Four-time top 50 finisher’s team reveal and guide to picking a Sky Fantasy XI

Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

Same goes for Pepe, Laca and Auba, but I wouldn't look at them in FPL to start the season, personally, unless you want a GW1 captain and you're confident of a start (Pepe most likely).

Fairly set on most of my squad, but currently between these two:

    A) Son, Ayling (first sub/to rotate with Veltman as third defender) and Brownhill (second sub) - 3-5-2

    B) Antonio, Robertson and Obafemi (second sub) with Veltman as first sub - 3-4-3

Have TAA, Salah and Bruno in both drafts.

Son gives me a third ‘premium’, but less squad depth… thoughts?

Instead of waiting for your team to be catastrophic enough for a wildcard, what are your thoughts on setting yourself a week to wildcard e.g. GW7?

Then you can dead end your team with short term players before wildcarding out of the mess that you created.

Literally the least flexible strategy possible. Has merit of course but not a "fun" way to play imo as you can't adapt to unforseen events.

      It's fine

Back 7 are template, other than Dier which is interesting at the margin

Front 8 are modestly template. No Bruno is a call, but not crazy if it gives you Son and Sancho. The other call is to go without Toney or Antonio in front 3, and give yourself Foden.

If there's one thing I don't like, is that the bench is weakish, and at the start of the season I only ever want 1 or max 2 'fodder' as you don't ever really know who is going to start at the margin

Believe other pick like Salah will deliver too. If someone from City score big, believe that he will blank after that because so many rotation .

And even without rotation, they might blank against some easy opposition.

Trust in Salah or whoever we pick.

I’d go Meslier for the saves, but still prefer a 4.5 and using the .5 to upgrade elsewhere. You definitely don’t want to be planning to change your ‘keeper a few weeks in (unless you end up wildcarding).

Well B) are two definite starters and the go to midfielders in the squad creative wise.

      A) is a Man City player who looked knackered and worn out after the Euros playing in squad that could field two teams. While also having Jota who might play 2 out of 3 games if you're lucky. Likely more 30 minute cameos for Jota.

Rate my dead team. No transfers unless long-term absences are expected for premium players or I start struggling to field an XI.

    Sanchez
    Shaw Digne Tierney
    Grealish Mahrez Foden Torres ESR
    Cavani Iheanacho

    Steele | Kane, Coufal, Ayling

Planning to win the thing in GW38, tied on points with second place, but with fewer transfers made.

Is Watkins worth the 1m over buendia. I was on buendia but Watkins looks on fire in preseason and will be the main man up top

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Different positions, so you're trading more than just 1m. It's important to consider the player combinations imo.

That said, I would say that Watkins is likely to prove better value than Buendia over the season, using whichever metric you might choose, which I think answers your question 🙂

      1. danlynch13
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Yeh the decision is more like this

        A) Havertz, Watkins ,Shaw
        B) Son, Buendia, Tierney

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

For me the decision is easily B, but a huge part of that is Havertz' fixtures. Simply not worth considering imo.

Although, again, you've got different positions there, so I'm going to assume you have a 4.5m MID in A vs a 4.5 FOR in B, makes B a less obvious option, and requires an understand of your whole team (including the bench).

          Tentatively, B

I’m very tempted, to your point any repeat of last season’s form and he’ll still be gold even at 5.5.
However, for me it depends on them keeping Grealish as they weren’t the same side without him. If they sell I’ll stick with Sanchez.

    Bachmann (McCarthy)
    (T)AA Robbo AWB Tierney
    Jota Greenwood Pepe

Not feeling the keepers. Gotta bench the City players as they aren't guaranteed to start 😆

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 8 Years

        - DGWs often end in DGWers becoming SGWers due to rotation
        - effectively don't lose a FT
        - don't have to plan around a DGW
        - don't have to carry extra funds on the bench for more than a couple of weeks (WCing early)
        - can load up on underpriced assets that are only playing because of injuries/internationals
        - more fun 😀

But the point that DGWs could become SGWs is that they still play at least once so you’re getting points for your BB.
You have several SGWs that could become 0GWs and render your BB completely wasted 🙂

            • 8 Years

that is true, didn't realise that was why people play BB in DGWs though - these are guesses for sure, but if the English/Brazilian/Oly players aren't available then Mahrez, Torres, Pepe, Cancelo, Jota, Barnes are more likely to play than they usually would be - after that it's just luck

I don’t think the goalkeepers are bad at all. Shame Martinez and Pope are way more expensive. Feel like a Liverpool battering with Salah and Mane in one the fun and you’ll regret this. Bold though, fair play.

    Sanchez/Bachmann (Foster)

    TAA • White • Lowton • (Veltman • Ayling)

    4.5 dead striker spot

Cheers! Yes, the dead striker spot is not great, which is why I've loaded up on 4.5 defenders to cover

The midfield range is very exciting, the forwards less so. Benteke/Pukki/Welbeck+ one or two will emerge like Bamford but he along with Watkins/Nacho/Antonio/Wilson have had the price bumps with no replacements between 5.5-6.5

The rotation captaincy thing was one I did not consider long term like your 10 gws it was moreso just the first month.
Sancho at 9.5 initially tempted me but for that .5 extra Son offers so much more. Bruno at 12 seems just too much. I will wait until Man United settle at least that is my plan.

I'm aiming to actually stick with my long term plan this time around. Last season I planned out every week until Christmas pre season, captains, starting 11 and transfers. I'd have been top 10k. What actually happened was a week 3 wildcard and a just under the 2m rank.

Lack of patience, thinking the top scorers in the first 3 weeks would continue to score the highest despite my 100+ hours of in depth fixture and prior season analysis, wanting to increase my team value. Its tough to know when you have good long term picks and when you need to jump on the popular options.

Yeah it’s tricky I sometimes get it wrong the other way and lose ground by being sticky and not jumping on the bandwagon. If you are data driven like it sounds you are I’d say listen to the data and back yourself but be adaptable if the data changes. I think the overlooked it when bamford data changed last year for instance.

As for planning transfers I suggest making way more notes of different players and combinations/teams based on price and fixtures. So if the unexpected does happen you will not be unprepared.

I like the Reguillion pick, have him myself a lot are overlooking him. Has decent enough fixtures.
I am not sure on the Greenwood pick at all I think you would do better in the 6.5m bracket.

Wouldn’t say there is much to rate here given you’ve gone very very template so clearly very solid but not much new to discuss. Only danger is 5.5m gap between midfield price points so could be tricky to get to 8-9.5m player who looks must have if one emerges
