Moving Target

Can Robert Snodgrass’ set pieces turn him into a viable FPL asset for West Brom?

Robert Snodgrass (£5.7m) became Sam Allardyce’s first signing as West Bromwich Albion manager last week, signing on an 18-month deal.

Will he help transform his new team’s fortunes and become a viable Fantasy Premier League asset in the process?

We’ve run the rule over the former Norwich City and Hull man to find out.

The midfielder had been largely frozen out of the team at West Ham this season, making four substitute appearances in the Premier League for a grand total of four minutes.

Snodgrass, 33, had been an important part of the Hammers’ side before struggling with a back disk injury, which kept him out of the second half of last season.

The former Scotland international is expected to go straight into the team at the Hawthorns, giving the Baggies some much needed Premier League experience.

“I’m absolutely delighted he has chosen to take up the challenge with us. He’ll add Premier League experience and quality to our side.”

Sam Allardyce

There’s currently no sign of Fantasy Premier League managers being tempted to bring Snodgrass in ahead of Double Gameweek 19, but should he be considered?

VETERAN

Allardyce made a name for himself at Bolton for taking experienced players thought to be over the hill and bringing out some of the best football of their careers.

The careers of Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro and Gary Speed all experienced and Indian Summer thanks to their time at The Reebok.

And Allardyce is clearly hoping to get the same from Snodgrass, comparing him to Premier League legend Speed.

“He might be getting on but in his mind he still thinks he’s 20. Snodgrass runs all day, he’s got great quality and a huge amount of experience. He never gives up. Hopefully that will rub off on some of these players who will look at him and say, ‘My word’. Lifting the spirits and lifting the standards is very important at a professional football club. It’s even more important at a Premier League club.”

Sam Allardyce

Despite Allardyce’s comments, Snodgrass’ FPL returns have not dropped considerably as he has entered his mid 30s.

Last season he delivered a decent 10 goal contributions, scoring five goals and chipping in with five assists.

Despite playing fewer minutes, that was actually an improvement on the season before, suggesting Snodgrass could still have plenty to offer at Premier League level.

SWEET LEFT FOOT

Big Sam was keen to highlight Snodgrass’ left foot and how it would bring balance to his side, hinting at a role down the left hand side of midfield.

“He’s left-footed. We all look for balance. When you get the right balance in the team with left-footed players, they can really produce for you down that left side. I’ve heard from many, many people that he is exceptional in the dressing room which is a great bonus on top of his abilities.”

Sam Allardyce

West Brom’s two most effective attacking players of last season, Matheus Pereira (£5.6m) and Grady Diangana (£5.1m), who are both left footed, have struggled to replicate the form they showed in the Championship.

(Pereira left, Diangana right)

Allardyce even singled out Pereira for criticism, asking for more from the West Brom playmaker.

“It’s very simple. This is the Premier League and he needs to do it (play) quickly – much quicker than he did in the Championship. Then he will show his very skilful qualities. But if he chooses to do it at his pace in the Premier League, then he will not be successful.”

Sam Allardyce

Reading into these quotes, it is telling Allardyce has only started Pereira once in the Premier League since arriving at the Hawthorns.

And he appears to be equally unimpressed with Diangana, hauling him off at half-time in their 4-0 thrashing by Arsenal.

In the case of Snodgrass, it could be that Big Sam is looking for the midfielder to offer a greater balance in the middle of the park, with most of West Brom’s centre midfielders predominantly being right footers.

He would also add some much needed creativity, where other than Conor Gallagher (£5.5m), they are severely lacking.

But with both Pereira and Diangana struggling this season, it could be that Snodgrass finds himself playing out on the left flank.

SET PIECES

Throughout his career, Snodgrass has offered huge threat from set pieces, particularly from corners, as shown in his best 2016/2017 season.

With Allardyce setting up the Baggies in a defensive formation, they will need to make the most of set pieces if they are to pull off a miraculous survival.

Sam Inkersole, who covered West Ham for Football.London during Snodgrass’ spell, outlined the Scot’s quality delivery and what else he could bring to his new team.

“His qualities were obvious. Set piece delivery was impressive and vastly improved from what the Hammers had previously and simply, his work rate. Too many West Ham players that season (when he arrived) were passengers so it was no surprise they struggled.”

Sam Inkersole

Set pieces have already played a big part of the West Brom attack since Allardyce joined.

A towering header from Semi Ajayi (£4.8m) gave the Baggies an unlikely point against champions Liverpool.

And the big centre half netted again in the FA Cup against Blackpool, before they lost on penalties.

With a 6ft 3ins defender who can aggressively attack a ball in the other team’s penalty area, Snodgrass’ quality set piece deliveries may well find their target more often than not.

Should the pair be able to strike up a good understanding, then they could both turn into assets worth having in the second half of the season.

THE PROSPECTS

In a system that will suit his style of play, Robert Snodgrass could well deliver some good FPL returns for his new club.

