Huge backing for Salah captaincy as Wildcard template for DGW19 forms

Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) was handed the armband by huge swathes of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 15.

The Egyptian has accrued the largest captaincy backing in a single round at this level so far in 2020/21.

A whopping 82.8% of the top 10k chose Salah as their skipper ahead of an appealing home meeting with West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have conceded 29 goals in 14 league matches this season, an average of 2.1 per game, while Salah has blanked just once at Anfield in 2020/21.

As a result, it is no surprise to see so many high-level managers captaining him for Gameweek 15.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) was the second-most popular captain among the top 10k but still only managed the support of 5.2% for his home meeting with Newcastle.

That makes for a majority of 77.5 percentage points between Salah and De Bruyne.

And those who handed the armband to the Belgian had no joy on Saturday, with the City playmaker taking only appearance and clean sheet points away from the 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, we can expect the top 10k to deploy a flurry of Wildcards in Gameweek 16 considering the chip usage for the latest round.

As you can see from the bar chart above, only 1.9% of these managers assembled a new squad for Gameweek 15 – a fact perhaps influenced in some part by the proximity to Christmas Day and a desire to leave Blank Gameweek 18/Double Gameweek 19 planning to the last possible moment.

That takes the total usage for the Wildcard to 81.6% among the top 10k with just one deadline left before the first one expires.

That means almost one in five of the top 10k have less than two days left to use the first Wildcard.

As is to be expected with some of the early frontrunners at this stage of the season, a fair chunk have already eaten into their chip allowance.

Almost one in three of this leading bunch have used two or more of their chips, with 2.9% now only having a second Wildcard in their locker.

But what of the 191 managers who played their first Wildcard ahead of the Gameweek 15 deadline?

As the graphic above illustrates, many of them have Double Gameweek 19 – and a possible Bench Boost – on their minds.

Ten of the 15-man template above have two fixtures in Gameweek 19, while Son Heung-min (£9.7m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) have very favourable matches in the shorter term.

Almost two-thirds of the Wildcarders kept hold of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), interestingly, although what many may have deemed a favourable match-up against Sheffield United on Boxing Day may have been his last hurrah and the blank at Bramall Lane may hasten his departure from some of these teams.

De Bruyne and Chelsea defenders are the big losers in the above squad.

As for the most-owned players in the top 10k overall, there were two changes to the ‘template’ squad above from Gameweek 14.

Ben Chilwell (£6.1m) and Reece James (£5.1m), who were both flagged with injuries before blanking at the Emirates, have been replaced by Stuart Dallas (£4.7m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.3m).

Chilwell and James’ ownerships both dropped by more than half among the top 10k ahead of Gameweek 15.

There’s no need for that. You can’t climb rank if you own the same players as everyone else. People try different things.

That's not true. You climb rank by scoring the most points. Doesn't matter where they come from. Even if it were, you'd fall down quickly by ignoring the best value players just because the majority owns them.

What he said is actually true. If everyone owned exactly the same players then the game would grind to a halt, no rank changes would be possible. Doesn't invalidate your arguments though. You need to score points and pick the best players to do that. Finding some good differentials is necessary if you want to do really well overall, but at the same time you also need to have (most of) the highly owned and high scoring players.

Of course, but that's an argument in a vacuum that really doesn't matter because our teams are not the same, but my primary point was that saying that you don't need the best value players because they're owned by the top managers is simply wrong. You need the players you think are going to be the best players, you may need players that you know are going to be scoring the most points. You definitely can/sometimes need to climb rank by owning them, while not picking all the same (we can't after all, we have different team values and we don't agree on which players are the best point/million players). You need differentials, sure, but they too should be irrelevant of ownership. Sometimes you'll maybe not go ahead of the top managers by owning the popular players but often you'll be guaranteed to fall behind without them. Liverpool players last season are a good example.

I think the whole concept of ownership as a decision maker in this game to be bonkus, perhaps with the only difference being in a mini league where you're behind and the only way to win is by not catching up points but instead gambling on a short term differentisl, but it's so rare that even then it's barely worth thinking about.

Maybe I got lucky but I got top 3k last season and I don't once think about ownership. I just think about how many points I think each million spent is going to grant me.

I don't think that you disagree with me, I just didn't like the advice on ignoring players because they're owned by so many.

