Eliteserien 2021 xG and Other Stats R1-R3

At the time of writing, only 8 teams have played more than once and already we’ve a couple of upsets. Due to the fragmented nature of this gameweek and the fact the next runde doesn’t start until Monday, I thought I’d do some midweek stat diving and in particular everybody’s favourite: Expected goals and the like!

The Teams

1. FK Bodø/Glimt

2. SK Brann

3. Kristiansund BK

4. Molde FK

5. Rosenborg BK

6. Tromsø IL

7. Vålerenga IF

8. Viking FK

The Stats

Expected Goals

Vålerenga have the highest average total xG (2.26) as well as being the most likely to score from open play. Conversely, their xG from set plays is way down at 0.09 (not including the penalty miss – 0.79xG). Considering they’ve had 29 corners and at least 43 free kicks during this time, it doesn’t paint the best picture in regards to their ability to utilise set-pieces efficiently. That being said, to have an Open Play xG of almost 2 is impressive – Aron Dønnum (10.1mNOK) is still very much the man to have and surely, SURELY Viðar Örn Kjartansson (11.5mNOK) will start putting some chances away, right?

Molde look to be the most attacking team in the first 45 minutes (1.41xG) while Vålerenga find their rhythm later on, their xG for the 2nd Half is way ahead of everyone else at 1.57. Their delta (difference between 1st and 2nd half xG) is almost 1 (0.89) which shows us just how much they go up another gear later in games. Versus Brann (A) and Kristiansund (H), they were only able to manage 0.44 and 0.47 xG in the first half, but in the 2nd this increased to 1.21 and 2.42 respectively.

Kristiansund looked poor in the opener against Molde, a bit better in their 2nd match versus Glimt and somehow they were able to see off Vålerenga in their third, despite only having 26% possession and a total xG of 1.45. This was a classic case of the better team not taking their chances (as perfectly expressed through Dønnum squandering his chance from the spot) and the poorer team getting more than they deserved.

  • Most Impressive: Vålerenga – highest xG, look lively throughout the entire 90 minutes – expect goals
  • Least Impressive: Brann – just look at those stats – where are the goals coming from?
Chances/Big Chances

Reigning champions Bodø/Glimt have created on average 12.33 chances per game so far, slightly ahead of Vålerenga (12) and Rosenborg (11.33). Incredibly Molde have created the fewest chances – 8.33 – but 24% of those chances have been ‘big chances.’ Quality over quantity, plain and simple. Vålerenga are also creating 2 BCC per game while just 8.11% of Glimt’s chances have been BCs. For a team like Rosenborg to not even be averaging 1 BCC a game is worrying. They have the same average BCC/game as Tromsø, Kristiansund and Viking but their % BCC is lower than all of them. Should we be giving the biggest club in Norwegian footballing history a wide berth for now or will they buck the trend in their coming fixtures? After their home game with Brann on Thursday they face Molde at the Lerkendal but then have kinder fixtures in Sandefjord (A), Stabæk (H) and Strømsgodset (A) – so perhaps all is not lost quite yet.

  • Most Impressive: Vålerenga and Molde – both averaging 2 BCC/game and have high % BCC
  • Least Impressive: Brann – 0.33 BCC and 3.7% of their chances have been BCC – zero creativity
Shots

There’s not much daylight between any of the sides when it comes to shots but Vålerenga do lead the way with 15.67 – 2.67 more than the next best side which just happens to be…Brann! So this is interesting, right? Expected goals and chances/big chances are low yet shots are relatively high…

Again, sometimes less is more. Molde may have produced just 12 shots on average every game, but 58.46% of them – or 6.33 – have been on target. That’s better than any other team by almost 20%. They are not messing around. And neither are Vålerenga, with almost a third of their attempted shots on target. The utterly ridiculous statistic is that 83% of their shots (13/15.67) have been inside the area. 83%. If they can average anywhere near that number of attempts in dangerous areas, they are in for a good season.

I know, I know – it’s early days and we can’t invest too much in such a small, incomplete pool of data, but this does give us some idea as to how these teams have been approaching their games and how well they’ve been performing.

Context is of course helpful and welcomed wherever it can be applied and in the case of Tromsø, I feel it’s most certainly needed. They are the worst-performing team for shots across the board but have played Glimt, Molde and Viking. Incredibly they managed to score 4 goals in those three games even with such poor-looking stats – they overperformed. I actually think this is a very, very good sign. They scored 3 against Molde despite posting an xG figure of 0.89 and only recording 4 shots on target. If they’re able to eke chances out of almost thin air, that’s an encouraging sign for a newly promoted club – imagine what they can do when they start playing better.

