Sunday morning’s deadline creeps ever closer and it’s time for a final roll of the dice. There’s only one chance left to overhaul that mini league lead and if you’re anything like me, then nothing short of a miracle will suffice. What’s needed is something truly special – a player that no one else has returning a monster score as captain, while the big names have an off day…

Very unlikely, of course, but while that chance remains there is always hope. With this in mind, we’ve picked out a trio of differential captain options, in the hope that one can help you pull off an epic last day turnaround to rival that glorious sunny day in 1994.

Leighton Baines

David Moyes is notoriously difficult to predict at times, but reports suggest that the ex-Wigan man has been back in training this week and looks set to return against Newcastle, providing an interesting option as a last day punt.

Everton’s impressive form over the last eight games has seen then turn in five clean sheets and score four or more goals on three separate occasions. What’s more, they’ve shipped just one goal at home in the last seven, a run that has seen City, Chelsea and Spurs come away from Goodison without a goal between them. Form is definitely on their side, then, and although Newcastle will be desperately pushing for the win to give them a chance of Champions League qualification, Everton will be confident they can keep the likes of Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa at bay.

Defensive returns alone aren’t enough to pull in a monster score but, as arguably the most attacking defender in the league, Baines offers huge potential at both ends of the pitch and could easily top double figures. It’s a big risk of course; to maximise returns as captain, you’re relying on him playing 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet, and will probably need a penalty or a couple of assists to boot. If there is anyone capable of pulling it off at Goodison though, Baines is your man and with just 5.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would be a huge differential captain.

Carlos Tevez

If there is one player in the league capable of racking up a cricket score this week, it’s Carlos Tevez. With just 2.3% ownership compared to Sergio Aguero’s 29%, the Argentine maverick has the power to completely overhaul a mini league gap in one fell swoop.

After a huge 19 point haul against Norwich, he has not done much of late but we all know what Tevez capable of. Hugely influential in City’s late surge towards the title, he will be looking to further redeem himself in the only way he knows how; scoring a shed load of goals. With the extra incentive of beating his old club to the Premier League title, Tevez will be bouncing off the walls; chances are he’s either going to get sent off or score a hat-trick.

Priced at 11.6, squeezing Tevez into your team won’t be easy, and you may need to consider *gulp* dropping the imperial Robin Van Persie. We’re talking desperate measures here, though, and if you’re going to pull off a miracle, then you’ll probably need Van Persie to have a shocker at the Hawthorns anyway.

Andy Carroll

Second only to team mate Luis Suarez in terms of Fantasy frustrations this term, and with just one double figure return all season, Andy Carroll is perhaps the biggest gamble of our trio. With so much potential on offer, and so many chances handed to him on a plate, the former Newcastle man has hit the post or been edged off the ball at the vital moment time and again. It might be a slight cliché to say that Carroll is due a bumper haul, however, but he really is. One look at our members stats show he has been a real handful over the past four Gameweeks, creating umpteen goalscoring opportunities and firing several efforts at goal. Despite the fact that Carroll has returned just a single assist since Gameweek 34 onwards, only Van Persie has offered more in terms of key passes and goal attempts.

Don’t be fooled into thinking Liverpool have nothing left to play for. If they better Everton’s result against Newcastle, they will leapfrog their city rivals into seventh – this may seem like small consolation but means a huge amount to anyone associated with either Merseyside club. Coming off the back of a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea and up against a Swansea side that are have shipped four goals in their last home game, Liverpool will be looking for a big win here and, with a bit of luck, Carroll could be just the man to take advantage.

Feel Utd are going to go all out. Sunderland have been poor and have nothing to play for. Utd will play with 2 up top and Tony V has been one of the most consistant performers this season. Dont see how he can be benched.

Petrov has averaged 7.2pts per game since I bought him for GW35. In that time only RVP has averaged more at 7.7. Bale is on 4.5 and Siggy 3.

That's no easy call...theory suggests to split your Everton players (so bench one) but they are both playing well...then there is the Stoke factor to consider...so my guess is to bench either Pienaar or Petrov. It"s not easy so good luck man....

I'm going to have to say (closes eyes with hands)...Petrov!

    Morning All,

Leading a mini-league by 21pts and noticed my closest rival has taken a 4pt knock. He most likely moved Dempsey out and is either playing the Yak and moved out Carrick (yes, not sure why he has him) for someone OR he's moved Dempsey out and replaced the Yak with someone like Jelly. I am guessing but he has tons of budget left. My goes is he did Dempsey to Yaya and Yak to Jelly.

This is my team and and I have 2 free transfers:

    Krul
    Jag, Kompany, Caulker
    Bale, Sig, Pienaar, Valencia
    RVP, Rooney, Cisse

Mig, Dempsey (inj), Simpson (inj), Evans (inj)

    1. Dempsey to Moses / Cisse to Aguero
    2. Dempsey to Yaya / Evans or Simpson to Walker/Huth/ShawX

    Any suggestions or ideas?

Option 1 was always on the cards with the hope that I had a defender for cover but perhaps just risk it hey?

          The other questions are...

          1. Do I match his captain option, which will be RVP I guess or run with Aguero? Be safe and match him or take a chance and get nailed maybe?
          2. Play Moses then over Sig or Val?

Defending a slender 4 points lead. Rival has done 1 transfer this GW. Which should I do?

      B) Evans -> Kompany *Mirror frontline and build defence*
      C) Rooney -> Aguero (c), Evans -> Kompany *do both and take a 4pt hit*

      Hi,

Could do with some help with my team – trying to hold on a 27pt lead with 1 FT and £2.5m in the bank. My defence is a bit of a mess bit keen to bring in Augero because I’m sure rival will make captain.

