Why looking at fixture runs after the expected Double Gameweek 26 is important

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser talks us through his Wildcard thoughts.

The Wildcard button is calling me and all I’m waiting for is the confirmed rearranged fixtures before I activate it – although I’m not sure if I’ll go through with it if we don’t get an annoucement before the Gameweek deadline.

This seems like a good time to step back and process information as a lot of us are going to make some key decisions in the next few weeks. With this article, I write about some players and trends that have gained my attention in the last few Gameweeks.

First up, let’s talk about Marcos Alonso (£5.7m). He looked a lot like his old self in the game against Newcastle and mustered five shots, four of which were from inside the box. He is definitely in my Wildcard thinking right now but I very well know that he isn’t exactly nailed. If you do want to roll the dice with Alonso, it is advisable only if you have a deep defensive bench. I get the feeling that he could drop a 15-pointer in any game if he continues in the same attacking vein. It looks like Tuchel is going to persist with the 3-4-3 formation and his comments with regards to Alonso seems particularly encouraging.

There are a couple of other reasons why I like this pick. Outside of a potentially difficult Double Gameweek in 26, Chelsea have a good run of fixtures around it. On top of that, they have posted strong underlying numbers in defence in the last few Gameweeks with only Manchester City conceding fewer shots in the box and big chances in the same period. It is worth mentioning again that if you decide to roll the dice with Alonso, a deep bench in defence is needed. There are safer, more nailed picks like Antonio Rüdiger (£4.6m) in play in case you’re not one to indulge in punts which are not nailed.

One mistake that all of us make is having a Double Gameweek tunnel. More often than not, you will find yourself with a team entirely focused on Gameweek 26 and the players you have picked might not have good fixtures afterwards. Keeping that in mind, I have pasted the Season Ticker below for Gameweek 27 and beyond which might help with some decisions.

There are a few key factors here that should influence your thinking. First up, it is likely that Southampton have a Double Gameweek in this period. Also, it is worth noting that their fixtures after Gameweek 26 are really good as well, which makes me pay closer attention to assets like Danny Ings (£8.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) despite their poor form. I personally expect a better performance from the Saints in the coming weeks because I rate their manager and a lot of their good players are back fit.

A lot of people are not sure about Ings at the moment. For me personally, based on the eye test, he has looked very sharp in the last three Gameweeks and has been fairly unlucky as well. In addition, I still like the Leeds fixture for an attacker, which is why it is worth going there in my opinion.

I have already spoken about the Chelsea fixtures around the potentially difficult Double Gameweek above. In addition to defence, Timo Werner (£9.2m) has been accumulating points at a good rate playing in his preferred left-forward position.

It is also worth noting that Leicester City, Liverpool, Leeds and Aston Villa have decent fixtures post-Gameweek 26, which allows you to carry their assets after the Double Gameweek. The advantage with Leeds players is that they have a good fixture in Blank Gameweek 29. It is possible that Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa could play in Gameweek 29 as well which is something worth considering while making your transfers.

Personally, I am even looking at cheap defensive assets from Brighton and Hove Albion because of two factors. They have good underlying numbers in defence and have decent fixtures in Gameweek 26, as well as Gameweek 29.

For those that are not Wildcarding in Gameweeks 25/26, there is a decent fixture shift in Gameweek 31 and it is potentially a good time to Wildcard then. The notable fixture shifts are as follows:

  • Aston Villa sit bottom of the Season Ticker in the period from Gameweek 31 to Gameweek 38 and a lot of us will be on at least two Aston Villa assets in that period.
  • Arsenal and Wolves have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards and not many of them are in our squads at the moment.
  • It is also worth noting that Spurs, Manchester City, Fulham and Southampton will have a Blank Gameweek 33.

Before ending this article, I want to bring to your notice a few player stats that have caught my eye in the last four Gameweeks:

I hope you find this article useful and it helps you plan better in this very important stage of the season, as every transfer we make needs to be very carefully thought through.

Good luck this Gameweek!

      Why would you WC that...

It's even better than my team overall and I have no desire to WC.

      Roll FT.

Next week you can do Antonio + Coufal > DGW players and BB.

Thanks mate, plan is Antonio and Ings to Kane and Watkins, only way I can get Kane unfortunately. Will leave me with a bench on Pope Bamford Dallas Coufal which I don't think is worth BB?

It's fine! You can also take a hit to do Coufal out. But honestly, I'm struggling to find good DGW defenders. Rudiger maybe...

Rudiger has the worst fixtures of anyone! This is why I'm not going to WC, there's no one good for the bench. Fulham players, WBA players Everton defenders, no Spurs defenders etc

I think you need to think a bit more critically. Chelsea's defense has been really, really impressive so far. 5 clean sheets out of 6. I can definitely see them getting at least 1 CS against Liverpool and United and then the surrounding fixtures are also pretty good.