Possession

Vålerenga (65), Glimt (57) and Molde (52) are the only teams to average more than 50% possession while Kristiansund (36.33) are the only side to average less than 40%. The difference column illustrates the average negative or positive difference/delta in possession. Vålerenga have looked so dominant and powerful in these opening games which is why the home loss to Kristiansund was even more of a shock. They outplayed them in every relevant metric but still couldn’t even salvage a point.

The idea that anybody can beat anybody is part of what makes the Eliteserien a thoroughly entertaining league to watch and statistically interesting to analyse. For example, Vålerenga attempted 614 passes and complete 510 (83%) vs. Kristiansund. Their opponents? 134 accurate passes from 216 attempted (62%). They had better xG stats, created more chances, took more shots/on target, more shots inside the area and had almost three times the amount of possession – yet still lost. There is no other way I can compute that result as anything other than an anomaly which offers mental application as the key factor in determining the result. Nine times out of ten Vålerenga win that. 99 times out of 100. Surely, right?

We saw Bodø/Glimt dominate last season through keeping the ball and out-passing their opponents – is 2021 Vålerenga’s year?

  • Most Impressive: Vålerenga – come on, it’s obvious
  • Least Impressive: Kristiansund – Average possession = 36.33%. That’s not very good. At all.

CONCLUSION

Vålerenga and Molde are ticking all the right boxes while Glimt are making sure they’re doing what they need to do to stay at the top of the table. (Well, level on points anyway). Rosenborg look to be struggling creatively while Brann are in big trouble.

Tromsø will be buoyed from turning up and grinding out a spirited display away to the champions, scoring 3 past (probably) the best team in the league (Molde) and beating the team that finished 6th last season. The main area of concern for the coaches will be to ensure the players are not shooting for the sake of shooting – they have not created many clear cut, decent chances as their goals scored would suggest and going forward this will surely see the goals dry up unless they adopt a different approach.

Kristiansund have looked poor. In all three games despite beating Vålerenga. They have been routinely beaten in every meaningful statistic and will continue to be easily beaten unless they can hold onto the ball a bit more. Vålerenga lost that game – Kristiansund didn’t win it. Don’t get me wrong, they secured the 3 points and fair play to them, but if anyone thinks they can play like that on a regular basis and get away with it – they’re going to be disappointed.

After just 3 games and with a small pool of data, we have in fact been able to identify areas of strength and concern in all teams, despite it not being as conclusive as it could be. Due to Vålerenga’s 2nd half xG being so much higher than their 1st half xG, does that not suggest attacking substitutions like Osame Sahraoui (8.0mNOK), Tobias Christensen (6.9mNOK) and Henrik Udahl (8.4mNOK) could become more viable Fantasy assets, even if they aren’t guaranteed starters?

I don’t think Glimt will retain the title and I don’t think they’ll score anywhere near 103 goals, but they seem consistent, reliable and professional in their approach – for me it seems almost a given that we should have at least 2 if not 3 of their players in our team at all times. They will get the job done and even though I think Molde will have too much for them, they will be at their heels for the entire campaign.

I would love to have a team full of Molde players, but the issue is… rotation. They are Norway’s answer to Manchester City. They have such depth for pretty much every position as we saw with Birk Risa (6.0mNOK) missing out vs. Brann. Ohikhuaeme Omoijuanfo (11.6mNOK) has gone from scoring 0pts in R1 to producing 11pts and 15pts in the following gameweeks. He does blow hot and cold and he’s not guaranteed to keep his place but right now he’s looking good for the money and with Molde being as clinical as they are, there’s a good chance this guy could be worth the risk.

  • Vålerenga and Molde = Exceptional
  • Bodø/Glimt = Very good
  • Kristiansund = Overperformed in last game – well beat in other two
  • Viking and Tromsø = Better than Rosenborg at the moment…
  • Rosenborg = Suffering from a creative block of some sorts
  • Brann = Might as well move to the OBOS now

Great stuff once again Reindeerhotdog - armband firmly on Donnum for Runde 4.

Any further updates on Botheim (sounds like he’s going to be ok) and Brynhildsen?

And any mini leagues you are in that are worth joining?

    Cheers!

Botheim should be fine but I dunno about Brynhildsen mate.

I am in a few - I'll have a closer look later, just off for the 2nd vaccine!

