What does Brighton’s signing of a new goalkeeper mean for Robert Sanchez?

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) is the second most-popular goalkeeper in Fantasy Premier League, sitting in over 27% of FPL squads at present.

The Spaniard is owned by more Fantasy managers than the rest of the other £4.5m shot-stoppers combined, so Friday’s news that the Seagulls had sealed the signing of 21-year-old Dutch custodian Kjell Scherpen from Ajax may have been disconcerting to some.

The transfer has actually been on the cards for some time, with media reports in May suggesting talks had already begun.

Scherpen, a Netherlands under-21 international, had made only two league appearances for Ajax in his two years in Amsterdam but had previous senior experience with former club Emmen.

Albion boss Graham Potter said of his new capture:

We’re delighted to welcome Kjell to the club. He’s a player we have been monitoring for a while and we see him as a player with a lot of the right attributes.

As well as his size he is someone we think will work very hard to improve all aspects of his game as he gets used to English football. We look forward to working with him.

What does the new signing mean for Robert Sanchez?

Salah and blanks again as Brighton defensive assets shine ahead of good run 3

The departure of Mat Ryan (£4.5m) and expected exit of Christian Walton did make it seem likely that Potter would swoop for another goalkeeper in the summer, with Jason Steele (£4.0m) not a serious candidate for promotion to the Albion starting XI.

Thankfully for prospective Sanchez owners, Scherpen may also be a little way from the first team – for now, at least.

The Athletic’s Andy Naylor previously reported that:

Scherpen… will be a back-up goalkeeper for Brighton, as a number 2/3, in-between first choice Robert Sanchez and Jason Steele.

The Athletic understands he is likely to be loaned out to aid his development, a tactic Brighton have used with Sanchez and Christian Walton, who is leaving after eight years at the club.

Maty Ryan, replaced in December in Graham Potter’s side by Sanchez, is also departing after a loan spell at Arsenal as part of the overhaul of the goalkeeping group.

Brighton have forthcoming pre-season friendlies against Rangers on July 24 and Getafe on August 7, with the latter warm-up game in particular likely to tell us more about how Potter is planning to set his troops up in Gameweek 1.

Really want Pepe in FPL but he's just not convincing. Always in and out of the game, he'll get some explosive scored thought the season, but will also frustrate and be rotated a lot.

Buendia, will he be taken off early given the midfield players Dean Smith has at his disposal ?

I think it is best not to take risks early on unless one plans to WC very early. We need to know Buedia's place in the team first.

If you wait for everyone to prove themselves before going for them you’ll never stick out from the pack. He has all the hallmarks of a bargain and previous good returns when playing for Norwich in the prem. he’s a low risk, potential high reward in my opinion.

Depends what Auba we get. Last season Auba wasn't even close to being worth 10m, but we all know he can be so much better.

Not in any rush to jump back into that trap, just wait and see.

I'd check his early season form first. Personally I'd spread the £10m over two forwards like Antonio/Iheanacho/Wilson etc. Unless he starts bagging 1-2 goals or assists first 4 gameweeks

With White going to Arsenal, is Duffy at 4.0 an option now?

    1. One Man
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Yes. Duffy is a good player. What holds him back at Brighton is he’s not a player to play the ball out. Potter seems to prefer CB’s that build from the back.

Guessing they'll sign some sort of replacement but regardless I imagine the likes of Veltman would be ahead of him in a back 5. Duffy was not suited to Potter's tactics and he really struggled at Celtic as well.

Your best hope is probably that they play a back 4 and Duffy becomes first choice backup?

    3. Andy_Social

They still have 4 very decent CBs - Webster, Burn, Dunk and Veltman.

You'd think Brighton would be looking for a 50m striker.

Quick question on the Members' area. If I have set up some tables, and my membership expires without any renewal after that point in time, do I get the tables back (to how it was actually set up before the expiration) when I renew my membership at some point in the future?

Good question. I'd be pretty confident that you would (back before we had rolling subs there would always be a few weeks where nobody had membership but your tables were always there when you signed back up) and I'm not aware of anything being deleted / wiped when your sub expires, it just changes your access privileges.

      Can't be certain though.

Yup, I think the tables should remain. I would be pretty disappointed if they disappear like a whole new membership account.

Given you'll likely want your captain playing at home, who has the best run?

Salah - BUR, CHE, CRY, MCY BRI

Bruno - LEE, NEW, AVL, EVE LIV

KDB - NOR, ARS, SOT, BUR, CRY

Only ask because it seems to be Salah and one other in most teams, but if you look at this, the other two have a better set of fixtures.

