How Gray and Townsend fared on Everton debuts – and why DCL could benefit

We’ve two more warm-up matches to bring you up to speed with as we continue to assess the form and fitness Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players in pre-season.

Everton were in the US for a clash with Colombian side Millonarios which finished in the early hours of Monday morning, while Wolverhampton Wanderers ramped up their preparations for 2021/22 with a friendly against Las Palmas later in the day.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Millonarios 1-1 Everton

  • Goals: Demarai Gray (£5.5m) pen
  • Assists: Nathan Broadhead

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Fantasy managers got their first glimpses of Demarai Gray (£5.5m) and Andros Townsend (£5.5m) in Everton shirts as the Toffees sealed a penalty shoot-out win over Millonarios in the Florida Cup.

It’s probably fair to say that neither signing particularly excited Everton fans or FPL bosses, especially when we think back to the calibre of player that Carlo Ancelotti was recruiting 12 months ago.

But Rafael Benitez’s ability to get the best out of a mediocre team was a feature of his reign at Newcastle United.

Townsend indeed briefly played and excelled under the Spaniard at Newcastle in 2015/16, registering three goals and two assists in 10 appearances.

He was also third among midfielders for crosses during that spell on Tyneside and his ability to whip a ball in seems to have been the main reason for his capture.

True to form, Townsend was the fourth-best midfielder for successful crosses per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.

The ex-Palace winger caught the eye in Florida in his first Everton appearance, playing on the right of a 4-2-3-1 and producing a number of telling deliveries – and his distribution could very well benefit Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), as Townsend alluded to in his post-match interview:

I need to keep improving. I know the manager well and I’m sure he’ll go through the tape of the game with me and show me my good parts and – more importantly – my bad parts, so I can improve and help this club in any way possible. When I speak to him, he’ll be telling me what I could have done better and the positions he wants me to pick up.

He wants to keep improving players and that’s why I had such a great spell with him at Newcastle. Hopefully, I can have similar success here.

I’ve had to work over the years to improve my weaker side. It’s got to the point now where I actually prefer crossing with my right.

I was brought to this club to put crosses in the box. We’ve got a big number nine in Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] – or it could be Moise [Kean] or whoever is playing in that position – and my job is to put the ball in the box.  I did that on a couple of occasions against Millonarios and hopefully, the more the communication grows with my teammates, they’ll know where I’m going to cross the ball, and we can get some joy from it this season.

Townsend also struck the woodwork with a curling effort and Benitez said of his new signing on Monday:

He’s someone who I know from my time at Newcastle. He’s a player with quality. I was checking his fitness stats, too, and he was one of the best players in the Premier League in terms of work-rate. We have a player who can give us something more because he has the desire and he’s in a position that the team needed. I think he can do well for us.

Gray, meanwhile, was brought on to replace James Rodriguez (£7.0m) in the number 10 role at half-time.

The ex-Leicester City man is perhaps more known as a wide player but the unknown availability of Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m) and reports that Rodriguez might be sold at the right price could open up a spot in ‘the hole’ of Benitez’s seemingly favoured 4-2-3-1.

A promising debut from the pacy midfielder was capped with a goal from the spot after fellow substitute Nathan Broadhead was felled.

Gray said of his Everton bow and spot-kick:

I fancied it [the penalty in regulation time], I thought it would be a good way to get off the mark in my first game.

I am feeling confident… and as I pick up fitness, hopefully, I can take that into the new season. I felt good, I felt sharp, I was happy to score the penalty and for the team to win the shootout. It is positive.

I have settled well and felt I trained well in my first few days. I took that into the game today, I was positive on the ball and made sure my touches were good.

Asmir Begovic (£4.0m) completed a hat-trick of debutants who impressed with his shootout heroics, while Lucas Digne (£5.5m) made a welcome return from injury with an hour-long run-out.

The France international understandably was a little short of his best after only just returning to pre-season training but did produce a glorious chance that Moise Kean spurned from six yards.

Everton first-half XI: Begovic, Coleman, Holgate, Godfrey, Digne, Doucoure, Allan, Iwobi, James, Townsend, Kean.

Everton second-half XI: Begovic, Kenny, Holgate (Keane 61), Godfrey (Gibson 73), Digne (Anderson 61), Allan (Gbamin 61), Gomes, Iwobi (Davies 73), Gray, Gordon, Broadhead.

LAS PALMAS 3-2 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

  • Goals: Ki-Jana Hoever (£4.0m), Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Hugo Bueno, Yerson Mosquera (£4.5m)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Bruno Lage’s attacking 4-4-2 set-up was again on show as Wolves contested their second pre-season friendly in the space of 48 hours.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) was rested as Patrick Cutrone and Fabio Silva (£6.0m) were deployed up top, with Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.5m) used ‘out of position’ on the left wing once more – although there was some fluidity to Lage’s set-up.

