FPL team guide 2021/22 – Leicester City: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Leicester City.

After narrowly missing out on Champions League football in the 2019/20 campaign, the Foxes finished fifth again last season – one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

That means more Europa League involvement to contend with, a competition in which Leicester reached the round-of-32 stage in 2020/21.

Don’t forget that you can view in-depth team and player data on Brendan Rodgers’ side in our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

FORWARD SITUATION

Leicester have already made a key squad addition in the form of striker Patson Daka (£7.5m).

The Zambian’s style of play makes it seem as though he is a long-term replacement for one Jamie Vardy (£10.5m).

“What (Daka) is doing, everyone is seeing he’s scoring for fun. His biggest strength is his pace. He uses it very well. We are seeing him develop into a good striker, with the strength, pace, and a great conversion rate.” – Zambia international Larry Bwalya

However, few will be expecting the 34-year-old Vardy to suddenly fade out of the Leicester picture despite his age.

That means a likely scenario of Vardy, Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) battling it out for two striker spots – if Rodgers retains a wing-back system.

Iheanacho produced wonders in the second half of last season, scoring 12 goals and logging two assists from the beginning of February.

Above: FPL assets sorted by goals scored per 90 minutes in 2020/21

The Nigeria striker was actually the top FPL forward for rate of goalscoring, averaging 0.70 goals for every 90 minutes played.

Vardy, meanwhile, registered more big chances than any other Fantasy asset last season (34). Ten of those opportunities arrived from Gameweek 26 onwards, which was the point at which Iheanacho started his run in the side – so any suggestions that the long-serving forward’s goal threat was completely diminished are a little wide of the mark.

Nevertheless, there was a modest drop-off in the veteran striker’s goal threat numbers – and a rise in creativity – after he progressed from lone spearhead to one half of a front two.

This FPL caper is tough, eh? I can get Shaw, Salah, Rapha, Harrison, DCL, Laca, and Kane in but no Bruno or KdB... Last year with the delayed start for many was so much easier.

To Iheanacho or not to Iheanacho, that is the question.

I've decided against it, might come back to bite me. Got the extra cash for Cavani so got him instead.
Barnes I think is a good option to take advantage of Leicester's mixed early run of games.

I had him throughout late last season, would really like to include him, but probably only in a three man attack, rather than the 2 fwd + 4.5M I currently have.

Digne undisputed with no competition for set pieces would be one of those “don’t overthink things” type situations

Who cares how good or bad Everton start, if he’s taking corners and DFKs as well as his creativity from play he’d be a very foolhardy guy to avoid

Given how little James played last season not sure that much has changed has it?

Characteristically I mistimed him completely twice last time (he's my Jonah) but he is an awful asset quite frequently. Everton being the cs kings in the last 15 weeks (8 from 15) massages his numbers.

Hold him all season? Possible. But it will be far from optimal of course. One of those players where season value simply misleads.

I actually managed to time him relatively well last season - got him in for the DGW where he returned well, and he was very consistent on the run in - lots of 6’s with the odd 9, then got rid before City GW38

But not sure he actually had many (/any?) games without one of JRod or Siggy on the pitch monopolising all the set pieces though…

If he’s hitting those set pieces I think he goes up a notch as an asset, up into 10-15 attacking returns territory (basically can return in every fixture all of a sudden, and ceiling height gets jacked up considerably where he can land the hallowed monster attacking returns + cleansheet hauls)

All ifs though, so many ifs

It’s all ifs with pretty much everything at this stage 4 weeks out unfortunately

One of my very few fixed points is no Digne

This means of course I'll WC into him around week 4 to hit the YC and negative form turn for Everton.

There is a lot to be said for him but Everton just feel like a form side to me. You just know (or I do) they'll end around 10th on every known metric by season end but that will include top 6 and bottom 6 form - quite possibly simultaneously!

