Chip Strategy

What chip strategy are FFS users planning for Blank Gameweek 18?

Nearly half of Fantasy Football Scout voters are contemplating the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18.

In our recent poll, 45.0% revealed that they would be pulling the trigger on a one-week-only Wildcard squad.

Specifically, they explained they would be playing the Free Hit regardless of any changing circumstances to their teams.

Results as of Friday morning

By comparison, just under 2.0% of our voters indicated they would only use the chip if their squad sustained more injuries or suffered from more coronavirus (COVID-19) postponements.

That certainly suggests the Free Hit could receive additional attention from members of the community on Tuesday considering recent events in the football world.

It will be interesting to see what these managers do about 2020/21’s latest Fantasy Premier League curveball.

Ahead of participating in Blank Gameweek 18, Aston Villa revealed on Thursday that a coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak had occurred at their training ground.

‘A large number’ of first-team players and staff tested positive in the most recent round of tests, forcing the premises to be closed on Thursday morning.

That put paid to first-team training ahead of Villa’s FA Cup match with Liverpool, scheduled for the evening of Friday, January 7.

As things stand, the tie is going ahead with Aston Villa’s Under-23s filling in for the first-team, provided they test negative.

Blank and Double Gameweek audition for Man United and Aston Villa

What impact that will have on Blank Gameweek 18 remains to be seen.

The postponement of Spurs’ visit to Villa Park could drastically change the look of Free Hit squads. Or it could even force more managers to play the chip than before.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) still sit in 63.5% and 44.8% of Fantasy squads worldwide while 38.1% own Jack Grealish (£7.7m) and 29.9% hold Emiliano Martínez (£5.0m).

Uncertainty reigns though. A postponement would wipe out all those popular assets from the list of active players while a similar arrangement to tonight’s FA Cup game could intensify interest in Spurs assets.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) are the two most-talked-up captains for Blank Gameweek 18 but Kane and Son would surely come into the conversation if they face Villa’s youth team instead.

Result on Thursday morning

We can see that there was a slight change in the voting patterns between Thursday and Friday morning; before and after the news of Villa’s COVID-19 outbreak.

The differences are subtle, perhaps because of the remaining uncertainty, but, comparing the two sets of data, we saw an increase of 0.8 percentage points supporting the Free Hit (regardless) option between Thursday and Friday.

Tellingly, there was a decrease of 1.2 percentage points among those planning to handle Blank Gameweek 18 with free transfers (no hits).

We saw a similar drop in the category of free transfers (one hit) while there was an increase of 0.2 percentage points for those prepared to take two or more hits.

It is still worth considering the relatively sizeable chunk of Fantasy Football Scout voters hoping to tackle Blank Gameweek 18 without a chip.

andys-gw17-article 7

Even after the uncertainty surrounding Aston Villa’s involvement, 47.6% of our voters are planning to use only free transfers between now and Tuesday’s deadline, although there is some disparity in terms of propensity to take hits within that.

Either way, that overall total is higher than the number who selected the ‘Free Hit regardless’ option and is at a similar level to the total when we combine these voters with those pulling the Free Hit in the event of more postponements and/or injuries.

This fact is an important element for Fantasy managers to consider for this Gameweek.

We are, admittedly, focussing on a relatively small sample size here compared to the rest of the world, although knowing what the more enthusiastic managers are doing, of which we have many here on the site, is useful information.

And what we are seeing is an indication that a large number of managers are hoping to avoid using their Free Hit if possible.

The news came on the same day that Southampton’s third-round FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury was postponed.

Following a significant number of Shrews players and staff testing positive for COVID-19, they have not trained all week after closing their facilities for 10 days.

The FA’s professional game board is to decide when the fixture will be rearranged for “early next week” but as the pile-up continues, authorities are starting to run out of free slots between now and the end of the campaign.

What about this WC-Team ? Have no playing Spurs or Villa-players as they will miss 1 or even 2 Games probably.

    Leno Martinez
    Dias Cancelo AWB Coufal Saiss
    KDB Fernandes Rashford Neto Soucek
    Lacazette Wilson Bamford

    1.4 itb.
If there is positiv News for Villa I would change Leno, Neto, Lacazette for Mccarthy, Son, Watkins

Looking to bb in 19 if Covid allows it

Wilson will become a dgw striker like Antonio, Adams, Wood

First attempt at FH team....and yes I have already hit the button 🙁

Feel I only need 1 Spurs.

    Leno (Sanchez)
    AWB Cancelo Dias Tierney (Mitchell)
KDB (C) Bruno (vc) Rashford Son (Stephens)
    Lacazette Wilson (Brewster)

If Villa Spurs off I think I'll have to punt on Sterling and go Leno to Darlow, Dias to Holding

    Thoughts?

I think you shouldn’t have hit the button

Looks good to me though if those are the fixtures which go ahead.

Integrating you are going 4-4-2. I’d have thought a 5th midfielder or a 3rd striker would have more potential than Mr 6 points ‘Dias’

Agree that I'd probably rather go 3 at the back to try and attack the FH as aggresively as possible. Dias doesn't generally score above 6 at most.

Agree I shouldn't have hit it but my TV is so low I took the gamble to get all price changes.

