How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Gameweek 31

A significant chunk of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers played their Wildcards in Gameweek 31.

26.4% of them pulled the trigger on a new squad ahead of Friday’s deadline, the largest to do so all in one Gameweek since the second Wildcard became available.

As a result, the template of players at this level of the world rankings took a sizeable shift as we prepare for the final Gameweeks of 2020/21.

As you can see, the Wildcard was by far the most-used chip among the top 10k in Gameweek 31.

Just 0.06% went for the Bench Boost, 0.05% Free Hitted and 0.01% played the Triple Captain.

Crucially, the second Wildcard has now been deployed by 87.1% of the top 10k, meaning just 12.9% of them have it left to play between Double Gameweek 32 and Gameweek 38.

It also means that 46.6% of the top 10k have exhausted their chip supply with seven Gameweeks left to go this season.

41.0% have played three of theirs while only 11.2% still have two left to deploy.

Anyone marginally outside the top 10k with a healthy number of chips still intact will certainly fancy their chances of breaking into the upper echelon over the season run-in.

Unsurprisingly, 81.7% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers went with budget goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£4.0m) while roughly two-thirds were content with Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) as a set-and-forget option.

With two fixtures to look forward to in Double Gameweek 32, Harry Kane (£11.7m) was the most fashionable player in any position in such squads, selected by 99.5%.

Diogo Jota (£6.9m) was not far behind the Spurs man, convincing 93.9% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers to make use of his services between now and Gameweek 38.

84.4% have retained faith in Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) while 79.7% have gone for Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), which means 36.6% of the entire top 10k are doubled-up on the Egyptian and Jota.

Despite a tough fixture against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, Son Heung-min (£9.4m) sits in 60.2% of top-10k Wildcard squads while 70.8% of such managers are convinced Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) can still offer value even without Michail Antonio (£6.7m) in the team.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.8m) has done enough to convince 88.5% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers that he can hold his place in Leicester’s attack and continue his scoring form, currently with five goals across his last three matches.

Antonio Rüdiger (£4.7m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and Rob Holding (£4.2m) are the three-most popular defenders among top 10k Wildcarders.

It is also interesting to see what impact the Wildcarding managers have had on the overall template among the top 10k, and where they have not.

For example, Patrick Bamford (£6.6m) has clung to 46.9% backing at this level while Iheanacho’s ownership in the entire top 10k is 37.7%.

Likewise, Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) remains the most fashionable defender among the top 10k with the support of 42.7%.

Meanwhile, Jota has managed to become the second-most-popular midfielder at this level.

Salah is the key captain this week having convinced 46.8% of the top 10k to hand him the armband for a home meeting with Aston Villa.

Despite facing a Manchester United side that have become 0-0 specialists in the big games, Kane has earned 13.8% support for the Gameweek 31 captaincy.

The Manchester City options are less popular, even against Leeds, largely due to the uncertainty about who Pep Guardiola will start at the Etihad Stadium.

Just 9.2% have gone for a De Bruyne captaincy while 6.1% selected Raheem Sterling (£11.3m).

Kane and Salah are the two players with more than 100% effective ownership in the top 10k for Gameweek 31.

However, neither one is miles clear, the Spurs forward boasting 111.3% and Salah on 106.1%.

Asking advice. I have my 3xC left. Spurs have double gw next week and I have Kane & Son. Would you play it? Kane or Son? Or save it for later? Is there a potentially better gw to play it coming up? Thankful for feedback...

Take a punt on WC by going Neto over Lingard and of course it had to end that way.

Pathetic amount of luck needed in fpl, it’s beyond a joke

Ouch, though I think its too early to say it was a complete fail until we see the West Ham game. I've gone for Saka over Lingard, not expecting much (maybe not even a start) but still hopeful

    Bamford or Watkins.
Which of these would you keep? I will bench for the next few GW's anyway.

One of them needs to go for Ihaenacho next GW alongside Kane in a 352.

Yeah, unlucky for Neto owners, especially those who brought him with FTs.

Defense was the main attraction I guess... Had Patricio and Coady on shortlist.

    Pick one

    A Bruno Neto/Bowen/Raphinha
    B Son Mount/Greenwood

If i go A can get Son in 34.
If B then Bruno can come in 36.

Peform well or not, either way FPL is 30% skill and 70% luck imo. FPL winners, despite being good players, not being anywhere near the top 1000 regularly in previous seasons goes to show luck is a huge factor. May be even more than skill.

I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of your own posts.

Personally I am quite happy to see Neto and Aguero as unlucky picks this week and not beat anyone over it.

An off pace, out of contract Aguero who’s been suffering injuries all season is a different situation to an in form Neto who has copped his first injury of the season.