Thanks for the analysis here, was all set to keep Taylor at Brann for another week after he scored but your analysis here has made me question that.

Should I be moving him on for Fet or Aursnes or even Brynhildsen i've got 7.7m to spend ?

I didn't include the result away to RBK in this analysis as this was written Tuesday evening.

I'm yet to actually look into their performance and his in that game. I've not looked into player performances yet other than a couple I've been interested in as the games have come at us so thick and fast.

I've approached the first 3GW looking mainly at fixtures more than anything and just now I'm looking at form/team style.

Taylor is in the Finland squad for the Euros and there is a chance he will leave earlier than expected, maybe GW5 or 6?

I'm sure Ramboros will probably know - I've seen a few things mentioned on Twitter so I'll try to see what I can find.

Not too sure what's happening with Ola's injury. For me Fet is a great choice as he's cheap and been consistent. Doesn't seem to have a huge ceiling but if he's averaging anywhere around 5-6pts a game... For not even 8m that's value.

I'd hold off on any moves for the meantime at least but I'm pretty sure Taylor will be unavailable sooner than we'd like.

Bodo/Glimt doesn't seem like a nice fixture and Brann are leaking goals right now.

I was only ever thinking about bringing Taylor in from GW6 onwards but who knows what's going to happen.

My understanding is that Taylor has been selected for Finland's 30 man squad, but Brann isn't letting him go before the international break. GW6 lines up with the CL final, so Taylor should be fine until then. GW 7 starts right after the Euros.

Ah right cheers mate. Wasn't sure if he was popping out a week or two before.

Either way I think there's better options between now and then so I'll be leaving it till later in season

I'm pretty sure Brann will be fine, when their fixtures ease up. Taylor staying until GW6 for me. Loads of positives vs. Vålerenga and Rosenborg. Some terrible, defensive moments though.

Only game they've really looked like scoring was Vs RBK. Every other game they've been comprehensively well behind.

They have had shots but been so wasteful with them.

Not convinced they get relegated but if they carry on like this they're in for a poor season.

A lot can change and they could find some form but they have a weird mixture of really old and really young players and statistically have been way behind.

Can't see any reason to suggest staying with any of their assets for now - but then I again I am looking at objective stats and trying to put into context what has happened

Bottom line is - plenty of other options in my opinion.

Taylor looked good last game but he sometimes looks as though he's the only one trying!

Would not want to keep Brann players at all.
Their coaches are horrible and i would not be surprised at all if they are relegated this season.
Taylor will also leave for the EURO soon.

The entire Sandefjord squad came back negative so no reason it shouldn't go ahead mate.

Good stuff RHD. Sounds like some of your early picks and tips are paying off this season. Zach was clearly the best captain option last week. Unfortunately could not afford him without taking hits and losing players I didn't really want to.

Screwed by having Islamovic/Hussain from the start, meaning have been chasing my tail since. Had to pick Vecchia instead last week and, given it's Eurovision Song Contest tonight, he got pretty much nil pwang. Luckily had Taylor and was going to get rid but of course am delighted he got among the points and now not sure whether to keep.

How are people building for DGW7? Wild card or gradual use of FTs? Might be tricky as there a few players without the DGW I would want to keep and not have to spend transfers getting them back (Bell, Ebiye). Looking to get Sorli back in (what a useless move Sorli > Vecchia was), but you seem to favour Fet + cash instead?

I feel the best idea for GW7 is currently RU. If you aren't using RU, then it has to be because you intend to use spissrush.

I'd imagine the ideal team for GW7 is something like:

      Linde
Borch, Bjørkan, Ruud (Fit enough to play?)
      Saltnes, Dønnum, Eikrem, Zachariassen
      Ohi, Botheim, Bakenga

This team is about 15 million over budget, and I have a hard time justifying keeping anyone of them out of the team. We get the lineups from Molde and Odd. It's right after the international break, so Eikrem will get a nice rest ahead of the games. There are a few solid options that can lower the price of the team a fair bit. Koné (7.5 FWD), Jørgensen (4.5 MID), Dyrestam (5.0 DEF) perhaps being the 3 most interesting options for those that will use their WC early. With Sandefjord, Mjøndalen and Brann all facing DGW teams, there aren't many cheap SGW players with potential to beat out the DGW alternatives.