      Mignolet (Stockdale)
Turner, Richards , Rangel, (Evans) (Simpson)
      Dyer, Pienaar, Bale, Sigurdsson, Dempsey
      Cisse, Rooney, Van Persie

      Should I
      a) Rooney >Augero & Dempsey >Ramires (-4pt)
      b) Cisse > Augero & Dempsey >VDV (-4pt)
      c) Rooney > Augero & Richards >Kompany (-4pt)

My only important minileague is basically decided (I'm 52 pts ahead and the closest rival has taken a 4 pt hit) so I'm going for a top 1000 finish for the season, which translates to roughly 4 pts at the moment.
I have played rather sensibly the entire season so I want to go for a bit of a gamble and take an 8 pt hit this week.
      Choices:
      1a) Jelavic to Aguero
      1b) Cisse to Aguero
Both teams are rather solid at the back, I think Cisse is the better player but Jelavic plays at home.
      Leaning towards Jelavic out.

      2a) Dempsey to VdV
      2b) Dempsey to Moses
I already have Bale but both could score really well this week, will most likely get VdV.

      3a) Sagna to Clichy
      3b) Sagna to Zabaleta
I've been very impressed by Zabaleta recently and if I believed that players could be "due" points then I'd go for him but it looks like Clichy is the preferred choice, 3a) it is.
My two cents regarding "no hits for a defender on the final day of the season", yes it's sensible. But since I have to play Bardsley I'm thinking I'm trading his 1 pt for a City def's 6+possible offensive returns.
If it doesn't pay off the worst thing that happens is that I drop a couple of hundred places.

      Any comments?

        1a (I'm doing that)

Just realised I've written that incorrectly. Can only get VDV or Kompany if I take out Rooney.

And despite looking at his name for many hours I spelt Aguero's name wrong.

I think I'm going to go with a 4 point hit for...

      Gads.
Everybody is waking up. This is too much for a simple caveman DeadZoner like me. Pages turn too fast. (And I should probably focus on this paper that I'm supposed to be editing... and then go to sleep, pushing midnight)

G'night all and thanks for your thoughts to the DZ crew. Best wishes for the finale!

Don't worry, the pages will literally stopped turning from tomorrow. It will be a permanent dead zone out here. Though it will spike up again as the Euros approach. Best of luck to you too.

i will probably embarrass myself here, but is anyone playing Euro2012? this is my early draft. admittedly i looked for cheap players with high ownership, not sure how nailed on all these players are.

      Akinfeev (Tzorvas)

      Zhirkov, Evra, Papadopoulos, M Olsson

      Ozil, Sneijder, Mata

      Ronaldo, Robben, Ibrahimovic

      (Parker, Abate, Polanski)

      any glaring mistakes?

They are all fairly nailed on, although there is a bit of a debate over the Russian and Greek keeper spots.

Abate doesnt appear to be in favour at the moment.

Players worth looking at imo are:

        Mandzukic (OOP)
        Kadlec (on Pens)
        Srna

So that answers the question whether you are playing in the Euros.

By the way loads of team drafts were posted a few days back. You should consider getting M.Kladec (he takes penalties and is a defender) and also think of Alba from Spain. No glaring mistakes as such.

Agree. The Spanish midfield is very hard to predict. Going for Silva, Fabregas or Mata will most likely not work out. Better to go for the more nailed on players, like Iniesta. 😉

Mata is not nailed on for Spain, and Ronaldo usually doesn't perform that well for Portugal.
The Polish Dortmund striker Lewandowski is cheap is thought break through in this tournament, could be worth a look. Croatia also has the OOP-midfielder Mandzukic.

It looks very much like we're closing in on a generic team, so yeah, I guess you'll be sick and tired of all the same players again and again.

The code for the official FFS-league is posted on the front page. And if you contact Doosra he'll probably let you in to his little private league. 😉

Hey fuzzy keep a lookout for the Euros announcement by ENR and co...It's gonna have a different style of playing. We are gonna be playing in teams against each other. So it's not gonna be the traditional 1 on 1. More like 2 on 2,,,,Details are sketchy as of now.

I will tell Enr to send you a reminder through mail.
Btw you really made ENR's cup absolutely fun, with your spirit and the banters involving you were probably some of the favorite in the tournament. Wouldn't want you to miss out on the Euros.

Any help would be appreciated please. £300 resting on this. 11 points clear of my league. Second place has took a hit so have a 15 point cushion. Team is,

      Friedel

      Koscielny, Richards, Santon (Kelly, Evans)
      Valencia, Moses, Yaya, sigurdsson (Dempsey)
      Van P, Rooney, Aguero.

Do i run with this with a weak back 3 as Evans is injured and Richards may not play or take a hit. Also Dempsey is injured, is my midfield strong enough or take a hit for him for a strong mid.

Again any comments would be highly appreciated.
      Thanks

      my mids/forwards is thus:

      bale/moses/pienaar/sigirdsson/dempsey
      RVP/aguero/jelavic

gonna play all 3 forwards, in my position would you shift out dempsey for a hit, or just play the other 4 mids.

my main ml rival has already taken a 4 point hit and i have a 7 point lead.

if selling dempsey i have enough in the bank to afford any mid in the game.

If you are happy with your team, taking the hit will make you stress over which front player to bench...you could just make it easy on yourself and save those 4 points and stick. With such fine margins you may need those 4pts...I would be stick if it was me...

      Do I:

      1. Captain RVP (to probably match my rival) or Aguero?
      2. Which mid to bench: Val, Sig, Moses, Bale, Pienaar? (I have RVP, Rooney and Aguero)
