The FPL squad I’d pick if I was playing my Wildcard in Gameweek 31

Many Wildcards are being activated as fixture swings abound in Gameweek 31. Scoutcast regular Seb, who finished 389th in the world last season, talks us through who he’d pick if he was deploying the chip this week.

For many, Gameweek 31 has been identified as the week to play their second Wildcard. The teams we built to navigate Gameweek 29 generally had one final ‘good’ fixture left in Gameweek 30, after which there is now an edge to be found in switching your squad up and targeting the season run-in.

The final nine Gameweeks of the season can very roughly be split into two batches based on favourable fixtures: Gameweek 30 to Gameweek 34 and Gamweek 35 to Gameweek 38. There are also the remaining Double Gameweeks to keep in mind, principally Tottenham Hotspur’s in Gameweek 32.

Whilst I do not personally have my second Wildcard – it was used in Gameweek 24 and has since halved my rank – identifying the ideal 15-man squad will be invaluable to my own planning as I attempt to compete with those still holding the chip and improve my standing once again.

Note that this piece was written using statistics up to and including Gameweek 29 and does not include data from Easter weekend.

The Team

I have used my current team as the starting point for this, which means we have £104.8m worth of players and £0.9m in the bank to play with. Some of these players will have been purchased prior to Gameweek 31 at below their current price. This should give us a fair view of what is ‘achievable’ for most managers at this time.

The building blocks of this team are:

  • Hold – Players that will stay with the team for the remainder of the season
  • Twist – Players that are included based on fixtures and will be swapped out for more favourable options as appropriate
  • Efficiency – Minimising planned transfers whilst ensuring routes to players of various value and opportunity are left open

Morning. What changes would you make to this wildcard?

I'm happy to give Bruno a miss. So if I downgrade vardy to antonio or dcl, can't immediately see what to do with the spare cash

    No other chips. Thanks

    Mendy forster
    Taa azpi shaw coady konsa
    Salah son jota mount esr

Nice selection. I guess risk is security of starts for ESR and Nacho longer term - so Vardy to Antonio might give you funds for ESR to Maddi (maybe not now but in future)

Cheers....yes had considered vardy to antonio or dcl and upgrading esr to madison

That creates benching headache tho....maybe not such a bad thing though considering season nearly over.

Other player I have my eye on in greenwood instead of mount.....but not sure greenwood ge time. Thanks

Greenwood struggling for confidence a little bit this season. Given Chelsea have better fixtures and Mount should be nailed I think that's the right call (hence why he's in mine below).

Agree with benching headache. Guess question is whether Nacho retains his place with Maddi back

My rank is 300k. So I'm willing to risk not getting a 50 per cent owned player ad its not going to help me move up much

Nothing to lose. And his price messes up my balance....

Saiss, Dias, Shaw should be nailed. Rudgier should be (assuming the Kepa bust up is truly "dealt with"). Phillips is a punt but at 4m less worried

True. I just think going without representation from the best defence in the league is a bit silly. Appreciate rotation risk but that's why I've aimed for certainty of starts amongst the others - or perhaps I haven't based on other comments

Having Dallas and Raph maybe not ideal - you'll be playing them against United whilst you Bench Kane, Dias and Gundo in 33 (although 2FT before then).

What about Son for Spurs DGW? Vardy to Nacho to fund and then upgrade Raph?

      1. WVA

Thanks mate, when is the Spurs dbgw?

Had Dallas Raph Bamford since their original price and they've been amazing value and they have great fixtures after 33 so don't want rid of them all. Thinking of BB in 38 with them.

32 - Everton and Soton so a Kane/Son double up will be popular.

Appreciate money tied up in Leeds and that you'd want back - just think it's risky for the 4-5 weeks of poor fixtures in next 8

Easy to fit Antonio due to lack of options upfront, that isnt the case with midfield.

How is this for a WC, mates?

    Kane, Vardy, Vydra

      Notes:
I still have Bruno in my team as I got him for 10.5 early on. However Im ready to sacrifice him in order to get Vardy upfront.

Stones can and probably will be switched to Shaw

Im betting that Liverpool wont rotate so much and will have stamina to play 2 games every week, which is risky...

      Anything else you would change?

Your question is probably why not Nacho? I dont rate him, with Maddy back especially. One two bad games and hes back to a rotation playsr for me.

        1. Holmes
          • 10 Years

Nah, the question is why Vardy. Not compulsory to have one of them.

            • 7 Years

Rate him to get hauls in their nice fix-s. Maddy is back to provide creativity. No Europe.

Im a United fan. Bruno seems tired and nervous since January. He still contributes but aint the same currently. United have also Europe. And not the best incoming fixtures for big hauls. I just hope they continue to scrape wins like now.

Those who have fh left. When are you planning to use it? For me gw33 looks optimal as I'll have 3 spurs and 2 ManC.

Also few tasty looking fixtures like Liverpool-Newcastle and Leicester-Palace

Kane & Son will be my only blankers in 33 so at the mo I'm sketching in the possible DGW near the end to make sure the fans can see the games. I'm fine playing it in the final GW too because my H2H is going down to the wire and I play my key -only- rival in the final GW.

I have dragged Dcl,Digne and Targett far too long and waiting that dgw to happen.

Crellin has many Twitter threads on the potential upcoming DGWs and BGWs. Check my history for links. Good luck.

Would you WC this now or wait a week or 2 (got 1 FT + FH & TC left as well)?

    Martinez (Johnstone)
    Dias Digne James (Coufal Dallas)
    Salah Bruno Gundogan Lingard Raphinha
    Kane DCL (Bamford)

Can't see a decent move without taking a hit here. Go boring with Dallas > Saiss/Phillips or punty with Bamford > Wood/Nacho?

I think you could wait a week with that lot, but be aware a lot of people are WC-in this week so price changes could affect your planning.

Looking at doing a BB in GW32 to offset TC Kane captainers?

    Good strategy?

Chasing 30 points lead. If the gap is still something like that go maverick in from gw34 onwards or should I act now?

    Got 3-4 differentials atm

You could make that up in a week, play your own game, if it doesn't close think again in 34.

I cant decide if it's worth bringing in TAA as I seem to be making too many sacrifices, please take a look at WC drafts

    Mendy / Forster

    TAA. Shaw Rudiger Coady Dawson

    Salah Bruno Son Jota (Burke)

    Kane Antonio Iheanacho

Without TAA, then back line becomes
    Philips Shaw Rudiger Stones Creswell
    And
    Burke becomes Raphinha/Neto

Stick with TAA, he's got something to prove and the fixtures are great.

“... There are also the remaining Double Gameweeks to keep in mind, principally Tottenham Hotspur’s in Gameweek 32 ....”. Seb, I think you missed the potential DGW35 and BGW36 when you wrote your FFS article. Could be pivotal. Crellin has some great Twitter threads on both of these weeks. Good luck.

Yep fair. Although with DGW35 currently pretty unknowable, tough to plan for that without damaging the team in the meantime.

Yup, optimal analytical choices seem to be, (i.) WC in 31 or (ii.) wait to WC later to better manage the potential DGW and BGW. Nasty choice.

    A) Maddison -for the differential (have Vardy).
    B) Jota -template, but tripled up with Salah & TAA.

Leicester's fixtures are just too good to ignore but worried about Nacho's minutes. Maddi to Jota is an easy swap when the fixtures turn for the blues in GW36.
