634x258 Season Review

When Man City captured a 22-year-old Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for a fee of £6 million in 2008, they knew they had themselves a bargain. Ironically, Kompany went into the 2011/12 season costing a similar amount, with Fantasy managers quick to target his 6.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag as a source of value. Having been classified as a midfielder in the 2010/11 campaign, Kompany was now listed in defence and, while the likes of Shay Given and Luis Suarez failed to live up to their pre-season hype as Fantasy bargains, the City man certainly delivered.

Kompany finished the campaign behind only Patrice Evra in the defender rankings, despite being limited to 31 league starts, compared to the United man’s 37. The Belgian’s inspirational performances skippering City were akin to Steven Gerrard’s showings for Liverpool at his peak: Kompany dragged City to the title, adding determined steel to a back four that notched four clean sheets in the final six matches. His goal in the 1-0 victory over United that gave City the advantage over the final two matches proved to be decisive, epitomising Kompany’s importance to City’s cause.

The Statistics

With 15 clean sheets gathered, three goals and two assists, Kompany trailed Evra by just 14 points atop the FPL defender rankings. For a player who recorded 31 starts, Kompany averaged 4.7 points per game in the FPL – a total only bettered by defenders gaining a handful of appearances.

A hugely popular pick from the very start of the season, by Gameweek 10 Kompany’s price had risen to 6.3, reaching 6.6 by Gameweek 24 as the investment continued. Several mid-season absences with a three-match ban, along with knee and calf injuries, derailed his popularity temporarily but, by the campaign’s climax, Kompany’s price had risen to 7.0. Significantly, City kept just two clean sheets over the seven games without their skipper in the defence.

The Prospects

Kompany will pose a problem for Fantasy managers next term. There’s no question that he’ll suffer a price rise which will likely see him share a bracket with heavyweight defensive assets Thomas Vermaelen, Nemanja Vidic and Leighton Baines of around 7.5. Even so, as an obvious source of 15+ clean sheets over the season, the City backline is set to be coveted.

Kompany’s inflated price tag will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the likes of Gael Clichy and perhaps Micah Richards once more: assets that are set to be remain prone to rotation. Joe Hart will also emerge as a stronger option as a result of Kompany’s price rise. Hart will offer almost 100% security in the City rearguard, whilst his price is likely to be lower than Kompany’s, remaining at the 7.0 mark once again.

For the City skipper to stand out as the key source of points in their defence, he’ll need to better his 31 starts and three goals earned this term. That should be achievable, although the lure from Vermaelen and Baines as genuine sources of attacking points may still see him relegated in the ranks of popularity.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    RMT Please,

    5.5 in the bank

    Akinfeev (Tzorvas)

    M Olsson - K Papadopoulous - Debuchy(St Ledger) (Strinic)
Yarmolenko - Rosicky - Shirokov - Ozil (Andrews)
    Benzema - Ibra - Huntelaar

Was planning on WC after GW1

Have not really thought about subs too much was not considering them as relevant due to the WC I could take a few punts on clean sheets. (Andrews for a laugh really)

Your keepers are fecked. Both play on the same day. I believe Olson/Abate might not be first choice. St ledger & Strinic...maybe someone can confirm.

Andrews? Maybe Mclean once he is added?

Good stuff guys, yeah abate and olsson have both not featured highly in the qualifiers I drafted olsson in waiting to see if he plays in the friendlies as he is quite an attacking left back.

Cheers about the subs, clearly I did not read the rules about switching players out even when they have played.

St. Ledger featured in the qualifiers from the research I did, Strinic seems nailed on left back from the research I did (uefa.com and fourfourtwo).

Quite aware him and RVP are in my eyes going to rotate, was kinda hoping the netherlands will put denmark away in the opening game.

At this stage he looks more likely to start striker with RVP possibly wide left or wide right

they need to play RvP - Hunt - Arjen as their front 3 with Sneijd feeding em, but the coach loves Kuyt too much, so he'll likely put Dirk at LW.

