Chelsea’s slide continues as they suffer a late defeat in Marseille, while at the Emirates a nervy 3-1 win is enough for a subdued Arsenal to progress, but only as group runners-up, paving the way for a potential meeting with Spain’s big boys.

Elsewhere, there’s news on the fitness of Steven Gerrard and Michael Dawson, while, in between ice baths, Rio Ferdinand’s been busy on Twitter again…

Those clinging to Chelsea’s Fantasy assets could find little to comfort them from the 1-0 defeat in Marseille. On an emotional night for Didier Drogba, he failed to show a glimmer of renewed form or confidence and his current malaise typifies Chelsea as a whole right now.

Although already through to the last 16 prior to the game, Carlo Ancelotti’s concern on his side’s current slide will deepen further after last night’s performance. Although denied a couple of penalty appeals, Chelsea were in the main, second best to their French opponents.

“The performance was not so bad defensively where we had a good control of the game but we could do better up front. We had a lot of opportunities to do counter attack but we didn’t do so well with the final pass or the final shot.”

The lack of attacking prowess is a worry for Ancelotti given the strength of his lineup last night. Nicolhas Anelka and Ashley Cole were rested but the likes of Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and Micheal Essien all started, along with Drogba. Elsewhere Josh McEachran came into the midfield with John Mikel Obi rested with a Champions League suspension looming.

Mikel will return to the lineup for the visit to Spurs this weekend and Ancelotti remains hopeful that Frank Lampard will join him in midfield. Jose Bosingwa is out of the weekend clash however – he limped off with a hamstring injury and has already been ruled out by Ancelotti. That will mean Paulo Ferreira, who started at left-back last night, will fill in on the right of the defence – a possible concern given that Gareth Bale will be in opposition. John Terry suffered an ankle knock and was also subbed last night but this is apparently not a concern for the Spurs game.

Arsenal endured a nervous night at the Emirates, ultimately running out 3-1 winners but not before visitors Partizan had conjured thoughts of an unthinkable Champions League exit with an equalising goal. In the end, a spot-kick from Robin Van Persie and second-half goals from Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri proved enough to see the Gunners through, but only as runners-up in their group.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the lineup that saw off Fulham at the weekend – Robin Van Persie’s start as skipper was the most notable change – significantly he played “in the hole” behind the striker as the in-form Marouane Chamakh kept his start. Elsewhere Denilson came into the midfield for Jack Wilshere while Kieran Gibbs replaced a sick Gael Clichy at left-back.

From a Fantasy perspective all the interest surrounded Van Persie. He took on penalty duties here, relieving Samir Nasri as expected. That, and Van Persie’s role at direct free-kicks will dent the Frenchman’s potential, although Nasri’s form is surely strong enough to maintain interest and prompt further investment for now.

Van Persie’s role and the impact on his Arsenal’s team-mates is a key factor to look out for however. Last night’s decision to play him in support of Chamakh didn’t appear to work and Wenger hinted after the game that he will be rethinking his options here…

“I was not completely happy with our offensive game tonight. But I will have to watch that again. Maybe it was down to the quality of Partizan’s defending because I felt they defended in a very intelligent way and very well. I will have to analyse that a bit better.”

Wenger’s options in attack remain plentiful and it’s significant that Walcott again had to emerge from the bench to make an impact; he continues to struggle to hold down a starting role and the emergence of Nasri in a central role and Wenger’s loyalty to Andrei Arshavin, are certainly limiting his chances. If Wenger looks to pair Van Persie with Chamakh in the mid-term, Walcott looks set to remain a bench option.

Arsenal came out of the game without any significant injuries although Kieran Gibbs suffered yet another set-back. He sustained an ankle injury and Wenger has already ruled him out of contention for Monday’s game…

“He has a twisted ankle, an ankle sprain. I don’t know how damaged his ankle is – he will have a scan tomorrow. He is unbelievably unlucky. No [it is not the same ankle he injured recently], it is the right one tonight. I spoke to him, he is quite down. He is on crutches. I cannot tell you more. We will know tomorrow but he is already out for Monday night.”

Clichy will surely make a return at left-back then, while it appears unlikely that Cesc Fabregas will make reappearance in midfield. The big decision for Wenger could well be whether to start with Van Persie having handed him 90 minutes last night. A 4-5-1 formation would seem a likely scenario for the clash with United, and that could well give an opportunity for Walcott to earn a start out wide, with a remit allowing him to drift inside to support Chamakh or Van Persie.

Steven Gerrard looks odds on to return to the Liverpool lineup for the visit to St James’ Park. Roy Hodgson now faces a dilemma when it comes to accommodating his skipper following the emergence of Raul Meireles. Lucas has also performed well while Gerrard has been sitting in the stands and that may well see Hodgson relegate an unfortunate David Ngog to the bench at Newcastle, restoring Gerrard in a support role behind Fernando Torres.

Michael Dawson completed 90 minutes and scored in a in a 4-3 friendly win over MK Dons yesterday. The big defender has been on the bench in Tottenham’s last two games but is clearly edging closer to a first start – it’s unsure whether he will displace Sebastian Bassong alongside William Gallas for the clash with Chelsea; that looks unlikely.

Rio Ferdinand is expected to make United’s clash with Arsenal on Monday. The defender has been undergoing ice bath treatments to accelerate the recovery process after suffering a tight hamstring in Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Valencia. Ferdinand has kindly given us an optimistic view of his injury on his Twitter feed…

“Hammy feels OK, treatment over the next couple of days to try and get ready for the game on Monday. Get me out there!”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have the following team this week

    Foster
    Vidic/Coleman/Konchesky
    Nani/MGP/Cahill/Etherington(c)
    Elmander/Rooney/Torres

    Subs: Nasri/Simpson/Kolarov

Im in a bit of a dilema about keeping Nasri on the bench given his form. The only problem to me is that my current front 6 could all be capable of doing well going by fixtures. Is this the right choice.

Also any opinions on my captain choice?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

That is a good point Boom, Until I looked at the recent results I didnt realise that they rarely concede more tham one goal.

Looks like MGP is bench fodder then now. (Please dont score now 🙁 )

He could but Blackburn aren't that great when they're away, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a rare bolton clean sheet. I don't expect much from nasri either this week but I think he's more likely to prove me wrong.

    Can't decide whether to do

    Simpson to Kyrgiakos OR
    Cole to G Johnson

Alongside Tevez to Torres this week. What do people think? My thought are that I would play A Cole if I had him, but would not play Simpson, meaning I'd be forced to play Samba if I went with the Cole - Johnson transfer..

    Robbo Foster
    A.Cole Vidic Kolarov Simpson Tamas
    Nani Cahill Nasri Nzogbia Jarvis
    Drogba Carroll Elmander

    Thinking either:

    A) No transfers
    B) Tamas to Kyri then Cole out next week for a cheapie depending on his performance
    C) Cole to Kyri
    D) Drogba to Torres
    E) Carroll to Bent or someone similar price