His assist potential could also be bolstered by a new striker, one Allardyce is actively searching for.

“I am looking for a frontman, hopefully he’ll be coming through the door as quickly as possible. That’ll be from abroad, rather than from this country.”

Sam Allardyce

However, the main issue with bringing him into our teams is his price point.

Still priced up at £5.7m, he finds himself in the same bracket as former teammate Tomas Soucek (£5.3m), who has delivered consistent returns all season, and Raphinha (£5.5m), the dynamic Leeds winger who is starting to deliver goals and assists.

West Brom also face a torrid run of games in the next few weeks.

In their next seven the Baggies will face off against Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs and Wolves, with returns looking few and far between.

Kinder fixtures against Fulham and Sheffield United in Gameweeks 21 and 22 will give us a realistic idea about what to expect from their attack.

Ultimately, Snodgrass appears to be priced just a bit too highly to be considered for a budget midfielder role.

But those looking for a punt on a differential midfielder, with the Scot currently sitting at 0.1% ownership, could be hugely rewarded when fixtures turn in Gameweek 25.

I'm trying to figure out if this is going to happen when we'd hear about it if it'll go into DGW19. Ben says the FA Cup R4 scheduling would have to be announced first for it to happen but I can't see an announcement being made early Saturday morning (or even on the weekend at all) to say this so I'm guessing if we hear nothing tomorrow then the earliest GW it'll go into will surely be 20 (and that's only if it can go ahead next weekend). All conjecture anyway, for me it won't affect my transfers but will definitely affect my GK pick and probably my midfield choices too with El Ghazi there

    *Ignore this post.

A MESSAGE TOO ALL MANCHESTER UNITED FANS

People will try to downplay what Ole and this team are doing, by saying things like “Mourinho had more points, by this time, in the season he finished second” which is true; However they won’t mention that we had played more games, by this time, in that season.

Or they’ll say things like “United are only top, because Liverpool and Man City have digressed”; However, they won’t mention that this is because all the other teams have improved and are taking points away from them; Therefore making it a far more difficult and competitive league this year.

PLEASE PEOPLE; I implore you, don’t let the haters twist facts, too fit their anti-united agendas. We need to stand together, by supporting our team and supporting our manager, because this team is on the way back up and rivals can’t stand it.

I will support Ole as long as I see progression and If you look at the United squad now, compared to the squad that Ole took over, it is night and day.

Plus we are playing the best football since Sir Alex Ferguson left (I actually enjoy watching us play again); so any clown, who still thinks that Ole doesn’t know what he’s doing, has no tactics, no style of play, or hasn’t improved the team, is either lying to themselves or has a ridiculous and unnecessary AGENDA.

When Ole took over (permanently) 19 months ( or just one and a half seasons) ago, 99% of true United fans, all said that we needed a major overhaul and that we had at least a dozen deadwood players, that both needed too go and be replaced.

Plus we also said, that we needed a three year rebuild; and since that first six months (before Bruno signed) Ole has finished 3rd in the league, reached 4 semifinals and has a 70%ish win ratio, all at less than half way through those 3 years and without getting his number one, marquee summer signing (Jaden Sancho).

Plus look at how many players have improved (significantly) under Ole’s management, Shaw, Martial, Rashford and Fred are unrecognisable from the players we saw under Mourinho. Not to mention his success in the transfer market; other than Dan James and arguably Orion Igarlo, all of his signings have been successful; improving both the first team and our squad depth.

I’ve also been extremely impressed by his handling of Mason Greenwood; His integration into the first team has been executed perfectly; allowing him to perform to the best of his ability without over playing him or putting him under any unnecessary pressure. Plus Ole’s taken him out of the limelight this season, due too him struggling after his friends suicide; Whereas a lot of managers would’ve still played him despite his head not being in the game.

There has been a clear change of culture at our football (something else we all asked for) plus this squad of players, all clearly respect Ole and are playing for both him and the badge. I’m sick to death of the vocal minority on Twitter, constantly trying to undermine him and derail the players, overreacting every time we lose, like impatient, whining, crybabies.

Don’t get me wrong I still think Liverpool or City will win the league again this year (unfortunately), however I don’t think either will run away with it this year, I honestly believe that we are not that far away them anymore and that we could push too within 5-10 points of them both.

I still think this team are three players away from winning the league or the Champions League, a CB with pace (that can stay fit) to play alongside Maguire or Lindelof, a DM too allow us to play two CAM’s, because Matic is too old now, too do so regularly, and a true RW ie Jaden Sancho. I’m also 99% certain that Pogba will leave in the summer, therefore he also needs to be replaced; my choice would be Jack Grealish.

If all of those areas are addressed, in either January or the summer, I then believe we have the possibility to push past Liverpool and City next season. However I do believe this team could finish third, maybe even second and win a trophy (this season) whether that be the FA Cup or Europa league.