It wasn’t advice on ignoring players because of their ownership, it was pretty much telling the guy above that you don’t need to own the same players as everyone else to do well and sometimes you can’t as well.

I’m sure you could not have owned Bruno once this season and instead owned the likes of Salah, Son, Kane and done very well.

I agree with what you’re saying about just getting the most points as possible. I follow that rule, everyone does. But near the end of the season, if I’m trying to win a mini league or climb big rank, I can’t then just own and captain the exact same players as those ahead.

Nope. I own Watkins too and they both stay. One of the most attacking teams in the league and they can score a few against anyone. Inconsistent for sure but for the prices you pay (~7.5m for Grealish, ~6m for Watkins) you expect this. Patience is a virtue in this game!

Playing more centrally at the moment with Barkley out. Expect him to shift back to the left when Barkley takes back the #10 position. Probably suits him more to drift in from the flank though he has delivered decent FPL returns recently (last week was it?).

No - Che and Man Utd hardly solid at the back atm and his fixtures gw20-30 rock so I'd want him back. 2 dgw yet to schedule too.

Yep. Keep the Villa contingent. Martinez looking like a proper season keeper. Grealish and Watkins excellent value. Traore also beginning to stake a claim. Not convinced by El Ghazi but he's returning at the moment.

I'm set on Martinez, Grealish & Watkins for the forseeable. They've done me well. Don't see any reason to change with those fixtures coming up. And Villa's record against the bigger teams this season suggests goals are possible in any game.

      - Al Ghazi is feasting on shots instead of give and go

OK he misses some good chances. So does Bamford. But they both play in attacking teams and are both capable of picking up goals or assists in any game. Watkins has 3 double digit returns so far this season (the same number as KDB!). At that price he represents a bargain.

My plan is to free hit in gw18 and probably use the triple captain chip in gw19. So for now, gw16, I could do the below move - stupid or not?

    Grealish + Wilson -> Soucek + Kane

    Martínez
    Coufal, Robertson, Taylor
    Son, Salah, Fernandes, Grealish
    Wilson, Bamford, Ings

    Button, Burke, Lamptey, Douglas

    Martinez
    Dias Dier Coufal
    Salah Bruno KDB grealish
    Kane Bamford DCL

    Steer Soucek Casey Douglas.

Maybe Son for KDB allows for a DGW keeper or maybe another DGW player in GW19 instead of your 2nd and 3rd bench (eg Dallas or Zouma)

Fair play then mate. Don't really go for tactics like this, especially when there are so many good options.

All the best though man. You might be a genius.

    Replace:
    A) Dallas
    B) Taylor
    C) Coufal

    2) Robbo

A2 although Dallas is current flavour of the month. TAA will likely be the man again at some point but newly back from injury still and Robbo is playing great.

      Don't like either tbh...

Always found vardy frustrating to own. Guess you could say the same for kdb at the moment.

Gonna keep an eye on Antonios fitness. Could be a good differential for the double if he's fit in time. Don't fancy DCL to find his scoring boots again?

Vardy you have to stick with for a while.

I could get Robertson too over TAA as long as Johnstone doesn't go up in price.

Yeah never had that patients. Very unpredictable. Scores when you don't really expect him to.

By the numbers robbo looks the better pick imho, heard that taa is getting a rest tomorrow as well??

Have 8 DGW players and KDB Grealish DCL
Now first thinking is doing KDB to Son now and lose Grealish or DCL next week. FH18 and Son to Mane for 19. KDB back for gw20+ probably. Have no Spurs but might also get Mane now. Hokey cokey worth it? Just get Son and worry about else later?

He is, he was rested against MCI on Tuesday, so he could play in the PL. Luiz is ill at the moment and he is one of the worst defenders in the world when they play with back 4, so my guess is even if he comes back, they'll play Holding, Mari, Luiz with Tierney and Bellerin as WBs.

    Best options on WC:

    1. Alioski, Balbuena, Kane, Bamford
    2. Dias, Matip, Vardy, Bobby Reid

    Option 1 means probably Kane + 4.5m mid > Rashford/Reid or Martial/Bowen for DGW while option 2 means Dias + 4.5m mid > Raphina/Balbuena

unless you are priced out - no

I did AWB to Vest a few days back and it came back to bite me

I don't want to get rid of Cresswell per se, I want a Spurs defender in my team and being the most expensive defender I own, he is the only one I can sell to buy one in. I will be getting Coufal soon
