Can Emiliano Buendia offer better value than Jack Grealish in FPL?

New Aston Villa signing Emiliano Buendia has been priced up at a tempting £6.5m by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of the game’s relaunch.

The summer recruit from newly promoted Norwich City will begin the new campaign some £1.5m cheaper than the Villans’ talisman, Jack Grealish (£8.0m), who has been handed a price hike.

Villa start 2021/22 with an appealing set of matches against Watford (a), Newcastle United (h) and Brentford (h) and sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture in Gameweeks 1-3 as a result – although things quickly turn sour after the September international break.

The question is: is Buendia worthy of a short-term gamble in that opening triple-header?

We’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below, with subscribers also able to access his player profile and much more in our Premium Members Area – and there’s a 20% off subscriptions right now.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

THE TRANSFER

Buendia’s move to the Midlands cost a club-record £33m in real-life terms, with the 24-year-old Argentinian signing a five-year deal.

His new manager, Dean Smith, said:

Emiliano has just completed an outstanding season in a championship-winning Norwich side with 31 combined goals and assists and was named player of the season across the league.

He is equally capable as a wide attacker or as a number 10 and is a great addition to our attacking options. We are delighted to have made such an exciting signing so early in the summer and look forward to Emi joining up with us for a full pre-season.

THE HISTORY

Buendia is, of course, someone we Fantasy managers have encountered before.

The Argentina under-20 international previous crossed our paths in 2019/20, with the yo-yo Canaries enjoying a brief stay in the Premier League before dropping back down to the second tier.

Buendia started his career with Getafe, debuting for the Spanish outfit’s B side at the age of 17 towards the back-end of 2014/15.

Moving back and forth from the reserves to the senior side, he made only 13 league starts for Getafe in his time in the south of Madrid.

His breakout loan spell with Segunda B club Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa came in 2017/18, with 18 attacking returns arriving in 40 second-tier appearances.

More of a supplier of goals than a prolific scorer of them, the assists continued to arrive upon his move to Norwich City in June 2018.

Buendia departed Carrow Road having created 36 league strikes, finding the back of the net on a further 23 occasions.

He also claimed the EFL Championship Player of the Season award in his farewell campaign, having passed the 30-mark for goals and assists combined.

Buendia was both the leading assist maker in the English second tier and the top chance creator, supplying a remarkable 36 more key passes than any other Championship player.

Only 29 of those 122 chances were created from set plays, too, so he wasn’t overly reliant on dead-ball duties – something we don’t know for certain will be handed to him at Villa Park.

Goal threat-wise, over half of his shots (60) and a third of his goals (five) did come from outside of the box.

Just three of his 111 efforts were from inside the six-yard box, so there’s a distinctly De Bruyne-esque feel to the numbers he has posted recently: a prolific creator of chances and an opportunistic shooter from distance.

This is extremely taboo here but I’m loving the look of this 5-4-1:

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Robertson Dias Shaw Coufal
    Salah Fernandes Havertz Raphinha (Gilmour)
    Watkins (4.5, 4.5)

Loving the idea of a TAA+Robertson double up with Van Dijk returning and Konate signed, expecting a Liverpool bounce back. Dias is Dias, consistent CS. Coufal a great pick at that price point. Havertz potentially OOP and in a fixture proof Chelsea squad, good form at the Euros too. Rest is template.

Not a huge fan of Havertz though. Maybe Jack Grealish?

I’m wary of the AVL attacking double up, lots of Watkins+Grealish and Watkins+Buendia around here. Just don’t think Watkins is clinical enough to warrant double investment in that attack. I think Buendia is solid value at 6.5 though

That's interesting. I think Watkins could be the best of the three, with the other two splitting points a little.
Watkins was really good last year - no reason to think he won't get better too.

      I don't think it's wild, but I wonder if there's a super-hot attacker how you'd get there.

      I guess you're thinking TAA & Robbo = 8.0 + 7.5 forward - which I can see the logic.

If Liverpool struggle though there's probably 2-3 moves to deal with it.

It looks fun all around. Could be genius.

You nailed it! Dropping either TAA or Robertson to a 4.0 opens up a new striker spot. Could easily downgrade Havertz to Buendia, Pepe, Jota, whoever shows up at that price point.

Definitely targeting that Norwich fixture GW1, I think there’s a thumping to be had there and price rises for TAA and Robertson soon to follow.

I can remember about 3-4 years ago you posted on here during the summer DZ that you were looking at starting with a five at the back squad. Did you go through with it and how did it go?

Rashford in for surgery - going to miss the first 2 months of the season.

Do we assume a front 4 of Pogba, Bruno, and 2 of Sancho, Cavani, Greenwood?
Maybe Pogba drops in behind Bruno and all 3 of them start?

Probably some good value to be found in there.

I’m all over Greenwood if he starts. If Rashford is confirmed out I would figure Greenwood would have priority over Martial.

      Cavani
      Sancho-Bruno-Greenwood
      Pogba-McTominay/Matic

Would be my guess given Ole’s tendencies

Absolutely would replace Havertz for me if it seems likely that he’ll start, insane value at 7.5. FPL Towers priced him with Sancho in mind.

    ok a thought here

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Lamptey, Ayling, 4.0
    Fernandes, Salah, Havertz, Raphinha, Pepe
    Watkins, Welbeck, 4.5
    0.5 itb

It's a 4-5-1, or a 3-5-2 if Welbeck starts hot, which I kind of think he will.
I'll see how preseason goes, but i like the idea of 5 strong in the midfield - hopefully Pepe and Havertz show enough to make me think they're nailed.