                  I hear ya

There are certain players like that you need to just make your mind up and stick to either avoiding them or trusting them

Having said that I can’t think of many players I categorically wouldn’t pick when the time is right for them - but there are plenty I wouldn’t pick for GW1

No Siggy, no James, would give Bernard and Davies a reprieve in the Everton squad, unless they get replacements:

      Pickford
      Coleman Godfrey Keane Digne
      Allan Doucoure
      Bernard Iwobi Richarlison
      DCL

      Begovic*
      Kenny Holgate Mina Nkounkou

Hasenhuttl's comments on Obafemi, Nlundulu and Tella (19 July 2021)

"It was the first season where Dan [Nlundulu] was without injury but he didn't get the game time he needs at his age." on why Nlundulu has been loaned out to Lincoln City.

"With Michael [Obafemi] and Nathan Tella it was the same where I thought they need to have game time.
"But I see them next season a little more in the running, and they will have more chances to play than Dan. So that's why we decided to let [Nlundulu] go and give him a chance to play."

Sounds like Obafemi's fitness issues are behind him, and he is ready to contribute more to the side.

Local journalist (generous job title) Alex Crook also mentioned that Ralph Hasenhitt; has been impressed by how fit Obafemi has been upon returning for pre-season.

For 4.5m it's not that bad a deal to have Obafemi. We know he can score a few goals with his few appearance in 19/20 (3 G 2 A in 21 league games, 8 starts). I suspect he'll play a bigger part this season.

Are you getting him in YOUR GW1 squad?

Obafemi is my £4.5M bench forward, can't believe this may end up a sensible choice.

I think we'll have to see preseason, but a string of cameos is actually decent for the guy likely to occupy the third spot of our benches. He's been known to be used as a super sub as well, and scoring in his limited time on the pitch.

If Obafemi looks set to get the odd start and come on subs most games then he is the perfect 3rd choice forward for £4.5m.
Also, if Origi gets a move to a club were he will get a fair amount of game time then he is also an excellent superbudget forward option at £5.0m.
I would consider playing just one £7.5+ forward in that scenario.

Thought Swansea are looking to loan him? If Saints get Armstrong he will be further down the pecking order. If he stays he's the best of the limited 4.5 fwds but thats not saying much!

According to Tom Leach (Hampshite Live) and Rich Sharpe (Lancashire Telegraph), a swap deal of Obafemi/Armstrong looks 'unlikely' for now.
As for Swansea, the interest was reported mid June but has since been stone cold.

        1. Gabbiadini
          • 6 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

As a Southampton supporter, I wouldn't be entirely convinced.
The season he got these appearances, Che Adams was integrating into the squad for a displaced Shane Long and hence Obafemi emerged as a youthful 3rd/4th choice.
Last season, attitudinal problems and a fitness level below that desired by Hasenhüttl saw him fall away. An injury during this period also saw a loan move to Swansea break down. To his credit, he was able to get back strong from rehab and earn the trust to feature heavily in first-team training.
However, despite these reports, it is important to note that Adam Armstrong (a striker) is high on the radar of the club, with a first bid reportedly rejected.
Nathan Tella is seen as the "biggest talent" within the club and Theo Walcott has signed permanently, both of whom featured in the striker position on occasions last term.
Elyounoussi has also returned from Celtic and looks set to stay as a further option in the attacking four.
To summarise my points, the attacking options have strengthened and grown in quantity greater than that of Obafemi's ability since his previous spell in the side.
Ings, Adams, S Armstrong, A Armstrong (a signing), Redmond, Walcott, Djenepo, Elyounoussi, Tella & Obafemi.
The potential of 10 options for the 4 attacking positions will be the strongest yet under Hasenhüttl.

Great stuff, and I fully agree with the conclusions there. The attacking options next season with Tella getting more game time, Moi getting a second chance etc. it's not quite rosy at the moment for Obafemi. Although for the options fro the 2 up top, it will be

Ings (might still move), Adams, A.Armstrong, Obafemi as the 'true strikers', with Walcott and Tella also options but they both can also play in the AM role in the 4-2-2-2.

