Premier League fixture announcement awaited after Leicester reach FA Cup final

Leicester City will play Chelsea in this year’s FA Cup final after the Foxes defeated Southampton on Sunday.

From a Fantasy perspective, this will have ramifications next month.

As things stand, the final of England’s premier cup competition clashes with Gameweek 37 in Fantasy Premier League – but a free midweek follows, which would neatly accommodate the league meeting between (coincidentally) Chelsea and Leicester City currently scheduled for May 15.

But, such is life and the nature of this rollercoaster FPL season, there is an expectation that something different entirely will occur.

It’s all to do with the planned return of fans to Premier League matches, which can only happen after May 17.

Nothing has yet been confirmed by the Premier League but the Athletic suggest:

The schedule has been readjusted to push the 36th round of fixtures — originally scheduled for midweek kick-offs on May 11 and 12 — to the weekend of May 15 and 16.

Any fixtures that will be displaced by the FA Cup final on May 15 will be moved to May 11 or 12.

Matches for the 37th round of fixtures are now due to take place on May 18 and 19.

The final round of fixtures for the season, however, will remain on Sunday, May 23.

So to summarise this proposed scenario: Gameweeks 36 and 37 will each shuffle back a few days, with Gameweek 35 being the ‘double’ that will accommodate Chelsea v Arsenal and Manchester United v Leicester City – and, probably, the other two postponed games from earlier in the campaign: Southampton v Crystal Palace and Aston Villa v Everton.

Those eight teams will have a Double Gameweek if this does pan out.

We should reiterate that this is all just educated conjecture at this stage, with nothing official announced.

But we likely won’t have to wait long for the Premier League’s new schedule as the results of the weekend’s FA Cup semi-finals were the final piece of the jigsaw before the television companies can start portioning out the remaining games.

Onto Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final itself and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.1m) kept up his sensational form by grabbing the game’s winner.

The Nigerian finished at the second attempt after good work from strike partner Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), in doing so registering his 10th goal in his last seven matches.

As for Vardy, he has now gone 11 competitive games without finding the back of the net. That represents his longest goal drought since a run of 16 games in late-2016, with a spurned one-on-one opportunity in the first half against the Saints representative of his current wastefulness in front of goal.

The veteran forward was visibly shattered at the end of the game, although the Foxes do at least have four days before they take on West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

Second-half substitute James Maddison (£7.2m) was once again reduced to bit-part player status as Brendan Rodgers handles his comeback from injury carefully and he has now been omitted from the starting XI in the three matches since he was passed fit, although his no-show in Gameweek 31 was disciplinary-related.

There was encouragement for owners of the Foxes’ defensive assets, too, with Southampton not able to muster a single shot on target. Rodgers’ troops were at full strength at the back, with Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) returning from illness to bolster the backline.

As for the beleaguered Saints, there wasn’t much to champion ahead of their future Double Gameweek.

FPL midfielder Nathan Redmond (£6.4m) was again stationed ‘out of position’ up front but a lack of service and creativity saw him and Danny Ings (£8.4m) fail to register a single shot between them, with four of Southampton’s six efforts coming from outside the box.

Fraser Forster (£4.0m) at least retained his place between the posts and the fact that he has started seven of the last eight matches in all competitions bodes well for those Fantasy managers who are relying on the budget goalkeeper for appearance points this week and beyond.

So as pointed out by a few we didn't yet have a Hot Topic yet on the Super League. Remember, if you see something that's HT-worthy please flag it to the mod team! Ideally something that provokes conversation instead of simply a point of view, but opinions are also welcome.

So.. what are the pros? Cons? Is it all bad?

Is the CL and the current format fine, or is the Super League onto something? Or is the ESL totally the wrong direction?

If the ESL is all wrong, why?

For people who say it's just about money, do you think other current competitions aren't or are better and have better goals?

Is the biggest problem that there isn't promotion and relegation? If promotion/relegation was included, would you still have a problem with the Super League? What are the other big issues in your mind?

