The Lacazette injury latest as budget forward Nketiah waits on first-team chance

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) | Josh Maja (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Daniel Ceballos (£4.7m) | Mario Lemina (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Ceballos x3 Maja x2 Nketiah x1

A last-minute Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) goal broke Fulham hearts as Scott Parker’s side let more points – and another clean sheet – slip away.

Recent Fantasy interest in the Cottagers has mostly revolved around their excellent keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.6m), with his 5.0% ownership enduring a third straight clean sheet wipe-out, the last two involving late, late goals.

A Lack Of Lacca

But it was indicative of a generally poor match that the biggest FPL news involved an injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) who, with 10.5% ownership, was easily the most popular player on display – even more so after attracting 270,000 transfers in ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

The striker had scored four goals in his last four starts, only to limp off in the 70th minute on Sunday, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delivering a ‘wait and see’ verdict after the game.

We’ll have the scan on Tuesday, see the extent of the injury and the timeline to it. I don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know the extent of it.

Arteta’s attacking options were already limited by an injury to Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.3m) bout of malaria, meaning a second straight league start for Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m).

The manager spoke about the need to rotate following Thursday’s Europa League tie and he was true to his word, with his most surprising move replacing the 7.3%-owned Bernd Leno (£5.0m) with Mat Ryan (£4.1m) because the latter ‘trains like a beast’.

All that training led to zero saves and no clean sheet either for the Australian, and it is the Lacazette development that could hurt the most Fantasy managers.

Then again, more Europa League-based rotation and upcoming games against Everton and Chelsea aren’t exactly boosting the appeal of the Gunners’ assets anyway.

Fast Eddie

At least the Frenchman’s replacement, Nketiah, thrived to earn the praise of his manager.

He always offers his best. Today he scored a goal, he had another two important chances and he’s always a threat in front of goal.

Fulham’s one and only shot on target came from Josh Maja‘s (£5.3m) penalty. Parker’s side have now scored just four goals in their last eight matches and haven’t managed more than one in a fixture since Gameweek 24.

The problem for Fantasy managers is that the Cottagers’ previous defensive resilience is an equally distant memory – having kept five clean sheets in seven matches up to Gameweek 27, they’ve not managed a single one since.

Parker might not have given up the ghost just yet:

No chance, absolutely no chance have we lost hope. Why would there not be belief? Of course, we are disappointed, I’m gutted, the last two weeks have been a real kick in terms of that.

We wake up tomorrow morning, put the gloves back on and go again, keep fighting, and try and pick up points.

But a Blank Gameweek 33 is followed by trips to Chelsea and Manchester United over the final five fixtures, suggesting Fantasy managers are unlikely to be moved by Parker’s fighting talk.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin (Pepe 68), Holding, Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny (Partey 68), Ceballos; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 70).

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Cavaleiro (Bryan 84), Zambo Anguissa, Lemina, Lookman (Reed 69); Maja (Loftus-Cheek 77), De Cordova-Reid.

What happens to FPL given ESL. If it were to shut down how would you as a site adapt to ESL?

Feels weird to be thinking about my FPL team when the very fabric of the sport is being ripped apart, but following a GW31 WC, I have 2 ft's and the ability to go for a punt in midfield to replace Son (assuming my injured players are all ok).

Which midfielder would you select as a replacement? Up to £9.7m available. Would be a 1 week punt if I bring Son back for GW34, unless you think there's someone I could bring in and hold?

What should those with a bench boost and wc left be hoping for? Is there any chance of a substantial double?

As a lifelong Wimbledon fan I remember well dear Sam Hamman warning of things like this Super League stuff back in the late 80's early 90's.
It is pure greed and selfishness of rich clubs only wanting to get richer at the expense of others.

I'd piss myself laughing if they were all reduced to zero points.

I'd kick them out of the league and give Leicester or West Ham the title.

Yes why not. A smaller club that gets some success against the odds without being bankrolled deserves success. We had it briefly in the 80's and 90's and were vilified for it.

West Ham have been immense this season. Sheffield Utd last season.