              2 years, 9 months ago

              Yes.
Considering what we are as a club and our ethoses an opportunity will come. It will be about taking it with both hands and making it his own, whatever capacity the role is.
As it stands, I wouldn't have him very high in the order but things can change quickly with strong performances.

Good post from Gabbiadini there. I have 5m to spare for a 4th midf spot in a mostly 433 formation. I had Tella earmarked, but it looks like it's a punt too far. Might be better taking Brownhill with Gilmour and trousering 0.5.

Hasenhüttl prefers to sign players with strong versatility so I envisage the attacker signing that is wanted will be able to play both the 10 and the 9. Although as the days count on, they may need time to integrate into the squad hence why I wouldn't be surprised if Tella starts the season in the LAM role.

Cliche argument this, but if/when he bangs form or not, its a lot easier to work our way out of Bruno once the season starts instead of working our way to Bruno. Just a practicality thing. If you spread the funds and Bruno is Bruno, its very hard to get him in.

I like Cavani, Greenwood and Mahrez as explosive differentials but all three in the same team with a weak bench might be asking for trouble. If you're confident in it then go for it. I'd consider a guaranteed starter instead of Greenwood.

Usually the template is one midfield premium and one forward prmeium.
Unfortunately, Kane is still at Spurs (different story once he leaves), Vardy doesnt look worth the extra $$$ over Iheanacho, and Werner probably will play on the left with Havertz as the false 9. So premiums are a bit of a no-go up top.

Manchester United want to assess Luke Shaw's fitness for the start of the season after he played at the Euros with broken ribs. He suffered the injury against Germany but played through the pain barrier to help England reach the final #mufc #mujournal

Not necessarily, United is spending big this transfer window they will certainly try to go for the title and to do it you need to start strong with your best players.

Still long time to first game and I'm pretty sure that they will do all they can to have Shaw fit enough to feature in it.

Stay strong with your best players then have them injured for the rest of the season? The season is 38 weeks, United need to be smart if they want to win it. If Shaw has broken ribs then he’ll sit out until they heal, they won’t risk him like that.

Injured against Germany and then played in 3 games after including start against weak Ukraine and 2 x 120 minutes in semis and final.

Did he looked like someone playing through pain barrier ? Why was he "risked" against Ukraine ?

Obviously injury not too serious hence every chance he will start season for United.

He was risked for the same reason Rashford wanted to play instead of get his surgery done. First chance in 55 years for England to win a title, but still bottled it anyway

So you're suggesting England is incapable of beating Ukraine with Chilwell playing in place of Shaw ?

If the injury was serious at all he wouldn't play next game after Germany and then 2 consecutive 120 minutes matches.

I'm not too bothered. Will likely make the boring straight swap to AWB if Shaw isn't ready. Cresswell is also a good option at the same price or could save 0.5 by going down to Coufal, Tierney or Reguilon.

How Leicester line up in the Community Shield will be very interesting.

I think Tuchel has brought a new tactical innovation to the league, and I think Leicester are well placed to adapt to it.

Whilst Conte revolutionised the attacking shape of Premier League sides, I think Tuchel will change the defensive shape of teams.

Tuchel's front 3 defend unusually deep and narrow, making his team difficult to penetrate. But despite this, they are still potent on the counter attack; with the narrow front 3 getting forward quickly and overloading the two centre backs. The wingbacks then hold the width, freeing the 3 forwards to roam and express themselves.

Usually there are sizeable offensive drawbacks to being so compact defensively, but they seem to be disproportionately minimal in this system.

I can see Leicester using a similar 343 defensive shape, with any 3 of Vardy, Iheanacho, Barnes, Maddison, Daka occupying the 3 deep narrow forward positions, and springing quickly against opponents. I think it would suit them.

Either way I'll find it interesting to see how they set up against City!

