634x258 Season Review

When Man City captured a 22-year-old Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for a fee of £6 million in 2008, they knew they had themselves a bargain. Ironically, Kompany went into the 2011/12 season costing a similar amount, with Fantasy managers quick to target his 6.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag as a source of value. Having been classified as a midfielder in the 2010/11 campaign, Kompany was now listed in defence and, while the likes of Shay Given and Luis Suarez failed to live up to their pre-season hype as Fantasy bargains, the City man certainly delivered.

Kompany finished the campaign behind only Patrice Evra in the defender rankings, despite being limited to 31 league starts, compared to the United man’s 37. The Belgian’s inspirational performances skippering City were akin to Steven Gerrard’s showings for Liverpool at his peak: Kompany dragged City to the title, adding determined steel to a back four that notched four clean sheets in the final six matches. His goal in the 1-0 victory over United that gave City the advantage over the final two matches proved to be decisive, epitomising Kompany’s importance to City’s cause.

The Statistics

With 15 clean sheets gathered, three goals and two assists, Kompany trailed Evra by just 14 points atop the FPL defender rankings. For a player who recorded 31 starts, Kompany averaged 4.7 points per game in the FPL – a total only bettered by defenders gaining a handful of appearances.

A hugely popular pick from the very start of the season, by Gameweek 10 Kompany’s price had risen to 6.3, reaching 6.6 by Gameweek 24 as the investment continued. Several mid-season absences with a three-match ban, along with knee and calf injuries, derailed his popularity temporarily but, by the campaign’s climax, Kompany’s price had risen to 7.0. Significantly, City kept just two clean sheets over the seven games without their skipper in the defence.

The Prospects

Kompany will pose a problem for Fantasy managers next term. There’s no question that he’ll suffer a price rise which will likely see him share a bracket with heavyweight defensive assets Thomas Vermaelen, Nemanja Vidic and Leighton Baines of around 7.5. Even so, as an obvious source of 15+ clean sheets over the season, the City backline is set to be coveted.

Kompany’s inflated price tag will have Fantasy managers eyeing up the likes of Gael Clichy and perhaps Micah Richards once more: assets that are set to be remain prone to rotation. Joe Hart will also emerge as a stronger option as a result of Kompany’s price rise. Hart will offer almost 100% security in the City rearguard, whilst his price is likely to be lower than Kompany’s, remaining at the 7.0 mark once again.

For the City skipper to stand out as the key source of points in their defence, he’ll need to better his 31 starts and three goals earned this term. That should be achievable, although the lure from Vermaelen and Baines as genuine sources of attacking points may still see him relegated in the ranks of popularity.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So now AVB is front runner for the Liverpool job? While I like him as a manager do they really believe they're ready to wait more than a few months to see results? If not he'll be gone by Christmas, assuming he even goes to them.

Another potential interesting pick next year - Howson. Appears to be rotation proof in the Norwich line-up having started 11 games since joining in January. Goal and an assist to his name again could be a decent option at 5.0 (which is what I expect him to be).

I am liking your little picks here, really liked the Diarra one.

Although cant see Howson ever scoring more than 4 or 5 in a season.

No I can't either but for that slot in midfield - initially at least - it's good enough to have the potential to score once every 7 games, maybe chip in with an assist or two and most importantly start.

I think it's easy to think now that we got Sigurdssson, Moses, Petrov at around that price but come the new season you are unlikely to get a player who will score regularly at 5ish.

Did anyone else use Paddy Power to bet on Van Persie for top goalscorer earlier in the season? It was a Fantasy Football Scout special offer (16/1). I just logged in to see if it had settled and there is no longer any sign of it in my account! I didn't write down the receipt number either!!!

Anybody else got their UCL team ready for the final?

    Neuer
    Bosingwa, Contento
    Ribery, Robben, Mata, Lampard, Mikel
    Drogba, Mueller, Gomez

Contento is a Bayern full back for 4.6 who will replace Alaba, had to take two hits (-4) to get to this, just to put 11 out no thanks to Badstuber, Ivanovic and Alaba.

Any thoughts on other players that are more essential? Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Malouda, Kalou, Torres?
I have 0.9 in the bank, only thing i'm really debating is Torres over Mueller.

Or more defenders? I can't see either with a clean sheet though tbh.

Yeah, Kalou is listed as a forward, is a reasonale option though, only 5.6, as third striker after Gomez and Drogba.

Lahm is 7m, so i'm not sure there's much point paying so much for him when Boateng is nailed on for cheaper, and Contento or Rafinha will start for cheaper.

        Expected team:

        Neuer
        Lahm, Boateng, Tymoschuck, Contento
        Schweinsteiger, Kroos
        Ribery, Mueller, Robben
        Gomez

Rafa Benitez had gone 99 games without an unchanged team and because the media picked up on the big 100, he decided for the next game to make no changes.

Totally beguiling and pompous, almost like he wasn't taking his job seriously anymore.

His record in the transfer market was awful and CL 2005 bought himself a stay of an extra 3 years of failure.

Just heard a cheeky rumour of Solskjaer to take over at West Brom - the most logical post-season managerial rumour i've heard in a while...cut his premier league teeth at a supportive & stable club like the Baggies & get himself groomed as Fergie's replacement at United!

Or he could end up at Villa/Liverpool and ruin his reputation permanently.