And for those who are hoping it happens, what's your reasoning? Do you have concerns, or is it exactly what you're hoping for? Are you excited by seeing PL teams playing the teams mentioned who could be included in the ESL?

It’s just a big no, as Seb pointed out, there is no way a rich boys club would develop a logo so bad and maintain they are serious, even with their money chasing tendencies.

The lack of promotion / relegation is the kicker for me. Once a team is out of the running for the win they have little incentive to play anymore.

I'd love to see a proper champions league, where the champions of each area play a league between themseleves. Those teams could maybe drop out of the local club contests to accomodate fixtures.

Maybe the teams not involved in this should break away and form their own leagues instead

Yeah I haven't gone through the details - I guess the incentive would be a big boost in money depending on where you finish? Similar to all the mid-table clubs in the PL?

Might as well add Tony Bloom at Brighton on at the end there at 1.3 billion.

Interesting point whether ownership of multiple sports franchises means that net worth of owner has to be apportioned. The American owners for example all have several franchises to their names and therefore arguably less to support their PL interests.

I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of the CL. But, at least it was formed over many years with the support of the whole football pyramid.

It is based on sporting merit (although the structure leaves a lot to be desired).

But this new Super League is the opposite of that. It's a power/money grab by the biggest clubs. It isn't supported by the fans in general and it's sporting merit is laughable with Arsenal and Spurs involved.

But I realised something last night... They don't need the support of fans in this country. It doesn't even matter if the games are played in empty stadiums (which it won't!).
The money from TV viewers (and advertisers) in Asia and America alone will make it lucrative enough. And, given time, the UK fans will reluctantly end up following it anyway.

They've already won. We just don't know it yet!

They will play games in New York, Mexico City, Bangkok, Jakarta, Beijing, Delhi etc. Will be massive financially for the clubs involved. Increase their fan base in the emerging markets (in football terms) and as you say, lots of UK fans will continue to follow the clubs.

Since the Glazers took over Man Utd, I haven't seen Man Utd's revenue decrease (in real terms). Noone talks about the 'green and gold' or FC United of Manchester now.

Couldn't agree more. With one caveat --> I'm not based in UK and still have no interest whatsoever in watching Super League. Same was with UEFA Nations League - creation that no one needs and treats seriously.
And if they are out of local leagues, there's even more incentive to boycott this "Super League".

Sounds like this will add 38 games into clubs’ schedules if there are 20 teams and they play each other twice

So 38 domestic league games, plus 38 super league games... 80 games before domestic cups add in another 10/15, then suoer cups, charity shields etc....

With no relegation at stake, teams playing 100 games a year - the standard of football will be absolute shite

Get ready for lots of sUpEr 0-0’s between Liverpool & Real Madrid or attacking superpowers like Chelsea & Atletico

Under the proposals, the ESL campaign would start in August each year, with midweek fixtures, and the clubs would be split into two groups of 10, playing each other home and away.

The top three in each group would qualify for the quarter-finals, with the teams in fourth and fifth playing a two-legged play-off for the two remaining spots.

From then on, it would have the same two-leg knockout format used in the Champions League before a single-leg final in May at a neutral venue.

So a max 26 games if a team in the play-offs reached the final

            Ah right... that’s still a lorra-lorra games

            38 domestic league
            20-26 super league
            5-10 domestic cups

The “big-6” are looking at 60 games minimum, and up to 80 if they want to win things

Cant see that helping the quality of football at all - just more rotation & more bloated squads

UEFA keep CL games and ask those same teams to play on every wednesday anyway lol
So United send the best XI to play on the Super and the u23s to play the CL

This will be defined by the amount of revenue from TV companies. They will need to risk it to choose between the United-Juve best teams on a new tournament or broadcast the u23s United vs Porto classic CL

The sooner the better for them. The new model is similar to the American franchise model I reckon. They'll be chomping at the bits to get teams from China, Dubai, New York, etc in. It would be in their financial interests to take it global and make it prime-time. So that would mean weekend games which Wenger was banging on about a few years back. It will be the only show in town if that happens and all the best players in the world will be playing in the same twenty or thirty teams in the one league. So by default this will crush the brand power of domestic leagues and international football I reckon.