I understand if your not sure YET, whether Ole is the right manager too bring us major trophies consistently; But If nothing else, he is the right man to fix the culture and mentality at our football club; He is without a doubt, leading us in the right direction and will leave the club, in a better state than when he took over; Therefore he deserves our backing and credit for doing so.

This team is going somewhere, (which is because of Ole) you would have to be blind or have no football knowledge whatsoever, not to see it, so to all the muppets in the Ole HATE crew; I have just one thing to say.

Back the team and back the manager (win or lose) or f*** off and support another club. BECAUSE YOU AND YOUR NEGATIVITY WON’T BE MISSED

P.S. If Ed Woodward and the United board are sensible, they should go out and ensure the signing of Upamecano NOW this January, by paying his release clause (early). That way RB Leipsig get the money now too invest, plus they get too keep him until the summer, but more importantly, it guarantees us the player.

I’d also like them to do something similar and make enquiries for Ndidi, Grealish and Sancho (or whoever Ole sees has his prime targets) and maybe make a (part payment) early too ensure we get those players as well. Personally I don’t mind waiting because I would rather get the right players in, over signing somebody just for the sake of it.

I’ve had them both for most of the season. Very consistent returns compared to most other options. Might not have a double but SHU are not doing so well this season so they could easily match players with a double.

To call it a roll of a dice is a bit of an over simplification. These players are in form. I think the odds are quite high that Son outscores Rashford or Kane outscores Vardy despite their doubles. They are also the players I’d favour beyond the dgw.

Personally I don't see this as an optional fixture like most here do, Sheffield Utd will get at Spurs and do what most teams recently have done and force them back to defend for a lot of the game. Yes Spurs like to counter but lately they've followed a pattern of giving games a go in the first half (often taking a lead then) and don't finish off the game and then are sitting back for much of the second half struggling to hold on. If you ignore the Leeds game (which is an outlier for a lot of teams anyway), this happened at Palace, Wolves and Fulham last night and to a lesser extent against Liverpool (they still made a few great chances in that game). Again, ignoring the Leeds game their form is actually a bit worrying, with three 1-1 draws and two losses in the last 5 games (minus Leeds).

I've decided to go without Spurs players from this week for a bit (sold Son last week, Kane will be this week), their fixtures are pretty hit and miss for a while. That being said Son and Kane are capable of delivering returns in any game and they certainly will, but I think they'll have a tougher run of things in the next while and prefer what I can do with the money until they learn to kill games or their fixtures lighten up.

My moves totally depend on whether Villa play 0, 1, 2 or even 3 games. If they play 2 then I'll do C most likely.

So it looks like my FPL Cup run has ended early yet again unless Tyrick Mitchell:
    a. plays; and
    b. keeps a clean sheet; and
    c. scores.

It's not going to happen is it?

Choose best 2 options for DGW 18 with point hit (- 4 pts)
    A. Raphinha >> Soucek
    B. Bamford >> Antonio
    C. Kane >> Vardy
    D. Son >> Rashford
    E. Ayling >> Justin

Feel bad for the WC16 players who were patient, kept their chips and got screwed over by postponements. Tough luck in a season of high variance.

    WC18 looks very good though.

    Morning,

Does anyone know when the next big dgw is and possible fixtures?

Trying to weigh up if its worth pulling my planned bb for gw19 due to the obvious changes in fixtures

Big one could be 29, there will be a lot of smaller ones before though.

Worth firing the bb or saving till 29?

Is it worth bringing KDB for -8? Have no City attackers

    Grealish + DCL + Martinez > KDB + Fodder + Areola -8

In the history of fpl, has there ever been a fixture that’s been added to a gameweek that’s already started?!

If not I can’t see Villa Newcastle being added to gwk19 once it’s started. So should he 20 unless confirmed in next 48 hours.

Dont assume with FPL this season. I wouldnt be surprised in the slighest if it was added after the deadline.

They couldn't even pause gameweeks last season! Was nice to get free green arrows though.

GW19 doesn’t start until Saturday morning, and the alternative would require teams to be submitted 3 days before the bulk of the fixtures start.

With only 4 dgw players and no pool or West Ham, tempted to pull the freehit, anyone else with me?

    TAA Coufal Dias Stones
    KDB Salah Grealish Bruno
    Bamford Watkins

Every player has a DGW bar Bamford. Have Antonio to come in 🙁 benching headache! Bench Watkins or Bamford? Or Grealish?

GW19 FH draft. How would this fare?

    Mendy
    Cancelo Stones Coufal
    Salah KDB Bruno Pulisic Soucek
    Vardy Antonio

    4.0; Lowton, Brewster, 3.8

    1. sunzip14

Don't like the Pulisic pick. I would risk Werner & Rashford in place of Vardy & Pulisic if you want a Chelsea player.

Both 50:50. If any I would guess gundogan but foden appears to have higher points ceiling