They also have very low xGC which suggests it's sustainable. City and Chelsea are very far and away the best defenses in the league.

Weird claim considering your post is under Lateriser's article showing Chelsea near the top of the ticker. I went for 2 Chelsea defenders, unfortunately choosing James as one. I'm looking to switch him for Alonso or Azpili to partner Rudiger.

    Pope
    Stones Cancelo Dallas
    Sterling Bruno Son Barnes Raphinha
    Bamford (c) Ings (vc)

    Forster | Maguire Coufal Brewster

Can anyone talk me out of getting Ings on my WC? The double-double is appealing (if it happens), but at 8.4m he’s not cheap, and I could use that money elsewhere. Feel like he might be a trap.

Hoping (praying) the fixtures come out today. If I knew he had a double in 26 it looks a lot more appealing. As you say an easy swap to Watkins, which is who I’d be looking at instead. If I get Watkins now and bench for 25 it’d save some transfers!

      1. Team is playing poor.
      2. Injury prone, never mind playing that amount of games in such a short period of time.
      3. Chelsea and City in the DGWs are certainly NOT excellent fixtures.
      4. Blocks a spot for one of Kane (great DGW), DCL (ditto), or possibly Watkins (ok DGW and good + extra fixtures going forward).
      5. Doesn't play in GW29 if you're not using/don't have your FH.

So my -12 worked out OK, Basically a small red think I dropped 600 places OR, and calculations worked out the 11 points down if I'd made no changes as would have C Gundo as didn't have Sterling so fine margins, wasn't a fail, wasn't a win.

Bit annoyed with myself having a few sherbets last night and then was happy with my changes for this GW already on a -8, but in pure rage removed Sterling for KDB and thought Gundo to JWP was a good idea so now -16 this GW. Don't want to waste my FH, so guess I'm just going to have to role with it.

Really need to stop going on my team after a few bevvys.

Here's a question, start Cancelo or Stones? Stones more likely to start and get 90 v Arsenal?

Start Cancelo and if he’s not fit he’s unlikely to play at all with Stones first def sub

Both. I'd play City defense over Mee in your case no problem. One of them could well miss out and then you'll get Mee off the bench anyway.

    A) Sterling/Antonio > Raph/Ings (-4)
    B) Greal/Antonio > Raph/Ings (-4)
    C) Greal or Sterling > Raph
    D) DCL > Ings
    E) Roll FT

Am I G2G for this week? Captain choice right, bench order too?

    Pope
    Dias - Stones - Shaw
    Salah - Bruno - Gundo - Raphina
    Bamford (c) - Antonio - Ings

Bench: Martinez - Soucek - Coufal - Dier

Looks good. Keeper could go one way or the other but think Pope just about better than Emi.
I'd be tempted to nudge Soucek down that bench but following the recent stats doesn't tend to play out well with him!

Yeah, agreed.. I do however think Burnley are a lot more likely to keep a clean sheet against West Brom compared to villa against Leicester, may come back to bite me but i'm going with my gut!

Humble brag for me here - I'm probably going through my best renaissance in my short-lived FPL career. Was on 1.94M OR GW18, and have made it to 421k OR by GW24, without using a single chip. I've got all chips intact right now.

Goes to show that the good players who are further down than they would like to be - that they can get back into the right zones, and it may not take that long to achieve.

      Well played!
I consistently advise against going to maverick in an attempt to chase rank. Chucking chips and hits at it requires a huge amount of luck to come off - slow and steady wins the race.

Don't focus too much on one week. Grealish and Son will almost certainly both have doubles in 26, and both play in 29. Your rivals will have to be taking hits or going without

I got so lucky this week...

Accidentally left cap on DCL and vice on Fernandes (would have been Gundo if I'd saved my team properly).
Accidentally left Digne on the bench after bringing him in for the DGW.

Somehow still ended up on 95 with a green arrow.

Is Soucek -> Raphinha IN and DCL -> Kane IN worth -4?
Or Soucek -> Raphinha is enough and bring Kane next week

Yes but with DCL, Bamford and Watkings trio upfront I struggle who to remove to get Kane for DGW 😀

    Hiya

Is there a reason that DGW caps like gundo don't default to the VC for a second non appearance?

    1. DGW blindness is for Kinnea…

Because that’s the worst idea one could suggest and that’s always been the way it is. . People captain say Bruno against West Brom or Auba against Leeds. These are better fixtures than the ones Gundo had. Just cause Gundo had 2 games, doesn’t mean he should get points for not playing the 2nd game.

This isn't a complaint thread. I didn't cap gundo btw. I'm asking what the purpose of a vice cap is, If for example they also had a dgw, if not to replace the cap

I'd view the second game as a bonus not something you're entitled to as captaining a DGW player.

Part of the risk of picking any DGW player is they might actually only play once. If we allow double subs/captains to compensate for that it'd be needlessly complicated.