    Bruno stats

    When Pogba didn't start:

    24 games: 16 goals, 9 assists (7 pens)

    When Pogba started:

    28 starts: 9 goals, 10 assists (6 pens)

So only 3 open play goals with Pogba on the pitch, compared to 9 with Pogba off the pitch AND in fewer games

Hard to know, the way I used to look at it was back when Bruno first joined for GW25’19

Pogba was injured and Bruno got 3 goals & 2 assists in his first 5 games

Then Pogba returned to the team as a sub in GW29, and started the following 8 games alongside Bruno…

Fernandes went up a gear with 6 goals + 4 assists in those 9 games (with Pogba present)

For me what’s really skewing those stats are three games where Pogba was benched last season - Everton GW8, Leeds GW14 & Southampton GW22

Utd scored 15 goals (!) in the later two matches where Pogba was benched… and Bruno made hay by treble returning in both games (2G 1A for 18 points vs Leeds, and 1G 2A for 17 points vs Southampton)

And then the other big one was Everton GW8 where Pogba was again benched, and Bruno again went mental getting 2G 1A for another 18 point haul

But Bruno has returned, and double returned, what seems like many times with Pogba there so not sure what to read into it tbh

Seeing quite a bit of Robbo but essentially no VVD

Assuming fitness then isn't VVD an equal or perhaps better bet. Pattern of returns is different but he effectively matched Robbo point for point in his last two complete seasons. 0.5 goes quite a long way in week 1.

If VVD isn't fit - no real point to getting Robbo? Just get VVD and save 0.5?

    1. GreennRed

No question he's the best asset - was thinking more who should go alongside him if you go that way.

A second issue - one that is still open in my mind - is whether VVD may not be the better to start with on week 1 budget looking at spread of funds and likely returns. I'm less of a fan of Liverpool defence than most and see likelihood of only 1 cs by week 4. It could be more but not 100% sure I want to pay 7.5 for them. Very simple to add a second Liverpool defender later from an attacking budget player,

    3. Pukki Blinders

I concluded long ago that VVD is only worth it over Robbo if you hold him long term. Most probably won’t though.

        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

        Yep

Fair point. Issue then perhaps is whether that in turn affects Robbo and TAA. Overall I'm much cagier about Liverpool defence than almost all on here I suspect.

    5. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

As good as VVD is from corners, I'd rather rely on steady assists from Robbo than set piece goals personally. It's more consistent.

Robertson is pretty much a winger in a front 5 when Liverpool attack.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

I've swung both ways on this one using the same logic.

Edging now to VVD if I go there as any Liverpool defence for me would be intended as a long term hold and VVD - historically anyway - is just better long term.

If you're getting Jota - how long do you plan to keep him for?

I like him long term but not short term enough to get him in

Going to keep him until Firmino is the regular Starter , see then who is on Form.

What are we thinking about Gundo?

Huge potential. Will be watching City's pre-season and the Community Shield closely to see whether he's still getting into dangerous positions like he was during that amazing winning run.

I think he benefits from Zinchenko playing as an inverted fullback tucking in behind him, and with Foden holding the width. It opens up space for him to attack. Those three work well together.

I just wonder whether Pep will try to include Sterling after his Euros performances. If Sterling plays LW cutting inside, Gundo's space is gone.

I think the +£2.0m price increase is too much. He benefited massively from KdB's injury as he largely filled the void. He won't have that freedom to roam forward with KdB back. It's a no from me.

You can have two attacking 8s, provided the fullbacks stay back and narrow like Zinchenko and Walker do. KDB didn't stop David Silva getting forward.

It's like the opposite to Liverpool. Neither of their 8s get forward, because both the fullbacks go forward.

A balanced team can have an unbalanced central midfield.

In that price bracket there are so many nailed on juicy options... its a no from me.

Will probably get a couple of 15 pointers, but good luck trying to guess whether they come vs a champs lge side, midtable or relegation fodder

Injuries forcing Pep's hand could change things though

If he can still penetrate into dangerous area WITH significant amounts, maybe can be an option (but with a good sub, backup)

Are you rotating Cresswell, ESR & Toney?

If I have that luxury yes I'll play the ones with the best fixture/form but I tend to get a lot of injuries plus COVID is spreading like wild fire.