Interesting - I've got Trent. Right now I'm opting for Grealish and Toney, but I've also got Watkins up front. But I'm debating the double AVL attack with no Ham as both fixture sets look good. The forward line is a work in progress

Thought it would be fun to start a thread on trying to predict the bargain and surprises of this season:

    The new Martinez?

Sanchez, Bachmann the two that spring to mind.

    The new Dallas?

Hoping this could be Lamptey if he stays fit.

    The new Son?

A midfielder around 9m who can hit Son’s 200+ season from last, can’t see anyone who stands out here….

We have been spoilt for choice with the mid priced forwards.
    £7.5m - Iheanacho + Watkins
    £8.0m - Bamford + DCL

    All great options.

My bad, totally misread your post, was thinking if Kane stayed at Spurs!

No, he'll break records if he goes to City, lol. But now that he's got assists in his game then he's difficult to leave out, no matter where he is

Not a fan of triple premium. I'd probably sacrifice Bruno for Sancho or Pogba or Cavani.

No wonder I'm having a struggle leaving out players who did me so well last season.
Just loaded new squad into Fantasy Football Fix and the old one had a value of £114.2 million as we finished!!
That's a lot of cash to have to find lol

Hello all, doing a bit of recruitment for my Fantrax draft league. We are in our 8th season running so far. Started off as a close knit of lads from here who got tired of FPL and wanted to play draft and now (slowly) grown into two divisions of 13 teams each. We had a slew of retirements after last season and now have 6 open spots in division 2.

A little bit more info - scoring has a FPL base, but added tweaks of our own over the years. Claims are done through a bidding system so every manager has a fair shot for claiming players. $10 buy-in for division 2. We run group chats on WhatsApp, so that would be required. Draft is at the end of July (slow draft). I'm happy to answer anymore questions!!

Email is on my profile for everyone interested!

    I couldn't resist Salah:

    Martinez (Foster)
Chilwell, Digne, Wan-Bissaka, Fofana (Neco Williams)
    Salah, Fernandes, Mount, Hojbjerg (Gilmour)
    Kane, Toney (Davis)

If Kane goes to City this is definitely going to be my lineup:

    Sanchez (Foster)
    Lamptey Ayling Fofana White (4.0)
Salah Fernandes De Bruyne Harrison Smith-Rowe
    Kane (4.5 4.5)

Could see KDB and Kane break all kinds of records

That defence just doesn't look good enough. Do you really need Kane, KDB, Salah and Bruno when you can only captain one of them each week? In this scenario I'd downgrade Bruno and strengthen your defence.

You've also got 0 playing subs which is a hard no for me.

De Bruyne to Son and a 4.5 str to a 6.5 and you could be onto something

That’s an interesting move, I’d lean upgrading the defense though and upgrading two 4.5s to 5.5s

        1. Big boy Bowen
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

The 4.5 defs play though, the 4.5 str don’t.

Plus upgrading that 2nd striker allows so much more flexibility down the line.

For example, last season I started with Kane and 2 x 4.5s and instantly regretted when DCL started firing, it was much trickier to jump on the wagons

The thing is someone will emerge from that price bracket, or at least close to. There always is. And you’ll be prepared to hop on easily

That’s fair, either way this team isn’t gonna be my draft unless Kane moves. You think he goes this summer?

TAA will horribly eat into any gains you make from KDB

      KDB > Bamford/Nacho/Toney, 4.0 def > TAA, 4.5 def becomes first sub

You’ll have 0, 0.5 or 1.5 ITB depending on which striker accompanies Kane & that gets used to upgrade a 4.5 defender

That’ll be the popular 4-4-2 if Kane signs

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Not having TAA is a tough one tbh, also wish I could squeeze the 0.5 for Raphinha.

Probably have to drop Fernandes for another MUN mid

KDB’s a no brainer sacrificial lamb for me - 1 goal from play in the first half of the season, 8 appearances in the second half (5 blanks), living an injury nightmare for 2 of the last 3 seasons, allegedly played against Italy with compromised ankle ligaments, all the messing around he does with penalties (either missing hem or giving them away)….

And let’s be honest - at 12m, you’d have been disappointed with 5 of his last 6 seasons from an FPL perspective

Unbelievable player on his day, but by god he was a nightmare last season, not worth the hassle from GW1 imo, especially in a team with Bruno, Salah, Kane