I looked into the 5th mid or 3rd striker and just wasn't gone on any of them to be honest. I mean Saka is great value long term but not sure on a 1week punt in a FH.

As for the FW's, pure toilet.

For all the talk of cancellation, I think the PL continuing makes sense. The Govt aren't going to bail out football teams and there's an imperative for the PL to keep delivering at all costs to meet their TV deals. People talk about public sentiment being negative but the international markets are just as important and that is less of an issue there. If they start enforcing bans for Covid breaches, get over the post-Xmas bump, they can get through this.

With that said, I think the FA Cup going ahead is lunacy. No fans & gate receipts for lower league. No significant TV revenue to prop up. No purpose, but a huge risk given the state of the lower leagues and the current surge in the PL. Would be the perfect time for natural 10 day break and to create less congestion later in the season. Huge lack of leadership within the FA.

Even on FH. He takes up a precious City spot. Is anyone really gonna risk a last minute cameo or a full benching of a 10m+ player?

He hasn't started a game in months, it's not as easy as saying he has the highest chance, he has no form and is very expensive.

He literally does have the highest chance according to the bookies

Bookies odds are based on him starting though aren't they?

Misleading percentages as they imply he will start and play the whole game.

Thought it was just start? Surely if he gets subbed off early they don’t void all bets...

They dont void them, no, but the odds assume they play the entire game. One of the reasons why goalscorer odds are a mugs bet.

Think most people will be looking double city def on free hit, so it’s kdb or aguero

Most? Think most would be looking at double attack considering the way Brighton attack games

Noob question: I've made 2 transfers for BGW18 (with DGW19 in mind) and taken a -4 hit.

If villa spurs is cancelled and I have to free hit this week, will I lose the two transfers I've already made when my team reverts back to my non-FH team?

Yes you'll lose them, and the -4.

If Spurs Villa is off, i go from 10 to 7 players with 2FTs. Issue is that the 7 includes Taylor(mun and injured) and Burke (garbage)

    Taylor Cancelo Stones
    Bruno Kdb Burke
    DCL

Free hit or take a 1 hit to get 10 out? well effectively 8 with taylor/burke

I can honestly say that if football is completely cancelled my mental health would really suffer. Without playing football, playing other sport, going to the gym, physically going to work, seeing colleagues and friends/family and having to home school a child, look after a newborn baby and still work (as is my wife), football and FPL is really important in terms of staying sane!

Don’t worry, the sophisticated convo on here will continue

On a serious note I’m really hoping it’s not cancelled either

I recommend setting up a beers and games night over hangouts/zoom whatever with the lads!

I also really missed going to the gym initially but theres actually a ton of good home workout channels on youtube for body weight exercises etc which is a decent replacement. Doubt Ill go back to the real gym tbh!

Ahh proper gym any day for me over home workout (even though I am a big fan of home workout plans). Zoom is good though I agree, friends and quizzes etc

Ive just realized the threshold for me is so much lower at home to actually get a session going, and I can actually get some really good workouts in even without the gym equipment. But I understand why someone would rather get out of the house.

I miss my climbing gym though, no replacement for that at home..

Yeah that’s all good, I think the gym for me is I’m more determined when I’m there. I did home workouts and HIIT’s for years but when I went back to the gym I liked that a whole lot more. Plus because I go Village Gym (or used to) you can track competitions on the onscreen monitor between yourself and others. That mixed with classes just makes it that more socially enjoyable for me I guess.
Certainly no replacement at home for climbing though for sure, I’ve often wanted to try that myself, sounds cool.

I agree, I've been lifting weights in gyms 3-5 times a week for night on 20 years, but I'm a very persuaded convert to bodyweight training after this year.

Never thought I'd get into it but quite enjoyed running this year in the absence of gyms - tracking it on Strava etc at least gave some form of tangible progression/competition even if it's a different sort, and it's a great way to just forget about things for a while.

I do agree that people should consider that aspect about trying to keep FPL safely going rather than seeing it as special treatment for prem. I know we're a small niche vs whole population but FPL and Prem really does give us something to look forward to and focus on. I do appreciate though that infections are getting insane now so maybe we will see it postponed for a while. I think they'll need to think about cancelling Euros pretty soon tbh - are we really gonna be in a position for that in Europe by the summer?

Thinking of taking a hit to field 7 in BGW. One of the players I am planning to transfer out is Kane who I had planned to move out in 19 for Vardy. With Vardy not playing in 18, which other forward is a decent option? Martial has picked up a bit over the past few GWs. A punt on him or someone else?

I agree. Its almost impossible to find a suitable replacement for him. Son is an option too for me. But I plan to keep him long term. Much better value than Kane. But if push comes to shove, Rashford can be a decent option too.

    What to do.
If villa v spurs called off you need to have none of there players.
If it is on then villa may field U23 team and you will want triple spurs and captain or even triple captain spurs.

There is no way they will field an u23 side imo.

Zero chance of PL forcing them to field U23 players. It's either cancelled or played with the first team.

    Draft Question;
if I drop players for GW18 (which ends Jan14), GW19 (starts Jan15) - will my opponents in league be able to get those players I dropped in Waivers? Or because of such short period of time between GameWeeks, all dropped players will go straight to FreeAgents?
    Thank you
