Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 21?

The latest Fantasy Premier League captaincy debate has been thrown wide open by recent form and injuries.

After becoming the most captained player in a Gameweek ever – and providing no returns against Sheffield United – Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) and his team will have to bounce back against an improving Arsenal.

As a result, Fantasy managers have already turned towards some more appealing candidates for Gameweek 21.

A number of Manchester City players have made themselves comfortable in this week’s captaincy conversation, alongside some Merseyside assets Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)

As Gameweek’s 21 captaincy debate seems to be one of the most open ones since the start of the new calendar year, we will look into the most appealing options and as always, the analysis will be backed up by the extensive data from Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area. Only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

After scoring 14 points in just 52 minutes against West Bromwich Albion, İlkay Gündoğan (£5.7m) leads the Fantasy Football Scout Captain Poll going into Gameweek 21 with 22.7% of the votes.

The German international is accompanied by two of his teammates in this week’s poll, as Raheem Sterling (£11.5) and Joao Cancelo (£5.9) sit second and fifth respectively.

The remaining two spots are occupied by Harry Kane (£11.3m) and Calvert-Lewin, although the Tottenham Hotspur striker is now a major doubt ahead of Spurs’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion:

“He’s injured in both ankles. To cope with one pain, probably he could (continue), but with both, it’s very painful and sore. He just couldn’t. For Harry to leave a game means it’s not a nothing injury. We don’t know how long (he will be out). We’ll have to see.” – Jose Mourinho

Son Heung-min (£9.8m) and Salah are also players who have gone above the 5.0% threshold in this week’s poll so far, gaining 6.4% and 7.0% of total votes, respectively – although they might end up better supported in light of Kane’s injury.

Meanwhile, last week’s top pick Bruno Fernandes sits 9th with only 3.1% of votes, even behind the Colombian international James Rodríguez (£7.7m, 4.5% of votes).

Best replacements for Zouma and Lindelof? My other defenders are Dias, Holding, Pieters. Cancelo seems like a no brained but I also have Ederson in goal. Would a triple up on City be too much?

A bit lost on what to do with this lot.

    Martinez
    Robertson, Cancelo, Dias
    Salah, Fernandes, Gundogan, Soucek
    Bamford, Antonio, Adams

    Steer; Mitchell, Dallas, Stephens.

    1 FT 8.7 ITB

    A) Stephens -> Son
    B) Adams -> DCL

Rodriguez instead of Son maybe? Son still a good pick without his most creative source Kane?

      Rough
Bruno(c) fail, Bamford 59th minute fail, Kane injury, Areola + Dawson points sitting on my bench

      Smooth
KDB + Benrahama, to Gundogan & Rodriguez -4 for a 16pt profit, also Cancelo haul, Dias, Maguire and some points finally from Wilson helping me to a decent 67-4 for the week

Smooth: 66 (-4). Just about equalling my score of 69 from the DGW. Soucek staying on the majority of benches. Never bench the king.

Rough: 8th captain fail in last 9 gameweeks.

Removed Kane for a hit for the DGW to get Vardy, then removed Vardy for a hit to get Kane this week. Probably need to remove Kane for another hit this week (anyone know if Vardy is fit?)

Despite 7,9 mil in the bank - desicion not to buy Kane for additional -4
Cancelo Captain (with Bruno in the team)
      Raphinha, Grealish, Antonio returns
      GW points: 87(-4)
      rank boost: 68,0k -->18,8k

      Rough:
Zouma not playing another game (Coufal 1 point from bench)

    Bloody Harry Kane!

It's most scary to sell him as Mourinho could randomly play him 😮

Who do you think will play up front for Spurs? And what's the impact on Son?

I'm interested to hear if anyone is avoiding Son now because of Kane being out

Haha, thanks for the hot topic. Surprising.

Jose obviously trusts Son more than the likes Vinicius, and knowing Jose feels like Son will play up top.. but you never know.

A lot of people quoting Son's performance without Kane from before, but this season is different as they've been playing different roles & Kane is supplying Son all the time.

Could see a switch up, but with how well Kane has been playing this season (overall, not just FPL terms) - him missing out is going to affect the team a lot.

I'd be shocked if vinicius doesn't start at Brighton. Despite being the official backup with no real way into the starting 11 he has been excellent whenever he gets an opportunity. He's an explosive goal scorer that gives defences nightmares. He was bought for a lot of money precisely for this scenario, a Kane injury.

He wasn't brought on vs pool for tactical reasons and that was a huge blunder from mourinho. They played without a striker and were completely toothless.

Son is not a striker. He will always go wide and probe. He can't be a fix in the box it isn't his style

Haha yeah maybe not the most detailed Hot Topic ever, but we can hopefully dig into it a bit in the comments.

To be honest, we've been short on Hot Topics lately! So if you (or others) see that something hasn't been covered, like Kane injury, feel free to write a bit of a longer post and flag it using the little flag option 🙂

I totally agree with your comment about lots of the history of Son without Kane coming from a different type of Spurs side. I think Son is still a great option, even if Spurs are a little less fluid. But they could be more fluid it's hard to know.

I would keep Son but Captain Salah. Liverpool have been in terrible form thats why lost to a questionable Manutd side who couldnt keep with even Sheffield! Goes to show how bad Tottenham played having lost to out of form Liverpool

I'd actually argue that the United v Sheffield result was the surprise one, rather than United's good performances against Liverpool.

After doing well in some big games they had a bit of a tired letdown against Sheffield, but they're a good side despite that.

The announcers were a bit short-sighted too I think, saying that it was the shock result of the season: a shock, yes, but let's remember some of the big losses other top 4 teams have had. Liverpool 7-2, for example!

I don't know when we'll get an update but Kane -> DCL feels like the obvious if there's a sniff he may miss Brighton (with Che and Mci in the next three)

I've had a terrible season thus far, so perhaps benching would be more sensible.

I am a bit worried that I have Branthwaite as my 5th bench fodder.

Would it be wise to upgrade Branthwaite to Lascelles (4.2m) just in case of another COVID postponement (I don't want Mitchell)

    Martinez

    Cancelo Stones Coufal KWP Mitchell

    Fernandez Son Salah Saka ESR

    Watkins Kane Antonio

    With £1.6 in bank..