A points deduction would be more fun

If you deducted points evenly to ensure that City didn't win the title then a few of the others would start life in the championship with a fairly hefty negative balance too carry forward.

someone here mentioned 20 points deduction for City/united. That is way to few for City not to win the league anyway, it would put Leicester at 56 and City at 54. Probably 30 or more points deduction would be required for Man City not to win the league

Yep I was thinking you'd need to deduct around 30 points from City to give Leicester the title. That'd relegate Spurs and Arsenal for almost certain and leave Liverpool in a fight with West Brom

Covid lockdown taught me there's more important things to invest my time in then watching sport teams and athletes that couldn't care less about me and the majority of their supporters.
Won't bother to stay up late and watch a 90 minute EPL match anymore when I can wake up the next morning and watch a 25 minute mini match if the score line is interesting.
I will watch US sports come playoff time if I have nothing else to do and there's a good match on, but that's because it works as they're on at a good time for me to watch (time zone). I try and watch my teams games in person as my country has crowds back, but I don't get as excited in doing that like I used to

Since the CL went to BT I've not watched a single game. I used to love catching a Tues night CL game on the TV, getting the chance to see our English clubs play in Europe and to see some of the major European teams play.

With the move of the CL to BT, I've not watched any European football. I think that's a shame although admittedly, I'm not the target audience - I was adding any value in doing so, I wasn't buying any merchandise or driving revenue towards any of the clubs involved, I was merely a football fan doing what football fans do, enjoying good (and often bad) football.

The concept of the ESL feels like a giant leap deep down this treacherous path.

The biggest disaster through all this is they named the competition the Super League. How can you go from a great name like the Champions League to Super League... Talk about a massive downgrade!
Not to mention there's already Super League rugby and the Greek league is also called the Super League.
Something like Ultimate League would've been a much more fitting name for it imo.

      IPL and NFL say hi.

Don't tell me the IPL and NFL are crap. Just because not everyone enjoys cricket and american football does not take away from the hundreds of millions that do and watch the IPL and NFL. There is no sport that has the 100% support of all the people.

Yeah maybe they will change the rules to add a wicket into the goal, or make the goalposts into rugby posts and teams get a field goal after each real goal - just imagine the commercial potential!!!

You can joke, but I enjoyed watching the genius of AB De Villiers and Glenn Maxwell yesterday. The IPL has raised the standard of cricket (360 shot making, bowlers have had to become more accurate and have more variety, fielding standards have improved). It has also allowed for the development of young stars. Players like Pant would not be playing on the international stage without the IPL.

Definitely, this is why we need to be more like cricket

Hopefully they will go with the wicket in the goal idea - are there any other good aspects of cricket they could add in do you think?

How about the goalkeeper gets a big bat and can use it to save a penalty?

The comparison with the IPL doesn't work

The draw of that competition is the nature of 20 20 cricket over longer forms. That is the sole reason for its success - few people take any interest in the actual franchises - they are almost completely irrelevant. The proposed Super League is almost completely inverse. The game stays the same, the draw is the name of the franchises.

For the Super League to replicate the IPL the entertainment factor would have to ratchet up several notches . Why would it? There would be a load of dead games and as Max says the games could easily become glorified friendlies.

You are also assuming that football fans are going to instantly stop being tribal. Football is the most tribal of sports.

It works in the sense that there is no relegation in the IPL or NFL.

Too much of this is being viewed from the perspective of European fans of the clubs involved and the fans of the clubs not involved.

But the fans in Asia, US etc will get on board when Real Madrid vs Liverpool is being played in Jakarta etc.

And the fans of the clubs not in the ESL are an irrelevance because they (in the main) dislike the clubs involved anyway. Those fans don't want Man Utd to do well in the current league structure. They just want them in the league for prestige and to increase the money their clubs get if their own clubs do well.

I think this is highly misguided. The IPL and the NFL are driven by an enormous, avid domestic market. This fandom is the foundation of any exportability they have.

England is not America or India. If they put international fans first, the domestic interest will die and so, ultimately, will interest abroad. It may work for 5 years but will destroy the sport in 20.

              • 7 Years

Will domestic interest really die though?

I remember when the Glazers took over Man Utd. All these commentators were saying it would be the death of Man Utd. The fans did their 'green and gold' thing and they set up FC United of Manchester.

I now see Man Utd are still one of the most supported clubs in England and the world. They are also one of the richest clubs in the world.

There are some diehard fans that will stop supporting Man Utd (or Chelsea or whoever). But the majority won't.

Look at Covid-19 in the UK. All the 'clap for carers' stuff. What has happened in the UK since? Where is the substance for the NHS (loads of increased funding, pay gone up substantially etc)? I don't see it. The majority of people will just let it go. Hell, Boris Johnson and the Conservatives have been leading in pretty much every poll since the last General Election.