I remember similar comments when the PL was formed and the old Division One became the second tier. At that time it was Arsenal, Man Utd, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton who were leading the charge. The big clubs short-changing the smaller clubs.

The comments weren't as ferocious because you didn't have social media, mobile phones etc. and it was not as global so you only saw comments in UK newspapers and TV programmes.

So if Arsenal, Spurs & Juventus for example continue their current trend of being utter shite and finish bottom of their super league....

And then one of the 5 “promoted” teams finish high up in a table... does the promoted team still get relegated? Or does it mean there aren’t 5 teams promoted the following season or what?

One of the things that bothers me most about this, is the assumption if you put the most expensive clubs/players in a leage together week in week out, year in year out, you are going to see the best football. You won't. The best games are where teams that are often wildly different, or have stakes that really hurt, play in contentious matches. These games are brilliant to watch and often eclipse the 'super sunday'.

      Money...

Eventually it'll kill off everything we love.

      Various points

      1. The driver behind this is more or less explicitly to maximise the number of games between clubs such as Liverpool and Real Madrid. There is an obvious financial draw to that and theoretically it should pay. It will also work to increase attraction in non European audiences.

      2. The notion that it will create a competition that is relevant is moot. To do that they need Karl Heinz Rummenigge on board. If Germany stays out the competition is meaningless. Fair to assume that PSG ownership will join in.

      3. Teams such as Arsenal Spurs and Milan are obvious makeweights and are unlikely to do any more in that competition than teams like Burnley do in the PL. Will they be bothered to put out full sides after December? I doubt it. You then need to wonder how other teams that may "qualify" will do.

      4. Is the entertainment factor going to increase? The cup semi final between Chelsea and City was chiefly one for the purists, No one-off that. Take any World Cup and quite often the least entertaining games are those that feature the "big teams".

      5. Initially Sky will dictate to the Premier League that the Super League teams must stay in the PL structure - making this league a slightly souped up version of the current CL. But that could well be simply for the duration of their rights. After that it is quite foreseeable that Liverpool City Chelsea and United could choose to break away from the PL entirely somewhere down the line.

European Football is being changed to the American Football System. It removes a 100 years of footballing history and culture to create a Corporate sporting event.

The Europeans founded Football and the American Corporates have taken away our game. Much of the wealth acquired from this league will end up in American Bank accounts which can only hurt Football in the UK.

Isn't the ESL just the first stage and it will eventually become a WSL
Why restrict matches to the legacy locations of the founding clubs, what's to stop a club franchise being purchased and relocated, even to a different continent
Why not have South American or Asian based super clubs
What about different rules - game played in quarters, larger goals ... it's just entertainment and not a competition
Why would these global franchises want to participate in their original national leagues

I am not suprised by the moves from Glazer family, Kroenke and Henry, who doesnt give a crap about football and see it as a side job next to their NFL clubs ownerships, but as a Chelsea fan, I am massively dissapointed by Abramovich, who is genuinely and passionately invested in club's every match, training sessions, tactics, etc. He should have known better. Reportedly Chelsea were the last one to sign in on the Super League and were very reluctant to do so, but its not an excuse. He lost a massive amount of respect I had for him as a club owner, and I hope its not to late for signing out

That is bad for UEFA and good for the clubs. CL will be worse if these clubs are not in it and it frees up the clubs schedule to play in the ESL.

The PL will be in an even worse position than UEFA if these clubs get kicked out of the PL.

Agree, Netters. Also if ESL goes ahead then this is a chance for fans of all clubs to show the likes of Levy, Henry, Agnelli and so on that they do have power. I sincerely hope fans out there boycott the new League. Don't buy the tickets, don't pay for the TV packages, don't buy the player shirts from the clubs involved. Buck the trend. Support a club lower down the league and put your money and energy into them.

