We continue the analysis of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by taking a look at another of the competition’s favourites. Having already run the rule over Denmark and Germany in Group B, we turn our attentions to the runners-up in the 2010 World Cup, Holland:

Bert Van Marwijk’s side get the ball rolling in Group B with a 5pm clash against rank outsiders Denmark on Saturday June 9. Following on from that is an eye-watering showdown with Germany, which takes place on Wednesday June 13 at 7.45pm, before they pit their wits against Portugal in their final group match on Sunday June 17 at 7.45pm.

This group has, arguably, more potential for goals than any other. Germany won all 10 of their qualifying matches, scoring 34 times in the process, and also thrashed the Dutch 3-0 in a friendly last November. Denmark may be the underdogs but demonstrated their capabilities by finishing above Portugal in the qualifying rounds, forcing Cristiano Ronaldo et al to defeat Bosnia Herzegovina in the play-offs to seal their progress.

The Road to Qualification

Van Marwijk’s men breezed through qualification with nine wins and one loss in their six-team group; the defeat, at second placed Sweden, occurred after Holland had already clinched top spot in the group. The Dutch racked up 37 goals, scoring more than two goals on five occasions – the highlight being an 11-0 home win over San Marino – and conceded just eight, with a total of six clean sheets accrued.

Most Appearances: Mathijsen & Van der Wiel (10), Huntelaar, Pieters & Kuyt (9)

Top Scorer: Huntelaar (12), Van Persie & Kuyt (6), Sneijder & Afellay (3)

Top Assists: Sniejder & Kuyt (6), Van der Wiel (3)

The Likely Lads

Gregory Van der Wiel is far from cheap in the McDonalds game. The right-back comes in at 7.0 and, with Germany and Portugal offering a strong attacking presence, many Fantasy managers will likely avoid the Dutch defence. Those afore-mentioned six clean sheets, in addition to a trio of assists, highlight Van der Wiel’s possible potential at both ends of the pitch, however, and with starts nailed-on and an ownership of 3.9%, he could be a decent differential.

Coming in at 9.5 in the McDonalds game, Wesley Sneijder has already received plenty interest, with 23% of Fantasy managers snapping up his services. Playing in the hole in Holland’s 4-2-3-1, Sneijder returned three goals and six assists in eight appearances over the qualifying campaign and, after a frustrating injury-plagued campaign with Inter, will be keen to steer his country to success. Aside from his obvious talents and likely set-pieces, Sneijder’s appeal is furthered by the fact that Dirk Kuyt and Arjen Robben – the other two near-certain starters in the attacking midfield three – have both been classified as forwards in the McDonalds game.

Injury prevented Arjen Robben from playing any part in the qualifying campaign but, back to full fitness, his contribution on the flank will play a pivotal part in Holland’s attacking forays. Priced at a reasonable 9.0, the Bayern Munich man could appeal to those Fantasy managers looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role; a double in Holland’s 3-2 win at Wembley highlights his importance to the side, though Robben will need a morale boost after that crucial penalty miss in the Champions League Final against Chelsea.

Cheeky Punt

With only one forward role available in their favoured formation, it could well be a straightforward battle between Robin Van Persie and Jan-Klaas Huntelaar to lead the line. While Van Marwijk has recently insisted both could play together, it remains to be seen if that is the case if Holland have a fully fit squad to choose from. Certainly, Robben’s enforced absence afforded them the chance to do so doing qualification with the Arsenal skipper out wide but, with the Bayern man now fit and raring to go, his manager has a huge decision to make. Both players are priced at 11.0, though Huntelaar has the potential to be a huge differential, with just 4% ownership to Van Persie’s 32.7%. At this point, it’s difficult to snap up either player with full confidence; Huntelaar started and scored against Bayern Munich last night but Holland have three more friendlies still to follow, though, and by the time the tournament gets underway, we should have hopefully more than guesswork to go on.

Priced at just 7.5 in the McDonalds game, Dirk Kuyt is an intriguing prospect. While his domestic campaign with Liverpool has been disastrous, Kuyt provided as many assists as Sneijder and scored as many as Van Persie in qualifying – the fact he missed just one game indicates Van Marwijk’s faith in his abilities. The Liverpool man seems to be ahead of Huntelaar in the penalty pecking order – he scored from the spot in a friendly against Austria when the latter was still on the pitch, though it’s worth noting that Van Persie didn’t play any part in the match. With an ownership of just 4%, Kuyt could be one worth considering, with many Fantasy managers choosing to overlook him in favour of the bigger names amongst the Dutch squad. He underlined his potential by providing an assist in last night’s 3-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Spanish, Italian and English leagues all headed by two teams 20/30 points ahead of the rest...not sure what that says......

In the Spanish league it will likely stay that way, but I can see the Italian and English leagues being much more competitive next season.

In Italy Inter are rebuilding, and still have the core of their treble winning side, they will close the gap, Napoli without CL football could do what Juve did this year, if they can keep their big players, and Juve and Milan will be up there again. And Udinese and Lazio could make a push for the top even.

In England there is of course the two Manchester clubs, a reinforced Spurs without manager troubles, Arsenal making a few big signings surprisingly, and Chelsea sure to invest whoever their manager is, they could all be challenging for the title.