Currently I have 4 DGW players in my team (Borch, Bjørkan, Dønnum, Botheim). If I prepare for a spissrush, I'll have 3 SGW players, 8 DGW players and 3 DGW captains. That's 25 games. With RU I'll get 23-24 games. Keep in mind that I'll also get another 2-4 games at a later stages when I finally use spissrush, so I'll at the very least match the number of games by using RU over spissrush.

With full focus on GW7, my team would look like:

      Karlström
      Børkan, Borchgrevink, Reitan (Ottesen)
      Jørgensen, Fridjonsson, Dønnum, Fet (Bell)
      Botheim (C), Ohi (C), Bakenga (C)

Which would be accomplished by the following transfers:
      GW4: Taylor > Fet
      GW5/6: Berisha > Ohi
      GW7: Vecchia + Endresen > Jørgensen + Bakenga

I find that team to be awfully imbalanced, especially in midfield. I'd much rather keep my current front duo of Berisha and Botheim, and instead prioritise to get in proper fixes for Taylor, Fridjonsson, and likely Vecchia in GW4-8.

        100% this.

RU works beautifully for BG's first DGW.

That was my thinking from the start - with a WC to come maybe two weeks later.

There's some good fixtures that week and I think most players will be viewing it as the perfect opportunity to utilise RU.

I'll be interested to see what you decide to do.

I do have DGW players in my team as you mentioned but I think the potential in having Eikrem, Ohi, Zach, Saltnes, Donnum and all premium defence is stupidly high.

It does feel as though it's a bit FOMO'y though..

I’m thinking of an early wildcard, then playing the attack attack chip in GW7. Then using free transfers to set my team up for the doubles & blanks in 12, 13, 14 & 16 (form & injuries permitting of course).

Bit of a newbie question but as per FPL is there a chance of more DGWs later in the second half of the season?

            • 12 Years

Usually there's only DGWs due to some teams getting fixtures rearranged during the qualifiers for Europe. These fixtures have already been moved, causing the DGWs in GW7 and 9, so the current DGWs and BGWs are the only ones we would usually expect.

COVID-19 do however affect the league completely differently to PL. If one player in the squad test positive, the whole team will have to quarantine and 1-3 matches will likely get postponed. Last season we had DGWs and even a TGW due to two teams having a few players contracting the virus.

Very good points and appreciate your considered views. One of my blindspots is I don't think about chips (especially in EF), even though I had a bag of them with some haddock for a Friday evening treat.

I agree, RU looks like a smart move, especially as the teams with doubles in Rd 7 are the top teams with expensive assets.

Only caveat might be that with Covid and such a weird opening fixture list, there are going to be other DGWs to come, and maybe a triple? But this surely looks the best time to play RU. Planning begins now!

Thanks to Reindeer for A great article and to the rest of you for great thoughts and input!

Debating whether to keep Zachariassen or get back Sørli. Also have Botheim and 0.4 short of doing Taylor to Fet.

    Most likely saving transfer:

    Karlstrøm
    Bjørkan, Risa, Borchgrevink
    Aursnes, Taylor, Zachariassen, Dønnum (c)
    Ebiye, Berisha, Botheim

    Subs: Trige, Vevatne, Næss, Jonassen

Am mulling over Risa > Totland. Tromso have been a bit of a surprise package and 6.0m for a rotation risk defender is a bit rich. Will play RU to get 3x Molde in Rd 7 (Risa) won't be on of them) and take it from there.

Absolutely, with only 1 FT I would have hold, but Kjartansson and Botheim are good options with nice stats and fixtures.

Couldn't do the transfer i've got three Tromso players in the team. Both goal keepers and Ebiye. Will hold Risa this week if he doesnt play Vevate (from Viking) will come on from the bench. Risa will be moved on thou long term 6 million for a player whos not guarenteed to start is to much.

Made no transfers captain on Donnum.

Struggling with my FT this GW. Drop one of the Molde defs or do Berisha to Botheim?

    Karlstrøm
    Bjørbak - Bjørkan - Borchgrevink - Gregersen
    Zachariassen - Aursnes - Saltnes - Dønnum
    Berisha - Ebiye
    (Thomas - Jørgensen - O- Sivertsen - Jonassen)

The scout suggestions says he's "likely to be fit". It's not a confirmation for sure, but I am tempted. There's also the Molde defence double-up to worry about. Could of course bench one of them for Jørgensen.

Difficult one, but the double-up on Molde could pay of in the next games. Not many with a double-up there. Think Botheim is the best pick if he plays against Brann’s terrible defense

That's true, it's mainly this fixture that makes the double-up less appealing. Think I'm pulling the trigger on Berisha > Botheim. Most people in my mini league got Botheim over Berisha, so I won't lose points to them should he score big against Brann.

