bale/Pienaar/Siggy/Moses/Dempsey
    RVP/Rooney/PCisse

    a) Jevans>Shawcross or Wig Def no hit (c) RVP
    b) Rooney>Aguero & Jevans > Lescott 4 pt hit will (c) Aguero
    c) Rooney>Aguero & Dempsey>VDV 4 pt hit will (c) Aguero

if c which mid to bench?

    Advice greatly appriceated!

I like b). But I think your 50 point lead is safe with any of those options!

Don't get a defender in for a hit. In fact don't get a defender full stop. I would do C) or even just Rooney > Aguero for free to save yourself a benching problem.

Thanks Ryan....My Rival has VDV. The only thing that can hurt me is if vdv runs wild and my rival gives him the (C). Also Swa and Eve have nothing to play for, would give me back up if Pienaar or Siggy get benched.

        Who are you captaining?

50 points is a massive lead I wouldn't worry about losing. Just figure out how you can improve your rank. Captaincy is everything and I don't know who I will captain yet. A city striker or RVP seems to be the best bets. I don't think Pienaar or Siggy will get benched but I suppose you never know

I dropped around 20 points behind my ML leader last gw. He has RvP - Rooney - Aguero, and he will surely captain Aguero. Now I have to take risks, for differential I just did RvP -> Torres and also gave the armband for the Spaniard (Cisse - Jelly - Torres is my front now).

Barfa seems to be the only midfielder we both have, should I take a 4 point hit to make Dempsey -> Yaya, and this way bench Barfa?

No. 20 points is enough of a deficit without adding to it. Just keep your fingers crossed that Torres does the business for you!

    Playing

    Ruddy

    Verm, Walker, McAuley

    Petrov, Bale, Valencia, Pienaar

    Aguero, RVP, Jelavic

    Krul, Dempsey, Cahill, Evans.

Worth taking a hit to bring in another defender(Terry, Clichy) for Mc. Subs bench is bare.