Happy to receive stick back but also happy to defend my Neto pick

Isnt this strategy more for the start of the season when money is tight?

He also scored in each of the two previous games (before blanking v runaway leaders). Looking at the upcoming fixtures, a good record v poor teams will stand him in good stead for a few returns

Iirc he has 9 goals in his last 10 games.
Which is phenomenal given his previous record.
After watching some Leicester games I feel he's getting on the end of good chances that Vardy used to previously. (Which Barnes will I guess once he comes back) so I wnet with it.
You're right this strategy is useful at the start when budget is tight...

Nacho is a major trap imo. In terms of both form and playing time(once Maddison and Barnes are 100%). Thinking of going Vardy over him next week.

“Not a good player” is waaaay too one dimensional an assessment - FPL is at least two dimensional, if not three or four

Plus he doesn’t need to be “good” (whatever that means) he just needs to do even half of what he’s already just done against Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield, Man Utd through a fixture run that reads:

      - Under strength West Ham (minus their spine in Rice, Ogbonna, Antonio)
      - West Brom
      - Palace
      - Newcastle
      - Southampton

Price-tag, fixtures, form and injuries (both internal at Leicester, and external in Antonio) all in his favour - very understandable punt imo

Especially given the dearth of striker options at the minute

              I don't think it's about striker. They play 4/5 defenders + 2/3 CDM's
Only 2/3/4 attacking players on the pitch.
Only score on set plays or counters. Don't creat anything to give strikers some chance to score.
Yesterday William Jose scored one when Podence put a cross in. Sadly it was offside.
Strikers also not decent I agree although they don't creat enough Chances. Simply negative tactics ...

All of the Strikers (3) + their Full backs are ultra attacking.
They're found out this season though (I see why you asking that 😉 )
They also need creativity from middle of the pitch. Maybe that's why they got Thiago....

I Guess it’s good experience for him to get some game time now, but ultimately you’d think Wolves wouldn’t have wanted him to have been exposed to this much game time so young, whilst he’s still growing into the game and all...

Didn’t say he was not meant to play in first team at all, just this season. Just saying it seems to me like wolves would have had the luxury of letting him come off the bench for Jiminez, rather him having been thrown in the deep end so soon. No way he starts over a healthy Jiminez at his age if they’re both fit.

Bit more measured here. He was bought as a hot property, for no small fee, but as you rightly say not to be immediately put in as sole striker, would have played a good understudy role to Jimenez. But it's best to know a bit about him if you're going to talk about him on a public forum talking about football

Try using DuckDuckGo app as your internet browser on mobile. I use it and don’t get adds on this site, it’s much better than the internet browser your phone comes with whether it be safari or what not

    On WC

    A Son TAA
    B Bruno Philips

Would want Bruno for 32-33(Wont cap though) . If i go A then I have a plan to get Bruno in 36 via Vardy. If i go B i will most likely swap Bruno to Son(SHU) in 34.

    Thoughts?

Who do you think scores more between 32-33 son or Bruno?

Bruno between 32-33. But having said that TAA will mostly outscore Philips during that time.

Going Son saves a transfer over getting him again in 34 for Bruno.

Hmmm yeah I agree, it’s tough tbh.
Maybe A in that case, I agree Bruno will be tough to go without, but on the basis that soon United won’t be able to go up/down the table they may become complacent in the league and worry more about Europe. Whilst spurs will fight 100% every week in the league. Shame son has no form though, that’s what makes it hard.

Doubt he gets rested but I’m considering waiting for their Sheffield game in 34 to use it

I’m in catch up mode so my initial thinking is I captain Kane like everyone else in my ML during the blank week, get no net loss or benefit from it. then use it on a differential like Salah in later weeks and just hope by then he has form etc etc and I catch up a bit. may change my mind of course

This is silly tbh, assuming youre in "catch up mode" for an end of season result and not just a GW in isolation. If Kane scores more in his DGW than your Salah SGW then your net gain is more regardless of others captaincy choice.

        It's a trophy bro.
Spurs haven't won any for years !
If they seal Southampton early, I won't be surprised if he takes Son Kane off.
WHU are going off the boil atm so top 4 might not be that difficult to get...

Agree that they want to win a trophy and yes they could be subbed early against Soton but can't see them being benched from the start.
Chelsea & Pool still above them so Top 4 isn't going to be easy. Also if not Top 4 they'd want Europa atleast. They desperately need the money from TV.

"WHU are going off the boil atm"?

Last time I looked we won a game away from home 3-2?

Reports of our "demise" would seem to be a bit premature 😛

Does anyone want a Vardy goal today? This stat should provoke one. The same comparison provoked KdB to up his scoring rate 🙂

Vardy goal from open play = one in 355 minutes
Benteke goal from open play = one in 245 minutes