    Borchgrevink, Totland, Snorre Nilsen, Wichne
    Eikrem, Torsteinbo, Strand, Saltnes, Shala
    Kjartansson

Bit frustrated Wichne hasn't started this GW as Odd are there for the taking and he was one of the most creative defenders last season and probably their best player vs. Haugesund

Donnum is the one player I'd recommend every single week this season.

In the interest of keeping the picks a bit more illuminating, I'm trying to identify other good shouts people might have overlooked.

1FT: Hestad to Fet. Despite having concerns over the minutes of Reitan & Risa ahead of GW4, my priority this week had to be moving on Hestad. Although he has started each of the first 3 games, he has not shown nearly enough threat nor involvement to justify an 8.5m price tag (hence why he dropped to 8.4m, but let's ignore that). If you're in any doubt as to why I brought in Fet, then you haven't read enough ReindeerHotdog articles or comments! Given the evidence we have, my only other consideration this early was Kitolano (TIL), however owning Karlstrøm, Trige, & Hafstad meant that this wasn't even up for debate. I really like the look of S08 defence & SIF attack looking forward to DGW7, however neither of these take priority just yet. Plenty of options out there.

    GW4: Karlstrøm, (Trige);
    Borchgrevink, Reitan, Adekugbe, Bjørkan, Risa;
    Dønnum (V), Zachariassen, Fet, Sørli (K), (Hopmark);
    Berisha, (Hafstad, Sivertsen).

Halved the rank again in GW3, but only as far as 2.7k. Slow progression and, at long last, a correct captain pick are nothing to be upset about though. Sørli takes the armband back from Zachariassen for GW4, despite Dønnum being the most popular choice. The main reason behind this selection is that we have sufficiently more evidence re. Brann's defensive weakness than we do Mjøndalen's (given that they lined-up against whipping boys Sandefjord in their only game so far this season). There is, however, no doubt in my mind that Dønnum deserves the vice-captaincy.

      Good calls in my opinion.

Donnum captain for me based largely how poor Mjondalen were last season and how attacking Valerenga have been both last season and in these few games.

Even though KBK beat them, I do think that was anomalous and not too sure how many more time Valerenga play like that.

Glimt have been looking a bit overrun in these games but have won like champions do. Wouldn't be surprised to see a draw in that game if Brann can actually take their chances - Strand has been one of the best players in the league to this point and if he had better players around him he'd probably be leading the way for assists.

Kjartansson is the stand out captaincy choice for me this week and I'm dreading not owning him. He's had so many chances - he can't keep on missing them, surely.

Really liking the look of Snorre Nilsen and I'd love it if we could see something of a resurgence in Shala's career.

      Transfers for me:

      Hopmark to Fet
      Risa to Totland
      -4

Yes I know that's two hits in a row but again, forward planning combined with good fixtures for this week. More than likely I save my transfer for next week anyway!

      Lykke til!

Agree that VIF's loss to KBK was a one off, however do think Mjøndalen always have a decent defensive performance in them, especially at home. Only time will tell though.

Kjartansson looks primed to explode at any point. The final few weeks of last season presented him with some great chances, most of which he failed to take. It seems that's continued into this season - he could easily be league top scorer with Ohi. It's been so long now since I've seen Kjartansson looking at his best, in terms of confidence & finishing, that I'd not stick him any higher than 3rd re. captaincy this GW. The appeal is certainly there, though.

Nice moves from you also. I assume the defensive downgrade funded the move for Fet, so I can see why you'd take that hit. Both Risa & Reitan are on the chopping block for me, but even though Risa has two horrendous fixtures in a row, I can see an attacking return or CS. If I wasn't so adverse to hits, he'd be gone: I'm just not yet sold enough elsewhere to make the switch, especially with a DGW coming up.

My captain is Moses against Sandefjord. On 38 OR so going against Dønnum, Sørlie and Berisha could hurt me.

I really wouldn't be worrying about OR at the start of GW4. We have some DGWs coming up and Eliteserien is erratic at the best of times.

I don't think early on any differential captain calls are particularly needed but if you think it's the right call than always back yourself mate!

      Good luck bud.

Forgot about the early deadline. The perils of messing around with the captaincy. Always meant to captain Donnum but in experimenting I last left the armband on Fet! All I can say now is come on Bodo/Glimt