Generally, when things change, most (not all) people accept it and it becomes part of the status quo.

The NFL comparison also needs working on 🙂

The NFL is currently expanding the number of franchises not reducing them to make one super competition. Each year franchises get a variety of fixtures and no two seasons look the same.

There too the draw is tribal support of your local/traditional team. A Jets fan is still always going to be a Jets fan and the Patriots will always be hated 🙂

And who is to say the ESL won't expand the 'franchises' and change the format in future? You have to start somewhere. The NFL started with a handful of teams and looked nothing like it does today. I doubt the IPL will look like it does today in 30 years time.

And will Man Utd fans really stop supporting Man Utd? Maybe some will, but I doubt the majority will.

Oh so now you think they'll expand the number of franchises. That would of course instantly lower the number of Liverpool Real Madrid match ups per season, the concept of which is the sole driver behind this.

The driver is to get as few teams as possible playing each other all the time with some makeweights to add numbers. If anything it is much more likely the Super League will reduce down to 12 clubs excluding the obvious makeweights now and adding PSG and Bayern.

Three leagues of 4, two leagues of 6 or one of 12 is the question 🙂

At the moment that is the driver. But as I said this is a starting point. You have to start somewhere. Maybe they will reduce the number of franchises eventually. I don't know.

All I know is that things change and not necessarily always for the worse.

I also know that in life there is usually a significant strength of feeling early on at new ventures, before eventually it gets accepted by the public (the majority) that this is the way things are.

As I said above, look at the 'clap for carers' stuff and Covid-19. The Tories are still going on with their funding proposals, their minimal pay rises etc. Where is the public now?

Some such European Super League is at some stage inevitable.

Will it be a financial success? Probably but not inevitably. The Packer circus is the counter example to IPL.

Will it produce significantly greater entertainment? I very much doubt it. Advocates of it misunderstand the draw of football and how leagues work.

Will it last? No. It too will have its time in the sun but then will be replaced by a world league with nothing clubs in England being replaced by Chinese and American clubs.

Will national leagues survive? Yes. They'll likely become more interesting as a result.

What your point is about clap for carers is I can't be bothered to try and work out.

My point on 'clap for carers' is this.

Today you have all these commentators, fans etc. saying they hate the ESL

In 5 years time, if the ESL is up and running, the same commentators, fans etc, will be watching the ESL and saying how great it is etc.

                  People are fickle.

So a two month initiative which was always temporary is equivalent to what is a life long passion for many people.

I've seen some bad arguments on here but you've just taken the biscuit for an absurd comparison.

It is not absurd. It shows how strength of feeling dissipates and the people are more interested in short-term easy things than substance behind it. More examples:

"Take back control" (control of what?)
"Brexit means Brexit" (what did Brexit actually mean at that time. Noone could define it?)

Look at the public's view of Brexit now. The majority are apathetic. They want to move on.

The majority did 'clap for carers' and what happened? Has the strength of feeling translated into more funding for the NHS. Has it led to significantly improved working conditions and pay for NHS staff or care staff? The people are once again apathetic to it.

The same will happen with the ESL if it takes off. 'I hate the ESL' today. 5 years time there will be apathy and most will still follow it / take some interest in it.

How about 'Grenfell'? What about the strength of feeling against how that was allowed to happen and how the people were treated?

It has largely dissipated. You barely see Grenfell on the news now. There has been no justice for those people nor the people who are paying thousands still because their cladding is unfit.

What about Windrush? Look at the outcry. People still haven't been paid compensation and the compensation is miserly.

The apathy of people runs strong.

Give it a year of Arsenal, Spurs & Juventus bombing & finishing bottom of the sUpEr lEaGuE table without being relegated, while one of the “promoted” 5 teams play well, earn a high finish & still gets relegated to preserve the founding members & people will be laughing at the ridiculousness of it

Agree Maximus, I'd like to see two teams enter the Coliseum with only one leaving.

This makes more sense. Improving the product, not just changing the format.

      Oh quite

The other point is that by December clubs like Milan Arsenal and Spurs will be fielding second string teams as any theoretical interest they'd have in it would be dead. That's before you add the notional other teams who could qualify for it.

The big hope is that Karl Heinz Rummenigge stays strong. He could pretty much kill this. The competition would make little or no sense without Bayern. I don't see that PSG ownership will keep out of the proposed money fest.