Looks solid. Pepe keeps finding his way into my drafts but the potential Arteta rotation drives me nuts, perhaps it’s less without European games. I like the Welbeck punt but we’ll have to see if Brighton sign a striker, they were in for Nico Gonzalez a month ago so they’re looking. Rest I’m a fan of, even if Havertz isn’t as nailed as we think, he’s gonna start all of the first six imo given the difficulty of the five fixtures after CPL GW1, and then we can monitor from there. Chelsea are clearly fixture proof under Tuchel.

How confident are u Harvertz will start most games?

He only start 7 games in last 20.

There are 14 teammates start more games.

Most nailed is Azpi ; 17 starts

If attacking players, the most nailed is Mount : 15 starts.

I know he score in final UCL and play well for Germany but we never know what Tuchel think and what he'll do at the future.

If Harvertz guaranteed 90 minutes most games, that will be good. OOP mid, play false 9.

Yeah I’m not convinced he will be nailed but I love the upside.

Good effort 1st timer. You should consider the amount of money you are leaving on the bench - it will not get you any points. I feel Chilwell 6.0 (139 pts @ 5.1 ppg) is a better option than Mount 7.5 (147 pts @ 4.1 ppg); Raphinha 6.5 (133 pts @ 4.4 ppg) is great value - so Raphinha instead of Mount and Chilwell instead of Rudiger. Also, if you use a 4.0 Keeper, say Steele, and 4.0 Defender, say B. Williams - you will have cash to splurge.

Has anyone else got that old FPL excitement back this summer?

I've found the past season & a bit a frutrating drag due to a variety of factors (Covid postponements/injuries, staggered kickoffs, no fans, poor use of VAR, personal health issues). However I'm really enjoying tinkering with my team atm, I feel like the pricing is potentially a lot kinder this season to prevent things getting too templatey too quickly (e.g I really like the potential of players like Doherty, Raph, Sarr, Buendia, Nacho, Greenwood, Havertz at their price points so far). Here's to a much more fun season - and year - for everyone.

Depends if you keep some money ITB to cater for that.

Besides which, he's a £6.5m striker so likely your 3rd striker. You don't need him to hit Harry Kane numbers, you just need him to tick along picking up the odd goal and assist.

I don't think he's going to be a major problem to shift, if needs be, but I get the feeling he will give those who take a chance on him good value for their money.

I'm firmly on board the Toney train

He's a one touch finisher, a big physical unit, good in the air and targeted at corners & set pieces

Can see him being more than capable of nicking 10 goals against the bottom half sides, and maybe suprising one or two complacent top half sides

The Premier league has been historically unkind to strikers who have torn up the Championship the season before.

It may do the same to Toney, but there does appear to be something different about him that suggests he's going to be OK at this level.

The appeal for me is that at that price point you have a guy who is absolutely nailed on, has pens and is absolutely vital to his team. You can play him every week knowing he's not going to be rotated, and if Brentford score he's virtually guaranteed to be involved in it somewhere.

Those factors make guys like him and Pukki worth giving a run in your team.

Exactly - the FFS article the other day about the promoted strikers who have failed and those who excelled was interesting

With Toney, you have to think he's more than capable of nicking 10 goals against bottom half teams, and then maybe surprise one or two complacent top half teams

His 50% goal involvement for Brentford is a big carrot, if we get Brentford scoring 35-40+ goals then Toney starts to get up towards 20 attacking returns

Very loose comparison based on psychical similarities and fact that both are new to PL.
By all means don't take me seriously.

I understand the Championship factor but we all now that for some players the jump between two leagues is just a bit too much.

Its a bit of an interesting one. I always doubt strikers coming up from the Championship but I have been burned in the past ( Bamford, Pukki) . He is already 35% owned.
If he grabs a goal against Arsenal he could easily be the most transferred in player ahead of game week 2. There are some decent options ahead of him at 7.5 IMO ( Antonio Nacho Watkins) but the 1m could help improve the rest of your squad. The opening fixture might be enough to put some people off who focus on banging in game week 1 but Palace, Villa Brighton , Wolves enough to temp me to get him in.

The comments above about being stuck with him if he's a dud are a bit daft. It's not like he's a 4.5 deadwood. You bench him for a week and get one of the many 7.5s, in a 2FT with a middling midfielder of off-colour premium defender.

    Wilson Antonio Toney

    (4.0 Ayling Brownhill 4.0)

    Patrick Bamford last season:

    Big chances: 3rd
    Chances from open play: 2nd
    Goals from open play: 2nd
    Shots in box: 2nd
    xG non penalty: 2nd

    Source: FFScout

I'm tempted but I just can digest having 4-5 players in the United vs Leeds game.

Likely to get an attacking return once in a while, maybe once in 7-8GWs. Could get frustrating.

Is Rodrigo going to be more of a threat to Bamford this season? Bambam was substituted almost every match the last few weeks of the campaign there and Rodrigo did well when he came on.

Wasn't Bamford carrying a minor injury towards the end of last season? Pretty sure that's why he was getting subbed off early.

I suspect Rodrigo will continue to provide backup and doubt he'll start many games.

I'd want to see Sancho in action for United before committing. With Rashford out, I'd have thought Cavani would get more minutes. He can do in an hour what others need 90 minutes to do.
I might have him GW1 and if he gets less time than I'd like, I can change him for any other striker I'd want.

Me to. Manchester United have a history of paying over the top for players who then either flop (Di Maria, Depay, Sanchez etc) or can't nail down a place in the team (Van De Beek, Mata, Fred (initially) etc).

    Sanchez
    Shaw / Digne / Reguilon
    Salah / KDB / Pepe / Harrison