It remains to be seen if Ait-Nouri’s FPL appeal is as short-lived as that of Ruben Vinagre 12 months ago, with Adama Traore‘s (£6.0m) return to training and playing likely to be the biggest threat to the youngster’s run-outs further forward.

With Marcal (£4.5m) starting all three pre-season games at left-back, there are no guarantees that Ait-Nouri even nails down a start in the medium term.

But Nelson Semedo (£5.0m) on the opposite wing looks to be prospering in the new set-up, particularly with Francisco Trincao (£6.0m) fond of cutting inside and opening up the right flank to Semedo’s forward runs.

Both Wolves goals were well taken by substitutes Ki-Jana Hoever (£4.0m) and Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.5m), with the latter’s strike set up by a raking long pass from centre-half Yerson Mosquera (£4.5m).

Mosquera impressed at the rear and he was part of a back three in the second half, with Lage switching up his tactics.

The high defensive line is something that needs work on based on the evidence of pre-season and will be of great interest to owners of Leicester City attackers ahead of Gameweek 1.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI: Sa (Ruddy 46), Semedo (Hoever 46), Mosquera, Saiss (Marques 46), Marcal (Kilman 46), Trincao (Cundle 46), Moutinho (Dendoncker 46), Neves (Gibbs-White 46), Ait-Nouri (Bueno 46), Cutrone (Dadashov 68), Silva (Campbell 68).

    A) Bruno, Shaw, White (rotating with Ayling) 4-4-2
    B) Son, Iheanacho, Tierney (rotating with Ayling) 3-4-3

    B means no United players.

Looks great. Going without Bruno really strengthens the rest of the squad but it is a risk as he will be a popular captain.

Same team with Wilson Greenwood instead of Sancho Raphinha with 1m in the bank to upgrade Mahrez to Son or Sancho later if needed.

    Brownhill Ayling Gilmour

    1M in the bank

The 2 punts are Mahrez and Greenwood. High potential high risk picks. Can switch them up with a transfer if something goes wrong. Can move down to the 6.5's as well as upgrade to the 10's or 9.5's. Quite like the price points. Apart from that fairly template.

    Thoughts??

I'm going with one anyway as I will no doubt wildcard sometime in the first 10 GWs so Im unlikely to ever need my third sub in that timeframe. Currenltly on Norwichs Omobamidele.....who I hear you ask....indeed. Rather plan my 3 playing defendersk, have one £4.5m as a defender sub and save the £0.5m on that Norwich chappy.

        Exactly this.

Hanley and Zimmerman first choice CBs but both have injury history and are going to break down at some point in the season.

Plus Omobamidele is playing really well and it wouldn't surprise me if at some point Farke plays him ahead of Zim.

The only caveat is that Norwich have nasty early fixtures and so some owners may ship him out after a the first 2 GWs and he drops to £3.9m.

Its the same worry I have with Gilmour at £4.5m, that he'll be £4.4m by GW3 and that will be a big problem if you have to ship him out.

It’s the high ownership on Bissouma that’s worries me. Brownhills isn’t too bad and less likely to drop if he’s benched.

Definitely Robbo over Konate. 5.5 for a CB not for me. Would rather Digne or Shaw or even stretch to Cancelo. Gomez could take some games from him.

I don't think you want to be rotating that pair. Raph in particular can haul any time against anyone. I'd downgrade either Wilson or ESR to someone you're happier to leave on the bench and upgrade Fofana to a nailed-on defender (and the 4.0 to an active player)

The more I look at my team, the more I wonder if it is indeed worth spending £5.5 on the 1st bench spot (ESR).

What do you reckon? Reduce down to £4.5 and reinvest in extra million?

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA - Shaw - White (Ayling - 4.0)
Salah - Bruno - Buendia - Raphina (ESR*)
    Watkins - Nacho - Antonio

    What's better:

Difficult to say without context. Is one of those always going to be a bench warmer?

Think I prefer A if that is the case.

        The team looks like this:
        Sanchez (Steele)
        TAA-Robbo-Coufal-Tierney (Manquillo)
        Salah-Bruno-Raph-Buendia (Harrison)
        Watkins-Antonio (Obafemi)

I'm wondering whether it's better to go with Robbo and Harrison and switch between 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 or should I get Bamford and firpo and switch between 3-4-3 and occasionaly 4-3-3.

Keen for a few people's thoughts on Sancho + Mahrez OR Bruno + Buendia...

My thinking is that Buendia is a transfer waiting to happen, as I own Watkins as well. In addition, I wouldn't be captaining Bruno much/if at all in the first 6 gameweeks, making me ponder if he is worth the 12M.

    What are your guys thoughts?