I wasn't gonna bother with the Euros but now a few of my mates who starting up the FPL mini-league wanna give it ago. They want 1st, 2nd and 3rd prices this time though because apparently they "lost interest" half-way through last time, probably down to me getting to far of a lead. I don't mind that, because at least this time we're gonna collect money before the league starts and have someone look after it.

Are most peoples FFS teams the same? I haven't had look yet but anyone got any tips? Thanks in advance. 🙂

we always have 10% of the league as prize winning places. eg 30 teams = 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes.

you have to take money before hand and kick out any teams that dont pay up, its the only way. then you need someone sensible to look after the money and not spend it/leave the country!

I have a feeling for the Ruskies. They've still got by and large the same team that did so well under Hiddink, 3/4 fairly reliable scorers in Arse-shavin, Pog, Pav and Kerza, and they qualified fairly comfortably, suggesting reasonable form.

From a betting point of view, odds available from 18sup to 25s (Boylesport), which looks a decent punt given their group, and that the best you'll get for Spain is 2.5, Ger 3s and 7s on the Dutch.

Czech's at 66-1 could be worth a couple of quid, although I'm not sure about where their goals will come from, but could do well if they stay tight at the back.

I agree Steely. It will take a monumental effort to get out over Spain and the Italians, and at 9/5 to just qualify, there's not much value there. If they did though, could be interesting, but it's one of those pretty large IFs.

Spain are funny though, when they play together they very often only see a game out with 1-0 or maybe 2-0. The Croatians are very strong in my opinion. Still though, none of them are going to compare to my glorious Irish squad!

According to folks here who've played Champions League with that rule, Centre Backs get most of them. Most received in one game this season was 3 but 1 is much more common.

Seems to me like it's a tie-breaker at best. i.e. don't pick a player based on potential for these points.

Mikess, for GW1 I won't be backing any French players. Keep the money in the bank, but you'll be toying with this side no end come the friendlies anyway. 🙂

Front 8 look good, don't know much about Yarmo mind...

I'd say stick your £1m in defence, there's a decent chance that every one of your defenders will concede...maybe upgrade Pzieszcek/Olsson/Papa to a Dutch (Mathijsen) or French (Evra/Debuchy) or Croation def?

Would be handy if we had some Frenchies, Italians, Germans, Croatians etc who're better tuned into their national teams. There seems to be a lot of debate on whether certain players will be first choice like Olsson, Strinic, Greece goalies, Gotze etc

I'll start the ball rolling with IRELAND
Ireland have the most predictable XI of any team in the tournament:
    Given
    O'Shea, St Ledger, Dunne, Ward
    Duff, Whelan, Andrews, McGeady
    Keane, Doyle

The only slight question mark is over Doyle given his terrible form. In which case Long would come in, or a very slim chance of McClean.

Im not a Czech, but their lineup is also one of the most predictable in the tournament:

      Cech
      Gebreselassie, Hubnik, Sivok, Kadlec
      Plasil, Jiracek
      Rezek, Rosicky, Pilar;
      Baros

Any chance McClean will start the odd game?

The friendlies will obviously be a good indication but I doubt it. Unless Doyle or McGeady has an absolute shocker against Croatia. Though Spain will absolutely spank us (more so) if we play 4-4-2 so I suppose there's a chance.

Dark horse potential there, CG, if Baros can get some goals. 66-1 available, from a decent group and then... who knows in the knock-outs.

I like it, I'm taking Kallstrom over Larsson and Benzema over Ibra though. And don't think Lahm is worth the cash.

Also wouldn't double up on Czech defence, they conceded 8 goals in the qualifiers against fairly weak opposition, okay just checked, 4 to Spain, 2 to Lithuania, 2 to Scotland, and some poor results in friendlies too, 3-0 to Norway