To be honest, why is everyone putting the blame on the clubs? Is FIFA and UEFA that are banning them from participating from local leagues and CL. Clubs should have the rights to choose where and which league they want to participate in. Plus clubs have been hosting tournament for ages and no one complained..Emirates Cup/Audi Cup..etc.

    1. tbos83

Because it's and unsporting league that goes against the very basic principles of competition. They should realise that and have the courage not to have anything to do with it. I'm appalled that they think this is remotely defensible as a concept.

      1. MOZIL

But if you think about it, it's UEFA thats going against the very basic principles of competition. Kicking teams out of CL, threatening teams/players from playing in a new league. It's all at UEFA's interest. Also, look at what VAR and the system has done to football (match-fixing CL...etc).

Not sure I agree - at least UEFA is a broad church that represents clubs from across the continent. This 'super league' is a self-appointed group who are there for no other reason than money. This is not about competition it's about monopoly.

Can't all PL teams have a home fixture with fans before the end of the season by simply moving the GW37 fixtures to midweek ? That would leave the weekend of 15th of May free for the FA Cup Final, and the remaining two outstanding PL fixtures.

    1. Karan14

GW38 is already scheduled for the first weekend after May 17 when fans are allowed to return. So that would have too be moved as well to accommodate two sets of weekend fixtures with fans, which begs the questions. If GW38 is moved back a GW, why not why GW37 as well ?

Whether it goes ahead or not surely all comes down to the legals.

If clubs joining the ESL are kicked out of their domestic leagues and players can’t play for their countries 0% chance it goes ahead.

If they can remain in their domestic leagues, players can play for their countries and only difference is they play in the ESL instead if the Champions League then 100% it goes ahead. The money should still tow down the footbal pyramid in this scenario, although clearly gives the teams in ESL a huge financial edge.

They are going to have to work out some kind of relegation/ promotion though at some point as clubs inevitably get stronger/weaker

Another point about the ESL - clubs (or at least managers and players) are forever complaining about number of fixtures they play. This new 'league' seems to add at least 30 further games to the already packed schedule. It seems insane.

Halifax Town, Torquay United and Stockport County join European Super Non-League
SIX of England’s leading non-league football clubs have formed a new European Super Non-League to play the best fifth-tier teams on the continent.
Chesterfield, Maidenhead United and Boreham Wood have also agreed to join the breakaway clubs to play ties against the cream of Europe’s lower-level stragglers.
Halifax Town chairman Norman Steele said: “We’re talking about limited-glamour games against the likes of Sporting Pedara, CD Choco and Rapido de Bouzas. Who could resist?
“Imagine the buzz of visiting your local non-league ground and, instead of muching a pie through a dull mid-table clash against Dover Athletic, the pitch is lit up by the passionate journeymen of Real Alviles Industrial or F.C. Aprilia Racing Club.
“We’re confident that once they see how much loose change is on the table, we’ll soon be joined by Norway’s IL Stålkameratene, Romania’s Electrica Timișoara, and Strathspey Thistle.
“Our fans won’t think twice about taking 500-mile transcontinental journeys to Slovenian towns slightly crapper than their own to watch thrillingly workmanlike football. They deserve this.
“There won’t be any relegation, of course. Our six-figure incomes must be protected.”

I'm afraid the ESL or something like it was an inevitability and many football fans have made it so. The millions of fans that pay for TV sports packages, that buy replica shirts emblazoned with the logos of mega-corporations along with any amount of merchandise similarly branded, all in the name of "support", can hardly now complain that the biggest clubs are greedy.

If the ESL goes ahead, all those same people will be subscribers within six months.

I don't buy the "fans are at fault" arguement.

This is systemic, greed-driven from a few parties with the most power/money at their disposal. To blame fans is to remove the real problem. That it's not about football or fans here - at all - it's about money.