Tricky to say. FWIW I have Sancho, Mahrez and Buendia.
Mahrez is subject to the dreaded Peptation, so he needs good bench cover. Bruno/Benny are both totally nailed. As you say, Benny's great for the first 3, then you're not sure - but Mahrez could be dropped by then too.

Andy, as I know you're a United fan, is Greenwood over Sancho a possible alternative at 7.5M? -> With the extra 2M able to be spent in other areas?

Will he be in the starting 11 at the start of the season? Also is Sancho nailed on for the first game?

I'm not a United fan! Why d'you think that? I'm a proud supporter of Inverness Caledonian Thistle. From here in Cambodia.

Anyway, I wouldn't have enough confidence in Greenwood's minutes (unless Ole says he starts and is nailed). I'd be choosing from Bruno, Sancho and Cavani offence-wise.

Mahrez might be good for the first couple, but soon after he would get rotated as usual. Sancho is a wait and see for me after I got bitten by Havertz last season having him from the off.

Prefer the Bruno + Buendia, however, I am biased as this is what I have gone for.

      I think you're trying to talk yourself into S + M 🙂

I would suggest the former are riskier and represent more chance of a transfer to happen. Mahrez for rotation and Sancho may not start to begin with given his Euro campaign. Villa have got solid fixtures, Buendia is a great shout. I'm unsure between Watkins and Wilson, but currently have both...

It all depends on if you would captain Bruno. I think I probably will in GWs 3 and 4.

Is Smith Rowe worth a punt? Currently considering a rotation between him and Veltman.

    Fab
    TTA, Robbo, Digne,
    SR, Salah, Bruno, Raph
    Watkins, Antonio, Toney

    Veltman, Brownhill, Fodder

Right now definitely as there is no one else really in contention but Maddison is possible but unlikely transfer.

ESR is more than a punt and is very decent value (the only Arsenal player I'd consider from the off). It's only GW2-3 that you'd want to drop him and Brighton cover that fine.

Anyone else think that White is a steal at 4.5m into the Arsenal defence?

Their CBs last year averaged around 3.8 pts per game last year which beats nearly all Defs priced at 5.0 or lower.

Good opening fixture then at 4.5m easy bench decision for the next two then it gets fairly nice.

Yeah, Arsenal were better defensively than they get credit for and he does improve them. Apart from GW2-3 he gets a good run of fixtures for sure.

Pretty settled on this for now:

    Sanchez - 4.0
    TAA - Digne - Fofana - White - Hoever
    Salah - Bruno - Raphinha - Sarr - Gilmore
    DCL - Cavani - Iheanacho

    any weak spots?

Seems solid. I would personally want Watkins in there and would go for a different £4.5 over Fofana. Maybe Ayling?

I was actually praising his backside.

He did individually impress a lot of the watching folk (https://twitter.com/TimSpiers/status/1419713564881870855) but as I mentioned above, the concern is more about the collective (eg attacking formation, high line).

Mosquera looks a good player, at some point in the season I reckon he'll be a regular starter when they play 2 and certainly when they play 3.

He has to lose 20% of his ownership just to drop once. Then another 20% to drop again.

Last year it took ages for TAA to drop significantly despite the obvious absence of VVD and 7 goals conceded against Villa.

    Current defence structure: 7.5 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0
    Current attack structure: 7.5 - 7.5 - 7.5

I have a £1.0 to invest in either defence or attack. What do you think is best? Gut feeling is to upgrade one of the £7.5 attackers to Cavani

Think I know the answer but just want to see everyone's opinion.

    Which is the better option?
    A. Barnes + Raphinha + Chilwell + Shaw (All start)
    B. Son + Harrison + White + Ayling (Start 2 4.5s out of 3 each gw)

      B

Not keen on A which has 4 realistic point scorers each week?
B is highly dependent on Son and the 4.5s can't really be relied upon.

This is tough. Feel like B scores more, simply because of Son. Don't like Barnes in A.

      1. King Kohli
        • 11 Years

A is very flexible though as you can get a 7.5 for Barnes and downgrade Chilwell to a 5.5.
I'm really keen to start with Son but feel that it hurts my team balance too much.

How does this look for a little plan...
GW 1 + 2 = Mahrez + Jota (Firmino away and Mahrez only city attacker not at Euros)
GW 3 = transfer both out for Son + Raphinha

Obviously a £0.1m price change would ruin everything.

Oh really?! whoops, I've planned the whole season lool...completley understand I'll have to adjust throughout...part of being a manager no? ... as it stands, my team as a whole, face 15 red fixtures (from my opinion - basically any game involving 1/2 of the top 5 teams) The best player in the leauge will come across about 8 'red' fixtures alone.

On paper my strategy looks incredible.