And of course Newcastle and Liverpool, who will both be aiming for Champions League and will make it a little more competitive.

I've just noticed the "Assistant Manager" in the McD's game.

He recommends "Yarmolenko is on your bench but I think he'll score more points than Ibrahimović. You should swap them."

    and

"I think Akinfeev will score the most points. You should make him captain."

I think he might be pissed.

Bizzarely, in "hands on" mode, I get:
"Rosicky will score most points. You should captain him.",
and in "hands off" mode, I get:
"Sneijder will score most points, you should captain him".

btw, was talking to Fratboy last night. He was talking about Vaz Te as a potential budget striker option. I personally don't think he's worth it and I fully expect you guy to buy at least 1 striker. What do you think.

His list was Harte, Llalana, Lambert and Vaz Te.

ah ok, pens and all, I think I prefer Yarmolenko but I have toyed with Srna. Yeah Given for sure. Ukraine are not a great side, but they are a host nation this makes a huge difference, no way Sweden will keep a CS IMO. Their weakness is in defence due to having no senior keeper available.

12 match ban for Barton is very excessive if you ask me. If you are an established England international you can get away scott-free with doing this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjVU6Twg2lg

And the FA will bend over backwards for you to get a lenient ban for this:

Sacking him is high on my wish-list. Think of the wages we'll save and can then use on a good midfielder or even LW!!!

Having attended every game at Loftus Road I'd say he was no better than our 3rd best central midfielder after Faurlin & Diakite - not what is expected from the club's top earner...

Diakite a done deal - fee agreed, we just haven't paid it yet. Faurlin will be back in training in summer but maybe not ready to start the season at full strength.

Interesting to see us linked to former Hughes buy Nigel De Jong today. A starting trio of Ale, Samba and Nigel would be a nice platform to defend or attack from!

Am gagging for a real LW. Moses or Jarvis would be ideal. Anyone you'd would particularly like to add Henry?

Good news about Diakite, he really impressed after his debut madness. Is Taiwo a done deal too?

Traore should be played LW, as we saw with his assist for Mackie's goal v City he is well suited to that position. Can't see De Jong coming really.

Shay Given also linked, that would be unbelievable! One of the top 3 goalies in the league in my opinion

Why are you doubling on the Italians in defence. Spain are always likely to score at least one. I'd get rid of one for a French Defender
      Keepers are good
Midfield may be a bit weak but it allows you to have a strong defence and a strong defence.
I like Benzema and Lewandowski but I don't think Robben will be that prolific so I'd take him out.

Sadly, I don't think we'll know before the first match since Chiellini isn't likely to play in the friendlies.

I guess we'll just have to stick to our guns and see who's got it right.

Not a fan of Sorensen. Would go Given instead.

Up front, Kuyt is a big punt, I guess it's alright though. Worried about any potential changes you might want to make though. There's no way to upgrade to a Muller, Robben or Podolski with that attack. See if you can downgrade Karagounis or one of your other mids.

have developed a plan that may allow me to get Rooney in for Jelly in GW3. Unfortunately it does involve Andrews.

My current draft at the moment. What are your thoughts on it?

    Szczesny, Pletikosa
    Kadlec, Zhirkov, Alba, Debuchy, Olsson
    Andrews, Yarmolenko, Ozil, Iniesta, Sneijder
    Jelavic, Lewandowski, Benzema.

Like it, am still tossing up between Blaz and Lewandowski.

Will look at Benzema in GW2.

I'm leaning towards Blaz so I can have Benzema AND Llorente in GW2.

I like it alot though i'd probably prefer an Italian defender to Debuchy. Only thing I don't like in attack is Iniesta, I think the Spain midfield is overpriced for what they offer.

I think Iniesta will get a goal and a few assists in the group stage at least. I can see them winning all 3 convincingly and he'll surely play a part.

    Lewandowski//Benzema//Ibrahimovic

Don't think i'll be able to afford him, though if Benzema fails I might sell him for Rooney.I think Benzema will have a decent tournament though.

I agree on Benz. Can't decide between Lewandowski and Blaz. Advantage of Blaz is it would allow me to get Rooney in in GW3 without an issue over who to drop as I could leave enough funds after I wc to get him in for Jelly.

          So essentially it's

Benzema, Lewandowski and Ibra for GW1 then Ibra to Llorente

          or

Benzema, Ibra and Jelly with Ibra becoming Llorente and Jelly becoming Rooney.

Both look like decent options, follow your gut, if you think Rooney will do well then go for the second option.

yeah. It's a tough call, I will use the friendlies to asses my options and see how Jelly, Kuba and Lewandowski look, wish I could switch a 5th mid to a 4th striker.

    Keep tinkering with my team.

    Akinfeev / Sorensen

    Strinić / Papadopoulos / Kadlec / Boateng / Olsson

    Błaszczykowski / Schweinsteiger / Sneijder / Yarmolenko / Cabaye

    Lewandowski / Llorente / Ibrahimovic

Anywhere I can improve? 1 mill left in bank. Maybe Shweinsteiger > Ozil??

Pretty bad I think, I don't have a full understanding by any means but if Greece fall out of the Euro then there could be a big loss in confidence of the currency, and potential for financial contagion.
