Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Blank Gameweek 29?

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with a much smaller pool of viable captains than usual this weekend.

Blank Gameweek 29 features just four matches and only one team currently in the top flight’s top six.

Unsurprisingly, Harry Kane (£11.5m) has emerged as the people’s favourite ahead of a trip to Aston Villa but Sunday’s injury to Son Heung-min (£9.5m) has caused some doubts.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help inform your armband decision.

This uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area so only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

As you can see, Kane’s lead in the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll is a hugely significant one.

After producing five attacking returns in the last four Gameweeks, the Spurs forward has attracted the support of 60.1% of voters.

That lends him a majority of 53.7 percentage points over the second-placed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m).

The Arsenal man missed Gameweek 28’s north London derby because of a disciplinary issue although media reports suggest it has been resolved with Mikel Arteta in a positive fashion.

More importantly, across his last four starts, Aubameyang has six goals to his name.

Double Gameweek 25 teams: Leeds - best FPL players, form, fixtures and stats 2

Raphinha (£5.6m) is not far behind in third-place this week with 6.1% of voters selecting him as the best captain for Blank Gameweek 29.

Fulham’s defence has largely improved recently, and Raphinha hs blanked in each of his last three matches, although his most-recent purple patch was not that long ago.

Between Gameweeks 14 and 25, he produced four goals and six assists.

Despite recording two double-figure hauls in the last four matches, Gareth Bale (£9.6m) is backed by only 3.7% in the captain poll.

The Bale fitness latest as his impact on Son and Kane in FPL is assessed

His 56th-minute substitution against Arsenal is likely to be at the back of many Fantasy minds. Bale has not made it past the 69-minute mark in any of his last four Premier League starts.

Even with one attacking return in the last 11 matches, Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) has managed to creep into the captain poll’s top five this week. 3.6% are backing the Fulham winger, perhaps with an eye of exploiting Leeds’ defence who have conceded 1.6 goals per game this season.

Jesse Lingard (£6.1m), Stuart Dallas (£5.1m), Patrick Bamford (£6.7m), Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) and Leandro Trossard (£5.7m) complete the top 10.

Depends who you are removing and whether you need Cresswell in GW30. Without that info it's impossible to answer sensibly.

Best options would say Veltman for 29, Cresswell for longer term - up to you with Cresswell as you'd only be saving 0.2 mill. Going Dawson/Veltmann may mean you could upgrade to Bale/Son later if you wanted to. Alternatively Rudiger could be an option?

How about this for a FH team:

    Sanchez (Areola)
    Cresswell, Dunk, Reguilon, Dallas (Veltman)
    Raphinha, Bale, Lingard, Auba (Lookman)
    Kane, Bamford (Antonio)

Tough choices on the bench as I feel triple Brighton could work out and Antonio maybe a shout instead of triple Leeds?

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 10 days ago

      Not keen on triple Leeds

Think I'd back WH to have more goal opportunities and would play Antonio ahead of Bam.

I'd also consider either Trossard or Wellbeck. Everyone talks about Brighton defence but their attack is equally underperforming stats and Newcastle defence is fairly horrid.

      1. Arfaish
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 10 days ago

Yeah I agree, not keen on a triple Leeds against a decent Fulham side defensively. Bamford mostly in to cover him as everyone non-fh will have him.

Ill have a think about Brighton Midfield assets too, probably Trossard but not sure who I start them over. Would have to be one of the defenders.

Surely you have so many template options you can afford to go marginally off piste with no Bamford. Recent Leeds and Fulham suggests that you'll be a single return out anyway if he does score.

  13. Ruth_NZ

In case anyone is thinking that lightning can't strike twice with Dunk it might be worth noting that he has already scored twice inside a week this season (West Ham & Wolves). Last season (19/20) he scored in consecutive games against United and Liverpool, either side of an international break, and the season before (18/19) he also did it, against Everton & Cardiff that time. Back in 15/16 too, goals in consecutive games against Birmingham & Forest (in the Championship).

Obviously for a defender to score two games in a row is a bit unusual but he's Brighton's captain and seems a lead-from-the-front kind of of guy. I wouldn't even put it past him to take a penalty if they get one (after their recent troubles from the spot), he does take some FKs after all.

Veltman is very much a pick for those who have dived deep into the rabbit hole of meaningless stats. Not a bad pick, because Brighton have a strong CS chance and he is cheaper, but not the best. 🙂

So you're telling me my Veltman 50:50 pick over Dunk will cost about 20 points over the 2 weeks then?

      Dunk for me

    4. Nanoelektronicar

Guilty on Veltman, especially: 1) I had the money last week, 2) it would have been two week punt anyway so didn't have to bench for more than one week (United). And if Burn doesn't come back, he would end up playing CB anyway, so all those stats mean nothing anymore. Poor decision on my part, but stats really swayed that decision.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 10 days ago

Yeah, that Burn injury really screws it. But Brighton looked much better with 3atb anyway so they may well repeat that on Saturday whether Burn is passed fit or not.
